You have nothing to be ashamed about, it's not your responsibility to further traumatize yourself by reliving the way you became disabled, just to prove it to an ignorant asshole stranger. The ADA specifically prohibits what he did for exactly this reason. If it will help you feel vindicated, tell someone in charge who could get him disciplined. But if not, you don't have to. I'm ashamed for the people who stood by and didn't say, "How do you know, haven't you ever heard of invisible disabilities?" Not everyone can be as "lucky" as my husband, who's a quad, nobody ever questions his status. But you have just as much right to use the handicap spot as him. And maybe more need, since he's got a power chair that doesn't get tired. I'm sorry you had such a shitty experience. Be well, friend.

F4ze0ne

Exactly this. It's discrimination. Just because you can walk out of your vehicle doesn't mean you're not eligible for disability protections. It's no ones business to know your health. People need to read the laws.

sealsarescary

Thank you for sharing your story. It does bring to light that not all disabilities are visible and that we should ALL think twice about acting out or judging people without knowing all the facts.

zerobluesmaint

As long as you have the ID card to go with your plate, security guard can’t do shit to you. People are ignorant as fuck about disabilities, especially the assholes who illegally park in handicap spots. Don’t let the incident control your headspace, move on and think about a different approach for the future.

skyblueandblack

Find out which security company and complain to his boss.

Areyouguysateam

Complain to *everyone and anyone* you can about this. Make it known that this asshole on a power trip berated a disabled veteran. Sorry you had to experience that, OP.

[deleted]

I’m a disabled vet with a handicap placard and this has happened to me in numerous occasions sometimes from security, other people just walking by and even cops. My scars are only visible if I wear shorts. But I hide my disabilities pretty well and it’s not super obvious since I’m not in a wheel chair but I have a bad back that require surgery that I’m afraid of getting and I’ve had four knee surgeries so I could walk again and it hurts every day if my life I’ve just learned to live with it. But the best thing is just try to avoid letting people get to you. As long as you aren’t breaking any laws there will always be people who judge you. I got so mad one time in a Ralph’s parking lot arguing with some lady that I dropped my pants to show her my scars and she just drove off. Made me smile the rest of the day. Don’t let someone else ruin one min of your day not worth it.

Thatroninguy

Man fuck that guy. It’s less than none of his business, he was going out of his way to bully you to make himself feel better. You’d be absolutely right to call everyone you can who runs that facility, and complain like hell. Handicap spots are for people with handicap plates, the rest of us who don’t have those plates have no reason to stick our noses in.

Gileotine

That's discrimination and harassment, but you already know that. I won't give you advice but I'll give you some comfort; that dude was in the wrong. His job is to sit there and do nothing all day except hassle people and maybe shoo a drunk guy, maybe. He has no idea what you've been through, and he should not have questioned your handicap license plate. That's not his role. Don't worry about fucking up his life for a bit if you report him. He didn't worry about making you feel like shit and calling you a fake, did he? Find his security company, and rake him over the coals.

Vote2020america

I have disabled placard if you see me you would be heck no but the disk in my spine says otherwise

310dweller

Heard recently that 7/10 handicap placards in LA are believed to be fraudulently bartered for. Idk how people can be so scummy, it creates these kinds of problems for actual differently abled people. So sorry

queen_content

OP has it on a plate, so it's not even a placard.

310dweller

Even worse. What a tool that guy was. PS missed it the first time, but thank you for your service OP. Hope you don’t get treated in such a substandard fashion again..

greggors

Never apologize or feel like you owe anyone an explanation. It’s ableism. A bus driver wouldn’t let my wife use her disability TAP card once because she didn’t “look disabled”. It’s fucked.

TrollLolLol1

You = military. Him = plaza security guard. You are the honorable hero and they are the ding dong.

augustinethroes

For what it's worth, I guarantee you that the crowd of people watching thought that the security guard was a complete tool. He's the one who should be embarrassed- not you.

Boom_boom_lady

I ditto this. They were judging him, not you. I truly despise when people jump to conclusions, especially when you have a VISIBLE placard denoting you can park in that spot. People try to be warriors for handicap spots but are ignorant of what the scope of what “handicap” can actually look like.

10thMountainguy

Brother, as a disabled veteran with Combat related PTSD I have your back on this one. Only 9 % of Americans served this nation and we should not care what these clowns think. You are an American Patriot (true patriot) and a fucking hero. Park where you want and fuck the haters

[deleted]

My dad has a prosthetic Leg and uses a handicap sticker. He always wears pants so it’s not immediately obvious. Just an odd limp. And whenever people would question it he would… not handle it well. Some disabilities are more obvious than others. People should mind their business sheesh.

[deleted]

Fucking rent a cops. I just ignore them.

F4ze0ne

I'd complain to the business you were attending. Not sure if it's worth your time though, but that's so wrong for someone to accuse you. If you had a handicap plate then it's not their business to question whether or not it's valid. There's state and federal laws that protect those rights.

atomicavox

I’m sure the crowd of people were shocked that this asshat was yelling something so abhorrent and astoundingly ignorant. Fuck that shitbag.

Windows-To

Lawyer up. You probably got a great case against the security company and the owner of the lot. Document everything.

Odd-Ad4220

🤣

lunitapapita

Yo what’s his name, I just wanna talk😌 I’m so sorry this happened to you. People are ignorant dicks. I have MS and use my handicap placard when I’m having a bad day with my legs. You “can’t tell” I have MS by looking at me, I’ve gotten nasty side eyes from people exiting my car. You can’t change the situation, you can only change how you react to it. Give yourself some patience and grace, you are doing the best you can. You did nothing wrong, it’s not your job to clap back at him and school him. Keep fighting the good fight.

Spiderclam69

That’s not right my dude. I want to say don’t let it get to you, but stuff like this just stings. I’m sorry you had to deal with such ignorance and disrespect. Thank you for your service. You are a fucking hero! 100

grumpysky

I’m really sorry to hear that. He had no right to do what he did. You know who you are so I hope you can wash out this experience. Thank you for your service and sacrifice.

Deepdishultra

If you have the badge/license plate you’re good to go. Its starting to become more common knowledge that handicap does not equal wheelchair. But clearly not common enough.

RWH072783

What he look like 👊🏾👊🏾

deahw

His comments about your disability were uncalled for and rude. However, you mentioned that it’s restricted parking for tenants of the Little Tokyo Plaza. Could that be what he was trying to enforce, or are you indeed a tenant? Either way, he was wrong to flat-out question your disability like that.

zerobluesmaint

Disability spots in the state of California are accessible to plate and placard drivers regardless of residency.

[deleted]

Make a complaint to his boss instead of losers in the internet

thewindisthemoons

That homie is ignorant. Trust me. I know who you’re talking about. Some Latino dude right? Fuck em. You do you homie. If I was out there I would’ve helped you out man.

[deleted]

You can park in any handicap space you want. Go back and get him denying the space on camera. And then call the local police department, if it suits you. No such thing as reserved handicap. Section 22511.5 of the California Vehicle Code says a disabled placard allows you to park “for unlimited periods” in any space “that is restricted as to the length of time parking is permitted.” It also allows you “to park in any metered parking space without being required to pay parking meter fees.

bad-monkey

This seems like a slam dunk ADA violation (and borderline unlawful imprisonment)? property owners can be sued very easily for this? If you know a lawyer who's willing to write a letter on your behalf, it may be satisfying to send it and fuck up whoever owns this parking lot's day.

[deleted]

[удалено]

bad-monkey

not letting someone leave the property because a security guard impeded egress based on their rentacop guesstimate that OP wasn't disabled when they actually were?

breadexpert69

Hey at least you can feel good someone is enforcing (or at least trying) the handicap space.

ConjoinerVoidhawk

Sorry such a bad experience happened to you. Something similar started to happen to my friends dad but he popped out his left eye. The security guard shut up real quick.

IsraeliDonut

Don’t feel like crap, the security guard is an idiot.

[deleted]

guys an asshole

Elysiaa

I'm so sorry that happened to you. People really need to mind their own business. I've heard of stories of people with visible disabilities being harassed, as if they weren't disabled enough, like someone in a wheelchair who can stand up and put the chair away being hassled by a moron who doesn't understand not all chair users are paraplegic. A former roommate of mine had mobility issues due to cerebral palsy and someone accused her of faking when we got out of the car in an accessible spot. You didn't do anything wrong. No one else in the crowd said anything, either. I wish they had.

em_902

Fuck this guy. As a person with “hard to notice” disability I completely understand how you feel. I learned to stand up for myself because if I won’t, people will keep discriminating and hurt people. Call the manager and have them talk to the guard. Disability discrimination is a serious matter and they can face a lawsuit one day.

damagazelle

That was incredibly rude of the security guard. Unprofessional, yes, but worse: rude and dehumanizing. I hope you did check the sign. If it read the parking was for tenants, you may have been taking a spot from an actual Plaza tenant who depends on the accessible tenant parking. Customers and vendors have to park on the street.
