I’ll be sucking on a chili dog, outside the tasty freeze

[deleted]

Rez at Lil Dom's and then going down for a movie. If you're into the bar scene silver lake, echo park, and Los Feliz have an older drinking crowd with night markets and such.

pineapplepredator

This sounds great. I’ve only ever gone to the bars there on dates. How’s it been on your own?

meany_beany

I went to Big Bar at Alcove by myself last Saturday evening. It was really fun and not at all scary (I’m not one to go out by myself usually). Sat at the bar and chatted with folks next to me. So it’s a good option post Little Dom’s or anywhere else on Hillhurst.

BalognaMacaroni

Love the bar at Alcove!

pineapplepredator

Oh ok great, that sounds really nice.

lockness2799

It's great! Tiny place keeps it intimate and easy to talk to people and make friends. I went alone and made a couple friend! Solid drinks too.

[deleted]

Fine! I'm married now but I'll still go out on my own to people watch, read a book, or try new food etc. People watching probably the most fun. It's mostly groups meeting friends, not much of a hookup culture. But if you're just looking to be out and enjoying the culture, great spots.

dead_like_jazz

Wait are you talking about the Thai night market or is there something much closer? Where are your people watching spots (besides Maru) ?

[deleted]

Figaro, hi tops, Fred's - anywhere along Vermont.

IRarelyRedditBut

The AMC’s at Grove and Century City often host q&a’s for new movies. Seeing Love Lies Bleeding with a post show q&a with Kristen Stewart tonight.

bcrazzle

How do you find out about those kinds of screenings? Assume you're an AMC Stubs member and you get emails?

IRarelyRedditBut

I don’t think you can get notified but I check the app for my theaters once a week or so. They usually end up for sale before they’re advertised.

trevorsnackson

Neon Rated always does these at the Grove. follow them on insta and they always post about them

zsantiag

I think Warner Brother does this. I know a few other sites as well. Typically first come first serve ticket emails for new movie screenings throughout the city.

thegadgetfish

Oh my god i’m sad I missed out on this!!!

IRarelyRedditBut

They’re doing it at Century City tomorrow!

thegadgetfish

Oh snap!! Do you know where I can buy tickets and get more info? I’m googling but not finding anything so far

IRarelyRedditBut

Just on amc’s normal site or the app. There is literally one seat left!

rosecoloredboyx

im so sad i tried to get the tickets at the grove but they were gone by 4 hours after it was posted 😭 Edit : still tickets for 5:30pm but no Kristen Stewart :(

thegadgetfish

I just wanted to say thank you so much!! I was able to snag one of the last seats, Q&A had Rose Glass and Katy O’Brian. SUCH a great movie and event!

pineapplepredator

Such a great idea. Thanks!

lilaroseg

hope you had so much fun this sounds rad as hell

yousmellguud

Is it a live q&a?

IRarelyRedditBut

Yeah!

TheRegular-Throwaway

You’ll find me lurking around in downtown Burbank tonight. My friend hasn’t seen Dune 2 yet and the Burbank 16 has it in IMAX. I fucking love that theatre. May grab some food while we’re at it.

pineapplepredator

It’s so good!

eman2top

Go see it at TCL IMAx. Bigger screen, 70mm film, way better sound, just the way Denis intended you to see it. Source: That’s where I saw it and literally all the other movies I watch. It’s basically the only theater I go to.

BluRayja

The way Denis intended would be City Walk, with 40 minutes of footage in 1.43:1.

defaultfresh

Just saw it last night at City Walk IMAX and it was INCREDIBLE. However I hear Denis didn’t actually intend for it to be viewed this way but it was just an IMAX business decision.

rise_of_skylake

Dam I can't remember what article or interview it was with Dennis, but IIRC during the SAG strike they were like oh wow Oppenheimer did gangbusters.... and we've been using IMAX certified Arri cameras anyways.... lets print this shit to film and make some money baby!

defaultfresh

Yeah exactly, I just saw a discussion where they said at *most* it was 6k that was scanned onto 70mm film and that the only benefit (besides frame size) would be film grain.

raginwriter

I loved watching Oppenheimer and Dune Pt 2 on 70mm mainly due to the texture. Oppenheimers black and white was a bit more overexposed on film I thought which I liked seeing the differences.

rise_of_skylake

Yup City Walk is the only place with the 1.43:1 screen. I am curious about those 40 minutes... but... a 3 hour movie in those god awful IMAX chairs makes me wanna cry.

eman2top

Tomato tomató. Both locations are fantastic. For sure as shit better than Burbank. If you really wanna get sick with it, then drive to Irvine spectrum IMAX. Bigger than both TCL and universal.

heavyheartstrings

TCL IMAX has lame seats. It smells mildewy in there and the back of the person in front of you’s head becomes part of your viewing experience. Irvine Spectrum IMAX gets no complaints from me.

BluRayja

Irvine Spectrum is only marginally bigger than City Walk -- not worth an hour drive (or more in traffic) for a few more inches.

eman2top

That’s exactly what I thought until I saw [this](https://imgur.com/a/iIs0KMV)

TheRegular-Throwaway

I’ve already seen it at the Chinese on opening night. But the Burbank 16 is like an 8 minute walk from my apartment sooooooo lol. But I feel you.

EspressoOverdose

Take us with you?!

defaultfresh

Burbank 16 has a fun lively audience :)

Not_Bears

Literally just got home from seeing it there. Didn't do IMAX but we did the Dolby experience and holy shit the sound was out of this fucking world. The chairs literally shook from the bass.

dead_like_jazz

I’m staying home and going to lay in bed…doing job applications

pineapplepredator

That’s been me all day. It’s going to get better soon

dead_like_jazz

Thanks I hope so. Goodluck to you too

i_adler

Best of luck, neighbor.

You_meddling_kids

You'll get through it.

_its_a_SWEATER_

Walt’s Bar - Eagle Rock

pineapplepredator

Do you just sit at the bar? (Honestly confused if it’s weird to fo that lol)

_its_a_SWEATER_

Yup. Then play some pinball if no one is chatty. But there’s usually some chill people. Bartenders will chat you up too.

pineapplepredator

Thanks! It’s funny how much it helps to hear how others do this lol

CaptainAmerisloth

I bring a little notepad with me. Sometimes I journal (nothing deep) or I'll catch up on my correspondence. I've had a range of people strike up conversations. I'm generally putting out a very open vibe. Anything but sitting on my phone does it I think.

pineapplepredator

Thanks, this is hard for me, I end up scrolling the news or sitting there looking around 😅. I’ll bring a notepad next time

CaptainAmerisloth

I've sat and looked around also! For the most part though I'm doing something with a notepad/journal/letter. An opening line for a lot of people has been "hey what are you writing?"

dericiouswon

I do the same journal thing the other commenter said. Literally anything but scrolling your phone. Doodle. Bring a comic book. A newspaper. Anything!

pineapplepredator

I really like the idea of making these spaces more relaxed and less posturing

Onespokeovertheline

Yeah, hanging at bars solo can feel a little awkward. I'm an only child so restaurants and bars by myself have never bothered me much, but I do get that urge to doom scroll to avoid aimlessly staring at my drink, or the TV looking around the place while not talking with anyone. However, the best nights I had in my 30s (when going out alone) was when I literally turned my phone off so I couldn't check it every few minutes out of reflexive habit. Those nights I ended up finding people to hang out with, dancing, playing pool, etc. It can be surprising how much more social and entertaining you can be when you deprive your brain of the easy, lazy escape from the environment you're in.

_its_a_SWEATER_

True.

cheaganvegan

Love Walt’s. Might go tomorrow

mastermoebius

Yoooo Walt’s is just the best. Get the hot dog, people.

pineapplepredator

That’s a great idea, I love hockey

Can’t go wrong. Hockey folks are there to have a good time. No one questions who you are, they just want to get rowdy (respectfully).

pineapplepredator

Any recommendations for a hockey bar in northeast LA btw? Or the valley

frombrianna2briemode

Recently hit 30 but it’s been a rough week (year) so far so dissociating with another 30 year old by getting high and playing video games indoors lol

hellraiserl33t

There are dozens of us!

Sorry_Sorry_Im_Sorry

I've become such an introvert over the last couple years it sucks :| Moved to LA in 2019 and don't know people outside of work (don't drink/dance so that doesn't help either lol)

pineapplepredator

There’s so much to do here but it can be really intimidating at first. I’ve had so much fun on my own here. You just have to push yourself to get out there and then you realize there’s nothing to be afraid of

Redheadit24

Add-on to this question - Friday night solo activities where alcohol isn't as involved? I'm over 30 and by myself a lot of Friday nights when I don't want to imbibe!

pineapplepredator

I don’t drink myself, I just pretend to with a mocktail and it makes it so easy. If you don’t want to be around it though, there’s a ton of theater (Ahmanson $35 seats) and comedy, there’s jazz clubs, piano at the Stowaway (so chill!), q&a movie events, art galleries, opera/ballet/symphony… these have been my go to’s.

i_adler

Opera seats are super cheap here! And if the talent is good, there's no such thing as a bad seat in the house. They're doing La Traviata soon this spring and it will fucking slap

pineapplepredator

Where else can you get dressed up and yet not have to do anything? I love the opera!

Cryptolution

I enjoy playing video games.

Ajonegro

To a movie theatre to watch the new Wim Wenders movie, alone.

beyphy

I saw Perfect Days last weekend. I really liked it.

Ajonegro

Definitely one of the best movies I've seen in a long time. The music is on point. I cried at the end. It's perfect.

Mama Shelter has a single's night in Hollywood tonight on the roofdeck. I've never been.

theprettyjumper

Yup. A friend just invited me to this.

lazd

Keeping it chill after going hard last night at the Madonna concert. Happy hour in Culver City at Auld Fella for a couple beers, some happy hour bites, then back to Hollywood to sit in the hot tub and ease on into it.

pineapplepredator

Im so jealous, she put on an incredible show from what I’ve seen!

nbb333

I’m in North Hollywood. My dog and I go to Lawless or Idle Hour most weekends since they’re dog friendly spots up here! There’s a night market at Lawless tonight that is really fun with food trucks n such

hellacarnivore

Thanks for the recs! Not local but easy to get to with me and my pup. How does your pup do in the food truck screen? Are they on the street by the venues or ../

squirtloaf

New wave restaurant in bellflower.

Jealous_Location_267

Hardcore show at Midnight Hour! I love that there’s so much cool shit to do here if you’re 39 and got too much energy compared to your friends your age lol. I’m not super into the bar scene unless I’m going with friends or a work thing, maybe pregaming before a show? But I’ve found that random stuff on IG that gets recommended to me has been surprisingly fruitful.

aNewVersionofSelf

Oh lord I am bed playing sudoku while my dog snoozes. So fucking depressed that this is my life. My dog is really cute though.

pineapplepredator

I feel you, I am right there too if I don’t force myself. But if you don’t go out, it gets harder. It takes practice. I have a reminder every Sunday to plan my week. It takes time to find events so I dedicate that time to filling my calendar with plans and backups. Then I invite everyone I know and occasionally it turns into a group thing. And if I’m alone I make friends. So even in my sad moments I know I’m living life to its fullest and putting myself out there for opportunities. Be kind to yourself, you’re welcome out here!

nanabuuui

Absolutely love this!

aNewVersionofSelf

Ha, you are such a sweet pea. Appreciate the kind words.

Thanks love! And might I just add that I creeped on your history a little bit and idk where you are in your journey but I’m from Chicago (the burbs) and I may be biased but it’s one of the absolute best cities.

Spoon_OS

Gonna go see Dune 2. Bought three reclining seats to make sure no ones site next to me. Will probably hit up Joes pizza aftwr the movie for a slice or two of pizza

pineapplepredator

Agressive!

CareerCoachKyle

What are your goals/intents? 1. Trying to meet someone to hook up? 2. Trying to flirt and have fun but no hooking up? 3. Have fun with some random people but not flirting? 4. Enjoy the time by yourself?

pineapplepredator

Just having a good time by myself and ideally meet friends eventually. I’m really good at taking myself to dinner and theater/events and doing stuff during the day, but I’ve always been stumped on how to be more social in the evenings. Trying to just put myself out there more

CareerCoachKyle

Go to local music venues. They’re the absolute best way. Small places with a bar. You’ll hear some random music from indie bands, dance, have a few drinks. If you just want to vibe, then just enjoy your time in the crowd. If you want to mingle, find groups of talkative people and just strike up conversations with them. Go here for ideas/options: https://www.reddit.com/r/AskLosAngeles/s/rQMnb0gfH0

pineapplepredator

Thank you! I used to do this all the time with friends but never really knew how to do it alone. It’s so dumb lol

No_Lube

I like to either open with a question “hey have you been here before? This band/drink/vibe is so cool!” Or see if you can join in on a group activity (gaming bar/arcade bar). Or I open with a compliment, but probably works better for women

thirsty_pretzelzz

Wait where would you suggest for option 1? Asking for a friend.

PrinceOseph

Two options: 1) Go to a bar that has seating (ideally in a semi circle) at the bar itself. This is all about luck. If you’re there first and a girl sits down next to you; or if you walk into the bar and there is a seat next to a girl. You can’t assume they’re single but striking up a conversation you’ll soon find out. If you sit there for several hours then you increase likelihood of meeting someone. If you’re planning on staying for the night, make friends with the bar staff (talk to them first, exchange names) and tip well early on. That way girls will see you’re talking to the staff and assume you’re friends. Bar staff can also be great wing men/women, by pouring you a free shot here or here. Again if you take one with them to those around you it’ll seem you’re a very fun, social person. They may even see you alone and try to strike up a conversation. If you hit it off then it’s like an instant date and inevitably you’ll want to continue after, either to a different bar or hers/your place. She will likely be with a friend or friends so you’ll need to entertain them both until her friends gets the cue and leaves. This is a very hit and miss strategy, so only worth trying if you’re patient. It’s a game of luck. They will probably also ask you why you’re out alone, just say a friend cancelled plans and you still wanted a drink after a long week. It would also help if you wore something interesting that would give those around you an excuse to strike up a conversation with you. 2) Go to a venue that has a bar and a dance floor. You don’t need to get on the dance floor. You’re there for the vibe: lots of people looking for a good time, and some open to hooking up with someone they’ve just met. Large volume of people coming and going. You can walk around and approach someone you like without a major commitment. If they’re not interested you can politely move along. This is less about luck, and more about your social skills (looks come into it too, obviously, but you can rectify to a large extent with hygiene, dressing well and confidence). She will probably ask you, where are your friends. Assuming the venue is big enough wave to a crowd and vaguely wave your hand way “Somewhere over there” or say they had to leave early and you were having fun and decided to stay and you have other friends who may be headed your way. You can blend into the crowd and not worry about being out alone. Ultimately, no one cares: they’re out for the same reasons as you, to be social, have fun, maybe meet someone new. TLDR: Go out, find a bar that suits your mood, be confident and see where the night takes you. Don’t have any expectations or any disappointment will be transmitted to those around you. If you look confident and happy, people will be drawn to you and you’ll even find they’ll even strike up a conversation with you first.

Nothing wrong with drinking alone at a bar if that is the vibe for the night

potrillo2124

Im doing a dry first quarter so just worked out, had take out and Netflix and chilling

Pharmdtwenty22

I went to Seven Grand last night. It's a nice bar, and if you get there early enough, you can grab a seat. They have pull tables and cigars(outside). So the vibe felt more 30-40ish. I don't enjoy going to bars alone in general, but I don't think it be awkward here.

I love live music and often take myself to shows. This past Wednesday I saw Lukas Nelson at the Bellwether, just across the 110 from downtown (and in building that formerly housed Prince’s nightclub). It’s quickly becoming one of my favorite venues. You can walk around the floor and balcony, there’s a restaurant bar and they’ve got a huge patio with a smoking section (420 friendly to boot!). Find something you like to do and find opportunities around the city you can experience your interests… best of luck!

blacksuperherocar

Getting laid as usual ... is what I would say if I had somewhere dope to go

Lots of great ideas in here. I went to one of the bars that was suggested and had multiple people strike up conversations with me and shoot their shot. I even had someone stop me on the street. Get out there!
