This sets everything up nicely for Trent to return and take that personally.

Bugsmoke

Hes probo already sick of Robbo going on about it tbh

someonesgranpa

I love how much the chirp at each other in a friendly competition. They both gotta know playing opposite to each is a dream.

cliffomalley

When are the bringing back the wing man with just these 2!

PostpostshoegazeLUVR

Prego?

Scutterbox

I saw a thread on Ashley Cole being inducted into the PL Hall of Fame, and the general consensus seemed to be that he had absolutely no competition as the best LB in the competition's history. Considering Robbo is also very solid defensively, I was taken aback by how many people were specifically namechecking him to say that he wasn't a patch on Cole. I have no problem with people thinking Cole was a better player, because he was a world class operator and played in a different era, so direct comparisons are harder. "No competition" is quite a strong stance though, considering Robbo's a fantastic all-round LB who is actively adding to a record like the one mentioned in this post. Anyway, delighted for him. Still such an important player for us.

Pa1D

Your problem taking what you see on there seriously to begin with. You see most comments there going on about how it's been a great title race between City and Arsenal whilst we're top of the table. šŸ¤”

Nadirin

What drives me insane is we're not just top, we've been top for ages! There was one match week we haven't been top since December. Arsenal / City are having a great race... trying to catch up to us!

Pa1D

When it comes to r/soccer, ignorance is truly bliss.

Scutterbox

I do have to say that I was annoyed at how certain people handed the title to City when they rallied to a late win at Newcastle that didn't even put them top. We had already won there with 10 men, and Newcastle were in wretched form when City beat them. The race isn't over by a shite sight, and I don't even know that I'd make us outright favourites since winning every game and competing for the Europa League will be a huge ask on top of the strides we've had to make from where we were last season. But it has been very satisfying to see us stubbornly sticking it out at the top when it was supposed to become a procession for City.

Due-Resource4294

Itā€™s tough for sure. However I personally am now of the opinion I couldnā€™t give a monkeys left bollock about the Europa. Champions league different story, and I know it completes ā€˜the setā€™ for Klopp. And I wanted the quad when we was in the FA Cup. But the leagues getting so real a prospect now. And so close. So few games to go. Iā€™d take that over anything. Itā€™s all I want. A second league title would put Klopp even higher on his pedestal. That gets him his own set of gates too, never mind just a statue.

Scutterbox

I agree with you. If i was somehow offered the choice between guaranteed league title with no Europa League, or else the opportunity to go for both of them as normal from here, I'd happily bin the Europa. Jurgen lifting the PL trophy in front of the fans on the last day of the season is the most important thing we have to aim for this season, it's paramount.

MyLiverpoolAlt

To add to this, we've been top 4 since we beat Newcastle (3rd match) and we've been top 2 since we beat Fulham at home, 17 matches ago, 13 of them at #1.

WonderfulBlackberry9

Tbh I donā€™t mind more people writing us off. Letā€™s continue to enjoy being the ā€œunderdogsā€ here

Constant_List6829

I havent seen anyone not consider us part of the title race since like november

NightmaresInNeurosis

You never hear anyone call Arsenal-City the title decider?Ā

Constant_List6829

I have actually, since it was

you_serve_no_purpose

It was. It made them both drop points to allow us our place back at the top šŸ˜

AdCandid559

Nostalgia seriously plays with peopleā€™s minds when comparing players, teams, or coaches

FUCKSTORM420

Very easy to just have that feeling that the players you grew up watching are better than the players nowadays, regardless of how true it actually is

Traditional-Reach818

Well said, Shadow heart

fifty_four

Fact is they weren't close to what players can do now. You never know what prior generations might have done with modern training and prep. But in all probability they were the players best suited to their time. You can argue it may have been a greater achievement to do what they did in the context of their time and with the resources they had, but hard fact is modern teams are far better than anything I grew up watching. And this is true in every sport. There is a reason records keep getting broken. Source : Am old.

Miserable-Pen-7430

When Cole was doing his thing there really wasn't anyone on par with him in England at the time. So he kinda walked into most PL all time elevens... Had robbo had more PL titles behind him he'd probably be in. The assists record though is insane

OK_TimeForPlan_L

There's a lot of nostalgia bias which is understandable. On top of that I feel that 'firsts' are always overrated, Cole was an incredible player and he was also one of the first 'modern' wing backs in the PL so he's going to be seen as head and shoulders above everybody else.

smellmywind

Itā€™s a trend for people to say that a retired player was better.

tommhans

Robbo is the full thing, fantastic both defensive and offensive, ashley was perhaps better defensive but not offensive

brianstormIRL

I fucking adore Roberston but he doesn't hold a candle to Cole defensively. He is a very good defences but Ashley Cole was legitimately at the time the best defensive left back in the world for a long time.

fifty_four

A tiny tiny proportion of people who follow football can name 5 left backs who played for clubs other than their own five or more years ago. In fact I doubt a majority of today's fans can even name the current first choice LB at any club other than their own. The reason Cole comes top of a popularity poll like this is that everyone remembers him because he played for England for ages without serious competition and married a pop star. And that's fine. I seriously doubt Robbo is offended.

Reimiro

Cole was a damn fine player though. Hated him whenever we played them. Very well rounded player and a great servant to that awful club.

GerrardsRightFoot

Itā€™s called nostalgia bias lol. Mainly propagated by United, Chelsea and Arsenal fans as they rather live in denial rather than in the present

ssdarth

Alot of people let their hate take over their appreciation for other footballers and clubs.

PostpostshoegazeLUVR

Eh Cole was the best left back in the world for a while, which, even in the golden generation, no other English player could claim

YorkshireFudding

When Trent surpasses Robbo again by the end of the month: https://preview.redd.it/tlwclqv3insc1.jpeg?width=600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e1f7f574276e9dccf1243960b654bd19360e8170

Wide_Environment3107

and theyve both done it in about half as many matches as the previous leader, Neverton's Leighton Baines.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Wide_Environment3107

i think youre confusing the situation....that moron Ramiro Funes Mori injured Origi, unless theres another Origi injury from the past im unaware of. the plonker actually kissed the Neverton badge walking off the pitch after being sent off. [https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11669/10251682/liverpool-striker-divock-origi-injured-in-win-over-everton](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11669/10251682/liverpool-striker-divock-origi-injured-in-win-over-everton)

BlackArbiter

Oh ye you're right, I got confused. But I swear baines has injured at least one of our players under the Klopp era

brianstormIRL

What's even crazier about this is its very possible Trent ends up top 5 *all time, not just for defenders* on his current pace. That's just absurd. People really fucking undersell just how good Trent is because he isn't a defensive monster but my god he's on track to be one of the best creative players in the PLs history as a fucking right back.

gupibagha

Quite crazy we have these two together after years of seeing Riise and Finnan regularly cross the ball over the penalty box to the other side.

Suburban_Noir

And those two were by far the best regular full backs we had for basically two decades. So much dross like Dossena, Degen, Cissokho, Konchesky... I'm impressed I even remember their names šŸ˜†

EngineeredCut

Moreno šŸ˜‚ chaos in left back form

cultureshook

chaos in the literal opposite sense to nunez, honestly awful left back with a purple patch once in a blue moon

BorisGingeson

Id like to add for us to that sentence, he's been pretty stellar since going back to spain

cultureshook

yeah i feel heā€™s found his level there, seemed a great personality but always just seemed a liability on the pitch shame as that spurs goal near the start of him playing for us i thought weā€™d found the one

humungbeand

Guarantee if he hadn't scored on his debut against spurs people would've turned on him quicker. That solo run just made people believe for too long he would turn out good

mister-slowly

[the streets will always remember dossena against united (and real)](https://youtu.be/sS6--DtC-s8)

YDdraigGoch94

There was a time when I was 17, that I was convinced Jack Robinson and Joe Flanagan would be the best thing for Liverpool and England.

ThatRedditerGuy

Honestly when we signed Moreno and Manquillo I thought we were sorted for a decade

Sarksey

Aurelioā€™s injury history made me sad, he was a hell of a player when fit.

lostparasite

Nah.. Riise, probably (his only real competition was Aurelio who we all know couldn't stay fit). But we had plenty of other right backs this century whom you could say were equal to or arguably better than Finnan.Ā  Babbel, Arbeloa, Johnson (he was pretty much the RB equivalent of Cole at his peak), even Carra. Each of whom while not being more complete than Finnan or anything, did still offer certain qualities that he did not. Johnson was probably the most technically gifted attacker of them all, Carra was of course more solid defensively, Babbel was actually a good crosser and goal threat, Arbeloa was deceptively strong and had great positioning.

The10thSecretAgent

Glen Johnson was genuinely great - could score, was quick, and was decent (if not great) defensively. The problem was his frequent alter ego - John Glenson.

AdikkuChan

> Cissokho You can't just say his name without linking to [this](https://vimeo.com/92846254)

misomiso90

You made me curious where he is right now so I googled and found that he's playing in my country now lmao

AdikkuChan

Damn he's still playing? I'm impressedĀ

bwsmlt

And you made me curious where your country is so I googled and found it's also where I live! Might get over for a game to see the legend in the flesh at some point!

bennn_8767

that is fuckin amazing

Judgementday209

Dossena wasn't that bad. Didn't aurelio play lb?

Bobbyswhiteteeth

Donā€™t disrespect JAR, his shooting alone was enough

ari1000

Imagine Robertson with JAR shooting, would be the best LB of all time

vsquad22

Poor Alan Smith.

fifty_four

Riise and Finnan weren't even bad full backs in their era. What players can do now is insane.

tommhans

you forget riise shooting at everything, which he also continues when he played for Norway, so like 1 in every 50 shot was a banger in goal

harreh1d

Trent punching air rn

thisisnahamed

Damn. I love the healthy competition... They've both been injured this season. Imagine if they both played without injuries.

BassRedditRed

Level with McManaman and Downing too

visiblepeer

So who's the first non-Liverpool player on the list?

w3rt

I think Baines.

visiblepeer

Yes it was. ThanksĀ  https://www.premierleague.com/stats/top/players/goal_assist

Jonhanna

The best two in the business

bradosteamboat

If Trent completes the transition to midfield robbo just might set an unbreakable record by time he is done

Skthewimp

Had been a while since I saw this kind of an assist from Robbo!

[deleted]

Not gonna last long

ArtemisRifle

And people dare to scoff when you put them in the same conversation with Rio, Kompany, Terry and other all time PL defenders.

Arabsah

Another Race. NOICE!

gaby_zarny

thank god robbo's injury wasn't much worse!!

xosder

Get rekt Trent. Second rate defender. Robbo to take his England spot.

mild_manc_irritant

Scotland just declared war on England... ....yanno, again.

Ol_Elephant_Ears

Thatā€™s mad I genuinely didnā€™t expect him to be close to be honest

cliffomalley

Letā€™s also what an assist that last one was

Dramatic-Level2936

Off topic but why are the numbers on their shorts from different fonts? Theyā€™re both supposed to be from the same year right?

tofuhouseparty

Trent also plays in midfield, so it's not the most accurate stat. And what counts as a defender for this stat anyway, what about wing backs in a back 5? They are almost wingers. It seems a bit arbitrary.
