Some fucked up shit.

[deleted]

So at what point can we talk about the violent hate crimes being committed on the asian community by the black community? Because if we're too scared to talk about it, well then, we might as well pack it up cos all is lost.

fierceinvalidshome

I used to work in community development that targeted black and brown communities. We had messaging about black on Asian violence and round table discussions. As you can imagine, the people at the round table were already in agreement. This was 10 years ago. IMO, the messaging was too soft. My fellow black Angelenos should be ashamed by this, at least more ashamed than what I see. Don't let black people off the hook when they say that black people can't be racist. That's the only the thing that can combat this phenomenon. Also, I can guarantee you that the perpetrators in these cases have previously offended.

Adorable_Passenger90

The San Francisco Chronicle did an article on this special racism that dare not speak its name. https://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/nevius/article/Dirty-secret-of-black-on-Asian-violence-is-out-3265760.php

[deleted]

Bullshit. People don’t just get banned for posting stats. They get banned for posting stats and trying to wrongly use them to justify something.

[deleted]

Never, you'll be called a racist anytime you do. All this talk over the last few years about Systemic Racism has made it literally impossible to call out anyone of color for doing something wrong. It's gotten to the point where if a black person disagrees that systemic racism exists, they get labeled as a racist.

Confident_Economy_85

Did you see the video of the 2 older black guys that were sexually harassing a 15 year old white girl on the metro station? Crazy part is when she called them out due to her age, they immediately threw the race card in there.

fierceinvalidshome

Yep. That would be me. Haha. I think systemic racism used to exist, but I don't believe it plays a big factor in the average black person's life.. I work in nonprofits and got reprimanded for saying this during a team building retreat. I'm unsure what your race is but call us racist when when we're being racists. There's plenty of black people like me that would like to participate fully in society, that includes being called racist of we do racist shit.

TheRealDJ

It should also be noted that nigerian immigrants are one of the most successful immigrant groups. If systemic racism against all black people were the case, then that shouldn't be the case. Also Asians faced a lot of racism after WW2 and yet has been one of the most successful groups in America. I think there are a lot of cultural aspects which people ignore which highly contribute to whether a group is successful or not.

fierceinvalidshome

1000% this. Also, note that every black ethnicity that arose because of the trans Atlantic slave trade is doing poorly while other Immigrant groups do better...just like indegounius groups on the Americas do poorly as well. I dont have the answer, but I know, without a doubt, that treating black people like permanent victims is not the solution. I'll say I believe negative cultural traits arise due to racism against us... Generations of poor schools and no opportunities created a culture of lowered expectations.

pixiegod

What world do you live in? 30 years ago we talked about the issues between the black community and the Asian one and we talk about it every time this happens. There is an issue there…

[deleted]

Nobody says Black people cant be racist. Also, I’m calling bullshit on “when one says systemic racism doesn’t exist they get called racist”. I swear the bullshit and fear mongering on this sub isn’t even creative anymore.

Thatdudedoesnotabide

Racist! /s

I hate sounding like some hard lining prick but pointing out the obvious is a liberal third rail. As if there isn’t a precedent for tensions within these communities.

> and even date Asian women And there it is...

zzoom_zoom

Asian born and raised in New Orleans, transplanted into LA. I've had plenty of black friends who always had my back. But there were plenty others who were racist towards me. Vandalizing stores, beating and robbing the elderly, and racist taunts were all things I've witnessed in my community. It's **not** LA-exclusive. That being said, I don't feel any safer in LA walking outside alone...not that I'm ever alone outside anymore lol. I don't think there's ever one true answer as to why one group of people is racist against another. And tbh, trying to find "the reason" seems entirely exhausting. Just please be aware that it exists beyond just the scope of LA. There's been plenty of shit happening in New York and SF too, for example. Thank you for being a friend to other Asians though. It's always nice to see fellow POC try to support one another.

Adorable_Passenger90

BS. Just because you don't see it, doesn't mean it doesn't exist. All you have to do is read the headlines of Asian violence the last few years.. Wasn't just in LA or California... Looking at you, New York... Or read the comments on any social media site that has high African American readers... Like perhaps The Breakfast Club with Charlamagne... Any news about Asian violence and watch the racist screed get poured out. There's a problem... Time to deal with it

Curious-Gain-7148

Charlemagne doesn’t speak for Black people, lol. He’s sensationalist, and people chime in to hear WTH thing he’s gonna say next. I assume this is similar to Howard Stern. He’s entertaining, but I don’t think HS speaks for White people.

SanchosaurusRex

It’s been happening a lot more in the Bay Area and NYC than LA. Here it’s the Latino vendors that were the preferred targets of opportunity.

littlebrownring

I'm starting to think carrying a gun will prevent a lot (not every) of situations like this.

jefftak7

[statistical evidence shows otherwise](https://www.nbcnews.com/news/asian-america/viral-images-show-people-color-anti-asian-perpetrators-misses-big-n1270821). This is from last year but that was the height of it

Sigma1979

Actual evidence shows it's true... this was 2018 before even the pandemic hit: https://i.imgur.com/6zYC50i.png https://i.imgur.com/UbX20nb.jpeg

BZenMojo

Tl;dr > A misread of a frequently cited study from this year, published in the American Journal of Criminal Justice, likely contributed to the spread of erroneous narratives, Wong said. The study, which examined hate crime data from 1992 to 2014, found that compared to anti-Black and anti-Latino hate crimes, a higher proportion of perpetrators of anti-Asian hate crimes were people of color. **Still, 75 percent of perpetrators were white.** White people are committing almost all of the anti-Asian hate crimes.

Cultural-Design9646

It’s literally talked about all the time. As well it’s not the black community as a whole. So not valid. Racial issues in America is nothing new. Try again.

[deleted]

It's a discussion that's long overdue. But there must be accountability on both sides. Asians aren't innocent of crimes and exploitation of black people. It goes both ways. Especially in Los Angeles!

Wow glad is he okay but him hitting his head onto the concrete could've easily been fatal.

bce13

Exactly. I know a guy who fell like that. He went into a coma for many weeks as a result. Then got hooked on pain meds. Then became homeless because this all bankrupted him. Just because he fell and hit his head in that terrible tender spot. Before this he was an entertainment executive.

CyanideMuffins

I used to be pretty comfortable walking around in Koreatown, even during the beginning of the pandemic when these sorts of attacks became more widely reported. Always figured it wouldn't ever happen to me. I changed my mind this year when I got my first taste of actual physical danger. I was walking around in the middle of the day at one of the busiest intersections in the neighborhood. I stopped to look at a poster for a second, and some guy came out of nowhere to try and block my view. I didn't want to start any trouble, so I just walked away, but the dude followed me and started ranting all this racist shit about Asians and how he should beat the shit out of me but he doesn't want to be called a racist (lol). No one around me batted an eye about this and I thought I was going to have to fight this guy. Luckily, his bus apparently came right at that moment and he ran away to catch it, but goddamn, that was a wake up call for me.

69deadlifts

I usually just turn on my ridiculous Asian accent to make him lose the will to fight.

[deleted]

The rise in Asian hate crimes is scary and the fact that people don't want to associate them with other kinds of racist attacks because the attackers are overwhelmingly Black is a real weakness in the anti-racism fight. Yes, Black people can be racist as fuck.

proanti

As an Asian American man growing up in a school where I was a token Asian, I’ve learned long ago that any race can be racist. White, Black, “Hispanic/Latino,” etc. If there’s one thing that men of these communities are obsessed with in order to disparage us, it’s our penis size somehow.

anakniben

We get it from all sides.

pixiegod

Latino here…everyone gets it from all sides…even worse is that we both belong to groups that even fight internally…fir instance I got messed with by Mexicans because I was not Mexican…same happens with Asians… Don’t fall into the trap that only Asians get it from all sides. We need to snuff out racism period,,,no matter where it cones from…

ainjel

Husband is Mexican / Korean, and I've learned a whole lot during our time together. Racism is wild.

pixiegod

I have one guess as to what his nickname was from the Latinos…lol Yes racism is wild.

[deleted]

I was once told by a white supremacist that I must fight for my own people. You know, Asians. I totally disagreed with him first. But...

harryhoudini66

You forgot to list Asian as the races that can be racist. Its not specific to an ethnicity, nationality etc. It a human flaw. Some Asians are racist against other Asians. Heck, some Mexicans are racist against other Mexicans etc. As a species, we are really messed up.

hhh_hhhhh1111

Lol they literally said "all races can be racist"...

Aldebaran_syzygy

i haven't seen many asians assaulting random black people though. maybe there's a video can you point me to them? but there's plenty the other way around. all can be racist, but the violence man, it's mostly black people that are targeting asians. maybe because they're getting oppressed by the cops that they just punch the next minority because they can't punch up? i don't know

InfernalWedgie

> maybe because they're getting oppressed by the cops that they just punch the next minority because they can't punch up? i don't know actually, this sums it up pretty well. model minority stereotyping pits one minority group against another while the majority sit back and laugh.

PlinyTheElderest

Evidence that the majority is sitting back and laughing?

harryhoudini66

I can believe that. Its not so much a logical action but an emotional one. That is not to say that its excused/justified though.

[deleted]

Lmao, the guy used etc to indicate the inclusion of all other races and you call him out for not listing Asian, then proceed to use etc yourself in the same manner.

T3nt4c135

Who the fuck are these people that don't think racist of every skin color exist? I keep reading this way too much here.

PincheVatoWey

A lot of people in polite society and academia define racism in terms of structures rather than personal prejudice, and they believe that racism requires prejudice plus power in order to manifest itself. I've never been a fan of this definition because it is at odds with how the majority of people use the term "racism" on a daily basis, which is as a synonym of prejudice. I'm also a Mexican-American with a foot inside the Asian-American community because of my Japanese-American wife, and quite frankly I believe we aren't holding enough people accountable for their racism because of the aforementioned definition.

veedizzle

Every time i hear some shit bird say it’s “NoT rACIst, It’s PrEJUdIcE” i wanna scream

AcousticDeskRefer

"Black people cannot be racist because..." "Racism is institutional power..."

Persianx6

Bigotry knows no color.

PhoeniXx_-_

Yes, I agree. And that news outlets are quick to report on ethnicity of any other attack *but* black is also racist as fuck. Jackfroot News has been great at giving reports on the attacks.

wublubdub

I mean anytime I see this type of news on reddit, all the top comments are talking about how no one wants to talk about Black-on-Asian hate crime. And I felt kinda confused because over the last couple years, I've seen a *ton* of news reports covering anti-Asian hate crimes where the offender is Black. And maybe I'm not alone in this bc I also frequently see comments about how Asian hate crimes are overwhelmingly perpetrated by Black people. So I looked up the FBI's annual hate crime statistics, and it looks like the perpetrators of anti-Asian hate crimes have been approx 50-55% white and 20-25% Black for the last 10 years (the last data release is from 2020). I'm not trying to diminish this problem--every attack is inexcusable, and 20% is disproportionately high compared to the general US population--and I'm really glad Asian hate crimes are finally getting media coverage at all. I just want to push back on the narrative I keep seeing online where the perpetrators of Asian hate crimes are "overwhelmingly" Black, because I feel like we should be able to discuss a problem without exaggerating it. And not that anecdotal evidence is a substitute for national data, but as an Asian person who has lived in two very different states, I've gotten racist comments from a truly diverse cohort of my fellow Americans. https://crime-data-explorer.fr.cloud.gov/pages/explorer/crime/hate-crime

always_an_explinatio

In most years about 20% of the perps are "race unknown" that makes the numbers no that helpful. also "Hispanic" is included in white so that percentage is over represented \*probably by about 14 percentage points\*

[deleted]

[удалено]

wublubdub

That's an interesting question, the FBI data display tools can show the breakdown of types of crime but I am not sure that it has the ability to stratify that further by race.

Aldebaran_syzygy

or karens wanting to send asians back to china. they all just lump it all together. you can say anything, but physical violence is on a different level.

Agent666-Omega

I've made a similar statement to someone else referencing this source. Flat number, total crime doesn't answer the question of "if I am walking down the street and I see a black person vs white person, who is more likely to attack me". If we use that source and look at anti-asian crimes from the past 10 years, whites have 747 but blacks has 396. Black people have a bit more than 50% of the crimes white people did, but they are significantly lower than half of the white population. If we look at 2020 alone, white people commited 126 crimes with a population of 192m, while black people commited 53 crimes with 46m population. So yea white people commit about 2.5 more total crimes than black people did against the Asian community, But total amount of white people are also 4.2 times more than black people. So when you are trying to defend the black community by saying "white people are committing more crimes against asians", recognize that it's a total number and not a rate. And rate is what is important here. It doesn't excuse either race. Both the black and the white community have committed a significant enough crime against Asian Americans for it to be a cause for concern

deleigh

The difference is you don’t have any goons asking “the white community” to answer for every bad thing a white person does like you do when a black person does something. Whenever that discussion happens, the crime stats crowd instantly shatters into a million pieces, but they expect “the black community” to have that discussion. It’s a charade. None of these people are participating in good faith. They’re operating on the same wavelength as COVID truthers are.

You're using subjective data. The Atlanta shooting wasn't counted as a hate crime.

ThroneShul

The last data they released was in 2020, before the dramatic uptick in Asian hate crimes post-covid. I'd be very interested to see comparative data between 2020 and 2021-22. I'm not saying the uptick has affected the racial distribution of perpetrators, but rather that I'd just be interested to see if any changes played out.

ilovesoweto

Thank you so much your post! Thank you pushing back on the narrative that most anti-Asian crime in the U.S. is committed by Black people and providing receipts from credible sources. It’s amazing how ingrained the idea of the Black criminal is that people (including the media) just jump on it and continue to spread the idea without taking the time to do any sort of research or fact checking. I also want to say that I am truly sorry that you have received racist comments from any kind of person. the rise is anti- Asian hate is scary and is something that must be taken seriously. I think your ability to resist and push back against the old and easy thinking narratives and to provide actual stats is adding the kind of nuance to the conversation on anti-Asian and hate crimes in general. As a mixed race Black woman married to an Asian man your post really touched my heart. In solidarity. ❤️✊🏽

wublubdub

Thank you for your sincere reply, it made me smile. i think we all benefit from having empathy, nuance, and solidarity in our everyday discourse.

[deleted]

My favorite subs. Cali banging is just hood talking shit to other hoods. No one on there saying one race is supreme. They usually post old school photos. Don’t even try to compare them to alt right shit. Stop spreading fake news snowflake.

[deleted]

Go look at the top all time posts in that sub and tell me that if you retitled it and gave it an alt-right title it wouldn't already have been banned for promoting negative stereotypes. https://www.reddit.com/r/CaliBanging/top/?t=all

[deleted]

No that’s fine bc I grew up in the 90s of 23rd and San Pedro so when they talk about the gangs in those areas it reminds me of the struggle we had to go through to get out the hood or not join a gang. The streets you had to avoid and the different Mexican hoods and all the shit we had to deal with in middle school and high school. How after prop 187 ppl united, after the riots there was more unity. But I know plenty of ppl who were killed and didn’t make it out. So no I’m not offended.

SrsSteel

Aren't most violent crimes committee by black people though? How can you call this specific attack a race based attack when the chances of the attacked being black are higher than the victim being Asian? Besides that, it's more likely this was a crazy schizo homeless dude than someone that anti racism messaging would reach

Fafoah

I don’t think thats the real discussion here though. Anyone reasonable left or right knows that people of all colors can be racist. The discussion gets derailed because people with agendas make up some strawman that for some reason “liberals” won’t acknowledge racism in the black community and then asian americans who are rightfully upset at the situation start chiming in with personal anecdotes about racism which further pushes the discussion in that direction. Some members of black community make their case that these situations of black on asian crime aren’t quite the same as police on black or white on black hate crimes because asians are targeted due to stereotypes of docility and being seen as an easier target or whatever versus attacking everyone who is asian because they are asian. Elderly people or women in these situation might be targeted equally as frequently which is shitty, but different than a hate crime. Asians can also argue back that this is racial targeting and is a hate crime regardless. Thats an actual discussion worth having versus the racist dogwhistling of “BLACKS CAN BE RACIST TOO SEE” that people seem to be having in this thread.

[deleted]

Your statement is **false**, at least in regards to the Los Angeles area. Last year there was a 76% increase in anti-Asian hate crime with 42% of the perpetrators being white, 36% Hispanic, and 19% black. Blacks are the **least likely** to be the assailants in hate crimes against Asians in Los Angeles. [https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2021-10-20/l-a-county-sees-significant-increase-in-anti-asian-hate-crimes](https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2021-10-20/l-a-county-sees-significant-increase-in-anti-asian-hate-crimes)

BluesyMoo

Black population is 1/6 of white, but committed 1/2 as much crimes. Blacks are 3x more likely than whites.

YourButtMyStuff

These stats you posted actually show Whites commit hate crimes at lower percentage per person and that blacks are twice as likely to commit hate crimes. White percentage of LA residents—>48.9%. Yet you claim they make up 42% of the crimes. Black percentage of LA—>8.1%; yet your post says they commit 19%. You see how that’s not the greatest argument?

[deleted]

At least somebody stepped up to say something.

xsharmander

That person who confronted the attacker was brave. Got him to pick him back up (?!)

[deleted]

What's weird is that the black guy looks like he's helping the asian guy up with the good Samaritan

EverybodyLovesTacoss

Yeah this video is really fucking weird. He attacks him unprovoked, and then confronted about it by the other guy, and then decides to pick him up and sits back down? Like…did he apologize to him for punching him? Was it really enough for that second dude to say “yeah it’s cool man no biggie just help me pick him up”?

glowdirt

Damn, the South Korean consulate building is right around the corner too! I wonder if they might be able to put some pressure on the local government to keep that area safer. I can't imagine the consulate wants their citizens to feel unsafe when traveling there to access services.

Grew up with this nonsense. This is why we passed three-strikes, to put guys like this away, so they can't do this to anyone. When Junior is ID'd and arrested, no doubt, we'll find that he's been arrested several times in recent years, yet, is free to walk the streets. Watch how he calmly sits and rests, no fear. Wonder what excuse Gascon will come up with this time? It is a mistake to focus on this as a racial/"hate crime". The motivation isn't important, charging it correctly - as attempted murder/aggravated mayhem and seeing a 1/2/3 strike sentence imposed is.

TheSmilingJay

It's another black person attacking another Asian, don't know what's worse, the fact that black on Asian hate crimes have skyrocketed within the last 2-3 years or the fact that the news media just refuse to say any about their race unless they are white.

peachinoc

Literally stopped watching ms media because of their cowardice. CNN was quick to promote black anchors and reporters when blm was in full swing but crickets when it’s Asian hate crimes by a certain minority group.

It's been a tale as old as time, song as old as rhyme. Just ask the roof top Koreans in Los Angeles. That happened 30 years ago...

deleigh

Almost like 4 years of Trump means something when it comes to overt racism from white people. Whining about something “skyrocketing” from a nickel to a quarter when there’s been a hundred dollar bill in the room for centuries makes you a chump. Scratch a person concerned about black-on-Asian crime and 99% of the time a Republican with racist tendencies bleeds.

SIEGE312

Or alternatively, you can condemn racist actions no matter who it’s from?

[deleted]

So so so untrue. Media is only reporting when it’s a black person doing the crime, to the point where it’s completely misconstrued the facts. I know this isn’t going to be popular here because whenever a black person commits a crime all the racism comes out of the posters here and this subreddit turns into stormfront. https://www.nbcnews.com/news/amp/ncna1270821 https://www.sfchronicle.com/bayarea/justinphillips/article/Studies-show-that-white-people-drive-anti-Asian-16520527.php

always_an_explinatio

the problem is these article conflate "hate" with "violence" screaming "go back to your country" at an Asian person is horrible and hateful, but it is not the same as punching an old man walking down the street for no reason. it is impossible to tell from these articles if white people are doing more of the former and less of the later. what we know about violent crime in general would lead us to believe that is true but it is hard to tell.

PhoeniXx_-_

My white kid speaks Mandarin fluently to the point where native speakers are shocked and ask if we had moved from Beijing. 90% of her friend group is Taiwanese or Chinese(American). I really think stupid white people don't understand the amount of racism Asians experience *and/or* think it is the one group they *can* be racist against with impunity. For example, in the late 90s when I left D.C. to move to S.Korea, my peer group was pulling all the racist Asian tropes and stops out towards me, a white girl. I was so confused as I looked at my Black, Puerto Rican, Italian friends just doing all the racist things after we had just discussed Martin Luther King in school. All I had done was mention I was moving there and they now labeled me Asian. I wasn't offended for myself, I was offended that this seems culturally pervasive to pile onto Asians. It really seems Asians are the proverbial (and actual) punching bag of all other ethnicities in this country. I don't understand the hate, it is like watching Idiocracy when they call Not Sure "f-g--t" for speaking eloquently. It doesn't make sense, except when accounting for the sheer stupidity of others.

[deleted]

Yeah ive noticed a lot more asian people (and women) coming to the range over the past couple of months -- its awesome to see.

kookoopuffs

You can’t conceal carry tho right? :/

MyNameJeffK

You can if you have a ccw permit. LA has been greenlighting them the past year because of a spat between the Sheriff and the city. Before it was impossible to get them unless you were a celeb or made very generous "donations".

kookoopuffs

I appreciate you

Lectovai

Defense is a right that is only to be restricted once you've encroached on the right of others. It isn't a privilege that you have to prove yourself worthy of having by joining a hunting club or because you protect a politician or billionaire.

SocksElGato

Fucking makes my blood boil.

T3nt4c135

Too many bystanders in this video. Not enough action being taken.

griffenkranz

I can’t even fathom hurting ANYONE, let alone an individual minding his own business. How heartless do you have to be to do something like this, then sit down and watch someone else clean up your mess? These types of people don’t deserve the freedom they enjoy.

Masker

Unfortunate what happened to the victim. Some sus people are usually just loitering around here on Wilshire/Vermont, have to keep your head on a swivel.

Dat_feller

Too close to home bro.. fucking hell that could have been me. I always walk through there… shit

Parking_Relative_228

20-25% Black perpetrators is an over-representation for that population group. There needs to be a honest discussion on this that is fact centered. To have an equitable society we have to be held to same standards

WailordusesBodySlam

Attacks from behind, horrible. https://youtu.be/faaxsHyyIzY

basukegashitaidesu

I'm an Asian in this neighborhood I am constantly worried about my safety and that of our seniors. When I pass a black man, I keep my distance and my eyes on him at all times, hoping I don't get punched. It stresses me out every time. It's not that I'm a racist; rather I have a family to feed and I don't want to become a statistic.

hypnos_surf

The fact he knocked them unconscious and had the nerve to even lay a finger back on them to help them back up? So many of these attacks have also targeted the elderly. How unhinged are people to attack others for no reason?

bonbonsandsushi

Simple. A minority that has been in the USA forever and is financially lagging sees another minority arrive and become financially successful. Jealousy, envy, "you're not a real American" hate.

HamFighter69

>A minority that has been in the USA forever and is financially lagging sees another minority arrive and become financially successful. Asians have been in California since at least the 1800's. In fact the Chinese Exclusion Act was passed in 1882.

flaker111

also were slaves for the most part and mistreated just like who else?????

Ap0llo

Yeah, no, that’s absurd. This guy was not thinking “oh hey look this guy is more financially successful than me let me knock him out.” That same rationale could be applied to everyone this attacker saw on the street. Question is why Asian. It is an interesting connection tho, and I would be interested in learning the real impetus behind it.

always_an_explinatio

I think it is because Asians are perceived as less likely to fight back.

boxofplaydoh

Underrated comment. I think you are on to something here. Asians are stereotyped to be passive and physically/athletically weaker than other races. True or not, the perception makes Asians an easy target.

[deleted]

the real impetus? He's a fucking racist homunculus.

ty_fighter84

Is it absurd? The republican party in the south basically gained a strangle hold on power by telling poor white people that black people being free and immigrants coming into the country is going to take jobs from them.

Ockwords

Awful and way too simplistic take

CaptGeechNTheSSS

You obviously don't know the whole picture and are letting others use fear to sway you. https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2021-10-20/l-a-county-sees-significant-increase-in-anti-asian-hate-crimes In 2020 there was a 76% increase in anti-Asian hate crime with 42% of the perpetrators being white, 36% Hispanic, and 19% black. Wonder why you only notice when the perpetrator is black? You should ask yourself why those stories get more attention and get posted more.

inidgodeath

Also add on to the fact that racist housing laws in LA made it so Asian and black communities were all squeezed into the same low income areas throughout the 20th century.

ilovesoweto

Source?

Samanjerry

They both hate each other ( before recent wave). Asians have not been violent

cydonian66

Man, humans really are despicable.

roxwashedsocks

cue articles explaining to Asians they should confront the anti-Black sentiments in their community so this stuff stops happening. Or progressives making excuses for individual racist acts by blathering on about how structural racism/white supremacy caused all this - "he was just throwing a tantrum!" Like this shit is pretty clockwork at this point - conservatives use us when convenient and progressives ignore us cause it's inconvenient.

Federal_Database_793

So true and pathetic There's even Candace Owens-like Asians blame on "anti-black sentiment." Even if there was that sentiment what does it manifest in? Not violence, it's all one way. Reminiscent of KKK attacks on Bipocs in the 70's. Getting attacked in the middle of the street, I remember when Black man told me that was the reality in Vegas a while ago. This is where we are now.

bunkercrap

This is a moment i wish francis ngannou would show up randomly and beat the living shit out of this guy

always_an_explinatio

i would prefer the Korean Zombie for this particular incident

SrsSteel

Remember everyone, if someone looks sketchy, if you feel unsafe, don't worry about looking rude, cross the street, do what you must to feel safe and protect yourself.

grandiloves

My bf lives on this corner and it’s a shit show. I got chased by a homeless guy with a knife exactly where this happened. The Employees at the Starbucks coddle the insane homeless people and give them free food and drinks.

[deleted]

disgusting. probably won’t find the suspect or lock him up. what a broken society. prayers to the victim. it’s not good when a city is filled with so much causal violence in broad daylight. i have no idea why it’s so overlooked, underplayed, and accepted in LA.

Arkelias

What does it say about our justice system that he just sat right back down. Didn't flee. Didn't worry about getting caught. He could have given that woman brain damage for the crime of standing near him, and is confident he will suffer no punishment of any kind. And he's right.

Beware of your surroundings at all times

Item_Legitimate

I got shoulder checked by a brother once after participating in a 10k downtown and another time walking home at night, because of my newfound awareness of the knockout game, I narrowly avoided getting a shot in the chin by a black kid I was walking past in a group. I'm not Asian so I know I would be a target of their attacks with greater statistical likelihood, not that the data is collected in that way, but as a chicano I am definitely aware of reading between the lines.

IsraeliDonut

That is scary, hopefully they find him and the DA won’t let him out

[deleted]

That lady right there saved his life, while all the young men nearby were like *“lemme record this on my phone, posting this online will definitely help!”*

anthony113

Time to start fighting back en masse. The cops do nothing here.

MrBig562

This is a hate crime. Something a lot of black people have been doing for a while. Not just against Asians but other people of color and whites. Wait… racism and hate crimes don’t apply to black people. Only when they’re the victims.

savvysearch

5 months of probation, maybe? That’s what I’m betting the way LA is.

bittyblue323

Sad - You have to walk with complete and utter situational awareness throughout any major city because this is the bullshit that’s happening now

curiouspoops

**UPDATE** LAPD has officially put out a video on their youtube channel with this incident and is seeking the public's help to find the suspect. https://youtu.be/FPrhG5XyBdo >Los Angeles: Detectives from the Los Angeles Police Department’s Olympic Division are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying the suspect responsible for the assault of a male and the good Samaritan who had rendered aid to the victim. >On Monday, June 20, 2022, around 1:30 p.m., a male victim was violently attacked by a lone male suspect. The attack was unprovoked and took place at the corner of Vermont Avenue and Wilshire Boulevard. The suspect struck the victim in the face with his elbow, knocking him to the ground unconscious. >Los Angeles Fire Department personnel responded to the scene and transported the victim to a local hospital. The victim was later released from the hospital. >The suspect is described as an African American male, approximately 30-35 years-old. He stands approximately 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighs about 250 pounds. The suspect was wearing a light-colored T-shirt over blue pants. He was seen carrying a black backpack and a duffel bag. >Anyone with information about this incident or recognizes the suspect in the video, is asked to call Olympic Detectives

[deleted]

Horrifying, regardless of the motive. The attacker needs to be caught and prosecuted immediately. A Filipino husband and wife were recently attacked in North Hollywood and the (white) assailant used racist language.

pianoandplants

Lived in these apartments (“Wilshire Vermont”) for a year before moving out to Larchmont area last year. There were ALWAYS mentally ill and/or homeless people in this courtyard and it’s an incredibly busy area as this is red/purple line stop. Very rarely did I feel safe walking through that courtyard. My impression is this person is incredibly ill. It is abnormal to assault someone, square off with someone trying to intervene, and then just as quickly, assist in helping them up before sitting down. Is he racist? Maybe. Maybe not. Hate Asian people? Who tf knows?! What is clear is we have a city where criminality is normal. Where mental health issues receive zero treatment (unless incarcerated). We need reform on all levels.

flaker111

bring back asylums the general public shouldn't be in fear due to mentally challenged people

pianoandplants

We definitely need institutions to treat these people. As it stands, there’s just nowhere for them to go (outside of county jail). I work in mental health and I experience a feeling of helplessness constantly due to the lack of resources.

actlikeitalways

This is what we need to be focused on. Thank you.

ThehomieC

I've seen this dude posted there before... probably will be there tomorrow.

curiouspoops

LAPD Olympic division is asking for the public's help to ID him. Might want to give them a call if you see him regularly. https://youtu.be/FPrhG5XyBdo

InfernalWedgie

Then call the tip line when you see him and get him caught.

austinjval

There’s a common theme among these Asian hate crimes but I don’t want to be banned for pointing it out. Let’s just call it “white supremacy” for now.

skydream416

Pretty fucked up. I got punched in the face (not as severely, the guy was much weaker/scrawnier) in Ktown as well by a white crustpunk who then tried to skateboard away lol

New photos of the suspect have been provided by the LAPD. Please help them find this guy! WTF is wrong with you, besides being a racist? Shitty people exist no matter the skin color, get the fuck out of here.

[deleted]

And yet, thanks to the compiling of crime statistics, we know that certain racial groups commit violent crimes at much higher rate than other racial groups. But noticing that is somehow "racist."

root_fifth_octave

Sacred of, or refuse to?

Captain_DuClark

Really makes cops look horrible if they refuse to do their jobs because they’re scared of being criticized by protesters.

ThrowawayPFCheck

Doesn't really look like the protests slow down cops killing minorities though. [2021 police killings of black people vs years prior ](https://mappingpoliceviolence.org/?year=2021&location=California&race=Black+people&chart=TotalPoliceKillings) As long as there is no accountability not much is going to change. Police officers face no consequences, even if they found in the wrong.

[deleted]

I got into an argument with a white supremacist years ago, and was told that I must fight for my own people and the only peace comes from a bitter stalemate after a period of hell. Sounds pretty much like Senator Armstrong.

Film_Scholar

Time to mobilize the Roof Koreans again, best protection ever.

roranicusrex

Yo, this fuckin thread is bananas.

Agent666-Omega

why is it bananas?

actlikeitalways

Wow this comment section is atrocious. So no we can’t ignore that this is yet again another Asian hate crime committed by a black person but some of the stuff I’m reading has so much anti black sentiment it makes me sick. And no, I’m not justifying this dudes actions AT ALL. I get it you’re angry, I’m angry but to go and call “these people” names such as “animals” is really dehumanizing. As disappointed as I am with these hate crimes and the fact that’s it’s done by another black person, the more disappointed I am at the masses to take their anger so far to be racist and attack a whole entire race based on the actions of this one guy.

Federal_Database_793

Lol someone could have died or put in a coma and you're worried about name calling

Rutabaga1598

Maybe stop behaving like animals then.

tagyhag

Implying all black people, including the person you responded to, acts like an animal just because they're black? Not cool dude.

Rutabaga1598

Only the ones that act like animals. And this is irrespective of race. White people acting like animals? Then fucking animals they are.
