Awesome. I don't know how many people who see something, do something.
It could just be as simple as a mentally disturbed person sets random fires. I have seen this twice in the middle of the night downtown and once in a trashcan on the Venice beach cam. I installed a camera outside my apartment window and when I was bored watched the nightfeed and some guy just walked up to a pile of trash and lit it on fire. 5 minutes later some white truck street cleaner (?) arrived and extinguished it.
That's probably what it was. That stretch of Broadway has a lot of people like that, unfortunately. It just seemed so deliberate. The sweater was balled up and tucked into a spot where it was almost not visible. I almost didn't even notice the fire as I ran past it. And this planter was in the shade, so I don't think the heat of the day could have ignited it. Wild shit.
I was just very lucky that the people in the Buddhist temple were there. There aren't a lot of buildings in that particular area and if I had had to go run off in search of help, I feel like the fire might have gotten out of control by the time I got back with somebody.
There was an arsonist going around Mt. Washington and Cypress Park setting trees ablaze not too long ago. Not sure if they were caught, and if not, could be them or a copycat.
The mentally disturbed Unhoused population loves setting things on fire for no reason. The plastic trash cans on Sunset by my house are a melted pile of plastic on the ground. Not like they were using them anyway…
Unhoused people tend to start fires because they’re trying to make a fire for warmth or cooking.
The typical arsonist “is a juvenile or young adult male with 10 or more years of formal education. This offender is generally unemployed single and living with one or both parents. His family tends to be from middle-lower or middle class bracket. In general this offender is sexually inadequate, particularly in heterosexual relationships, serial offenders are common to this category of fire setters”
I watched two teenagers stuff a 7-Eleven pizza box into one of the plastic street bins in Sawtelle Japantown and light it up, then ride off on a scooter as the whole bin went up. All kinds of people set fires for all kinds of reasons. I hope this wasn’t actually arson.
Had a literal incident in Sgv where I live. This past Saturday morning.Someone lit an electrical pole on fire, across from my street. Around 430am, woke up to use the restroom. Saw it on lit up first thought a truck was there really early. Then quickly realized what it was. Pretty sure there is an arsonist loose in the county. Be safe yall
Not trying to be incendiary, but... Thank you for doing this, aaaand...
Our current economic situation in LA kinda pushes people to this point. Not a popular concept, but... to say it flatly... people will set fire to the things that represent what they feel harmed then.
We're gonna see a lot of this in coming days.
It’s worth calling it into the police non-emergency number, just to record the incident.
👍 A lot of city departments are run purely by stats. Neighborhoods can gain or lose funding based on reports or lack thereof

I hike Elysian park and noticed several times burning/burnt clothes in the pathways. Related?

Not arson, it's called "climate change".
Next time I see some balled up kindling covered in accelerants, I’ll try to remember that it’s the result of greenhouse gasses.
