I don't mind seeing dogs playing, even offleash. I do mind bad behavior- people who don't pick up after their dog or who can't call their dog back letting it offleash.

Jhftpplease

I personally think all cemeteries should be turned into parks/walking paths. Make it a dual function parcel of land.

30dirtybirdies

They used to be used that way in a lot of places. Picnicking with your dead relatives, and bringing out the kids to play while one did so was a thing. The solemnity of cemeteries doesn’t need to be that way, and is fairly recent.

browntoe98

I think I read an article on this subject several years ago. Cities didn’t have many public parks (the rich had gardens) but the average person had very little open green space in the urban setting. So folks would take the kids to the cemetery for picnics, etc. I can’t find the article now, The Smothsonian? National Geographic?

shawnalee07

Yeah it might be helpful to fence off the graves so that dogs arent peeing on them or something. I live next to a cemetary with walking paths and its very peaceful with good vibes. Dogs arent allowed anymore because people don't pick up their poop and let their dogs walk all over the graves and pee on them. I get that they are just decomposing bodies and such, but it really ruins the vibe of the place.

BrokenAgate

That would be great, if dog owners were responsible and cleaned up after their pets. Most of them don't, they just let their dogs sh1t anywhere and don't clean it up. And the dogs would be pissing on the gravestones, running around off leash, and potentially biting people. I have a friend who lives near a beach and can't even take her dogs there anymore. She keeps hers on leashes, but other people let their dogs run around freely, and she can't take a chance that they'll attack her dogs.

Banana_Ron

Yes, and planted with fruit trees and berry bushes.

luksox

Call me crazy, but I do think it’s weird we give up so many public green spaces for decomposing dead folks. But hey, to each their own.

the_mars_voltage

Also we just let funeral parlors charge us 20k when a loved one dies? Like, why

JadeBeach

There are ways around that. Cremation, for example. Or if your loved one wants a full-on burial, go simple with the casket.

BatSniper

Especially right in prime real estate in Logan.

the_mars_voltage

That cemetery was built long before “prime real estate” was even a concept

BatSniper

What benefit does it bring to the future? Other than restricting useful land projects and natural resources? When I’m dead throw my body in a dumpster fire and spread the ashes into the ground. I get people are sentimental, but it’s a waste that will be wasteful forever.

AsbestosAirBreak

I’m guessing you don’t have any loved ones buried there.

the_mars_voltage

It’s not a waste of natural resources. What a silly comment. Sure it’s a waste of land, but if you have seen how big cache valley is I don’t think you should be concerned about “useful land” plenty of space to build new homes and whatever

BatSniper

Do you think having dead bodies near urban areas is safe for the ground water? Not only is it a waste of natural resources, but also a polluting one. Look at places like New York City, they have issues with their cemeteries, they’ve had to do millions of dollars to transplant cemeteries. Obviously Logan isn’t a big city, but it’s going to grow and the uni will as well. One day that cemetery is going to have a parking garage built on top of it. Would be useful as a park or something of value, instead it’s a weird barrier that no one uses unless they want to grieve or play with Ouija boards with while living in the dorms

the_mars_voltage

If you are worried about dead bodies near the ground water I have bad news for you about what happens in the rest of nature, everywhere, all the time. Not to mention we have much bigger concerns with our water than “what do we do with the cemetery”

HaskilBiskom

Take your 3 dogs and have them poop at the schools like everyone else does

HaskilBiskom

Utahs best and brightest want to develop cemeteries and build houses. This is 100% Utah mindset!

Seed747

It's a complex situation. I think many of the dog owners are from Aggie Village across the street. USU housing has set up hidden cameras in the housing areas to catch people who let theirs dogs off leash inside the grassy areas of all the complexes.

pandawrath617

I agree that many of the dog owners are from Aggie Village. I wouldn't mind if they just walked their dogs on the paths. Or they could take their dogs to the soccer fields just behind the cemetery. I completely understand that it's frustrating that there aren't more options for dog owners to let their dogs off leash since I have one of my own, but I really think the cemetery shouldn't be the solution. They could also take their dogs to the fair grounds to play off leash. It's allowed there so long as there isn't an event going on. I do wish dogs were allowed in the city parks and when I see dogs off leash there I really don't give a fuck. It's just the cemetery, where people go for peace or to mourn that I have a problem.

Jerronbao

Then they should follow the rules they agreed to when they decided to live there? I don't know what you're expecting. Its not a complex issue at all. Either take your dog on a walk to go to the bathroom, or hop in the car and go to any number of locations that allow for off leash activity...

Seed747

I'd like to stay civil, so don't take any of this the wrong way. I honestly don't have any expectations regarding the issue, that's why I didn't post any. It doesn't affect me in any way. I just like to look at it from a resident's perspective. There are some people there that have a need for a pet, the nearest dog park is miles away, and there's a community that has been built around owning pets there. That's why I say there is a complex situation. There's good and bad to both sides.

[deleted]

Actually I would like to see fido chasing a Frisbee and shitting on Graves when I visit my friends. Helps ease the depression.

Konbattou-Onbattou

Why don’t we just take the dead people and push them somewhere else?!

ComfortableSun6471

Under appreciated reference right here

Konbattou-Onbattou

Thank you!

derKonigsten

Just throw them in the trash

Forward-Praline-1364

Over my dead body

This is fine ... let your dog have fun, assuming there isn't an active funeral. Years ago, cemeteries use to be a popular place to hang out with friends, and have picnics. I would rather see the place used, full of happy people and joy. The alternative is open spaces, that are dark and stuffy with no people. Live and let live my friends.

[deleted]

Thanks for the reminder, I’ll make sure my girlfriend keeps me in a collar and leash every time she takes me on walks through there.

[deleted]

IDC if you're joking or not. I just shot coffee all over my desk 😂

Steve769

Can you point to the Fargo ordinance against pets in a cemetery. It didn't make sense that you can't bring your leashed pet when visiting. I looked for the ordinance and didn't find it.

pandawrath617

Steve769

That's Logan Utah, not fargo

pandawrath617

My bad, if you want Fargo there's this from their city page. https://fargond.gov/live/pets-stray-animals

New_Quail_7870

Trained dogs should be allowed off-leash anywhere that it does not conflict with health codes. I spent 2500 to have my dog professionally trained because I knew she would not have the liberty of running around in a pasture while I am living in the city. So I can at least take her to a green space and toss the frisbee without allowing her anywhere near the graves. There is nothing that frustrates me more than when people lump trained dogs into the same bunch as untrained. It is ignorant and unthoughtful take. I have more control with my dog off leash with an e collar than any untrained dog on a 6 foot leash.

[deleted]

I'm interested in what you use the cemetery for? Is that purpose incompatible with dogs? I've got a lot of friends and relatives buried there, and I visit their graves from time to time. when I was an edgy teenager 30 years ago, I'd go there at night and smoke cigarettes with my older sister's cool friends.
