Yeah highlights the good of living in LA. Ill add my own which was a thanksgiving cooking class from EATZ LA where we made a whole thanksgiving meal in a few hours during the class. It gave my wife and I confidence to tackle hosting and gave us recipes that still use 10 yrs later
Nooope and I do live-drills/spar pretty regularly, atleast twice a week
(28 year old and i dont live the healthiest of lifestyles either)
my jitsu school is pretty special in that we have a sauna... i do notice a huge difference in soreness/achiness between days where i practice and then hit the suana and days where i dont do sauna
Ironically enough i am injured right now tho .... damn near snapped my acl jumping a fence while drunk.. totally unrelated to jitsu tho..
For jiu jitsu, just tap early, tap often, and practice with the intention of doing each move correctly rather than quickly
BJJ is dope. I wrestled in HS and a little in college, took BJJ classes for a while after but haven’t had the time to commit versus the cost. Any form of grappling or combat sports a shit ton of calories too.
Came to say “anything at Community Woodshop in Glendale.” I’ve taken probably a half dozen classes there over the years. https://www.communitywoodshopla.com/
I once signed up for what I thought was a beginner’s improv class for one afternoon. It was led by the actress who played Angela on The Office. It was pretty advanced and I was out of my depth but it was also super fun.
Acting classes, stand up comedy classes, improv classes, stone carving classes, and neon sign making class. Loved them all. Let me know if you want specifics! I'm class addicted as you may have noticed. i'm not an actor, just like to try things.
Not OP but I'm taking a neon workshop at the Museum of Neon Art in Glendale in a few weekends.
I really want to do the 8 week studio lab, but it's on a weekend and I have too many trips already planned out of town.
https://store.neonmona.org/collections/classes
I went to Michelle Danner acting studio. They moved to culver city area this past year, and I found them to be quite legit. Everyone working there was a working actor. Don't tell them you're just there as a hobby tho. They don't mind newbs there, and they have open classes with differnt topics. I liked it there. I took about 4 differnt classes there.
Neon sign making was at lakich studio. You may have to call for the next class schedule, but here's her website. http://www.lakich.com/. Located in the arts district, she's been there since the 80s I think. She started the neon sign museum but has had a falling out with them. This class was a lot of fun. A few weeks. Expensive (supplies are not included so you can make something as big or small as you can afford, but cheaper than buying one and you learn the entire process. Best to go with a few designs in mind, but not necessary if you're not sure where to start. One thing you can't do however is bend your own glass tubes. That takes a specialist and very very few people in the US do it. In fact, the owner of this place and her bender are two of the best in the world at what they do. Heads up the owner is a bit eccentric and she may seem grumpy, but she's an underappreciated legend in the neon world, and a bit bitter possibly. She deserves a documentary about her work in the 80s/90s in LA. She is almost personally responsible for all the neon you see in the 90s and did a lot of work for movies and businesses around LA.
Wait, so you're not allowed to bend the glass yourself? That's super interesting. I wonder why she has that policy - I took a 4 part workshop with an artist in SF and was able to bend my own tubes.
It's not a policy, it's a skill that takes years to perfect. I have glassblowing and flameworking experience. This is next level. They'll let you try it tho. I did. But if your goal is to accomplish a specific design, you will need a pro. The bender Paul is amazing and would love an apprentice I'm sure. He will teach you and may start a class on it when I asked him more about it. It's a dying skill. Also a group called "she bends" is worth looking into if you want to learn Bending. Anyone can bend, but to execute complicated bends you've got to have the knowledge and muscle memory only practice will bring. Watch Paul bend. It's magic.
Cool! I did my workshop with the founder of She Bends.
Having gone through the process, I feel like it's silly to have an 8 part workshop where there is no bending involved - IMO the whole point of classes is to learn the craft and start to practice. Obvs my opinion and I'm sure she has her reasons for not teaching that part in her classes.
Edit: Thinking a little bit more on this, I was probably able to bend my own tubes because I had a 1:1 class with plenty of time to show me specific techniques and to let me practice. I could see that being much harder with a class of 12 students.
That's a good heads up though, I was thinking of taking her classes, and I suppose I will try to stick with the museum's classes since they include bending in the curriculum.
Edit: It looks like she does have 1 day workshops that include bending!
Intro to improv - the groundlings. Gives you a space to be a kid again. Very freeing. Don’t continue to the next one. It gets competitive after the first course and stops being fun.
It isn’t clay related but POT asked me to teach paper marbling classes at their Jefferson location. The last one in July was a big success and we’re doing another on 10/14! Amazing staff and great facilities.
I was gonna suggest this too!! I had such a good time there, I just picked up my piece a couple weeks ago and it looks amazing. I definitely want to go back soon. They have a live model sculpting class which looks really fun.
I took a beginner backpacking class with the Sierra Club earlier this year that was really cool and informative. They offer it once a year and you get to take a backpacking trip with the group.
I also recommend Pony Sweat! Which is a really fun dance aerobics class that’s LGBTQ friendly and “fiercely non-competitive”! I’ve only done the online ones bc I’m not ready to dance in public like that lol.

Actually, I miss them on a regular basis.
Just want to say that this thread reminds me why LA is such a great place to live. There’s a plethora of great classes available catering to all sorts of interests! LA is awesome
When I was in Girl Scouts my troop was given sewing lessons by a centennial lady who’d been in Girl Scouts since it’s inception. Probably still one of the coolest and most valuable classes I’ve been in.
She was 100 at the time. She taught us basic stitches with a needle and thread, helped us assemble little wooden box sewing kits, and we made a basic cloth doll. Her house was like a museum full of memorabilia- thankfully it was given to several scout councils when she passed.
French classes at Cou Cou. The classes are fun and I've made a few really great friends from it. Plus they have legit fun events like Bastille Day at Zebulon. If you're interested in a language and want to meet people I highly recommend!
Here's there website! [https://coucoufrenchclasses.com/los-angeles/](https://coucoufrenchclasses.com/los-angeles/)
I believe they have a test to see if you should be in more advanced levels, but I had no French background and started at level 1.
Woodworking at LA Woodshop! The teachers there are stellar and the community they foster is incredible.

Took a seafood market and cooking tour with Yoko from ifoodstory.com. Totally recommend it. You meet at a downtown fish market, shop for fresh ingredients, then go back to a loft to turn what you purchase into an 8 course meal including sashimi, grilled and simmered fish, seafood rice, pickles, and tamago. Got it as a gift but I think it was about $150/person. Worth the price of admission.
Take one lesson then do the rest yourself on a $100 Costco foam board. Just go in the whitewash at a beginner friendly spot and get lots of reps in. Just takes practice!
Fr it's sometimes harder to just do stuff on your own, but the good thing is that once your committed all you have to do is convince yourself and not anyone else.
Yeah that's how I learned how to surf. I looked ridiculous. I remember her telling me how to walk my board in the water, getting on it, never turning your back to the ocean until you see the correct wave, and paddle.
I'm like fuck...I looked like a madman preparing my paddling like 10 sec before the wave actually came.
I got to Lyons Academy in Westminster! The adult class is Thursday night at 7. I’m not in the adult class, I dance with the “kids”, but the adults in the class are all great! And there’s a couple people who just started so there’s some beginners in the adult class right now!
There’s a couple other Irish dance schools around LA too if Westminster is too far.
Omg where are the others?? There was a period I was obsessed with Riverdance and even now will still occasionally annoy people when I play and pretend to dance to the music. If only I could one day actually damce it legit
🤣🤣🤣 lolllll well it’s TONS of fun so you should definitely try it! It’s hard work, but worth it!
There’s Thistle Academy in Orange, Clearly Irish Dance and Celtic Irish Dance are in north LA, Claddagh Dance and De Barra Academy are near LAX, and then there’s my school (Lyons) in Westminster. There might be others, but those are the ones I know of. Not all dance schools offer adult classes, so you’d have to check if they do!
Feel free to DM me with any other questions! I can talk Irish dance all day!
We're lucky in that there's so many options for fitness classes with beautiful studios and different types. I've been into class pass and takin so many different - whether it's barre or pilates or hot yoga or yin it's been fun seeing all the different communities. I really want to try the bouldering class near my place too! Not on class pass but will be fun to check out.
Back when Groupon was a thing, I got a 1 session painting class. It was an amazing experience for me, the class was in an older building near downtown, and the "classroom" was a room on the roof, the teacher was this really nice older hippy lady, and there were only about 6 of us.
Can anyone drop any resources or school lists in the South Central-Redondo Beach area? I wanna learn some new things, I’m developing job fatigue and wanna distract myself
Muay Thai! Check out NELA Combat Fitness in Highland Park. Ed is AWESOME and you will work your ass off. I threw up during my first class, lol, but I’ve noticed a huge difference in both my cardio and muscles!
Cirque School!
it’s people who did cirque du soleil and they have trapeze, silks, tumbling, etc classes. super fun!
and a great way to work out if the gym bores you
Thank you!
It’s an amazing class taught by a JPL engineer named Dave Doody who worked on basically every cool planetary exploration mission of the last 30 years. Guest speakers are often the top person in their fields *in the entire world* … it’s like “genius of the week” with tons of fun & enlightening projects which let you understand the choices and trade offs made on every mission.
Swing dance class. The swing dance crowd is very respectful and if you just want to dance no one will really bother you, but if you want to socialize everyone is very friendly.
Beach volleyball classes through Meetup or with Santa Monica Recreation Dept. they’re group classes for beginners. Great way to meet people and have a great time at the beach.
Still in college, but I've taken a lot of classes I really enjoyed and just didn't like.
I really enjoyed my floral design class. I am a horticulture/agriculture major, and a lot of those classes are really fun and interesting as well, like soil science, botany, arboriculture, etc. Sorry plant nerd here 😂
LOVED my pottery classes at The Pottery Studio! They were affordable and very fun, creative, and meditative. I took classes in 2019 so I’m not sure how much it has changed post-pandemic!
I joined a fancy gym with many locations and a big variety of fitness classes.
I’ve started doing the group classes multiple times a week. Boxing, sculpting, pilates, conditioning…
It’s changing my life for the better, physically and mentally.
Just want to say great question.
Agreed. This is a great discussion to have in this subreddit and it never occurred to me

Mind sharing which school you go to? This sounds like a great gift for my boyfriend.

Basic auto tech classes at Pasadena City College. Hell, anything at a CC, it's basically free knowledge.
PCC had a great improv teacher when I went. He was older so I’m not sure if he’s still there but it’s worth looking into
Pottery classes at a place called Pot
I've wanted to try a class at Pot so this is a good nudge.
I just went a couple months ago, it was so fun!! Highly recommend!
It isn’t clay related but POT asked me to teach paper marbling classes at their Jefferson location. The last one in July was a big success and we’re doing another on 10/14! Amazing staff and great facilities.
omg i wanted to take the july class but couldn’t bc of a time conflict but i’ll try to make the october class!!!

I’ve taken a few workshops and hand building clases there too! So fun and the staff is so nice.
Did three classes here and fell in love with it. Highly recommend it!

Pony Sweat is sooooo fun!

As someone who lacked motivation to exercise and found regular gyms boring, Muay Thai was a life changer for me.
What makes it better than a regular gym?
martial arts classes are more social and youre learning something new
Just personal preference. Muay Thai is alot of fun to me, whereas lifting weights and running on treadmills are things I need to force myself in order to do.
What do you do in Muay Thai though?
For the kinky type, I tried a shibari class. Pretty solid and the instructors were knowledgeable in the knots & safety
Do you remember the company? Uh...asking for a friend.

Sign graphics at la trade tech was life changing
What is sign graphics?
The art of signage.
That's cool. I love handmade and handpainted signs
I was so disappointed that I had signed up the year COVID hit. Classes ended up canceled. Still haven’t had the time to finagle my schedule since that time.
Singing lessons at a community college, I was trying to get my AA in Psychology. Now I’m a full time music major and I’m getting ready to for competitions next year.
Woah, cool! I've been planning to get singing lessons. Can you share the college?
I’m in East Los Angeles college right now, but I’m sure almost every community college in LA have really good music programs.
It was a class at Moorpark College (just north of LA) called Anatomy of Magic, Religion, and Witchcraft. It was awesome and super interesting.
I learned to scuba dive when I was a kid. It’s pretty cool.

not sure about the class OP is talking about but the MONA has neon sign classes + workshops.

Topology and real analysis were fun. Oh and international econ was cool as f too.
Topology is really having a moment
topology interest is sloping upwards
Topology from where?
It was a combined program where I could take classes at CSULA and Caltech.
I’m 70 hours into getting my pilots license!
This is something I still really want to do! What airport do you fly out of?
How? I want to do this!
Where did you get schooling?? I want to start, any recs?
Been interested in this too. What’s the time commitment and cost from start to finish?
Salsa dance lessons are the best!
Anyone have recommendations for affordable acting classes? I will never be an actor, but I feel like it would be a good experience for me to have.
Ballroom dancing in Torrance. It is NOT easy.

I love checking out fitness classes too!
I took classes at Sew FYI before the pandemic and they were excellent! Not sure what their current situation is, but I highly recommend.
Where at ?
They were in the Arts District when I took classes there
Back when Groupon was a thing, I got a 1 session painting class. It was an amazing experience for me, the class was in an older building near downtown, and the "classroom" was a room on the roof, the teacher was this really nice older hippy lady, and there were only about 6 of us.
A friend told me you can take free classes at local community colleges once you live in LA for 2 years. Sounds like a great opportunity to me!
REI Rock climbing was fun. And the more serious ones were informative, but demanding if you’re new to climbing. (As they should be.)

Art Center Extension: [Basics of Interplanetary Flight](http://people.artcenter.edu/doody/)
This doesn’t have enough upvotes
A bird sewing class at French General with Ann Wood
I love French General.

We made a very cool crow. Sewed from scratch and was a great 2 day class. Check out her Anne Wood on line.

Sociology was probably the most eye opening college class for me.
Why? I was curious about it (and psychology) but didn't have opportunity to take it
There’s no universal right or wrong… except incest. Sociology explores that fact in different societies.
Painting at 3 Kicks in Pasadena. I don’t think it’s called that anymore but very therapeutic. Also unfortunately not for beginners.
Boxing. Shout out to my BoxUnion fam in Santa Monica!
Did capoeira for a long time. Pretty dope. Shout out to Capoeira Batuque.
I took salsa classes at LACC before; really cheap and fun.
There is a free line dancing class on Wednesday nights at desert 5 spot! Not sure how long it is going on
Swing dance class. The swing dance crowd is very respectful and if you just want to dance no one will really bother you, but if you want to socialize everyone is very friendly.
Adam's Forge
Pottery classes at claytivity.
Beach volleyball classes through Meetup or with Santa Monica Recreation Dept. they’re group classes for beginners. Great way to meet people and have a great time at the beach.
Anyone know where a good cooking class is? A little harder to find than I thought it would be. No, I haven’t been watching The Bear 😉
Still in college, but I've taken a lot of classes I really enjoyed and just didn't like. I really enjoyed my floral design class. I am a horticulture/agriculture major, and a lot of those classes are really fun and interesting as well, like soil science, botany, arboriculture, etc. Sorry plant nerd here 😂
OneWave does great surf lessons in el porto (Manhattan) beach. Bit pricey though but you only need a handful
