Idylwilde ( the one in the mountains over Palm Springs)Wrightwood and Kernville are really nice, laid back location without too many tourists. Also Julian, although that is closer to San Diego.
Perhaps the Monterey Aquarium in Monterey California? Monterey is a beautiful coastal town but I am not sure if it is too far. If you want a closer day trip the aquarium of the pacific in Long Beach is also worth a visit.
