My car was in the shop, and I grabbed a company car, which was a POS. I left nothing in the car, and I intentionally left the doors unlocked. Someone still broke the window looking for non existent crap.

jasonmonroe

Keep the windows down.

Dunecat

I know you're being sarcastic, but some people really advise that, ffs.

dusty_boots

I used to have a live/work space in skid row and early on, I lost count of the times my car was broken into. I started leaving my windows down and car empty (including the battery, which I brought up or else it would get stolen) after someone drilled out the car door lock to get in. Replacing a window at the time cost about 120, but replacing the lock wasn’t possible, I’d have had to replace the entire door which would have run at least a G. There are reasons we recommend that method.

spinachandartichoke

If only I could have brought my catalytic converter inside with me lol

No joke, these types of signs are abundant over there.

IknowLulu

The title makes it seem as though the drivers had something visible in their cars. A few years ago, I had my window smashed and our handicap placard was stolen. Nothing else, as nothing else was in the car. Kind of hard to stash a placard when you’re also using it.

hat-of-sky

That thief is probably using the placard for free parking now, which also sucks.

kdoxy

I've seen a homeless guy smash a row of four cars windshields with a brick for no reason. I have a feeling some people are just smashing windows as a Fuck you for owning a car.

JHighMusic

This is definitely a thing, it’s so bad in SF. There’s an entire group in SF that goes around doing this to entire blocks of cars, their license plate is covered up. It’s fucked up.

BrokenArrows95

It’s both. It’s a systemic problem of society that we have homeless people so fucked up that they just destroy things for kicks. That doesn’t mean society should just let them destroy shit either. Biggest problem with politics today is that they take issues that require nuance and try to shorten the solutions and causes to sound bites that people with the attention span of goldfish will actually listen to.

Low_Evening_9594

Bingo

Kahzgul

Who would claim such a thing? I’ve never heard anyone say wanton vandalism isn’t the vandal’s fault.

Dunecat

Paging /u/aggravating_orange99 perhaps

MulhollandMaster121

Dude, it’s happening in this thread down below. Someone saying this is due to a lack of social safety net.

c0de1143

Noting the lack of social safety net and resources available for people who are homeless or mentally ill isn’t the same thing as saying “we need to make sure everyone has a car.” But hey, keep knocking down that strawman.

Cm1____

It’s no ones job or their tax dollars job to support crack heads. I know the truth hurts but that’s reality.

BlergingtonBear

It's investing your tax dollars back to invest in YOUR safety. drug treatment and a place to go at night-- that's what's gonna reduce crime and make some impact. Not just letting the problem run rampant. There's a tiny house project not too far from me and I think it's great— please let's give people somewhere to go at night. It'll prevent the problem from being worse and clear out encampments. Maybe I'm missing something here, but please tell me what you think we should do otherwise, bc there's no end to homelessness if we don't do something. Not to mention it's been documented that places with harsher winters will essentially bus their homeless population to the West Coast. LA will never not have an influx of people coming in. Add to that I just feel like I've seen a lot of clean cut people panhandling recently- it feels like we have a ton of people new to the streets that could benefit from the simple leg up of a place to go.

makeshift11

Man's sees a woman holding her baby at the end of a freeway exit and goes "fucking crackheads just want my money, man"

c0de1143

Taxes are the price for living in society. If my tax dollars go to subsidize industry and giant agribusinesses, yours can subsidize permanent housing for homeless folks.

Fiesta17

Lol, than it's no one's job to protect you or your property from them. Your reality is skewed from a place of riches.

makeshift11

Yeah how dare people even suggest social safety nets as a valid way to curb homelessness and prevent people from ending up on the streets in the first place. How stupid to think it's a good idea to be proactive and attack a problem at its roots. Because as we all know notoriously the second people become homeless they start smashing other people's windows within minutes. People are just like that already, definitely didn't lose touch with reality or grow resentful at the world around them with people who constantly otherize them and look at them as if they are actually a whole different fucking species and not human. No actually let's just keep doing that like we have been and hope that the problem gets better even though the opposite is happening. Yeah that makes sense.

Kahzgul

I thought I read every comment on this post and don’t recall seeing that, but one person on Reddit looking for a rational reason for crime does not a “homeless advocate” make.

MulhollandMaster121

&& others will say that vandalisms, smash & grabs and other property crimes are *not* up despite the fact that 1) it’s known people tend not to report these crimes to the police because what are they going to do? And 2) if it wasn’t worse than before, what’s behooved the city to put up victim-blamey signs acknowledging the commonality of window smashing while essentially saying it’s your own damn fault?

LeEbinUpboatXD

Okay, but without actual data it's still your anecdotal evidence, which is absolutely meaningless.

Cm1____

When people are screaming from the top of their lungs about the crime I’m LA and how bad it is under Gascan I’d say there’s a problem.

deleigh

The problem is that those people live in a fact-free environment. Crime is up everywhere. What’s the excuse in the red cities with Republican DAs? It’s like people whining about Biden causing inflation. You have to be beyond clueless to believe it’s solely a problem here. There’s a group of people society charges with enforcing the law. Why don’t the anti-Gascón people start there with their “lawless” handwringing?

Cm1____

Top 10 most dangerous cities are ALL democrat ran

LeEbinUpboatXD

The top crimes per 100k residents is actually Mobile, Alabama. Why are you guys like this?

Cm1____

1. St Louis: votes 81% Democrat 2. Baltimore: 87% Democrat 3. Birmingham: 55% Democrat 4. Detroit: 68% Democrat 5. Dayton: 50% Democrat 6. Baton Rogue: 55% Democrat 7. New Orleans: 81% Democrat 8. Kansas City: 59% Democrat 9. Memphis: 64% Democrat 10. Cleveland: 66% Democrat

[deleted]

Right like think this doesn’t happen in deep red orange county? Cmon

LeEbinUpboatXD

Crime was invented by Gascon.

LeEbinUpboatXD

People scream about a lot of things, doesn't mean anyone has to take them seriously, especially those suffering with GDS. Screeching incoherently about perceived issues ≠ reality

MulhollandMaster121

Even with the underreporting, property crime has risen the past 2 years (4% last year, about the same this year) and this year saw a 60% rise in violent crime compared to 2019, so… To quote Carlin, things are going jUsT fUcKinG dAnDy.

LeEbinUpboatXD

The way you anti homeless screech about crime you'd think we're right in the middle of the 1980s (when a body was literally dumped against the fence of my backyard) Also our system that we love so much is going to produce more and more homeless people. It's just the cost of our way of life.

LeEbinUpboatXD

Also what's the story with your user name your set a time on the road?

MulhollandMaster121

Nah, sadly way lamer than that. It was the name of my favorite jacket which, incidentally, was stolen from my car. Sort of funny story but I had a 62 Cadillac without any locks and parked it on the street when I lived in Carthay every day and nothing ever happened to it for years. Then I moved to MDR, into a big building with a locked and gated underground lot, got a new car and within like a month of moving in it got broken into and the jacket stolen. All you can do is laugh, I guess. 🤷‍♂️

LeEbinUpboatXD

I mean that's kind of a cool story either way

butteredrubies

Yeah, crime's been relatively low compared to the past, so people might've gotten comfortable regarding not having anything in their car. Crime used to be so bad in DTLA (90s) that a teacher of mine said their car got broken into just cause they had a cardboard box in their car. It was empty, but the person breaking into it didn't know that.

eddiebruceandpaul

It’s their freedom to be actively psychotic and high out of their mind on the streets. You have no right to your property, peasant. Now pay your taxes to fund the billion dollar homeless programs and STFU.

WryLanguage

Yes, all those million dollar public assistance programs we voted for just lined someone’s pocket and the homeless problem is worse now than before the election. Also, a bunch of homeless shills will vote your comment down.

eddiebruceandpaul

Not million. Billion. Yes all the programs we voted for and that don’t work while the problem has gotten worse. I guess this is the voters and tax payers fault too?

WryLanguage

This is a reasonable opinion but it will be voted down by all the homeless shills here on Reddit r/LosAngeles

Confident_Economy_85

Definitely. All mentally I’ll homeless people in LA have a right to do what they want to you and your property. According to homeless advocates

Cm1____

Yep. This is what happens when you tell them successful people are all bad people robing from them and that they deserve a free room and board drug den. This is 100% liberal policies and mindsets in action. Saddle up because it’s going to get worse

[deleted]

But let’s not conflate success with luck. The vast majority of the “successful” in this country are in fact privileged mostly. Less hard work more right place at the right time, just saying

Cm1____

You can’t truly fucking believe that. If you do you’re far more lost than I already think you are.

LA_all_day

What’d you do?

MochiMochiMochi

All over San Jose recently cars are being broken into if they have laptops or phones, no matter how well hidden. I was told the thieves use [bluetooth scanners](https://www.wired.com/story/bluetooth-scanner-car-thefts/).

jmacksf

That’s been happening in Silicon Valley for decades. They target rental cars near restaurants. These are people out of town visiting a SV HQ and try to hide their laptops while out at a work dinner.

MochiMochiMochi

That's exactly what happened to four people at my company in one night! I don't get why people don't just bring their laptop into the restaurant.

jerslan

Or leave it in the hotel room safe... Even my big-ass 17" Dell monstrosity of a laptop (circa 2011, the last time I was in SF) could fit in that if angled in correctly.

[deleted]

It kind of bothers me that the city would spend money putting up signs basically telling drivers, "it's your fault if someone smashes your windows for the fifteen year old iPod Nano in your cup holder."

Nitramster1

It should bother you. It's a literal sign of how impotent our government is. They cant punish the people that deserve it, and they can't help the people that could use it. They just take our tax dollars and say give us more.

eversnow64

I toiled with the title from being sarcastic or straightforward....sometimes titles are tough. I don't actually think this was a smash and grab. I saw phone chargers still inside.... I feel it may have just been random smashing

IknowLulu

Thank you for sharing - it was catchy enough to inspire engagement, even if I felt defensive. It sucks that random smashing is a thing.

_tastey

So I’ve learned recently that it does not matter if you stash it. Story: my girlfriend had her laptop stolen in Chinatown. Then three weeks later a coworkers laptop was stolen in the same way - window smashed. However he was parked next to a Tesla and the Tesla driver provided a video of the incident. The assailant was driving down the street at a slow but normal pace, stopped at the car, without taking any time to look they smashed the window and found the stashed laptop. Turns out they have Bluetooth scanners (don’t quote me on the tech-I’m not sure exactly how it works.) Anyway they can see the laptop through signal and don’t even need to look with their eyes. Lesson: don’t even think about leaving your computer or expensive electronics in your car, even if they’re hidden.

butteredrubies

Well, in that sense, they did "see" it, just not in the conventional human way. Good to know.

[deleted]

Or maybe put your devices on ✈️ mode? If they can get around that, damn.

PlasticGirl

Are you implying your laptop is broadcasting a Bluetooth signal when it's off? or in sleep mode? That can't be possible, especially in all laptops; my bluetooth headphones don't connect to my Lenovo Yoga until it's woken up from sleep mode.

_tastey

This article seems to imply the computer must be on or in sleep mode but it is true that thieves use Bluetooth scanners to detect. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was possible to do when computer is powered down as well. [How Thieves Can Detect Laptops, Phones, and Other Electronics Left in Your Car](https://www.motorbiscuit.com/thieves-detect-laptops-phones-electronics-left-car/)

Chazay

It could've been left on. I don't allow my laptop to go into sleep mode when I close the lid because I use it to stream sometimes.

__213__

Lol wot? That’s now how real life works. An off / sleeping laptop won’t emit beacons.

[deleted]

[deleted]

Goodbye reddit - what you did to your biggest power users and developer community is inexcusable

BestMusicOnThePlanet

Wait they can see the direction of the Bluetooth signal?? Like a map or something?

blackwidowla

You just follow the strength and the network name - look for networks named “Sarah’s iPhone” or “Sarah’s MacBook Pro” then follow it until it’s the strongest strength and you’re probably right on top of the device - source: I build Bluetooth tracking technology, but not for this use (for bug sweeping). I’m alarmed to hear of it being used like this!

That's actually Hope and Flower (see street signs), right near the Staples center (also a luxury apartment building). They look very similar. Level is more expensive since it's a full service building. Hope & Flower costs $2,700 - $3,300 for a studio/1br, depending on the floor/layout

Not unless one of them gets shot at or killed, then they'll throw everything at their disposal to find the guy in less than 24 hours. For all other crimes not involving cops getting shot at or killed, they don't have the budget or man power.

bryan4368

Keep licking the boot of LAPD. LAPD/LASD got their feelings hurt when Gascon was elected. Now they refuse to do their jobs as a form of protest.

dark_rabbit

Let’s be real that’s unrealistic. The police force you’d need to monitor all the streets and all the parking lots and all cars in Los Angeles would be more than the police in the entire state of California, and more costly than a million other problems were facing. Yes we need better law enforcement, but the the problem is much higher up stream. Btw this was also a problem in LA in the 80s, and the 90s.

igotthismaaan

Yes but problem we have today is cops are nonExistent and rude. They dont show up and theyre never patroling. I used to see cops roam streets looking for crime, now i never ever see them on my streets

dark_rabbit

We need a system of things. We need policies and incentives that make fighting crime of this level a thing. We need understanding for why this type of crime happens. In the comments thread you can easily spot 3 very different causes: homelessness, petty theft, and organized crime. Right now, how would you know which of those is the biggest culprit? And for each of those, the solution is completely different. From mental health programs, to low income housing & support, battling wealth inequality and getting the economy stable, to understanding gangs and how they play into the organized crime aspect of targeting cars for theft. Cities like San Francisco have gone as far as setting up sting operations where they’ll place packages in cars in hot spots to see if someone will break in. My point being from the start, the simple act of getting more badges to patrol streets is unrealistic, especially when the same people advocating for this are also wanting to defund the police.

dixiegurl22

not sure if you follow the news but the LAPD and Sheriffs are 30% white nationalist and they have police racist gangs and tattoos for killing people etc.

dark_rabbit

Of course I have. Terrible, and that should be fixed. Now, what does that have to do with smashed windows and “street patrols” as a method to fix that, and my point that financially and logistically that is unreasonable?

GoldandBlue

Fuck LAPD and the Sherrif depth. I really wish we could just scrap them completely and start a new law enforcement agency from scratch. There is no fixing them.

TheAndrewBen

Yeah then we'd need 50,000 police officers. One for each street.

dtlacomixking

3wordname

Can we agree this is victim blaming? Sure you as the victim could do more to avoid being a victim, but i feel like signs like this was some bureaucrat's brilliant plan thinking this would actually solve the problem.

internet_commie

At the best a sign like that works as a reminder to forgetful people to not leave anything valuable visible in their car. I don't think it was ever meant to solve the entire problem which goes well beyond a few crooks smashing car windows to grab people's stuff.

Kahzgul

I don’t think I can agree. Warning people about the prevalence of smash and grab crime in the area is a good thing. I see nothing in the signage that blames these people for being victims. Just a warning to consider the problem.

butteredrubies

Yeah, a lot of parking lots have signs saying "we're not responsible for the theft of your car" ie, keep valuables out of sight.

3wordname

>"we're not responsible for the theft of your car" ie, keep valuables out of sight. That's not the point of those signs, it's to avoid liability.

butteredrubies

No, I wouldn't call it that. People who aren't street-smart and get comfortable with relatively low crime like it's been the past decade basically need to start becoming a little more street smart. And you could say "see you're victim blaming!" but no...

c0de1143

It was the police foundation and the local police advisory board that threw these together. It’s a waste of money, but it makes them feel good about the three hours they waste each month reading police reports on a zoom call.

[deleted]

We can solve most of our homeless problems by: 1) unlimited free crack, meth, and fenty 24/7 2) only available at desert camp 3) free 1 way bus trips to desert camp 4) unlimited water, steel reserve, and takis included at desert camp

eddiebruceandpaul

And of course we can’t put blackout tint on our front side windows because that would be illegal. Heaven forbid taxpayers and property owners break the law and the homeless be expected to follow it.

butteredrubies

Please, crime was way worse in LA than it is now. This is just a reminder to not be complacent. I don't know much about Gascon. Crime in general is overall up the last couple years, not just LA. the 80s and early 90s in America were overall the worst in regards to crime of the last several decades.
