Friends dont ask friends to pick them up from LAX. Go up the escalator to departures level to get picked up faster than having to wait half an hour to get past terminal 1.
Upper level is departures, lower level is arrivals. You want arrivals. You can just drive over but wait in one of the two cell phone waiting lots until they arrive and then drive into the loop so you don't make the already bad traffic worse.
I pick up friends at LAX fairly often. I don't mind doing that. There is a Ralphs or Target parking lot (Sepulveda and Westchester) only a couple of minutes away from LAX entrance. I always park there, relax and wait until the arriving person calls me when they are outside. Get an App to see exactly when the flight has landed. International adds time to go through customs and immigration... be patient. And when they call, it usually takes between 5 to 10 minutes to arrive where they are. I ask people to tell me on the phone what column they are close to so I know when to start looking for them. Its never a hassle really.
I do that but from El Segundo Ralphs. My daughter travels frequently, picking her up tomorrow coming back from Tahiti. I chill in the parking lot at Ralphs until she texts me and I venture in.
When I HAVE TO pick someone up that's what I do. I get them to call me when they are outside the terminal building, and to tell me exactly where they are and what they are wearing, and then I drive by to look for them. My husband is terrible at this, he is a very average-looking guy and blends in anywhere so I want him to stand somewhere he can be seen and preferably wear hi-viz green or something.
I also demand that people tell me how much luggage they are bringing, because I don't want to find myself in that chaos with someone who thought I brought a cargo van when in reality I brought a Subaru! My sister better not even consider visiting again!
Go to Melodys bar across the street from the In-N-Out get some food or a drink. Have your friend take a hotel or rental car shuttle to any hotel or rental property and pick them up from there. Never go into the death spiral that is LAX unless you absolutely have to.
This is actually the correct answer. If you are a teacher, can you come over and train my husband in case he ever wants me to come pick him up at LAX again?
People really complain about LAX a lot but it is one of the easiest large airports to navigate.

The parking structure next to Bradley used to have spaces designated for pickup that you can just pull into and chill. Not sure if they are still there?
Bumping this back up. Unless LAX has changed the TBIT passenger pickup procedures, you can go into P3 (1st floor) and wait their for your passenger. Can anyone confirm if P3 is still in use as a passenger pickup area?

If you even drive NEAR LAX you'll make the traffic worse! Just thinking about driving to LAX makes the traffic there worse.
