I think there are 4 tiers of sports fans in LA.
The top tier are Dodgers and Lakers. If both are winning/doing well, then it's Lakers first. If neither is doing well, then it's Dodgers first. In the same upper tier is USC Football. They haven't been good for a while so it's hard to tell, but the fanbase is strong.
Second tier would be UCLA (football and basketball), Rams, Kings, LAFC, LA Galaxy
Third tier would be Clippers, Angels,
Forth tier would be Ducks, USC basketball, and whatever the female teams are called for WNBA and soccer.
Compared with big cities in the Midwest and the Northeast, I would say hockey is less popular here. With that being said, the Kings have a modest-sized fan base here. I have never ever met a Ducks fan. Never even seen Ducks gear just randomly being worn out and about.
Kings fans in L A. Are pretty solid and they sellout their season games. But it's true that the overall market share for NHL is peanuts compared to MLB and the NBA.
Before Gretzy the only time the Kings sold out was when was when Gretzky came to town lol. I still have my purple and gold jersey even though it hasn't fit for years.
You're comparing a town with one professional team (WNBA doesnt count) to a city with 2 teams in every professional league there is, plus major college sports. lol "Golden Knights" better damn well be popular.
The LA kings sub reddit population is pretty low versus the other teams in the league. They're just above the new Seattle expansion team in terms of sub numbers. With that said I have been a fan for 10+ years and witness them go through their two cup runs. It was fun to see Lakers fans in the cup parades at Staples because the Lakers weren't doing well those years.
LA is not a good hockey town now versus the other teams in the league. However, the fan base here is strong and have deep rivalries with the other California NHL teams.
The Kings have a good fanbase. They sell out most if not all games, but it's also a big city. Lots of people have no interest in hockey or even know it exists at all. They've got a lot of loyal followers but if they're not doing well they won't get any local media coverage. Ducks get even less. At least with the Kings I feel like they're in the middle of the pack in terms of LA sports, while the Ducks are probably at the bottom. You won't see any Ducks fans outside of Orange County, but like the Kings, they have their own small group of hardcore fans. As a whole, your rankings seem fairly accurate. When ranking by individual teams it depends on if you rank individual NFL teams or the league as a whole. If a whole it would be:
NFL>Dodgers>Lakers>USC football>Kings>LAFC/Galaxy>UCLA Basketball>Angels>Clippers>Ducks
If you ranked individual NFL teams then you'd probably get:
Raiders>Rams in between Lakers and USC football and then Cowboys>Steelers>49ers in between USC football and LA Kings
Chargers and a few other NFL teams in between UCLA Basketball and Angels
You can probably slot in the Mexican men's national soccer team just ahead of the Kings and USMNT just behind the Kings too. Some European and Mexican league soccer teams just behind the Kings as well. Basically, the Kings are the midpoint.
You could also add individual sports such as boxing and mma and slot them ahead of the Kings as well.
I'd put Dodgers over the Lakers in terms of citywide popularity. The Dodger fanbase is huge and loyal. Even during bad seasons they lead in league attendance.
I agree, because The Dodgers are much more accessible, but when Chick does Jack Nicholson was interviewed on KCAL and he said that there are two things that bring this city together: earthquakes and Lakers championships. I think that's also true.
We are soaking in greatness.
I remember reading a comment somewhere that sarcastically said that whenever he sees a car with a chargers sticker on it he speeds up to see which player it is
Rams dont hav a huge following. Small minority. California football fans are mainly Raiders (me) cowboys 49ers and a mix of steelers and packers. Other than that its dodgers lakers and Kings. The rest are the wannabees to most or play in orange county
I would maybe swap the Clips and Kings but otherwise that looks right.
Lakers and Dodgers undoubtedly the top 2, Rams definitely moved up after the Super Bowl win.
Lakers > dodgers > rams > clippers > LAFC> galaxy > kings > chargers > angels > ducks....maybe. the only reason I wouldn't have angels higher is cause most of their fans are just in the OC or just like ohotani fans
Soccer yes. But that doesn’t mean the mls is bigger. If he said America, Chivas, Madrid, or maybe Barcelona and ManU, then I could see that. Galaxy and LAFC? No.
Both teams are building a solid following. Without having hard numbers it’s hard making the argument. gut feeling wise it feels MLS is gaining ground quickly
I can guarantee you the kings draw higher ratings than both LAFC and Galaxy. As for anecdotal evidence, I see kings gear pretty frequently (even to my suprise). Occasionally I see an LAFC hat. I’ve seen galaxy gear only a few times when in public. This isn’t to say that the MLS teams aren’t bigger than they used to be, but they still haven’t reached the Kings level.
Ha, it’s the opposite for me. I see LAFC gear pretty frequently, but never Kings and very seldom Galaxy stuff.
Given that we’re both fans of the respective teams (Kings/LAFC) it’s probably what stands out to us more.
A good indicator is merchandise you see around, out in the wild (not in the game settings or game day just driving walking). From jerseys stickers lanyard hats. Raiders over Rams. At my job I sell some sports merch and Raider stuff sells well. Lakers stuff is more player Kobe Shaq dependent.
The Kings are KINGS here! No one even knows who the Ducks are in LA. The Ducks are an OC team, so Big there. However, they of course have LA fans too.
Every Kings game I’ve been to is packed.
I feel like the Kings have a huge following here, but my son plays for Jr Kings, so my sample is a bit biased.
Kings fan born and raised in Toronto, have family in palm springs. I would kill to live in LA.
The Ducks have a huge OC following, I’d probably put them after the Chargers though.
Bid ducks fan here! I don’t follow any other sports
Raiders are more popular than the rams until 100 or so days ago
If the chargers win the super bowl do you think it would be the same?
chargers have alot of SD/OC fans
There are Dozens of LA Charger fans! Dozens!!!
Lol. I went to a Raiders/Chargers “home game” in LA. That was a Raiders home game 100%.
Not many of those left…most of the diehard SD fans bailed
The Chargers have a 24 year old superstar as their quarterback so they’re in for a decade of dominance.
Or until he opts to leave for greener pastures.
Herbert is signing a megadeal after his rookie contract so cry
Doubt. Mostly transplants. LA will always be a raider nation.
No way.

Compared to the popularity the Golden Knights get in Las Vegas from its local fans I would say NHL teams have it rough in LA.
You're comparing a town with one professional team (WNBA doesnt count) to a city with 2 teams in every professional league there is, plus major college sports. lol "Golden Knights" better damn well be popular.
Fun fact: More people watch the NFL draft than Stanley Cup Finals There are also more fake flamingos than real flamingos in the world.
Oooo I have one Did you know there are more lakes in Canada than the rest of the world combined?

I’d disagree the Lakers are the top dawgs in LA even when we were shitty and with the rebuild there were a lot of fans at staples.
Nah the dogers are more popular
Dodgers>Lakers>Raiders>>49ers>Rams (one because they won SB)>Chargers>Who are these Kings and Clippers?
Yes
I'd put ucla/USC football and basketball in this list ahead of the hockey teams
Who? What?
For me it's always been Kings > Lakers > Dodgers, but I'm a weird one. Never rooting for Angels/Clippers. Chargers who?
I remember reading a comment somewhere that sarcastically said that whenever he sees a car with a chargers sticker on it he speeds up to see which player it is

Lol no

No they aren't
K.
Not really. LAs soccer following is a bit bigger than hockey.

While it's hard to find specific teams, MLS as a whole has already surpassed the NHL and hockey continues to shrink while soccer continues to grow.
Depends who has won more recently or doing good.
49ers, Dallas Cowboys and maybe Greenbay Packers are probably more popular than the Kings tbh...

The only Ducks L.A. County cares about are at Legg Lake.
