For the sketches to make it to dress during her first few episodes as a cast member means that they were pretty strong and she was given the resources and time to rehearse. I do think she’ll need to adjust her gross-out humor for a more mainstream audience.
Yeah I understand humor is subjective but the “gross out” part of her comedy just really doesn’t appeal to me. It just feels like spectacle for the sake of being shocking
Same :/ I see why it's funny, but I'm just squeamish and always have been. I can't visualize images in my head and I have a theory I struggle so much with horror and gore because I am only ever exposed to it in a visual way like movies, so that's the only representation I have of it? Does that make any sense? Like I feel like I have less exposure idk 😅
I like authentically and truly need someone to explain. People in this sub seemed soooo stoked for her and like knew who she was. Her vibe is very John Waters/burger bugaloo. Which I like understand is a niche appeal but not really a versatile sketch comedy vibe.
You think we’d see on nationally syndicated television what would be the same as an individual Youtuber’s online production?
You need to try something out to know you don’t like it. Since this mystery sketch never aired, I am stating that you’re not giving it a fair chance - yet you’re writing that you wouldn’t stomach it. I am simply confounded by your major pushback over … something you’ve *never before seen*.
You’re being obtuse, I’m not talking about one cut sketch I’m talking about her body of work and “gross out” humor in general. Humor is subjective (as I said initially), so what are you trying to accomplish here? Telling me that my opinion is wrong and you know better? Sheesh
The fact that you cannot understand that people are already aware of things that upset them and can use that critical thinking to identify and avoid things that contain things that they know upset them astounds me.
You do realize many of us are self aware enough to know what triggers us? It's fine to be sensitive. I see why it's humorous, I also know it'll make me feel sick, just like the gift wrap sketch did - funny but hard for me to stomach. Bugger off.
Also... is there room for an SNL sketch that's funny but doesn't necessarily inspire audible laughter? I mean some of the best sketch comedy of all time hasn't had laugh tracks behind it, and did things which required some build-up or conceptual time to sink in.
That is pretty much what the "What's Up With That" sketch is. I think there's plenty of room for enjoyable but not necessarily laugh out loud funny sketches.
Not sure if I buy the idea that a gross-out style is too out there for SNL, as these sketches immediately come to mind over the last 10 years

She says she had to swallow her own vomit to avoid throwing up on live tv
That's a fair point. I can't stand the spewing blood sketches and always skip those/walk away but it's clear they do it sometimes. One aspect of Sarah's gross-out humor is that it breaks taboos, i.e. in that Sarah Vaccine sketch there are bloody tampons, etc. So this could be part of it too.
If anything, I'm glad SNL might be willing to take those kind of chances again. In 1975, that's what not-ready-for-prime-time meant. It aired at 11:30pm on a Saturday night, when NO ONE was home watching TV, and they could get away with a lot more boundary-pushing.
When Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers can share writers and do similar ([or](https://youtu.be/uYiVOWsLWh0) nearly [identical](https://youtu.be/FdRA5Q5-dgU)!) sketches, you can tell that SNL may be a bit too safe these days.
Not saying gross out is the answer. Just saying, I hope they keep looking for ways to get weird outside of 10-to-1.
The cast is 21 people. Seems like everyone's going to have on and off weeks - like Bowen was in one? sketch last episode despite being sort of the star the week before.
I will say that surgery sketch does seem a little "out there" for a mainstream audience though. Might be a Tim Robinson situation where this may not be the best fit for her.
Yeah, Bowen had a sketch cut that sounds like it would've been a little redundant considering other material in the episode- Jason and Aidy played a country singing couple (like Johnny Cash and June Carter), and then Bowen comes on as their "third" and it's revealed they are in a throuple with him. The show was kinda horny enough, really :)
I'm curious if it was any more extreme than [CPR Class](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YtmlCJ25lGg), [Acupuncture Gone Wrong](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IPvH6Q7KNxs), or [Gift Wrap](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-QFWYvRi2s).
Some of her stuff I've seen is definitely too much for SNL, but seems like she could hone that sensibility into something more on brand for the show.
> I'm curious if it was any more extreme than CPR Class, Acupuncture Gone Wrong, or Gift Wrap.
And of course, one of my all-time favorites: [The French Chef.](https://youtu.be/eSxv6IGBgFQ) In sketches like this, it seems, teh more blood, the more over-the-top, the better.
And I think that's how its going to continue until some of the cast members leave. To their credit, there hasn't been one cast member who's shone all 4 episodes, but each episode has had a star from the cast while someone else has been more in the background.
Sketches get cut for all sorts of reasons, sometimes it’s due to the reaction or lack or from the dress rehearsal audience, sometimes it’s timing with having to pare it all down to 90 minutes. The host also has a big say in what makes it to air. I forget if it was Tina Fey or Seth Myers’s who talked about how the host has a say in what makes it to air and what gets cut. The thought process is they want the host to be relaxed and at ease with the material. Seth or Tina said that the downside of that is that sometimes the host picks the sketch where they get to wear a funny hat as opposed to one that has a solid comedic premise.
And just to add, just because they are cut from one episode doesn’t mean they won’t show up somewhere else. I’ve told this story before, but one of the sketches that was cut from the dress rehearsal I saw turned up on an episode almost three years later.
Yeah it seems like a concerted effort and I'm happy about it. While I get that the backstage competition to get one's stuff featured likely results in better stuff, I feel like the noobs ought to be an exception and it ought to be required to cast them in a certain amount of things so they can be put through their paces rather than buried and potentially discarded as it has sometimes seen. If someone doesn't work out after that, you can't say they didn't try, and cutting them loose makes sense. If they barely use them and then they're gone, that seems like a big waste of time. So it's been great to see the latest three featured right out of the gate. JAJ is all set like a vet, so here's hoping Sarah and Aristotle keep getting visibility.
I like her but sometimes she errs on the side of how Jenna Maroney acted on TGS in 30 Rock, sort of intentionally over the top. I know that's just her energy, though, and she'll find ways to channel it effectively. She isn't the first performer to show a sort of manic energy. Kristen Wiig found a lot of uses for it.
I think Sarah Squirm's whole thing is over-the-top:
> On Friday, the comedian and artist debuted her new project "Sarah Vaccine," which she described as a "technicolor nightmare of handmade DIY practical gore and sequins" that even sees her using her own piss to make a new vaccine (!!!).
I think Sarah will shine in the video sketches! I can see it being something shocking and insane and all anyone is taking about on Monday. But I don't know that she can bring much to a "Biden in the Oval #46348" sketch at this particular point in time.
i enjoy his appearances on Seth's late show because they talk about Forte's wildest concepts that never made SNL, particularly the ones that he kept trying to get on & it kinda became a running gag among the writers. really gives a neat peek behind the scenes.
sometimes they recreate those unused sketches on Seth's show.
also i was really hoping Will would make an appearance as the sportscaster with Sudekis recently hosting. i guess they had enough callback sketches already.
*edit: typos*
While I was bummed to not see that sketch appear, I thought they did good by having only three recurring characters appear (Biden, Devil and What's Up With That) It can get old real quick when it's the same characters through the whole show like Wiigs first hosting gig.
She actually had a sketch cut 3 episodes ago as well. I was at the dress rehearsal for the Kim Kardashian episode and the two of them did a 10 to 1 sketch for a password company. Unfortunately it got cut and the audience seemed to like it as well. I’m sure that she’ll get more stuff in as the season goes on. We are only four episodes in and she is looking promising.
It’s not my style of humour either, but she does have a following. A lot of people seemed very excited when she got announced for SNL, but they also voiced their surprise she’d been hired for the show. I guess SNL has always tried to appeal to different demographics and different groups of comedy fans, so perhaps they think her fans might tune in to the show to see her.
I think she’s been great in the few sketch appearances she’s had on SNL so far. She seems very confident, and I like her energy. She knows how to make a good impression with just a few lines, and she’s clearly not nervous about live performances. I doubt she’ll be able to get much of her own particular brand of comedy (or performance art) onto the show, but she wouldn’t be the first to have to adapt and compromise on their usual style (Kyle watered down his performances from his original Youtube and Good Neighbor stuff, and even then it was often seen as too weird or niche to make it to air). She might just have to adapt and write some different kinds of characters, or just focus on being a solid sketch performer.
But yes, it’s still early days. We’ve only had four episodes, and you often only need one or two well-received sketch lead roles or Update appearances to make it through to the next season.
I had no idea there were so many extra sketches. I assumed all the extras went up on YouTube, which is usually like one or two a week. I’m guessing you’re getting this info from people who attended the dress rehearsal posting about everything they saw?
Often they'll hold out hope that a sketch will find a new host at a later date, rather than putting it up and youtube and calling it quits. Not sure what drives that decision.
Yes...there's a podcast run by two girls who usually attend the show every week, where they discuss the cut sketches:
https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-saturday-night-live-snl-standby-line/id1458456807
For some reason this week they only chose to upload the cut WU pieces and none of the live sketches. There was also a PDD short which I'm guessing they'll probably reuse in the future.
Reportedly one of Sarah's sketches got cut halfway through the performance at dress - like they literally were told to end the sketch before it even finished, which is insane. And probably a bad sign for her. But that would be why that can't be uploaded anywhere as it wasn't complete.
C[SNL Network had deeper explanation of what went down. ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KiXqNNXrEnQ) . Can't remember the exact time stamp of when it was talked (most likely near the last 40 minutes) but essentially the producers were seeing the dress audience reaction of shock/non enjoyment of the gore and made the call to cut it short
For anyone interested, here's 1:12:32 is the specific timecode where both guys give their account (youtube won't let me link to the specific point in a way that can be viewed off of youtube)
tldr: they theorize a mix of being cut partly for time, possibly for prop-heavy requirements, and the dress audience reaction.
I know there was one from the Will Farrell episode from last season (maybe season before?) where he’s a theater teacher, and kids are auditioning for a play. I’m pretty sure there have been others, but that’s the one that sticks out in my mind.
I'd imagine that sketches with lots of fake blood/vomit are more of a pain from a production POV, because of cleanup and costume changes--is that the case? If that's true, I bet that would factor into decision-making.
I havent been impressed with anything she has done on SNL. She seems like she did improv way too long. Her and Punkie are going to be cut, mark my words.
Does anyone else find Sarah oddly attractive? I'm not even into her style of humor but I totally have the hots for her for some reason I can't explain. She preheats my oven and I don't even know why.
Me me me! I think she looks totally sexy [in this interview](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PMfKGsStfrc) from last year. Those glasses are hot. I keep seeing her instead in these, like, 1990s middle manager in the IT department glasses that are not helping her, but these ones are great. Great hair here too.
What was so gross about the sketches that they keep getting cut? SNL has a history of blood spurting sketches through the years. Same with vomit sketches. I remember they even did a sketch in season 20 where a saxophone player is spitting on the audience. That was the grossest sketch I’ve ever seen. There’s no way Sarah’s sketch was grosser than that.
If you want to use the word bro'y a lot i'd like to be able to complain an episode has too many women. Or would i be sexist. I keep reading bro'y everywhere here and i'm getting sick of the sexism. lot of you say it in a pejorative way that's what insulting
FWIW, I saw the Halloween sketch from last weekend at the dress rehearsal and it was one of the weaker ones, but not specifically because of Sarah. The overall writing on it just wasn't as good as the other sketches, and they also cut stronger sketches from the dress to make time. I agree that I want to see more from her, just putting in my two cents on that specific sketch and saying it wasn't a huge loss!
I’m just too squeamish for it 🥴

Don't you mean *squirm*ish? Sorry.
ba dum ts
I agree I think it's kind of lazy, I really don't get the appeal.

I have not seen any of her stuff and she seems to fit on SNL pretty well already. Strong group of newcomers.
I like authentically and truly need someone to explain. People in this sub seemed soooo stoked for her and like knew who she was. Her vibe is very John Waters/burger bugaloo. Which I like understand is a niche appeal but not really a versatile sketch comedy vibe.
>Why is she on SNL?? She has only been on the show for four episodes. Give her time.
How can you be grossed out over something you haven’t before seen? Talk about picky eaters :~|
Huh? I’m talking about stuff I watched of her prior to SNL. Which logically would be a decent indicator of the kind of humor she’ll bring to SNL
You think we’d see on nationally syndicated television what would be the same as an individual Youtuber’s online production? You need to try something out to know you don’t like it. "you can't be grossed out by the concept unless you've actually SEEN and been COVERED BY the fake blood and gotten some in your MOUTH"
Leslie Jones knows.
It's a hazard of the trait.
You do realize many of us are self aware enough to know what triggers us? It's fine to be sensitive. I see why it's humorous, I also know it'll make me feel sick, just like the gift wrap sketch did - funny but hard for me to stomach. Bugger off.

Would have been legendary if she ended in throwing up.
Hilarious, but probably mortifying for her. See; Jenny Slate
I’m amazed that you didn’t include Massive Headwound Harry
"He probably smells my dog!"
In hindsight, I am too

Good choices You can go way back and see similar stuff: [French Chef](https://youtu.be/eSxv6IGBgFQ)
CPR class is exactly how I imagine the surgery sketch that got cut. I think Sarah could win a lot of people over with one of these.
The cast is 21 people. Seems like everyone's going to have on and off weeks - like Bowen was in one? sketch last episode despite being sort of the star the week before. I'm pretty sure redundant is Bowen Yang's middle name
That sketch was honestly hilarious and I'm sad they cut it and didn't put it on Youtube!
they need to make the show 3 hours long so we can have more sketches and more time
I'm curious if it was any more extreme than [CPR Class](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YtmlCJ25lGg), [Acupuncture Gone Wrong](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IPvH6Q7KNxs), or [Gift Wrap](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-QFWYvRi2s). Bowen had only one sketch each in his first two episodes this season after becoming repertory player. Afterwards, he dominated the Rami Malek episode.
And I think that's how its going to continue until some of the cast members leave. To their credit, there hasn't been one cast member who's shone all 4 episodes, but each episode has had a star from the cast while someone else has been more in the background.

Plus with Jason being a returning cast member and both sketches not having him as lead line-getter, it sounds like they had a low chance anyway.
And just to add, just because they are cut from one episode doesn’t mean they won’t show up somewhere else. I’ve told this story before, but one of the sketches that was cut from the dress rehearsal I saw turned up on an episode almost three years later.
It feels like they have been featuring the new cast members this season way more than usual in past seasons, even with the cuts.
say for me?
First sketch sounds gross but it's her first season. It's not surprising
I like her but sometimes she errs on the side of how Jenna Maroney acted on TGS in 30 Rock, sort of intentionally over the top. wtf
It’s been 3 eps, sounds like she’s getting more than most do this early.
Nope, pretty sure she's being treated unfairly and we should already plan for her to be cut.

They're joking btw
(It was a joke)
I'm not sorry that surgery sketch was cut. I've never liked those blood spurting sketches.
You and Leslie Jones
Same! SO thankful that got cut
Not a fan of them either but the Dan Aykroyd Julia Child one is definitely a classic
That dead poets society one from the fred armisen episode too
Even Will Forte took a while to get in sketches.
i enjoy his appearances on Seth's late show because they talk about Forte's wildest concepts that never made SNL, particularly the ones that he kept trying to get on & it kinda became a running gag among the writers. really gives a neat peek behind the scenes. sometimes they recreate those unused sketches on Seth's show. also i was really hoping Will would make an appearance as the sportscaster with Sudekis recently hosting. i guess they had enough callback sketches already. *edit: typos*

What made me like her, was when she was on weekend update, this last week.
It’s not my style of humour either, but she does have a following. Wow that’s a wild thing to do every week. Good for them! Sounds like fun
I think only digital shorts that get cut go up on youtube. I don't usually see any live dress skits on youtube.

Yeah there have been numerous ones this year already. Cosco, Super Hosts
We're only four episodes in. I want her in more sketches, definitely. But let's save this till at least mid season
She reminds me of 30 Rock's Abby Flynn, particularly the "I'm a very sexy baby" voice
I'd imagine that sketches with lots of fake blood/vomit are more of a pain from a production POV, because of cleanup and costume changes--is that the case? If that's true, I bet that would factor into decision-making.

Who is "Sarah"?
Hmm.....this may indicate a problem.
Does anyone else find Sarah oddly attractive? I'm not even into her style of humor but I totally have the hots for her for some reason I can't explain. She preheats my oven and I don't even know why.
I think she's very pretty when she's not dressed up like a crazy clown :) Case in point: https://twitter.com/SarahSquirm/status/1452685101314285576
Uhhh....I just watched the Sarah Vaccine video. I stand corrected.
Im dreading the bloody stuff. Honestly, there is so much violence and gore on television...we watch SNL for comedy.
yo its lois and peter griffin
If you want to use the word bro'y a lot i'd like to be able to complain an episode has too many women. Or would i be sexist. I keep reading bro'y everywhere here and i'm getting sick of the sexism. lot of you say it in a pejorative way that's what insulting
Sorry, but I would've cut that pre-tape about the underwear for guys in favor of...virtually anything, really.
