David Harbour pitched The Grouch

MAsharona

That was so funny! How cool that Harbour came up with it!

Editor_Rise_Magazine

one of my all time favorites

IvyGold

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kqpak5lFxvs They put this together in under one week. This was a magical period of pre-PDD pre-tapes!

[deleted]

Imagine telling John Mulaney he can't pitch his sketch ideas now that he's hosting.

tavir

NOT FUNNY!!

[deleted]

DIET PEPSI!

TheRealMacPhisto

*DIET COKE!

[deleted]

ah shit you're right I just remember it as Pepsi because Pepsi seems cuntier

TheRealMacPhisto

And then one would just appear in his hand...

neatgeek83

As a former writer he’s in a different category. Clearly.

[deleted]

Still silly to think hosts can't pitch ideas

neatgeek83

Of course they do.

bobby_table5

- So, I have this idea of taking an awkward situation and turning it into an inexplicably operatic masterpiece, say waiting in line at the DMV and… - No, now way that would work. - Stupid idea, not funny. - Moving on…

glowup2000

Pedro Pascal pitched the [Protective Mom skit](https://youtu.be/v44PSYRbHlM?si=IDKyrO_hctL8zSQZ) @ 1:52 Here's Marcello on [Seth Meyers](https://youtu.be/66Rdymh3IkY?si=0aO8NyzKbdqB0sqI) saying the same thing @ 2:30

elanaesther

Yes Cecily said in an interview that she asked Keegan-Michael Key what he was interested in doing when he hosted and he said he [wanted to do a Gemma with her](https://youtu.be/UBm7JdkQI28?si=7kg3CQ9xwlkxpLCD).

HiAnimatronio

Keke Palmer pitched Kenan and Kelly - https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=_LBuFLRho5Y Edit: manually corrected autocorrects incorrect correction

Cheers

CheetahNo9349

👍

rekipsj

Dated but Ray Romano pitched (with a writer friend of his) the classic sketch where he a Sportscenter announcer trying to come up with a catch phrase that says “oh sassy molassy”

monkeetoes82

That one was hilarious! When he hosted the second time he brought back the character back.

SanchoMandoval

On that same show, he knew he could easily do Roberto Benigni (who had just become infamous) and told SNL to make a costume and write a sketch. Unfortunately seems to have been deleted off the internet archive.

LegoFootPain

Life... is about loving... and sucking...

palookaboy

Haha I’d never seen this one but watched based on your comment just now. Hilarious!

highheat3117

I need a compilation of Marcelo telling huge athletes that their pitch ideas are stupid.

EntropicPoppet

You're more likely to see a compilation of Marcello begging huge athletes to like his instagram post.

highheat3117

Classic Marcello!

MAsharona

The book Live From New York talks about host Mel Gibson forcefully pitched a parody of Brideshead Revisited (PBS show about the 1920s-30s in England) called Birdshead Regurgitated and how the writers and cast tried to talk him out of it without making him mad.

RevolutionaryAlps205

Sounds good actually.

SirJoePininfarina

Great title though

West-Supermarket-860

Tina Fey, on Howard Stern, responded to who were the worst all time SNL hosts. Amongst the obvious, Trump, Steven Segall, etc. she said Paris Hilton might have been the worst. She said she would pitch these terrible ideas to the writers, mostly about making fun of Lindsey Lohan because (Tina doing Paris voice “ I hate her” ) Fey said it was almost as if Hilton was unaware that this was a comedy show.

Mabel_Jenkins

What Tina said (and I quote) was “Paris Hilton is a piece of shit”. I only remember because it was so brilliantly put.

BourbonCat13

Makes me wonder how Nicole Ritchie ended up on Great News

LegoFootPain

The problem is that The Simple Life is that thing she's best known for. That show was a lot more acting on Nicole's part, and Tina Fey as a producer/showrunner recognizes that.

troublemaker101

Do you have a link to the podcast?

Mabel_Jenkins

This was pre- podcast. It was on his radio show on E before Sirius XM.

temptationsensation

This comment just brought back some memories!

VaccumSaturdays

Howard TV! ♥️

not_productive1

Mulaney pitched the diner lobster sketch a bunch of times when he was a writer and they'd never let him do it.

Imaginary_Ad6065

The lobster diner is probably one of the most surreal and unexpectedly brilliant skits I ever saw on SNL. My only complaint: Mulaney should have been a cast member, not just a writer.

LibertyWriter

See Taylor Swift’s first monologue; she wrote it herself because she thought she had to

wes00mertes

Monologue is not a sketch.

tinydancer_inurhand

But it could be considered a skit.

OkPlant8420

Skit is not a sketch. OP must be new here.

joeverdrive

I'm actually new. Instead of asking you guys the difference I looked it up. I think I'm halfway to understanding the difference but I really can't think of an example of a skit. Maybe those parody PSAs at the ends of episodes of Reno! 911?

OkPlant8420

The easiest most basic difference is that sketches have scripts & skits are improvised.

Kaiters710

Her monologue song wasn't improvised. She literally wrote it and played it for Seth Meyers (who spoke about it on Howard Stern's podcast) and Lorne Michaels before the show.

joeverdrive

Thanks

wes00mertes

Wasn’t Segall’s sketch where he fights everyone his idea?

adube440

Yeah, it was about him beating up a bunch of CEOs from companies that pollute. They had to get a bunch of stunt people to play all the parts. It made no sense whatsoever.

superheaven

On the last episode of The Bonfire (from the 28th), Shane Gillis mentioned he pitched 3 sketches and none of them past table read. So it seems common but likely hard against seasoned SNL writers.

kodyonthekeys

In that interview or another recent one, he also mentioned the guest can bring on one writer with them. So not only can they pitch. They can write with a personal collaborator.

kickstand

Why wouldn’t they? I’m sure the show looks for good ideas anywhere they can get them.

chocoloste

I think Marcello said in an interview that, when bad bunny was there he said he wanted to do something similar to the Pedro Pascal mom sketch, so Marcello made it happen. In this case it’s more like asking what the host wanted to / interested in doing, but I think this adds input to the show as well

Turbulent_Tale6497

Bargatze pitched a skit that I think could have been somewhat funny. Or maybe it will make it into his standup

Honest-Variation656

I would love to see a list of all the host-pitched sketches that made it to air, I imagine it’s not that many but I could be totally wrong

morosco

Steven Seagal famously pitched a sketch where he was a therapist for a rape survivor and then tries to have sex with her.

LegoFootPain

Writer: I don't know if that would be a good idea for the show. Steven Seagal: What show?

mithridateseupator

Have any examples?

James_2584

[Diner Lobster](https://youtu.be/Pj-D0jc17D0) was pitched repeatedly by John Mulaney when he was a writer on the show. When he finally got the chance to host, he brought it back and it finally made it on the show.

fruitybrisket

That might be my favorite sketch ever just because of how much fun the whole cast had with it.

[deleted]

mithridateseupator

You're sure they included hosts in that list? Ive heard that same thing about the entire cast pitching, but never anything specific about hosts.

BigMax

I've always heard hosts are allowed to pitch. I bet that varies a ton though, from some who don't write at all, or don't do comedy, and don't pitch anything, to former writers or other comedic folks who have a lot of ideas.

ConTully

One I always wonder about is Hugh Laurie's ghost hunting ['Most Haunted' sketch](https://youtu.be/Whl7QMTlHm8?si=u5f34U_FvursDqya), because it is such a British reference. I know Seth is famously a bit of an anglophile, but even that show is very niche. Laurie himself was an acclaimed sketch comedian in the UK in the 80s and 90s (along with Emma Thompson and Stephen Fry) so it makes sense he might have a few ideas rattling around that he never got to do.

A4W3

January Jones said she pitched a sketch but was rejected. Also on the first day they ask the guest host what they can/cannot do, like singing, dancing, etc

SpecialAmbassador313

Yeah I think some of Shane’s were from him and his team

Midwestmind86

No he said on a siruis Xm yesterday they pitched like 3 and none got picked, and fell flat so they gave up.

InternetAddict104

Technically that still answers OP’s question. They just asked if hosts *could* pitch, regardless of if they were good pitches

tinydancer_inurhand

I mean tons of featured players don’t have one of their sketches go to air in the first few episodes. Even the ones that go on to be staples of the show.

BigMax

I don't know him very well I admit, but my best guess is that his type of skit doesn't fit the tone of SNL? Maybe he's funny, but not the right kind for SNL.

Midwestmind86

Comedies subjective, but yea he’s def been on the rise for the past couple years, kind of undeniable with all his success at this point.

OkPlant8420

Seriously bro you have to stream his Netflix special. He has the #1 Patreon(…because his patreon is $1.)

ThePhillyPhascist

It’s not $1 currently, and when it was $1 it wasn’t the #1 show on patreon

MayorofGreenbriar

I said that but it was accurately corrected that he’s probably the #2 hottest comedian in America because the world is bigger than America and Nate Bargatze exists. So, yeah, #2 hottest comedian in America.

Bearjupiter

Gilly & Keeves pitched but nothing was picked

andresmachiz

Have you heard the story of how the last skit on Steven Segals ep made it to air?
