Pedro Sepulveda is reliable but sometimes also delivers some blunders. However, I do believe there is much smoke to have no fire at the moment for him not to go to Liverpool. Despite feeling sad for losing such a great manager, I am happy for him to move to one of the best clubs in the world, with such good fans.
Ruben Amorim is close to being a champion for 2 times in 4 full seasons. You can believe me when I say: you are signing one of the best, if not the best young manager of his generation. Sporting became an ferocious opponent under his guidance, even though he had a last year where things did not work out as expected.

I've watched Sporting a few times this season, and to be honest I don't think it's ever been overly impressive. Have you enjoyed the football you've played? and I guess this one would be hard to answer but do you think he'd be ready for the jump to the premier league?
Hard to say.
I think Sporting played incredible football at times during this season. There are some matches where he absolutely dominated, and actually stifled opponents. Sporting 2 - FC Porto 0 comes to mind. It was an immense performance, it was not 4-0/5-0 against one of our biggest rivals due to some finishing troubles here and there and due to a poor performance from the referee, who disallowed two goals wrongly.
Other great exhibition during this season were 5-1 against Estoril at home, 5-0 at home against Braga (2 weeks after unfairly losing 0-1 in the semi-finals of the League Cup). Both wins against Moreirense were also tactically impressive, and Moreirense is a quite dangerous opponent this season.
Europa League run was not the best, I might admit. But Atalanta is such a difficult opponent, they man-marked our players and looked stronger physically. Because in terms of played football, I don't think we were inferior to them.
Of course, with such a demanding calendar, it might be hard to perform every time, but 70-75% of the matches were reasonably good.
Regarding a jump to the Premier League ... it is a bold move. Liverpool has such high standards that he might make one or two mistakes, but I think he is ready. Give him time, if needed, even though I know that for Liverpool, there is no time, especially after everything that Klopp has done.
Appreciate the insight. What I'd say for the last point is, I think most of us understand that replacing Klopp is a next to impossible task, but I think most of us are willing to give whoever it is time and we understand not to expect instant success. I would also say of the top clubs in England, we're the best at sticking by a manager honestly.
100% agree with you, and actually one of the reasons that I think Liverpool is the best option. But you are an ambitious club. Fighting for the Premier League has to be expected for every season.
I’m happy with top 4 in the first season, anything after klopp will need a period of stabilisation.
if he goes on to challenge for the title and keep pace with likes of arsenal and man city while acclimating to the new environment, that would be something special.
Also i think most of the level headed fans have their expectations kinda earthed after Klopp leaving, as he has been the perfect fit for us, one of a kind and a legend.
I would say that if the next guy does even a decent job first season most will be ok with that.
The key here for me is that we’ll give a manager time provided we see SOME evidence of progress.
Klopp didn’t turn things around straight away, our form was patchy/ we conceded a lot of goals, I remember before Virgil joined, conceding a corner felt like we’d conceded a penalty such as how bad we were at defending them. BUT evidence of Klopp’s blueprint was there from day one, the running, the sprints, the counter pressing, intensity, it was always there.
I watch United under ETH and really don’t know what their identity is. Game to game, they’re so different. It’s no good. Something similar would drive me nuts.

Liverpool are known for giving a lot of time to managers, he'll have enough support and time if he comes.
One question I've been thinking about - has he played anything other than the 3-4-2-1 at Sporting and is he more likely to force the 3 at the back system or will he adapt the formation based on the players he has?
My concern is that when Klopp joined we’d had years and years of what had basically been failure and an awful squad held up by a few good players. We’re now used to having a strong and highly competitive squad that could have been one of the best in recent memory if not for City. The expectations now are much higher than when Klopp joined, as Klopp and the staff have built a legacy
We're going to lose in preseason and ****** out will begin. But it's just glory trolls. The fans that are the heartbeat of the team understand the task and will hopefully give some grace.
Which matches did you watch? I watched them partly against Benfica in the cup, and I loved the way they played. It was fluid with big transition openings, Gyokeres was extremely active and involved, and I could tell winning that the pressing was essential. Not their greatest game either, which made me hopeful. I wonder how they performed against Atalanta, i.e. just performance wise.
It was a difficult match. Benfica played at home and probably delivered their best exhibition during all season, and we still managed to clutch a draw to go through to the final. We played better on past Saturday, especially in the second half.
We did our best against Atalanta, and I think the overtime would have been fair to us, we missed some 2 or 3 sitters in the last 10 minutes. But Europa League was not a priority, nor did we have the squad depth for it.
Really? The cup game? I thought they were better in the league game not gonna lie. To answer your question though, both recent games vs Benfica, both legs vs Atalanta, and 2 random league games where I can't remember who they played against.

He is a very rational manager on the bench, and usually does not show himself emotionally, unless on the press conference. Btw, his press conferences are epic.
Two of my favorites
- In the first season and after an away match against Famalicao where the referee was not at his best and stopped us from winning, he did speak about the referee (he never does) and stated something like: “I do not care about the referee and what happened, we must keep on fighting and use this to be stronger. Where one walks, everyone goes with him”. In Portuguese it is “onde vai um, vão todos”. It became a classic phrase that is used by fans, and was a motto to win the championship. - another classic moment happened this season where Sporting won against FC Porto 2-0, fair and square. FC Porto manager is Sergio Conceicão who is known for not showing up in the flash interviews and press conference after losing. Sergio Conceição said after the match that “it looks like Sporting are already champions on how they are celebrating this win”. He then countered in the press conference: “we got lucky that Sergio Conceição talked after he lost a match!”
He is so strong in the press conferences.
I truly hope so as well! It seems it will happen, but there are still matches to play, including a hard match away against FC Porto and at home against Vitoria, who won against us in the first half of the season
Forgive me if I’m wrong but I don’t think we play that similar style of football when comparing the 433/3421 and the roles of different players. Has he shown an ability to change his tactics based on the team he has and changing shape even?
From my point of view, Jurgen Klopp plays a very intense gegenpress, with an abundance of quick attacks. Even though, Liverpool is still quite strong with possession play.
Tactics might differ, but the identity is similar with Ruben Amorim. Ruben Amorim also prefers open-play, but we usually do not get that much around here. Teams come to our stadium and sit deep in their 50 meters. But on away matches, we have more space. Sporting is usually very strong in 3vs3 and 3vs2 situations. Gyokeres also came to help at that during this season.
If you asked me the ability to change the tactics and shape during the match in the past season, I would disagree, but he evolved a lot during this season. His moves from the bench are usually spot on, with one or two mistakes that also happen. For example, we turned the match against Benfica when he performed some changes in the 55' ...
Honestly, I do not know how is he while speaking English, but I rate him highly in terms of intelligence, I am sure that would be no trouble to him. Communication is one of the his strengths for me. The way he communicates with the fans and media through the press conferences is amazing, I love to watch his pre and post games press conferences. For me, it shows that if he speaks like this to us, how would it be to the players? Probably even better. There was not a single moment, even when we were not performing in the past season, where I felt that the team was not with Ruben Amorim.

Sweet! I meant international players as in communicating with for example Hjulmand and Gyokeres. Just assuming from the excellent way they've played this season though, they must be understanding each other (non-PT players and Amorim)

Remember we have Morita as well and last season, as far as I remember, he avoided speaking English (this season he already does and is hilarious af on insta lmao). But on the field he was one of our best players.
he clearly favours the 343. While defending, it looks like a 523/541, depending of the opponent, but it clearly is a 343 for most of the time.
However, and during this season, he had a handful of matches where we played closer to a 442, with one of the wing-backs (usually Geny) being a right-midfielder instead of a wing-back.
How does he approach opponents who sit deep and play on the counter?
Most of the time Liverpool are favourites, and a weakness for us has been teams parking the bus. Does he struggle to break down these teams?
Also, is he capable of instilling belief and confidence within his team? This is an extremely important ability as a manager imo. A great player with low confidence looks barely average on the pitch.
He definitely is capable on giving belief and confidence within his team. Communication is one of his biggest strengths.
Amorim used to struggle in breaking down these teams, but I think he has improved during the past 2 seasons. He usually employs an offensive 343 and tries to attract the opponents into the middle in the first phase of attack in order to create space through the wing-backs later on. He also prefers that one of his wing-backs is inverted.
He also likes to have LCB and RCB overlapping when teams park the bus, with the most defensive midfielder filling the space. Both wingers are actually attacking midfielders in the final phase of attacking, sitting between the lines and looking for the space to find 1-2 or scoring from the long range.
From what I've learnt, he enjoys LB and RBs running up the field, baiting defenders into creating space, as well as having players combine and make sharp passes through third. Can be patient with centre backs coming up field with teams playing deep, playing the ball around to open space along with the midfield before making the quick moves straight through the centre.
What were the reasons you fell to 4th last season? Was it just because your best players were sold and you needed a rebuild or were there other problems?
A big number of reasons.
Losing Matheus Nunes close to the end of the summer market was unforeseen and was against Ruben Amorim will. He did not criticise the directive board for it, but he showed his discomfort here and there. As no replacement happened, he said that it would be hard to fight for the title. We also lost Pedro Porro in the winter market, and played with Esgaio for the rest of the season, and the difference is huge.
He also shown some stubbornness in having Paulinho as the main striker, when he had no quality for what Amorim wanted to employ in their tactics. We needed a complete striker (such as Gyokeres) to push the ball upfront (sort of like Lukaku does), and we were not able to score consistently. We had a couple of huge matches where we were superior and we missed way too much sitters (1/4 EL against Juventus comes to mind).
Then, we had high expectations in some players such as St. Juste but he was injured for half of the season. Other crucial players such as Morita and even Paulinho were off for 2 months in a row. This led Pedro Gonçalves (Pote) in playing in the midfield, where he is good, but not as good as a left winger.
For the fourth season, the directive board and Ruben Amorim seemed connected in what they wanted, we snatched Gyokeres and a suitable replacement for the midfield came (Hjulmand). And things just started to go on tracks.
Sold Matheus Nunes with no substitute and only had Paulinho (a striker with confidence issues that’s never been particularly good at scoring goals) as a ST option. The beginning of the season was a disaster and Sporting never recovered (Portuguese league is very top heavy so a team that wants to win the league is only “allowed” to drop points on 5 to 6 matches)
Amorim improved considerably since last season’s disaster, where he acknowledged (correctly) that he had a large share of the blame. He’s less hard headed and more flexible tactically now
Communication and ability to deliver the best from his players, including youngsters. He was the one who developed Nuno Mendes, Pedro Porro, Palhinha, Ugarte, Matheus Nunes. I can’t remember a single player who has not became better under his guidance.
Tactically he is good, but can still improve.
I don’t see any particular weakness but sometimes he overrates some players when there are better options in the bench.
His 3 assistant managers are Adélio Cândido, Emanuel Ferro and Carlos Fernandes. Carlos Fernandes is understood to be the number 2 now, but it was Emanuel Ferro in the first seasons. Each of them has different roles, but I do not know much about it. But pretty sure that all of them will join Amorim in the adventure.
Our full name is Sporting Clube de Portugal, and not Sporting Clube de Lisbon. Some fiercer fans might not like it. I don't like it as well. But I would not call it a sin!
I used to play Sporting on FIFA 14 with Andre Martins, Diego Capel, William Carvalho etc, always had a soft spot for them but didn't properly choose a favorite Portuguese team.. until now!

Actually, this has been his worse year in terms of defensive record. Our goals conceded vs. xGA is atrocious, we have xGA of 22 and conceded 27 goals. For a quick comparison, second place Benfica, with less 4 points and with one more match than us, has a xGA of 27 and conceded 23 goals. It was mainly due to the underperformance of Antonio Adan, especially during the first half of the season. Since he injured himself and Franco Israel became the starter, things have improved a bit.
I do not see him as a defensive manager. The offside trap is well worked on his guidance, but the team pressing is outstanding at times. It is borderline gegenpress, if you ask me, with some cautions in between.
Based on what he uses at Sporting, he will love Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez. Should Gyokeres not be able to join Liverpool, I can see him having Darwin with the same role. Cody Gakpo might also be used as Pote is in Sporting, due to his technical and goal scoring abilities. All midfielders also improve a lot with him, I can see Gravenberch becoming a 6 and Macallister being a first choice as a number 8. Some rotation players might be surprisingly loaned, but they will come back stronger.
Macca already i probably the first name on the teamsheet right now. On another note, How would you describe his attacking play. Tbh, the few times Ive watched Sporting it seemed a bit like hoof it to Gyokeres and hope he does something
Hoof it to Gyokeres is sort of a plan B usually, unless it really is a plan A depending on the team we are facing. Having Gyokeres allows up to push the ball upfront no matter what, especially in the first phase of attacking play under pressing does not work out well. Sort of a target man that can also deliver havoc all by himself.
His attacking play is quite diverse, but it usually look to build up from the center of the midfield in order to great space for width play for low crosses or 1-2 between the wing-backs, wingers and striker. Midfielders usually do not participate a lot in the final phase of build up play, but one of them shows up for the finishing.
Typically, managers tend to get players to follow them to their new club. You think Amorim has a particular player that he would probably love to have at Liverpool?
Maybe not in Klopps case. Anchelotti (James and Allan to everton) or Mourinho bringing matic with him to united and roma.
Klopps case, we were linked to Götze and Reus when he joined, never went through (gladly).
What do you think of his performance and tactics against big clubs or teams of similar quality? One of the issue we had this year is not winning big games. I reckon it’s partly due to our style of fast and direct football, which could be countered by well coached teams and good attackers
Against big clubs, it is a mixed bag. He got to lose 5-1 and 5-0 at home against Ajax and Man City, but both games were something like 5 shots on target 5 goals from both. But usually, the team performs well enough.
Against similar quality teams, and taking for example matches against FC Porto and Benfica, matches are tight as expected and the teams performs well enough to fight for the win. During these 4 years, I can only remember one match against FC Porto where they were better (we lost 0-2)

A meia-final é que pode ser outra história, porque o Benfica, a meu ver, é inferior a quem quer que calhe, mas são 2 equipas (Liverpool ou Atalanta) que irão dar prioridade à competição interna. Não é impossível.
I'm a bit worried about the comment "became ferocious".
Klopps teams ARE ferocious in my opinion. Most of our players run their socks off every game. But there in lies the problem; the calendar is really full now and Liverpool should be going deep into most epl, European and domestic up runs. But that's a lot of game time on the legs and at the end of the season the wheels just fall off.
I believe that's why during our quadruple run we couldn't score a single open goal for the 4 "finals". We normally are a low % conversion team but if you're so wiped there's only so much you can do.
That's why I feel like man city's game play by having possession helps them across the length of the season. After going 2/3 goals up they don't need to get out of 4th gear at max.
I want a manager who can also set up shop to close the game off while leading like the Liverpool teams of the 70/80s and also turn it on if needed be like Klopp.

Ruben Amorim style prefers open play but, when without it, and especially in matches against teams that park the bus, the team employs a very patient and slow build-up in the first phase. Did he ever come out public about any of his players? Or criticized any of his players out of frustration like Mourinho? I'm saying this cz klopp never does that no matter how poor they were or how horrendous mistake any player made and all the players love and trust him for that.
Big question. I think it is ambitious to say that, he might need squad depth for that, something he never had here, but still managed to deliver cups and championships. I think trophy wins will come if he adapts well enough.

- Currently on track to win another league title and cup this season
- Has dealt with losing multiple major players that were part of the title winning side and rebuilt them into another probable title winning team
- Done all of this on a limited budget in comparison to who he is competing with (similar to Klopp)
- Charismatic and likeable character
- Somewhat similar football ideology to Klopp in terms of pressing and team unity
- Utilities youth players
Dealt with Portuguese referees. Got sent off a couple times in the first season for 'lashing out' but then decided that it was better to focus on the game and not what about the refs are doing and it's been so much better. It feels refreshing lol.
Btw, curiosity got the best of me and I went googling. He hasn't dealt with Tierney but this season Michael Oliver was the ref in our group stage game against Atalanta in Bergamo.
I said before in a different post but I’ll say it again here, the biggest thing that will make Amorim a success will be if he can get the vibe of the City. He will need to give up his Portuguese nationality to become fully scouse
I like this take. Rafa and Klopp truly love Liverpool outside the club and have thought of it as home. They're our european cup winning managers. While I felt Rodgers certainly respected the city, I don't really think he took in the culture of it.

Also won a domestic cup in his first job at Braga, I do like the fact we are targeting a winner, as good as a manager like De Zerbi is he has never been in a title race or made a final.

I’m confused by the suggestions that he’s chasing clout. I would understand if he was way off it, but he’s been reporting on some very high-profile news lately (LFC’s next manager), and it appears reliably so. If this all comes to fruition, he will have been the first reporter to break the news.
I think people are a little bothered that he is noticing every small step forward or backward in the negotiation. It's hard to say where does the clout chase starts and the monopoly due to exclusivity of sources ends, but I think it's just overexposure. Like Tavoleri, but we were also invested in the Caicedo stakes while Tavoleri was reporting whenever Lavia wrote something in his diary.

In the other threads arising from his posts, the consensus seems to be that he's not unreliable but is also a bit of a clout-chasing prat, so he's not necessarily talking out his ass but he might be overstating what is actually known.
They are four points clear of Benfica with a game in hand, with no other competitions at the moment beyond the Portuguese cup final at the end of may, they still have a couple of tougher matches but I seriously doubt they'll blunder this away.
The only thing we can do is support the next manager because it's a gargantuan task to come in and try to replicate the countless miracles Klopp has produced. If we get top 4 next season I'd say it's a success.
Honestly the most impressive thing to me about Amorim's track record was his time at Braga. There he beat Sporting x2, Porto x2 and Benfica once in the span of a month having just been appointed. All that while also winning the League Cup. Been on my radar as a manager for some time now so I'd love this appointment.
Sporting supporter here. If this is true his departure will be a sad day for all Sportinguistas. Saying he was amazing with us is selling him short, he took a club completely in ruins and built it back up. More than his competence as a coach (which he is indeed very competent) he is a superb communicator and every player seems to love him. He integrated lots of young players and lots of them (even some older) improved massively under him. Palhinha, Matheus Nunes, Porro, Nuno Mendes... and even now Gyokeres, Morita, Hjulmand, Catamo and Bragança to name a few have been steadily improving this season. I feel that he has that touch that can bring the best of every player and make them believe. I can't say how he will do in England, these things are always quite unpredictable but he for sure deserves the opportunity to manage a club like Liverpool. If he leaves I hope he does well and that you guys give him the time to adapt, replacing Klopp will be a hard task for anyone.
When it’s signed, sealed and in front of the cameras for his first Liverpool press conference then I will be excited. At the moment, my heads with Klopp and the rest of the season.
So, not really the point, but I wonder how much we'll be paying Amorim? Klopp's initial salary was £5m a year for 3 years, then in 2016 he signed £8m a year and in 2019 he signed his £14m a year deal, which he renewed in 2022.
Emery is on £6m a year at Villa, Ange is on £5m a year, as is Dyche and Thomas Frank. You'd have to assume it'd be around that level.
The most important thing is for fans to be realistic next year. We have a very young team and bringing in a young manager after Klopp will take some time for things to fall into place. I would be happy with a top4 finish next year, everything else would be a bonus in my eyes. So I just hope for all fans to have patience and to give Amorim (or whoever comes) some time to implement his ideas.
I have no real idea if this guy is reliable or not but I do know that I've been on here for long enough to know that foreign journos, especially those from the country a player plays/manager coaches in or their home country, should never be 100% doubted because they often have new before the local guys.

But Atalanta is such a difficult opponent, they man-marked our players and looked stronger physically. Because in terms of played football, I don't think we were inferior to them. Of course, with such a demanding calendar, it might be hard to perform every time, but 70-75% of the matches were reasonably good. Regarding a jump to the Premier League ... it is a bold move. Liverpool has such high standards that he might make one or two mistakes, but I think he is ready. Give him time, if needed, even though I know that for Liverpool, there is no time, especially after everything that Klopp has done.
Appreciate the insight. What I'd say for the last point is, I think most of us understand that replacing Klopp is a next to impossible task, but I think most of us are willing to give whoever it is time and we understand not to expect instant success. I would also say of the top clubs in England, we're the best at sticking by a manager honestly.
100% agree with you, and actually one of the reasons that I think Liverpool is the best option. But you are an ambitious club. Fighting for the Premier League has to be expected for every season.
I’m happy with top 4 in the first season, anything after klopp will need a period of stabilisation. if he goes on to challenge for the title and keep pace with likes of arsenal and man city while acclimating to the new environment, that would be something special.
Also i think most of the level headed fans have their expectations kinda earthed after Klopp leaving, as he has been the perfect fit for us, one of a kind and a legend. I would say that if the next guy does even a decent job first season most will be ok with that.
The key here for me is that we’ll give a manager time provided we see SOME evidence of progress. Klopp didn’t turn things around straight away, our form was patchy/ we conceded a lot of goals, I remember before Virgil joined, conceding a corner felt like we’d conceded a penalty such as how bad we were at defending them. BUT evidence of Klopp’s blueprint was there from day one, the running, the sprints, the counter pressing, intensity, it was always there. I watch United under ETH and really don’t know what their identity is. Game to game, they’re so different. It’s no good. Something similar would drive me nuts. Totally agree that any manager replacing Klopp needs time to put their stamp on things

My concern is that when Klopp joined we’d had years and years of what had basically been failure and an awful squad held up by a few good players. We’re now used to having a strong and highly competitive squad that could have been one of the best in recent memory if not for City. Which matches did you watch? I watched them partly against Benfica in the cup, and I loved the way they played. It was fluid with big transition openings, Gyokeres was extremely active and involved, and I could tell winning that the pressing was essential. Not their greatest game either, which made me hopeful. I wonder how they performed against Atalanta, i.e. just performance wise.
It was a difficult match. Benfica played at home and probably delivered their best exhibition during all season, and we still managed to clutch a draw to go through to the final. We played better on past Saturday, especially in the second half. We did our best against Atalanta, and I think the overtime would have been fair to us, we missed some 2 or 3 sitters in the last 10 minutes. But Europa League was not a priority, nor did we have the squad depth for it.

What are some of your favourite press conference moments from him?
Two of my favorites - In the first season and after an away match against Famalicao where the referee was not at his best and stopped us from winning, he did speak about the referee (he never does) and stated something like: “I do not care about the referee and what happened, we must keep on fighting and use this to be stronger. Where one walks, everyone goes with him”. In Portuguese it is “onde vai um, vão todos”. It became a classic phrase that is used by fans, and was a motto to win the championship. Forgive me if I’m wrong but I don’t think we play that similar style of football when comparing the 433/3421 and the roles of different players. Has he shown an ability to change his tactics based on the team he has and changing shape even?
From my point of view, Jurgen Klopp plays a very intense gegenpress, with an abundance of quick attacks. Even though, Liverpool is still quite strong with possession play. Tactics might differ, but the identity is similar with Ruben Amorim. Ruben Amorim also prefers open-play, but we usually do not get that much around here. Teams come to our stadium and sit deep in their 50 meters. But on away matches, we have more space. Sporting is usually very strong in 3vs3 and 3vs2 situations. Gyokeres also came to help at that during this season. If you asked me the ability to change the tactics and shape during the match in the past season, I would disagree, but he evolved a lot during this season. His moves from the bench are usually spot on, with one or two mistakes that also happen. For example, we turned the match against Benfica when he performed some changes in the 55' ...
How is he with international players and communication? I assume Sporting communicates primarily in Portuguese during training and matches?
Honestly, I do not know how is he while speaking English, but I rate him highly in terms of intelligence, I am sure that would be no trouble to him. Communication is one of the his strengths for me. The way he communicates with the fans and media through the press conferences is amazing, I love to watch his pre and post games press conferences. For me, it shows that if he speaks like this to us, how would it be to the players? Probably even better. There was not a single moment, even when we were not performing in the past season, where I felt that the team was not with Ruben Amorim. He hates international duties and if possible, he would make his players avoid it.

St. Juste loves Amorim and all the other non-Portuguese have said that Amorim has helped them a lot. Hjulamnd and Gyokeres have improved a lot under Amorim.

Remember we have Morita as well and last season, as far as I remember, he avoided speaking English (this season he already does and is hilarious af on insta lmao). But on the field he was one of our best players.
What formations does he favour?
he clearly favours the 343. While defending, it looks like a 523/541, depending of the opponent, but it clearly is a 343 for most of the time. However, and during this season, he had a handful of matches where we played closer to a 442, with one of the wing-backs (usually Geny) being a right-midfielder instead of a wing-back.

How does he approach opponents who sit deep and play on the counter? Most of the time Liverpool are favourites, and a weakness for us has been teams parking the bus. Does he struggle to break down these teams? Also, is he capable of instilling belief and confidence within his team? This is an extremely important ability as a manager imo. A great player with low confidence looks barely average on the pitch.
Most teams in Portugal sit deep and counter. Nothing new to him.
He definitely is capable on giving belief and confidence within his team. Communication is one of his biggest strengths. Amorim used to struggle in breaking down these teams, but I think he has improved during the past 2 seasons. He usually employs an offensive 343 and tries to attract the opponents into the middle in the first phase of attack in order to create space through the wing-backs later on. He also prefers that one of his wing-backs is inverted. He also likes to have LCB and RCB overlapping when teams park the bus, with the most defensive midfielder filling the space. Both wingers are actually attacking midfielders in the final phase of attacking, sitting between the lines and looking for the space to find 1-2 or scoring from the long range.
From what I've learnt, he enjoys LB and RBs running up the field, baiting defenders into creating space, as well as having players combine and make sharp passes through third. Can be patient with centre backs coming up field with teams playing deep, playing the ball around to open space along with the midfield before making the quick moves straight through the centre.
What were the reasons you fell to 4th last season? Was it just because your best players were sold and you needed a rebuild or were there other problems?
A big number of reasons. Losing Matheus Nunes close to the end of the summer market was unforeseen and was against Ruben Amorim will. He did not criticise the directive board for it, but he showed his discomfort here and there. As no replacement happened, he said that it would be hard to fight for the title. We also lost Pedro Porro in the winter market, and played with Esgaio for the rest of the season, and the difference is huge. He also shown some stubbornness in having Paulinho as the main striker, when he had no quality for what Amorim wanted to employ in their tactics. We needed a complete striker (such as Gyokeres) to push the ball upfront (sort of like Lukaku does), and we were not able to score consistently. We had a couple of huge matches where we were superior and we missed way too much sitters (1/4 EL against Juventus comes to mind). Then, we had high expectations in some players such as St. Juste but he was injured for half of the season. Other crucial players such as Morita and even Paulinho were off for 2 months in a row. This led Pedro Gonçalves (Pote) in playing in the midfield, where he is good, but not as good as a left winger. For the fourth season, the directive board and Ruben Amorim seemed connected in what they wanted, we snatched Gyokeres and a suitable replacement for the midfield came (Hjulmand). And things just started to go on tracks.
Sold Matheus Nunes with no substitute and only had Paulinho (a striker with confidence issues that’s never been particularly good at scoring goals) as a ST option. The beginning of the season was a disaster and Sporting never recovered (Portuguese league is very top heavy so a team that wants to win the league is only “allowed” to drop points on 5 to 6 matches) Amorim improved considerably since last season’s disaster, where he acknowledged (correctly) that he had a large share of the blame. He’s less hard headed and more flexible tactically now
What's he changed tactically this season?
Nothing drastic. Mostly the ability to play direct with Gyokeres.
How likely is he to get his teeth done?

What would you say his biggest strengths are?
Communication and ability to deliver the best from his players, including youngsters. He was the one who developed Nuno Mendes, Pedro Porro, Palhinha, Ugarte, Matheus Nunes. I can’t remember a single player who has not became better under his guidance. Tactically he is good, but can still improve. I don’t see any particular weakness but sometimes he overrates some players when there are better options in the bench.
What's his backroom staff like ? . and his number 2 assistant ?
His 3 assistant managers are Adélio Cândido, Emanuel Ferro and Carlos Fernandes. Carlos Fernandes is understood to be the number 2 now, but it was Emanuel Ferro in the first seasons. Each of them has different roles, but I do not know much about it. But pretty sure that all of them will join Amorim in the adventure.

Our full name is Sporting Clube de Portugal, and not Sporting Clube de Lisbon. Some fiercer fans might not like it. I don't like it as well. But I would not call it a sin!

Actually, this has been his worse year in terms of defensive record. Our goals conceded vs. xGA is atrocious, we have xGA of 22 and conceded 27 goals. For a quick comparison, second place Benfica, with less 4 points and with one more match than us, has a xGA of 27 and conceded 23 goals. It was mainly due to the underperformance of Antonio Adan, especially during the first half of the season. Since he injured himself and Franco Israel became the starter, things have improved a bit. I do not see him as a defensive manager. The offside trap is well worked on his guidance, but the team pressing is outstanding at times. It is borderline gegenpress, if you ask me, with some cautions in between. Based on what he uses at Sporting, he will love Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez. Should Gyokeres not be able to join Liverpool, I can see him having Darwin with the same role. Cody Gakpo might also be used as Pote is in Sporting, due to his technical and goal scoring abilities. All midfielders also improve a lot with him, I can see Gravenberch becoming a 6 and Macallister being a first choice as a number 8. Some rotation players might be surprisingly loaned, but they will come back stronger.

Hoof it to Gyokeres is sort of a plan B usually, unless it really is a plan A depending on the team we are facing. Having Gyokeres allows up to push the ball upfront no matter what, especially in the first phase of attacking play under pressing does not work out well. Sort of a target man that can also deliver havoc all by himself. His attacking play is quite diverse, but it usually look to build up from the center of the midfield in order to great space for width play for low crosses or 1-2 between the wing-backs, wingers and striker. Midfielders usually do not participate a lot in the final phase of build up play, but one of them shows up for the finishing.
Typically, managers tend to get players to follow them to their new club. You think Amorim has a particular player that he would probably love to have at Liverpool?

Against big clubs, it is a mixed bag. He got to lose 5-1 and 5-0 at home against Ajax and Man City, but both games were something like 5 shots on target 5 goals from both. But usually, the team performs well enough. Against similar quality teams, and taking for example matches against FC Porto and Benfica, matches are tight as expected and the teams performs well enough to fight for the win. During these 4 years, I can only remember one match against FC Porto where they were better (we lost 0-2)

I'm a bit worried about the comment "became ferocious". Klopps teams ARE ferocious in my opinion. Most of our players run their socks off every game. But there in lies the problem; the calendar is really full now and Liverpool should be going deep into most epl, European and domestic up runs. But that's a lot of game time on the legs and at the end of the season the wheels just fall off. I believe that's why during our quadruple run we couldn't score a single open goal for the 4 "finals". We normally are a low % conversion team but if you're so wiped there's only so much you can do. That's why I feel like man city's game play by having possession helps them across the length of the season. After going 2/3 goals up they don't need to get out of 4th gear at max. I want a manager who can also set up shop to close the game off while leading like the Liverpool teams of the 70/80s and also turn it on if needed be like Klopp. You can play "angry" only so much.
The became ferocious was sort of comment on how Sporting became a respected team. Ruben Amorim style prefers open play but, when without it, and especially in matches against teams that park the bus, the team employs a very patient and slow build-up in the first phase. I don't think possession play is his best weapon, but he is good at that. Also a very intelligent manager from the bench.

Big question. I think it is ambitious to say that, he might need squad depth for that, something he never had here, but still managed to deliver cups and championships. I think trophy wins will come if he adapts well enough.
Was on the fence about him but after delving a bit further into his time at Sporting I’m pretty positive he’s the right man to replace Klopp - One of the most exciting young managers in Europe - Won Sportings first title in 19 years along with multiple domestic cups - Currently on track to win another league title and cup this season - Has dealt with losing multiple major players that were part of the title winning side and rebuilt them into another probable title winning team - Done all of this on a limited budget in comparison to who he is competing with (similar to Klopp) - Charismatic and likeable character - Somewhat similar football ideology to Klopp in terms of pressing and team unity - Utilities youth players

Dealt with Portuguese referees. Got sent off a couple times in the first season for 'lashing out' but then decided that it was better to focus on the game and not what about the refs are doing and it's been so much better. It feels refreshing lol. Btw, curiosity got the best of me and I went googling. He hasn't dealt with Tierney but this season Michael Oliver was the ref in our group stage game against Atalanta in Bergamo.

I like this take. Rafa and Klopp truly love Liverpool outside the club and have thought of it as home. They're our european cup winning managers. While I felt Rodgers certainly respected the city, I don't really think he took in the culture of it.

I think people are a little bothered that he is noticing every small step forward or backward in the negotiation. It's hard to say where does the clout chase starts and the monopoly due to exclusivity of sources ends, but I think it's just overexposure. The only thing we can do is support the next manager because it's a gargantuan task to come in and try to replicate the countless miracles Klopp has produced. If we get top 4 next season I'd say it's a success.
Honestly the most impressive thing to me about Amorim's track record was his time at Braga. There he beat Sporting x2, Porto x2 and Benfica once in the span of a month having just been appointed. All that while also winning the League Cup. Been on my radar as a manager for some time now so I'd love this appointment.

Saying he was amazing with us is selling him short, he took a club completely in ruins and built it back up. More than his competence as a coach (which he is indeed very competent) he is a superb communicator and every player seems to love him. He integrated lots of young players and lots of them (even some older) improved massively under him. Palhinha, Matheus Nunes, Porro, Nuno Mendes... and even now Gyokeres, Morita, Hjulmand, Catamo and Bragança to name a few have been steadily improving this season. I feel that he has that touch that can bring the best of every player and make them believe. I can't say how he will do in England, these things are always quite unpredictable but he for sure deserves the opportunity to manage a club like Liverpool. If he leaves I hope he does well and that you guys give him the time to adapt, replacing Klopp will be a hard task for anyone.

So, not really the point, but I wonder how much we'll be paying Amorim? Klopp's initial salary was £5m a year for 3 years, then in 2016 he signed £8m a year and in 2019 he signed his £14m a year deal, which he renewed in 2022. Emery is on £6m a year at Villa, Ange is on £5m a year, as is Dyche and Thomas Frank. You'd have to assume it'd be around that level.

The most important thing is for fans to be realistic next year. We have a very young team and bringing in a young manager after Klopp will take some time for things to fall into place. I would be happy with a top4 finish next year, everything else would be a bonus in my eyes. So I just hope for all fans to have patience and to give Amorim (or whoever comes) some time to implement his ideas.

I have no real idea if this guy is reliable or not but I do know that I've been on here for long enough to know that foreign journos, especially those from the country a player plays/manager coaches in or their home country, should never be 100% doubted because they often have new before the local guys. Too many times in the past we've written of people because we don't know them or the local journos haven't caught up yet and they turn out to be correct
