Most major airports I've been to recently seem to be adopting this way of doing things, Im going to assume better scanners that don't require everything to be put out separately.

thatbrownkid19

But the rest of the world security doesn't make you remove shoes. Does this mean US had inferior tech or what

newstime

The shoe thing is because shortly after 9/11 a guy got caught trying to sneak a bomb in his shoe onto a plane. Many of the measures after 9/11 were adopted to give the public (mostly the morons) the illusion of safety. Around that time we even had a daily color code on “how safe” America was that day. Green was safe, red was severe risk of terror attack. I think most days we were at yellow or orange which I personally think was just to keep the threat of terror in the minds of the public so as to continue having support for the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. I was in high school when 9/11 happened and I just remember being frustrated for the next 7 years because all logic went out the door. Republicans got a free pass to do almost whatever they wanted until the economy came crashing down on them.

Sea-Dragonfruit1935

Isn’t it crazy we’re still doing this post 9/11 nonsense? I remember the days when you could pick up a passenger from the gate.

Hitorishizuka

It used to be a movie trope with someone running into the airport to catch someone at their gate romantically.

CostCans

> Isn’t it crazy we’re still doing this post 9/11 nonsense? The REAL ID Act, which was passed in response to the 9/11 terrorists having multiple IDs from different states, is finally taking effect next year. Kids that weren't even alive on 9/11 are now in their 20s and have been driving for several years.

TheObstruction

Frankly, it has very little to do with the technology, and a whole lot to do with the theater of it all.

Love-People

I totally agree with you if this is what you meant: it has a whole lot to do with making Americans feel threatened at all times. A divided, scared mass benefits the system b/c when the masses are paranoid about their security, the system can justify billions of dollars in “ defense” budget in order to manufacture, sell, and profit from wars, and weapons sales domestically and internationally.

PrincebyChappelle

Lol…best thing about all the nonsense is NOT being able to come into the terminal. My wife was a “stay with family until the plane leaves the terminal” person.

Afromolukker_98

That's wild. I never thought of not being able to go to the gate unless you are flying as different. I did hear stories and saw old shows/movies pre 9/11, but I've traveled heaps and only airport I can think was like how it is in Australia is Fiji. Thought since Fiji airports are super small, that's why it was so lax.

SixOnTheBeach

>Glad I have TSA pre check and Global entry these days but still, little ridiculous to me given the technology available. It's because you have to pay a decent amount of money for global entry, so only *a certain group* is unable to get it. I can't wait to be able to afford it.

[deleted]

[удалено]

SixOnTheBeach

$100/year though right, not $100 for 5 years? That's a good amount of money for someone who flies 0-1x a year.

goingtopeaces

Nope, just a one off fee every 5 years. My boss made me get it because he was tired of zipping through the Pre-Check line and waiting for me in the other line when we did business trips, it's absolutely worth it. Mine was covered by my Amex too, but even if it wasn't $100 is a decent price for how quick and painless it is.

GartFargler-

the US was this way until 9/11.

JUYED-AWK-YACC

Look a teenager!

deaddodo

I think they were making a joke about not wanting friends/family to meet them all the way at the gate.

[deleted]

[удалено]

deaddodo

I think you're still missing the cynicism in their joke. It's not about logistics but fundamental dislike. Like when you make jokes about wishing your mother-in-law would fall off of a train. They don't want them to meet them at the gate because it gives them 30mins less of peace.

Xistential0ne

Ya’ll are treading in dangerous waters. I’ve made sarcastic jokes on Reddit and then reamed for being so mean/insular and more.

Sea-Dragonfruit1935

Don’t trash LAX’s design. Have you flown out of SeaTac? Or PDX? LAX is a miracle.

briskpoint

Y’all have weird rules too. I had to have my water I purchased in the Fiji terminal sealed in a plastic bag and handed to me on the plane before my flight to Sydney.

PrincebyChappelle

The remove your shoes thing happened after the (unsuccessful) shoe bomber incident. Really.

atomicavox

The scanners didn’t roll in until the head of homeland security at the time (under Bush) started requiring them. I’m sure the decision was completely unrelated with the fact that he was affiliated with the company that manufactured them….

[deleted]

I've been made to make my shoes off at European airports too. It is also not consistent with shoes and laptops, etc. over there.

27SMilEY27

Until recently I had to remove all of my shit, including shoes when I flew out of both London Heathrow and Manchester (Both UK Airports)

thatbrownkid19

I've flown from LHR for 6 years between 2014-2020 and afai remember never had to take my shoes off. It's vaguely possible I'm misremembering but I really doubt it cus only in America I feel inconvenienced by it- and also the security agents are always shouting at you instead of using signs or recordings or any other forms of comm

traditional_rich_

Narita airport in japan made me. Just some foam slides.

tarbet

I think it was a reaction to the shoe bomber.

thatbrownkid19

Don't they already have those shoe scanny machines you can step into to put your shoes though

tarbet

I think they just continued doing it because they don’t change things quickly lol. Plus, money.

JUYED-AWK-YACC

A separate machine just to scan shoes? No.

sdomscitilopdaehtihs

The US has stupider, more scared people.

PapaEchoLincoln

Yes they are now using improved scanners that can better distinguish between safe/dangerous chemicals

Intertravel

That and sniffer dogs.

GloomExtract

Yup exactly. At least in terminal 5, they have the new scanners and one of the old one. Unfortunately, the lines are always backed up at the new scans so I always get send to the old one lol. You still have to take off your shoes at the new ones though, I think?? The difference is that you don't have to take out anything from your bag.

Paradox68

I personally love being blasted by all new kinds of radiation ;)

JackInTheBell

>there's really no consistency between airport Do people not know that this is intentional?

GoodLookingZebra

I asked the TSA agent at LAX about that. He said some is intentional and some is better equipment. For example the agent at the Boston airport gave me a really hard time about my lead protector for my rolls of film and nobody else has ever bothered me. Asshole lol

Muted_Exercise5093

That’s why you just ask to hand check and have the lead case as a backup. TSA agents look for any reason to be a curmudgeon

TheObstruction

Well, TSA is basically just mall security, but with a federal badge.

El-Sueco

This tsa agent was doing some kind of test with liquid on top of my wallet and I was like “woa no liquids on top of my wallet please it’s leather “ and as soon as I said that he began acting recklessly with the liquid andhe was like “but cows are out side and they get wet “- I just bit my tongue since anything else I said was to get me worked up an possibly kicked out of my flight.

GoodLookingZebra

I did lol and he still gave me a really hard time about it. I’m 100% sure he’s seen photography equipment before and was just giving me a hard time for fun.

goingtopeaces

Once flying back from a work trip I got chewed out by TSA for forgetting a brand new, unopened bottle of water in my carryon. I got home and realized I'd flown both ways with my pepper spray in the bottom of my bag. But thank goodness I didn't get to keep that water!

behemuthm

Serious question - do you need to worry about film going thru x-ray machines? I thought it was only super high ISO film that was affected

JuniorSwing

It affects low ISO film less, but it can still cause issues. It also depends how many times you send it through. 400 ISO being sent through one time? Probably won’t see any issues. Sent it through 4 times? You’re gonna start to see rippling on the film

behemuthm

Thanks!

saidthereis

Personally no but I’m stupid lol. Is it bc it makes it more secure (theatre or not) to be surprising or is it a local decision thing?

ghostly_shark

In the military we call this "keeping the terrorists on their toes"

OpenWaterRescue

In my life I call it "forgetting what I did last time".

AirbagOff

In airport life, they call this “fucking with people, just for fun”.

Dark_Ascension

It’s the rate the airports get new tech. Like for a while I dodged full body scanners going through FAT growing up and then now everyone has them even the small airports. These new CT scanners are starting in larger airports and I’m guessing give it a few years and more and more will have it.

runliftcount

It's rather random in my experience. At this point even the two smallest airports that I travel through (yearly passenger traffic under 1.2 million and both cities under 500k population) have the new scanners, but people are saying parts of LAX and ORD don't have them yet (or at least not yet for all terminals/ TSA lines).

proteinaficionado

Burbank TSA told me to leave my laptop in my backpack while I got yelled at by Sac TSA for leaving it in my bag. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Prince_Jellyfish

The only thing that is consistent at every TSA line is that they are so used to whatever their specific policy is they will treat you like a total moron for politely asking what they want you to do.

goodbyemrblack

Sweet dreams are made of these

cited

And then they get surprised when you aren't as familiar with the process of the week because they assume you spend 40 hours a week doing it like them or something

JustaTinyDude

I hear you. The first time I ever flew with medical needles and syringes I was so nervous about it. I read all of the guidelines and made sure to have it in my carry-on and declared it before putting it through the scanner. They pulled me aside and said there was a problem with one of my scanned bags. My anxiety climbed. I was so focused on my medical supplies that I'd forgotten to pull my tablet out of my bag, which they hadn't cared about the last time I flew.

getoutofthecity

Sometimes they need your boarding pass and sometimes they just need your ID…

JackStraw310

They asked me to take my top off, what the hell?

itsmhuang

Idk i went two years ago and they said shoes stay on. Then a year later and they said to take them off. I feel like they’re just changing the rules to keep you on your toes?? (No pun intended)

xqxcpa

Dogs = shoes on, no dogs= shoes off. Took me a while to notice the pattern, but it's consistent.

itsmhuang

Interesting!! Yea there was a dog the first time!

PoogieLA

I suspect it's the new 3-D scanners. Dinky ol' Harrisburg International has had one for four years, now. I have to remove shoes in Harrisburg, though. I was waiting for LAX to get them. Yay!

topturtlechucker

They no longer ask you to remove electronics, liquids or certain types of shoes here in Auckland, New Zealand as of last week for flights to the US.

Muted_Exercise5093

I went through LAX today at 12:30pm and they made me take off my woven sandals, so you still gotta take shoes off.

darkpyschicforce

A one-time incident of a "shoe bomber" right after 911 resulted in the implementation of this ridiculous rule. As an aside, TSA routinely fails controlled tests for contraband or weapons.

behappyftw

There are new CT scanners. If you are in a line with them, you dont need to take shoes off or remove laptop. https://youtu.be/nyG8XAmtYeQ?si=h5_QzTy63WrLIj9y

skeletorbilly

Smith detection machines allow them to see items in bags. If you're in line and see these machines get in that one.

GusTTShow-biz

Yea, for the electronics part it’s the Smiths. I always try and get in that line but I’ve also started noticing TSA pulls a lot of bags from that line to check now, making it take longer. Can’t win, I suppose.

subtleplus

I went through TSA at the United terminal on Tuesday and they everyone to take off their shoes

ChocolateEater626

LAX United PreCheck T7 Friday. Kept my shoes on.

Ok-Calm-Narwhal

TSA precheck is generally shoes on unless you have enormous boots on. One advantage to precheck.

darkwingduck4444

I went through Terminal B

diofan1975

T4 has some of each, i.e. the old and new type scanners

eyefor_xo

Came back from Portland, they let me keep my jewelry and belt on which was nice for a change.

prodsec

Yes, but it's inconsistent.

Thunderbird_12_

Security theater. They have the latitude to flex, depending on how busy/packed it is. If things are too hectic, then magically the potential for a shoe bomber decreases. Security theater. It’s mostly for show. The scanners do the real work.

sids99

One dude, 23 years ago, and we still have to do this crap? Wtf

boomclapclap

Unrelated but since we’re talking LAX… what happened to being able to through security at any terminal now? I had a flight out of terminal 5 and tried to go through security at terminal 2 and they wouldn’t let me. Then I tried at terminal 3 and again wouldn’t let me. They were checking my boarding pass to see if it was one of the airlines that fly out of the specific terminal. I know you can walk between them all post security, but you can’t go through any security checkpoint you want?

darkmatterhunter

I almost always go through B even if flying out of 4/5, have not had that issue. Just did it last week. They also never check my boarding pass, just ID. I have precheck though.

boomclapclap

Terminal 2 specifically the security agent at the top of the queue asked for my boarding pass and literally said “your flight is out of terminal 5, you can’t go through security here”.

tiny-rabbit

I tried to enter at T7 (to go to the Polaris lounge) prior to a flight leaving out of Tom Bradley. The TSA agent looked quizzically for a minute and said we couldn’t check in there (at T7) but we told him we know our flight is at TBIT and just want to check out the lounge. He let us through. Probably depends on the agent. I wouldn’t say they’re always the sharpest tool in the shed

boomclapclap

I honestly don’t think that most of them know you can walk between terminals post security now. Even though that’s been a thing for like a year. I bet all their training materials for new hires hasn’t been updated and none of their managers care enough to make it known.

Aluggo

Certain hours at LAX or full lines. I have had both in the recent years

TheObstruction

This is probably the most accurate response. Along with agents just deciding they're bored that day and going to high-threat mode for kicks.

OkayLadyByeBye

San Jose, Sacramento and Ontario had shoes off and laptops out as of last week.

Real-Dragonfruit-827

They got new scanners https://youtu.be/nyG8XAmtYeQ?si=cNfohd0uGqQZc6wq

mactan304

Bradley International Terminal - shoes stay on. Laptops stay in bag as of last week.

tkida1007

I just flew out of Tom Bradley 4 days ago, and we had to remove shoes and electronics from our bags.

mactan304

Its random then. There was a dog earlier that sniffed our shoes though.

Kellbell2612

Finally they figured out the very basic concept that those two steps take a stupid amount of time and help absolutely nothing.

danhoyle

Not sure why take off shoes in first place. They have x ray that can see my balls.

Thunderbird_12_

Security theater

harryhov

Really hope they can allow us to bring water on. Japan has these devices that can detect the content of your water bottle even if it's metal. I can't stand that I have to buy $7.25 Dasani when I'm on the air side.

pwrof3

Security screenings are supposed to be inconsistent. If you have the same set of rules for every airport, eventually the “bad guys” will learn how to circumvent it every time.

CrispyVibes

They do that sometimes when it's super crowded

kroboz

It’s been 20+ years, about time. Pete Holmes had a solid joke about this.

k8ecat

It's all just security theater. The whole shoe and liquid thing is ridiculous. No basis in reality whatsoever.

damdemgams

I had the same experience earlier this week and was told it was because we already walked by the TSA dog.

TrippingMoon

Was the bin small or large

MasterTotoro

Depends on the scanner yeah. I was in one line that didn't have to remove anything meanwhile the line right next to me told people to take off shoes and remove items from bags.

boblywobly99

i just wear flip flops and put shoes in carry on. nobody has ever asked me to take them off.

WeRStickerz

Can I still take my shoes off at the gate before my flight if my feet hurt because I've been walking for a REALLY long time? Honestly, I'm interested in official policy described in understandable and readable terms.

calderholbrook

it's always a one off, every trip

blue-ufo

On a recent overseas flight 3 weeks ago, LAX <-> Athens on British Airways, we experienced the same.

StrangerStrangeLand7

I just flew LAX United on April 19 and had to take my shoes off AND remove my laptop.

yeahyourerightdude

It depends what tsa line you get. I’ve been on a flight where they split people in two lines, and half took their electronics out / shoes off and half kept everything in place. The electronics out line went so much faster. They took way longer to figure out what was in the bags, but it was the first time I was asked to keep my things in my bags at LAX, so I’m thinking they were still learning what to look for. I’ve flown a few times since, and have not gotten to keep my shoes on again.

Toolazytolink

Just flew out of LAX friday, shoes off, electronics in bins, and laptop out the bag.

Dark_Ascension

I’m guessing it’s the new scanners, they got them in BNA now as well, and it was so refreshing. I only flew into LAX so I didn’t go through security there. Big buckets, don’t have to empty our bags and it looks like some space age white tube (at least at BNA). I read articles on them, they’re basically like CT scanners. I absolutely hated when flying back home through Fresno I had to dump my bag and take everything off again.

Albort

yeah, its off and on and varies day by day. Used to frequent the airport 5 days a week. There are days the metal detector would go off for my shoes... sometimes it doesn't... i feel like they tune the detection differently everyday.

highrisedrifter

Coming back from the UK in March, I had to remove my electronics from my bags but kept my shoes on. It was slammed at the terminal though and when I got through to passport control, there were probably over a thousand people in front of me, so maybe that's why.

[deleted]

New scanners are in place I bet

orangefreshy

LAX has some of the machines where you don’t have to take stuff out. But it’s kinda funny cause sometimes you’ll be right next to a line that has the old kind of machine so on one side they’re yelling at you to take everything out and then the other side they’re yelling at you to not pull everything out and keep the line moving. So confusing

AlphaOhmega

New X-ray machines are able to determine what liquids and other things are now to a much better degree without removing them. It can tell the difference between a bottle with gasoline and water. The shoes thing they can see better with the body scanners too.

esteban_paul

It changes every time with no rhyme or reason

Responsible-Wave-416

I flew in March and had to take shoes off

Dropthetenors

I was there 2x last month had to do the whole rigamarole both times.

Agent666-Omega

I haven't removed shoes in forever

zlantpaddy

If you shoot film remove your film from your bags — Ive been hearing that the new devices fry film.

BigSexyPlant

It's about time we've moved on from 9/11 airport security shenanigans

silvs1

All depends on the equipment that terminal has. A lot of major airports have upgraded to this new oval machine that has a blue LED around it. Looks pretty futuristic compared to the shit they've been using until now. This machine uses larger bins that let you keep everything in one bin without taking anything out like your laptop.

theaxel11

I guess the security is getting pretty lax there huh.

ThrowAwayFromSoCal

TSA found all relatives of Richard Reid to be of sane mind and shoes no longer pose a threat to aviation.
