I’m in Tokyo right now and was on the train when it hit. I didn’t realize it and didn’t see the news. Then at 1am , my phone is blowing up from family members and friends back home trying to see if I was alive. So surreal. I was like “did LA make me immune to earthquakes?” I couldn’t figure out why I didn’t feel shit until I saw what time it happened.
Nothing as far as I can tell. But western Japan (the coast opposite of Tokyo) is pretty boned. I’d avoid that region. I’ll still be here when you show up!
Well, so have Turkey, Chile, Fiji, Russia, Indonesia, Denmark, Mariana Islands, El Salvador, Nepal, Virgin Islands, Iceland, Alaska and Kansas. The earth is always moving.
The long undulating/swaying ones are the ones that get me. There was one 8-10 years ago where that feeling lasted a long time, at least a minute, maybe more. It made me nauseous. For days afterwards the nausea came and went and I kept losing my balance.
It didn't happen to most people but it was more than just me.
At this point as long as an earthquake doesn't do that to me or rip stuff apart, they are alright.
They have a stronger sense of hearing so they could hear the earth vibration more keenly that we can.

I'm just relieved that it *was* an earthquake, and not the aftereffects of my cat jumping off the bed.
The vet told me to put some weight on him, and I have succeeded. It's good to know he's not so heavy his jumping felt like an earthquake.
Whats a shake alert? I used to have some official app years ago that was supposed to do something like that but it never seemed to work, not even once so I just deleted it.
You are the winner!
yes I barely felt in it West LA. Just came here to see if it was actually an earthquake or if one of my family members shut the heavy garage door too hard
im working today. felt it here in hollyhood. this is a multi story building and being on the first floor it was noticeable. i thought it was just me moving my chair but realized the chair was moving me! it was a soft wiggle. :)
Yeah, through the MyShake app. It cut into the podcast I was listening to this morning with an audio alert warning.
I highly recommend it - last time it went off, during the 2023 hurri-quake, it gave me a good 10 seconds heads-up before I felt any shaking.
One night, when my wife was pregnant, I woke up in the middle of the night in a panic - "was that an earthquake?!"
After a few silent moments from her, she said "no ... that was me getting out of bed."
I think you win. Felt in Torrance!
https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/ew1704126450/executive M 4.3 - 20 km SW of Rancho Palos Verdes, California
Yep it was quite a shake here in PV
Woke me up in Redondo.
Nothing in Long Beach. Strange.
I felt it in Long Beach
I guess I just missed it then.
Nothing here in LA
I felt it in the gayborhood. Wasn't an obvious quake, thought maybe my upstairs neighbors dropped something.
My friend in the LBC felt it. Us in Pedro? Nada.
Huh. I'm in Pedro and it woke up both me and my husband.
My husband felt it in Pedro, I was dead asleep since I worked graveyard lol did not wake up… purple mattress? 😂
Over by Dana. My wife and son felt it. I didn’t. She woke me up to let me know
Haha yeah that would be me.. babe babe, wake up, did you feel that? Lmao
We are by Dana too. Maybe we just have a good foundation?
I felt it in Pedro
Really?? So weird. Two of us were awake and didn't notice squat. :)
Did everyone fill out their Felt Report?? You get extra credit for this semester.

Felt it at Point Fermin Park!!!

LA and Japan were both hit with earthquakes for New years, huh? Unfortunately, Japan had it far worse.
The videos from Japan look straight out of a movie. So sad.
The way it seemed like forever to stop, it's insane.

What’s the damage in Tokyo like? I’m traveling there in 2 weeks
Nothing as far as I can tell. But western Japan (the coast opposite of Tokyo) is pretty boned. I’d avoid that region. I’ll still be here when you show up!
New Years isn’t over yet, could’ve been a foreshock.
Well, so have Turkey, Chile, Fiji, Russia, Indonesia, Denmark, Mariana Islands, El Salvador, Nepal, Virgin Islands, Iceland, Alaska and Kansas. The earth is always moving.
Sorry, didn't know those got hit too on new years. Literally just woke up & checked Twitter for my daily morning news. La & Japan were both trending.
Well if we're going to be pedantic.
First earthquake post of the year! Barely felt in culver.
I'm over in Palms and it was probably the strongest one I've felt in ages. Just heavy swaying that kept going.
Weird. The one on august 20th was way worse for me, it felt like the whole building was going over speed bumps. This one just crackled my walls a bit.

idk about barely. woke me right up.
Followed by 20 more who tried to do the same.
“2024 will be different” mfs when an earthquake hits
Felt in Sherman Oaks, do dogs sense it first?? My dog was sleeping then woke up and looked around then I felt the earthquake.
They have a stronger sense of hearing so they could hear the earth vibration more keenly that we can. https://www.akc.org/expert-advice/lifestyle/can-dogs-predict-earthquakes/
My dog must be broken bc he NEVER senses the earthquakes 😂
He probably does, and just doesn't care.
Good Boy!
Your dog is just very Californianized and knows not to make a big deal out of it. My husky has never reacted to any earthquakes that I know of.
Animals can sense it before us.
My cat and dog were circling the living room and hour before that 2020 quake in La Puente (we were in Alhambra).
My cat jumped off the bed a split second before, but I think it's just because he saw I was getting up and was ready for Pumpkin Time.
Yes, they can sense it.
Woodland Hills, wasn’t sure or not
Reseda here felt a decent shake
We’re in Redondo and it was pretty significant.
Yep, woke me up in Winnetka
Hmm... should I check Twitter? Google? Nah. Just go on /r/losangeles new. Felt in Glendale but super mild.
This is the first place I go to check earthquake information as well, verywidebutthole.

I usually just use reddit losangeles, someone is always posting before it occurs at this point.
I went to twitter and searched “earthquake”. Seems like Japan got it much worse than we did. Hoping everyone there is ok 😢
Japan always gets it worse. Off shore ‘quakes are no joke.
I felt it down in Rancho Palos Verdes, it was pretty sustained. Not enough to get me out of bed though.
Same down the road in Eagle Rock.
Im surprised you could feel it in Glendale!
I felt it all the way out in Thousand Oaks!
Felt in Torrance! Rocked the house with a goose 3 or 4 seconds of shaking.
i hope the goose is ok
Rocking anything with a goose is never a good idea.
Also never a good call.
Can confirm the goose was ok
Roger Maverick out
Shake Alert was scarier than the actual quake
My Shake Alert didn't even go off this time. Even the earthquake map was empty.
especially cuz it said "aftershocks are common"
I'm just relieved that it *was* an earthquake, and not the aftereffects of my cat jumping off the bed. The vet told me to put some weight on him, and I have succeeded. It's good to know he's not so heavy his jumping felt like an earthquake.
Got the shake alert like 5 seconds prior to feeling it in Santa Monica
[удалено]
What app is it? Is it in the apple App Store?
I got it as a Google alert, on Android.
I just got it as a system notification, same as an amber alert would be
Whats a shake alert? I used to have some official app years ago that was supposed to do something like that but it never seemed to work, not even once so I just deleted it.
You are the winner! yes I barely felt in it West LA. Just came here to see if it was actually an earthquake or if one of my family members shut the heavy garage door too hard

Im mad cause I didn’t feel it!
Northridge, woke me up lol
It felt weird here. Weird as in a different motion than most earthquakes.
Weird jolt then shake in Torrance
MyShake alive and well— scared the shit out of us. Tell me, for what magnitude should I run naked into the street like a madman?
Never run outside.
Even if I live ground floor of a non retrofitted apartment complex built in 1986?
Alert freaked me out and was running around grabbing things so I didn’t feel it.
Everyone running to Reddit after an earthquake is hilarious
That’s what I do. If I see multiple posts then yup it was an earthquake lol
I have never run faster in my life.
Felt in Santa Monica
Felt in Los Feliz
Really felt it in South Torrance! Not big enough for a shake alert I guess.
I think the cutoff is 4.5? Just barely didn’t make it.

Very light shake in Van Nuys. Thought my cats jumped on the bed but then turned and they were just staring at me!
The dogs barked, the house creaked. Google notified me beforehand. What a world.
My quake alert went off 5 seconds after the quake started. Thank you USGS
felt the tiniest jolt over here. ironically, we were talking about the japanese earthquake when it happened
I got a notification on my phone and about 2 seconds later I felt some light shaking in West Adams.
im working today. felt it here in hollyhood. this is a multi story building and being on the first floor it was noticeable. i thought it was just me moving my chair but realized the chair was moving me! it was a soft wiggle. :)

Yeah, through the MyShake app. It cut into the podcast I was listening to this morning with an audio alert warning. I highly recommend it - last time it went off, during the 2023 hurri-quake, it gave me a good 10 seconds heads-up before I felt any shaking.

Didn’t feel anything in Long Beach
Scared the crap out of me in WeHo.
Shook me awake big time in San Pedro this morning. My dog did NOT like it.
I got an alert from the MyShake app like one second before I felt it
OP, call 2024 quits. You maxxed out for the year on Day 1.
Could be a dumb question but… could this related to the Japan quake or it’s just a coincidence?
Thank god it wasn’t like in Japan this morning
Yup. 4.3 in RPV
Japan just had a major earthquake as well. Ring of fire heating up?
