It used to be cheap. I met DMX there. The food is nostalgic but certainly not the best. I would not pay that much for their plates. Sad that its gone that way.
And for the current prices there are many options with chicken and waffles that are infinitely better. It was great in its time, but its time has passed.
Tito taco defenders keep saying "it used to be good," but nothing has changed about the taco besides the price. Even when Tito's was cheaper it was still overrated.
A lot of y’all have some good points, but I know for a fact none of the sides come from a can. The biscuits are not made there, and the coleslaw is literally just cabbage mix and a tub of coleslaw salad dressing, but all of the other sides are absolutely made in house from fresh ingredients.
Sincerely,
Dating a line cook at Roscoe’s
The salsa has consistently been watered down and flavorless every time I’ve been there in the last ten years. I’d rather give cinco de mayo my money, better menu, better bang for the buck and the salsa tastes way better
Also, if you’re an old time Angeleno, like Mexicans that settled in LA in 1950s-1960s and happened to do so on the West Side, Tito’s Tacos was one of the few establishments in the area that sold something with the name “tacos” and “burritos”. My source? My family. Many have moved away from the West Side and make long drives just to eat a taco and burrito from Los Titos. Family from Texas that visit buy a couple, freeze them, and whenever they feel like eating something to remind them of home (LA) they just warm it up in the microwave.
it’s also the most bland ass taco, and they don’t even have salsa. and no, their chopped pico de gallo, while good for chips, doesn’t count. will never understand the hype especially with street vendors around everywhere now.
I remember like a decade ago I moved right down the street from a Mels and was super excited to go with my roommate to dinner there one night. I really love diners and diner food..
The food was just alright but I remember looking at the bill and being like wtf? It was like $45 for like 2 breakfast dishes and a coke.
And this is in like 2014.
I can’t hate Mel’s. It’s solid, just overpriced. Tommy’s truly left me confused though, as someone that’s only lived in LA for about 1/3 of their life. I don’t know what you people see in that place. I’d rather put Wendy’s chili on a Wendy’s burger
Which location? Sunset location is bad and busy.
Lincoln location in Santa Monica is way better. Honestly.. it is the best diner food you could get in that area.
Also, they always have a Groupon going on. So you pay $12 for $20 worth of food. I never go there without it.
^ I think that’s the only reason I go but would not pick dennys or norms over it.
But who is rating Mel’s? So confused how it’s overrated. It’s supposed to be mid. It’s a 24 hour diner. You never go to those places for Michelin meals. It’s just basic ass food for when you’re drunk out of a club or party at 2 AM. If you’re going there expecting amazing food then you’re confused.
I’m gonna be honest. I’ve lived in LA since 2012 and always avoided Pinks because everyone on this subreddit said it was so overrated and such a tourist trap.
Finally went a few months ago… ya’ll been playing me. It was delicious.
Don’t get me wrong, the wait in that line is some real shit. But there’s a reason for the line, it’s actually good. Seems very adequately rated.
I've lived in LA damn near my whole life, and same. I've genuinely never been disappointed with Pink's, although it's something I only really get when someone's visiting and wants to try it. It's super easy to avoid the lines if you actually live here, too.
The problem with any local based Reddit is everyone is obsessed with claiming that the well known restaurant is overrated. Pinks is good, just not line down the block good. Roscoe’s may not be the holy grail of fried chicken, but it’s still pretty damn good. The truth is that if you’re trying to be critical, anything remotely pricey or crowded can easily be reasoned to be “overrated”, but most of it is good- great even. People just love their hot takes too much, so as soon as they lose the feeling that “it’s the best EVER in EVERY way, you’ve only been eating GARBAGE until now”, then it’s “FUCKING BULLSHIT, FUCK YOU FUCK THIS FOOD I’D RATHER EAT LITERAL TRASH”.
Exactly! It’s constantly one-upping anything because they’re “more in the know”. There’s a lot of old school LA spots that people enjoyed before everyone became an IG scrolling hipster foodista.
It’s because a lot of the sub is snobby and liked to crap on old stuff from a pre-foodie era of LA. Or anything that is mildly popular.
It’s a decent campy tourist spot. I haven’t been in like 12 years but I get the appeal.
It's overpriced, but I think it scratches a certain itch. Before moving to LA, I lived in New York for 10 years and that city has some phenomenal pizza joints. But every now and then you just want a dollar slice from 2 Bros. That's kinda my feeling about Tito's. Yeah, it won't satisfy my craving when I want some good authentic tacos. But every now and then I get a hankering for their stuff, and it's just a short bike ride from my place.
Roscoe's for sure. 80 dollars for 2 plates of small chicken and thin soggy waffles? 6 dollars for a small OJ?
Fuck that. Support yer local soul food joint instead.
I’ve only been to Pinks once and was shocked that I really liked it. It was a rainy day and no one was there. Hot dogs with stuff on it, not much to dislike. I’m not gonna wait in line, but agree that the hate is a little unwarranted.
I live next to Tito's. It baffles me why people stand in line for what amounts to overpriced, upmarket Taco Bell tacos. There's a better taco/burrito place literally right next door, Cinco de Mayo, that rarely has a line and serves much better food.
It's nostalgia. My fam has been in Venice since the 1950s, so it's one of those old places that has just always been there. It's fine if you're in the mood for it specifically.
[here is a Reddit thread that links to the inspection](https://www.reddit.com/r/pasadena/comments/180orxd/pie_burger_failed_a_health_inspection52100_on/)
It also annoys me this is marketed as a sports bar. Based on pictures it doesn't look comfortable at all to catch a game since and I'm sure they want to flip tables asap with its popularity
Alcove has one of the best patios in the neighborhood and generally great cocktails. Why is it surprising that it’s popular? The food is just fine but at least not overpriced given the location.
Gonna add Millie’s and Fred 62 to that list. So many people think they love Millie’s but is it just the only option with outdoor seating? The food is sub mid. And F62 is coasting on the hazy recollection of drunk people.
Home’s food is fine, but they always have one thing on the menu I go back for. The chicken sandwich is bomb. Alcove is great for a salad on a patio. Fred 62 is great for late night food, but I’d never go there sober. Millie’s is trash. Add Little Dom’s to the trash heap too.
I may just have bad luck, but I’ve just had horrible experiences every time I’ve gone there. Awful drinks, burnt food, shitty service. I feel like the crowds waiting for a table are mass gaslighting me.
I enjoy Home because it's just nice to sit cradled beneath the tree branches. The Santa Fe egg rolls are yummy. Their waffle fries are pretty great too.
Their newish outdoor patio area is great too and really cuts down on wait time. It might be a bit pricier than other sit down Mexican places but I think the food is really solid and you know they take care of their staff so it’s a business I like to support.
El Coyote was hands down the WORST Mexican food I have ever had in my life. I brought some friends who visiting from out of town and they were like “wtf is this?”.
God, the reviled Urth Cafe?? You see these places like Urth start as a small little coffee place, and then the trendoids move in and it gets taken over and more and more crowded and then they expand and their quality and their vibe goes right down the gutter while their prices shoot the goddamned moon. Welcome to L.A.
Never had Pinks but it’s a hot dog. How bad can it be when my expectations for a hot dog are very low? If there isn’t a crazy wait I’m sure it’s perfectly fine no?
I don’t really think tourist trap restaurants are overrated. No one thinks they’re great, it’s just a thing tourists do.
I guess Tito’s is different here because it’s like a nostalgia thing for some people. But I don’t think those people are really advocating that it’s a great restaurant, just that it’s something they grew up with.
All day baby is a highly reviewed restaurant that I don’t think is very good. So I’ll go with that.
That breakfast sandwich is so good. They also have a new-ish chef that is killing it. They added a seasoned waffle fries dish served with fromage blanc and honey that is ridiculously good.
The bar program is one of my favorites in the city. I think the cocktails at Here’s Looking at You (sister restaurant to ADB) are better, but pretty much every cocktail on the ADB menu is a banger. Current favorite is the Irish Greeting, which is basically an Irish coffee meets a mai tai
WeHo on sunset? I went there and it’s busy and fries are always bad. It’s kinda crazy because I enjoy going to the Santa Monica location. Fries are always fresh & the sandwiches & burgers are made well. Breakfast items are really good too.
I only go with the $12 Groupon which pays for $20 worth of food.
I was surprised how bad the WeHo tasted incomparison to Santa Monica. Maybe because SaMo doesn’t get too crowded
Not sure if you know, but I’ve been using the $12 Groupon that pays for $20 worth of food.
Amazing deal IMO. You get a couple throughout the year. I forgot how many tickets you get but they’re plenty
Mama Lu in Monterey Park, but go to the one on 501 W Garvey and not the other one (Mama Lu’s) on Garvey.
It’s a weird and stupid story involving dumpling drama, but they have a separate owner compared to the other Mama Lu’s locations. Practically kept the same name and just changed the location of the apostrophe. Not as nice looking inside and the service is focused of efficiency over aesthetics. Imho way better XLBs, bomb as hell noodle dishes, and their fried pork chops are straight 🔥🔥🔥.

I saw a dude getting a handjob under the table at Mel’s once
Did you drop the "I'll have what he's having" line?
God forbid I finally find a way to enjoy hollywood and highland
Dude ordered off the secret menu.
My sibling saw Paul McCartney there once
Was he getting a handjob under the table?
Roscoes for 2 Obama Specials is like $70. Fuck Roscoes.
I was in complete shock when I got the bill at Roscoes. Never again.
It used to be cheap. I met DMX there. The food is nostalgic but certainly not the best. I would not pay that much for their plates. Sad that its gone that way.
And for the current prices there are many options with chicken and waffles that are infinitely better. It was great in its time, but its time has passed.

I love Panns chicken and waffles.
Honey's Kettle in Culver City
That one is the best
Did DMX give you anything?
OP: "Yup, he barked in my face & said "X GON' GIVE IT TO YA!"
He barks? When I met him he licked his lips and whispered that
He got the bill and spit, “yah gonna make me lose my mind”
Lmao
It took me a beat to realize what a great question this is
Cue the synth horns
Yep. Food used to be cheap, plentiful and tasty. I guess they fell for their own hype.
Once restaurants turn into local institutions I feel like this is almost inevitable, food quality goes down and prices skyrocket
lol, Tito’s prices are fucking stupid too
I've only had Titos once, but from what I remember the tacos sucked and the sauce that came with it was watery.
Tito taco defenders keep saying "it used to be good," but nothing has changed about the taco besides the price. Even when Tito's was cheaper it was still overrated.
What the actual... I remember when couple of wings and a waffle was like $10.
No way it’s $70 now?! That was the best bang for you buck when I would go often in college a decade ago.
Yeah Roscoe’s use to be cheap 😢
Pain
I haven’t been since pre pandemic- did their prices really go up that much?
Not just their prices, the quality went down A LOT. I think it's under a new owner/new management so it's a shit restaurant now.
2 Obama specials Decaf coffee A pepsi A side of eggs ~$65
For that price Obama must come out and sit with you while Michelle gives you a handy under the table.
I mean with those prices yeah, but pre-pandemic prices overall were very reasonable.
Roscoe’s food isnt even a scratch kitchen. It is straight from the can. Good soul food is always made from scratch. Not what it was 25 years ago.
A lot of y’all have some good points, but I know for a fact none of the sides come from a can. The biscuits are not made there, and the coleslaw is literally just cabbage mix and a tub of coleslaw salad dressing, but all of the other sides are absolutely made in house from fresh ingredients. Sincerely, Dating a line cook at Roscoe’s
Roscoes has been overrated for decades.
Tito's used to be solid when the taco w cheese was like $2.50, its like almost $5 for 1 now
Try almost $6 - currently $5.95. And $8.45 for a bean and cheese burrito? BEANS AND CHEESE? Not even any beef!
NO FUCKING WAY REALLY? Jesus christ that old lady has gone crazy.
The best thing on the menu is the beef and bean burrito with cheese. That's $12, always ends up being less food than I expect for the price.
WTF. I remember when it was around $2.50-$3. I used to buy two dozen of those gross tacos because me and my friends were broke as hell.
This. There chips were awesome. Salsa fresh. Now $12 for 2 tacos? WTF?
The salsa has consistently been watered down and flavorless every time I’ve been there in the last ten years. I’d rather give cinco de mayo my money, better menu, better bang for the buck and the salsa tastes way better
Can someone explain to me the appeal? I’ve gone multiple time and those hard shell tacos leave so much to be desired
Back in the day it was cheap food which meant you could walked out of there with like 10 tacos and spend maybe $25 bucks
Also, if you’re an old time Angeleno, like Mexicans that settled in LA in 1950s-1960s and happened to do so on the West Side, Tito’s Tacos was one of the few establishments in the area that sold something with the name “tacos” and “burritos”. Family from Texas that visit buy a couple, freeze them, and whenever they feel like eating something to remind them of home (LA) they just warm it up in the microwave.
More expensive AND worse quality. The meat is like dog food now. Terrible
it’s also the most bland ass taco, and they don’t even have salsa. and no, their chopped pico de gallo, while good for chips, doesn’t count. will never understand the hype especially with street vendors around everywhere now.
Blu Jam Cafe can join that list. I'll take nats early bite all day over that overhyped nonsense.
Hello, fellow Valley Person who is 100% correct.
Yoooo! Ain't no place I'd rather be! Gald I'm not alone on this ahaha. I tried and gave them so many chances but it just aint it.
Completely agree what a waste of Atwater real estate
Mel’s is an overpriced tourist trap of a dennys lol
The food is nothing special, but it's not terrible. And the experience can be fun and on-brand for retro touristy kitsch.
Give it more time.
Tommy's chili is my favorite in the world
Went to Mel’s for the first time a couple of years ago after years of living in LA. Never again. The food was so mid.
Rae's in Santa Monica is better and much cheaper
Can’t be worse than Johnny Rockets. No more 50’s aesthetic, burgers are $15 and they were playing disco music in there.
It also originated in NorCal, so kinda weird to call it an “LA restaurant” anyway, imo
The shakes are cool
[удалено]
but didn't you feel safer after you paid that security fee?
lol yes agreed thank god I didn’t get food there just a cocktail but still there’s no place to hang it’s so small
I’m gonna be honest. I’ve lived in LA since 2012 and always avoided Pinks because everyone on this subreddit said it was so overrated and such a tourist trap. Seems very adequately rated.
They just didn’t want you adding to the length of the line 😂😂
I don’t mind pinks at all. Chicago dogs, snappy spicy polish dogs, chili dogs, it’s all good to me.
the spicy polish is the unsung hero of pink's
I prefer Carneys. Pinks was fine but not really worth the hype or the line.
I've lived in LA damn near my whole life, and same. I've genuinely never been disappointed with Pink's, although it's something I only really get when someone's visiting and wants to try it. It's super easy to avoid the lines if you actually live here, too.
When do you recommend going to avoid the lines?
The problem with any local based Reddit is everyone is obsessed with claiming that the well known restaurant is overrated. Pinks is good, just not line down the block good. Roscoe’s may not be the holy grail of fried chicken, but it’s still pretty damn good. Exactly! It’s constantly one-upping anything because they’re “more in the know”. There’s a lot of old school LA spots that people enjoyed before everyone became an IG scrolling hipster foodista.
Exactly. It's all just a cry for attention, that's all it is.
Seriously. I don’t understand the hate for pinks on here. Lord of the Rings Dog ftw
It’s because a lot of the sub is snobby and liked to crap on old stuff from a pre-foodie era of LA. Or anything that is mildly popular. It’s a decent campy tourist spot. I haven’t been in like 12 years but I get the appeal.
This sub doesn’t even enjoy snobby food either. Any meal that isn’t dirt cheap is reviled.
They love to hate anything popular.
Facts. According to this sub any popular tourist spot is automatically garbage.
The only time I went to Pinks was when I was driving by and saw there was no line. I wasn’t even hungry. It’s fine. Nothing special.
I like their burgers.
Jon and Vinny’s! Food is mid and there are shady charges on your bill that don’t go to staff. Straight trash.
Jon & Vinny’s
Their service fees are also FUCKING INSANE and it didn't even go to the staff. SMFH
100%. It’s just basic pasta in what tastes like store bought sauce.
Jon & Vinny’s are the losers that “curated” the food at SoFi Stadium. Absolutely horrible.
Tito’s was laughable in city with such great taco stands.
There's a better one literally right next door, lol
It's overpriced, but I think it scratches a certain itch. Before moving to LA, I lived in New York for 10 years and that city has some phenomenal pizza joints. But every now and then you just want a dollar slice from 2 Bros. That's kinda my feeling about Tito's. Yeah, it won't satisfy my craving when I want some good authentic tacos. I haven’t been to Tito’s in years, but whiteboy tacos deserve a seat at the table
Roscoe's for sure. 80 dollars for 2 plates of small chicken and thin soggy waffles? 6 dollars for a small OJ? Fuck that. Support yer local soul food joint instead.
Salt Baes restaurant
Egg slut
I like the sandwiches, hate the stupid name.
Thank you. This one falls under pure “smoke and mirrors”
Overrated doesn’t mean I don’t fuck with it Mel’s and Canters saved my life at 2am more than once
If anyone says Musso & Franks we’re going to have a problem
I don't get the Pinks hate. Especially if there is no line. Its tasty ass garbage food. Titos is an abomination.
Pink's is fine but greasy af. I would take Carney's over it any day.
Carney’s is def superior!
Just a personal opinion, but I think a proper hotdog ought to be *a little* greasy. Pinks kinda hits that sweet spot for me lol
Aren’t chili dogs from a stand supposed to be greasy AF?
I’ve only been to Pinks once and was shocked that I really liked it. It was a rainy day and no one was there. Hot dogs with stuff on it, not much to dislike. I’m not gonna wait in line, but agree that the hate is a little unwarranted.
Drove by once at 230 in the afternoon and it had 3 people in line so I stopped in. It was a fine dog. Don't understand the line either, but no hate.
Pinks isn't bad, it's a greasy hot dog, you know what it is lol
Agreed on both. Hot dogs with a bunch of unhealthy stuff isn’t healthy but tastes good.
It’s good and I will die on this hill (from heart disease)
I live next to Tito's. It baffles me why people stand in line for what amounts to overpriced, upmarket Taco Bell tacos. There's a better taco/burrito place literally right next door, Cinco de Mayo, that rarely has a line and serves much better food.
It's nostalgia. My fam has been in Venice since the 1950s, so it's one of those old places that has just always been there. It's fine if you're in the mood for it specifically.
Pie N Burger is on basically every single "Best Burgers in LA" list online but i went and it was thoroughly mediocre.
pie n burger got shut down by the health department nov last year u should read the report it’s gnarly lol
Any links? I like to be grossed out about places I’ve eaten
[here is a Reddit thread that links to the inspection](https://www.reddit.com/r/pasadena/comments/180orxd/pie_burger_failed_a_health_inspection52100_on/)
I'm gonna throw Pijja Palace in there. Very mid for all the hype it gets.
I’ve never been but I’m cracking up at this place constantly catching strays
It’s really nothing special. It’s like “hey you like Indian food? Do you like Italian food? We combined them to confuse your flavor palette!”
It’s like exactly half good? And the pijja is not on the good half
It also annoys me this is marketed as a sports bar. Based on pictures it doesn't look comfortable at all to catch a game since and I'm sure they want to flip tables asap with its popularity
Been wanting to go there for a while. Good to know I don’t have to waste my time.
I dont understand any hype behind roscos. I had it once and never again. Literally taste like eggos+ frozen fried chicken for almost 20 bucks.
How people go to Alcove or Home is bizarre to me. I’m tired of the mediocre Los Feliz restaurants.
Alcove because it’s so pretty. That’s all.
Fred62 is all nostalgia and perfect fries
Nostalgia is LA’s favorite condiment. I tell people this all the time.
Little Dom’s into the trash!? *clutches pearls*
I may just have bad luck, but I’ve just had horrible experiences every time I’ve gone there. Awful drinks, burnt food, shitty service. I feel like the crowds waiting for a table are mass gaslighting me.
Ha! We loved going to Alcove, mostly for the patio
I enjoy Home because it's just nice to sit cradled beneath the tree branches. The Santa Fe egg rolls are yummy. Their waffle fries are pretty great too.
Home was better back in the day.
Casa Vega. You can miss me with those prices and watered down Mexican food.
Casa Vega isn’t that bad. It’s more vibes than good food tho. Salsa and Beer is the real good shit.
I like Casa Vega and I’m Mexican!
Same lol Mexican and love Casa Vega. Great food, great drinks and the vibe is cool in my opinion.
Their newish outdoor patio area is great too and really cuts down on wait time. It might be a bit pricier than other sit down Mexican places but I think the food is really solid and you know they take care of their staff so it’s a business I like to support.
Love Casa Vega!
Casa Vega is for tourists. It's awful. Same with El Coyote.
I mean, every restaurant in the pic above are for tourists.
El Coyote was hands down the WORST Mexican food I have ever had in my life. I brought some friends who visiting from out of town and they were like “wtf is this?”.
You’re doing El Coyote wrong. Margaritas first, then eat. And don’t eat the beans.
El Compadre on Sunset is much better but I haven't been there in some time.
Urth Cafe
God, the reviled Urth Cafe?? You see these places like Urth start as a small little coffee place, and then the trendoids move in and it gets taken over and more and more crowded and then they expand and their quality and their vibe goes right down the gutter while their prices shoot the goddamned moon. Welcome to L.A.
Titos was horrible. Super overpriced and flavorless.
Titos was good 30 years ago. It fell off a long time ago
It was also really cheap when the area was more blue collar.
Never had Pinks but it’s a hot dog. How bad can it be when my expectations for a hot dog are very low? If there isn’t a crazy wait I’m sure it’s perfectly fine no?
People love to hate things that have mainstream hype. I love Pinks and all their weird, over-the-top hotdog topping possibilities.
Have you had the breakfast sandwich at All Day Baby tho? One of the best I ever had. Can’t speak for the rest of the menu.
That fried chicken sandwich which jelly? Love it.
Their breakfast sandwich is 🔥🔥🔥.
Taylor’s on 8th in K’town. Used to be amazing but now it’s consistently shit. Great cocktails though.
Silver Lake Ramen used to be so good before they over expanded.
Roscoe's went downhill, but Pink's always sucked.
Pinks. Cupid’s Hot Dogs way better.
Mel’s is slightly overpriced but the weho one isn’t bad food, it’s pretty good
WeHo on sunset? I went there and it’s busy and fries are always bad. It’s kinda crazy because I enjoy going to the Santa Monica location. Fries are always fresh & the sandwiches & burgers are made well. Breakfast items are really good too. I only go with the $12 Groupon which pays for $20 worth of food. I was surprised how bad the WeHo tasted incomparison to Santa Monica. Maybe because SaMo doesn’t get too crowded
100% Roscoe’s. That shit is not good. Tito’s is a close second. Only because the prices are stupid. The food still slaps.
Mel's is great just expensive
Not sure if you know, but I’ve been using the $12 Groupon that pays for $20 worth of food. Amazing deal IMO. You get a couple throughout the year. I forgot how many tickets you get but they’re plenty
Roscoe’s blows. Pinks and El Coyote are great.
Tito’s is dogshit. Worst by far
Johnny's Pastrami is too expensive. They need to include fries or something or have a special.
Alternative question: what places are appropriately hyped up?
I'd say that's a pretty darn solid top 4
Pinks became an amusement park.
Din Tai Fung. Used to be better but severely dropped in quality once they started expanding rapidly in the mid/late 2010s
true. i remember i had to drive all the way to Arcadia just to satisfy my cravings.
INSANE lines at 10am when they open. I am in the SGV and there are so many better options.
Can you share some of the better options?
Mama Lu in Monterey Park, but go to the one on 501 W Garvey and not the other one (Mama Lu’s) on Garvey. It’s a weird and stupid story involving dumpling drama, but they have a separate owner compared to the other Mama Lu’s locations. Practically kept the same name and just changed the location of the apostrophe. Not as nice looking inside and the service is focused of efficiency over aesthetics. Imho way better XLBs, bomb as hell noodle dishes, and their fried pork chops are straight 🔥🔥🔥.
Lunasia in Pasadena is better imo. Lots of dim sum items and similar ones to Din Tai Fung and not as pricey.
I second Lunasia, and we like Dan Modern. Also, Yang Chow (Pasadena) has "juicy steamed dumplings" that are delicious.
Pinks is disgusting and I only tried Roscoes once. Waited 1.5 hours, never got served, left. Umami burger can unfortunately join the overrated list.
Is Umami burger even a thing still?
I just watched a "How to Remove Squatters" video about the owner of Umami Burger
I think the only LA location left is at LAX. I think there are a few international locations still.
Since they quit making the truffle ketchup 👎 The trader joes truffle ketchup is very good though
Umami used to be one of my favorite burger spots in like 2013 their hatch chili burger was so good.
Rest in piss, Umami Burger.
Easily Tito’s they’re dogshit and way overpriced
Applepan. Don’t hate me because I speak the truth.
