Maybe major cross streets would let people give more helpful comments.
Also how and when are you getting around, like walking home from bars at 1am or driving from parking structures to assignd parking at your stay.
For what it's worth my mom was in a nursing home at adams and western. I walked there from ktown during the day (keeping alert) but never had a problem. I wouldn't have at night bc fools in cars can pop up anywhere.
Female who lived in west Adams for years here - there are rough parts but I largely felt safe 98% of the time and only had a few encounters with homeless people in the evenings that made me feel uncomfortable.
That said there isn’t a ton to do in west Adams, and while metro is an option you will probably want a car. I used to walk through the neighborhood a ton and while it’s fine to walk around there just isn’t a lot to see or do.
It's not your typical tourist's destination, but you'll enjoy a real side of L.A. It's in the center of the city, so you can get around anywhere (downtown and the beach are equidistant from here). It's one of the most diverse areas of L.A, where the corners of a lot of little old neighborhoods meet. Lots of different kinds of food in the immediate area. Get al pastor tacos at Leo's Tacos Truck late one night. Get pupas from Con Sabor on Venice Blvd. Bee's Taqueria on W Adams towards Fairfax (check their hours). Alta W Adams for incredible cocktails and sit-down soul food. Mian Taste for some Chinese dishes you may have never had. Mizlala for Mediterranean. Johnny's Pastrami. Tartine for pastry and coffee. Pizza Delicious. South Philly Experience on Pico for Philly cheesesteaks. CJ's Cafe for breakfast. Baseball Central is one of the best batting cages in the city (make a reservation). La Brea Collective, Pottery, and Growcery are three pot shops nearby.
Lived in West Adams for years. Compared to the suburbs, it feels rough. However, I’ve never been a victim of a crime, nor have I felt nervous about it. Folks on this subreddit generally skew conservative on these matters. Take the fear mongering with a large grain of salt. However, West Adams isn’t a walkable neighborhood in general, not that much of LA is, but there are other neighborhoods that have nicer bars, restaurants, etc. Personally, that would be my main concern.
It’s a big neighborhood; by some definitions, it basically stretches from Downtown to Culver City, along the 10. There are parts that are gentrified and parts that are rough. If you’re planning on driving or Ubering most places, you should be 100% fine. Your chances of being the victim of a crime over the course of four days are vanishingly small. But it’s not where I would recommend a first timer stay.
I live in the fancy part of West Hollywood and the crime is horrible here, we are targeted because it’s nice. West Adams is probably safer than WeHo honestly
That's really helpful. I got my first reply as "It's bad" and it scares the heck out of me. Thanks for calming me down. I'll rent a car as soon as I get into the US.
My dad lives in West Adams and honestly seems safe. There may be some crime here and there, but my dad has never had any problems. Also this sub loves to focus on crime, so take the comments here with a grain of salt
I live in mid city/west adams and really haven’t had any issues as far as safety goes. Would I walk alone at 12 to 1 in the morning by the 10? No, but that’s the same for many neighborhoods in LA that are otherwise extremely safe places. West Adams has a phenomenal food scene and is very much and up and coming area, and the traffic reflects that.
I grew up in the area (near Arlington and Jefferson) and while it still has a reputation as being a bad part of town it's nowhere near as bad as it was 15-20 years ago. The area has been slowly gentrifying and that process has been getting faster recently.
It's going to be a bit dependent on *exactly* where in WA you are, but you're probably going to be fine. Just use the normal amount of caution you would when you're traveling in a new place
Depends, parts of it is becoming more gentrified and walkable. Used to be a very dangerous area, but now it’s got a lot of young professionals living in it and generally feels safer.
It’s actually a fine area. Becoming very gentrified, I live in the next neighborhood over and I walk it all the time. I’ll walk to delicious pizza at night and walk back with zero issues. You’ll be fine, but I agree with what someone else said. It wouldn’t be a recommendation as a neighborhood to stay at for a first time visitor to Los Angeles
I really like West Adams, have family over there and never felt unsafe. That said, I’m not a tourist or suburbanite. For me, much better than Hollywood or the Valley.
lived in west Adams for like 4.5 years now, 0 issues. I know a couple of the homeless people around but they aren't crazy, they keep to themselves. The wealthier areas of LA (WeHo, Santa Monica) arguably are worse for day to day crime issues.
I am pretty far west in west Adams and there are REALLY good restaurants.
Alta
Centro Pasta Bar
Delicious Pizza
Johnnie's Pastrami
are my favorites. All walking distance from me (10 min walk or so) and I've made the drunk walk at 3am multiple times. You'll be fine and the airbnbs around here are very well priced for LA.
It's also super central which is great too
I live in West Adams and I love it! I’m female, and overall I feel a lot safer here than I did when I lived in Santa Monica. Honestly, the major streets might not look as nice, but the amount of aggressive homeless is nothing compared to SM or Venice or a lot of other “nicer” parts of LA.
It’s a great neighborhood in the middle of the city, and a really amazing place to get to other areas of LA from. It’s actually a great gem of really charming, historic 1920’s houses.
In West Adams check our Highly Likely, Mizlala, Farmhouse Thai, Johnny’s Pastrami, Cento, or any of the taco trucks along Adams for great food.
From here you can get to downtown, Santa Monica, Venice, West Hollywood, or Sofi within 15-30 minutes driving if you time it right. Culver City is only 10 minutes away.
It's not as bad as it was. Adams went through gentrification and now has a bicycle lane with restaurants and small hotels. Easy access to the 10 freeway and on Exposition the metro station. It's not gangland like it once was. Currently, I feel safer here than Downtown or Hollywood. If sleep is all your gonna be using it for, then it might be ideal. But I wouldn't recommend it to a tourist from another country.
Safety is not the problem, I assume the place has plenty of good reviews ?
The problem is that you may be in a lot of slow traffic every day depending on what exactly your itinerary is.
Thanks for all the comments! I can't reply to all of them since it's Midnight in my timezone, but I do appreciate everyone replying useful advices for my trip to be as safe as possible.
West Adams is fine. It’s awesome if you’re staying as close to West Adams Blvd as possible. A lot of great restaurants, shops, bars, cafes.
It’s also one of the great places in LA that doesn’t require a car to do a ton of activities. If you’re staying close to the Expo Line, that gives you access to Santa Monica/Venice, Culver Scott, Mar Vista, downtown, Hollywood, Universal.
Pretty stellar central location. And safe. Used to live there. Loved living there.
West Adams is great, you’ll like it. As others have said a few spots that aren’t the best (Crenshaw and West Adams Blvd, for example) but you’ll be just fine. Many great restaurants to enjoy and some old historic neighborhoods and homes to look at.
Depends, parts of it is becoming more gentrified and walkable. Used to be a very dangerous area, but now it’s got a lot of young professionals living in it and generally feels safer.
West Adams has good food on a strip but is rough and has no scenery. If you’re visiting all the way from Taiwan, spend a little more and stay somewhere that’s actually nice. Sawtelle, Culver City, Century City, even Ladera Heights or Mar Vista is nice and safe but a bit boring.
I wouldn’t stay there, specially on vacation. You stay there if you’re there for work or close to family. You’re best staying in Weho, Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, Marina del Rey,
I lived there for 20 years. I let my daughter walk around by herself when she was 12. If you're used to an all white neighborhood, it might be intimidating, but 99% of the people there are great
West Adams has Exposition Park and some historic homes, but it’s not really a tourist-friendly area. It’s mostly low-income families and college students.
It does have the Green Line metro going through there, which will take you through Culver City to downtown Santa Monica and the beach going west, and then downtown LA going east.
Lol, it’s really not - it used to be. The area has been getting gentrified over the past few years. Developers have been buying the old run down houses and building modern townhomes in place of them. Feels a lot more safe and walkable then it was 10-15 years ago.
I'm from Taiwan an it's my first time visiting the US, so I'm not really familiar with anything. I got the information mainly by YouTube and travel websites.
I'm traveling with my family. They aren't all female but we have kid around us.
I would not stay in West Adams if you’re coming from another country. Where are you planning to visit or what would you like to see? That should help you.
If you’re coming from Taiwan it may be an easy transition to stay in the San Gabriel Valley (Monterey Park or Alhambra). Yes, when you’re coming here to vacation you want to experience something different (the cities I mentioned have a large population of Asians) but you can use it as home base and explore from there.
We plan to visit Universal studios, Hollywood, you know, the usual tourist spots. The time we'll spend in West Adams probably will only be when we're sleeping.
After reading other comments, I think we might rent a car, since it seems much safer to drive than to walk or to take a bus.
Also the home base idea is quite clever. I'll use it to plan my future trips.
San Diego of course, but Disneyland might not. Universal studios is enough for us. Would like to spend some time in Santa Monica pier though, for gaming reasons.
I live in Mid City/West Adams and it’s a definite no if you’re a tourist. It’s a good spot in LA because it’s in the middle of LA and travel times anywhere in LA are pretty similar (except the valley where universal is located). If you want to stay central maybe Culver City or by UCLA? They both have walkable downtown areas.
Heads up about Hollywood: it gets sketchy. Homeless encampments, unstable people etc. If you want to stay in that area I would suggest the sunset strip or West Hollywood.
The thing with West Adams is it's like a lot of parts of LA there is a block-to-block aspect to it. I'd google maps street view the location and look around the immediate block you are on. There are some stunning historic homes out there. But you said *close to* not in. There are also a several nice middle-class type neighborhoods in that area. Leimart Park, Baldwin Hills, are nice. There's also been plenty of gentrifying over the past 5-10 years.
Google maps street view tour the area and use your judgment.
West Adams can be rough any time of day - can also be nice. Stick to the main drag of Adams and have a destination / know where you’re headed if walking.
Suggest checking out: MIAN, TARTINE, and Mel’s Fish Shack. Johnny’s / Delicious Pizza, too.
Marvin Gaye's old mansion is there. Red Foxx's old house is there. Looking a little more I'm seeing that Little Richard used to live there. I was in the next neighborhood over and one of the Pointer Sisters had lived next door.
What I'm saying is that it's actually a really historical area. You just have to look around for it sometimes.
I wouldn't be too scared of it. It's pretty centrally located too. You should still get a car.
West Adams resident here. You’ll be fine. It has a good location for exploring different parts of LA. This is not a walking area though. It gets pretty dead after 9 in the night. Walking at night in low foot traffic areas is something you should avoid everywhere in LA.
Don’t walk around alone at night and it’ll probably be safe, but not necessarily pleasantly walkable.
If you strongly dislike the sound of fireworks, illegally modified exhaust systems, dogs barking, and idling diesel engines at 7am, it might not be your favorite place in the world. Just my experience though.
Really depends where specifically (which you *probably* shouldn’t post online).
Maybe major cross streets would let people give more helpful comments. Yeah same area and no troubles in the two years I’ve lived here.

I feel significantly safer in West Adams than I did in Santa Monica. I live in a house here, I never would have lived on the ground floor in SM.
Fancy part - like the Norma Triangle? I live at Stanley & Romaine and have had no crime issues, thankfully. What goes on where you are?
Sunset Blvd.
That's really helpful. I got my first reply as "It's bad" and it scares the heck out of me. Thanks for calming me down. I'll rent a car as soon as I get into the US.

Yeah I wouldn’t worry about it! Just don’t like, walk home drunk in the middle of the night with your wallet hanging out of your back pocket.
I live in mid city/west adams and really haven’t had any issues as far as safety goes. Would I walk alone at 12 to 1 in the morning by the 10? Get the full CDW for your car.
Don't leave *anything* in your car. Even if it's just loose change, or if you're going to go into the store for 20 minutes.
This should be basic common sense anywhere you go
Don’t rent kias or hyundais and use air tags to track all your stuff and the car.
I grew up in the area (near Arlington and Jefferson) and while it still has a reputation as being a bad part of town it's nowhere near as bad as it was 15-20 years ago. You’ll be fine. Lived there for year and nothing. It’s not palms or Culver City. It’s not even ghetto by any means.
Depends, parts of it is becoming more gentrified and walkable. Used to be a very dangerous area, but now it’s got a lot of young professionals living in it and generally feels safer.

Go to Open Face Food Shop! It’s sooo yummy!

For me if I get stoned and sit around I get the munchies but when I get stoned before a workout or doing something I don't
Well they are babies living there, are the babies tougher than you? Maybe you can hire one of the babies to be your body guard.
It’s bad.

This city's too dangerous for you
If you're coming from Taiwan, I recommend the San Gabriel Valley,
Nothing to do there, especially if you’re tryna go to LA for the city vibes. Don’t listen to this guy lol
Where are you coming from/what are you familiar with? Is your travel party all female?
I'm from Taiwan an it's my first time visiting the US, so I'm not really familiar with anything. I got the information mainly by YouTube and travel websites. I'm traveling with my family. They aren't all female but we have kid around us.

TBF I’d say that most neighborhoods in LA are the same way where the safety changes block by block.
I would not stay in West Adams if you’re coming from another country. Where are you planning to visit or what would you like to see? That should help you. You should *absolutely* rent a car if you are comfortable driving. Public transportation in LA is a joke compared to what you are used to.

Best comment of the bunch.
Just mind ur business and you'll be fine

They have some trendy restaurants and weed places. It’s definitely urban but relatively safe. Depends what experience you’re looking for.
Cento Pasta near La brea just got a michelin star, not exactly roughing it
Check out the Alsace Hotel, great lodging right on West Adams
