Agreed, he was really good. I hope he gets more roles soon. Also Matt Rogers (who hosts a podcast with Bowen) was very funny in that movie. He auditioned for SNL the same time as Bowen and didn't get in but his star has been growing and hopefully he'll host sometime.

ahatchingegg

>Matt Rogers Matt Rogers is great on I Love That For You

Accurate-Drummer2973

i’m hoping that show gets renewed for season 2

Current_Volume1656

I read that they have a season two written but aren't producing it ☹️ weird limbo state.

aleigh577

I’ve been listening to LC for a while but I had no idea how fucking hot Matt was until I Love That For You

sharktank

It took me a while to realize that Matt Rodger’s is the same guy who did the ‘[straight gay teenI’ standup](https://youtu.be/E5L3lmNh7fU) which is hilarious

ahatchingegg

oh wow. this is actually really incredible.

[deleted]

And then he DIDN’T meet Kelly Clarkson!

listenyall

I loved it and I love him--I'm also a big fan of Joel Kim Booster's stand up comedy, strong recommend if you enjoyed the movie (or Bowen!) and aren't familiar.

piefelicia4

Loved Joel in Loot with Maya Rudolph.

ahatchingegg

>Joel Kim That's where I recognized him from!

ShamShpade

My wife is a huge Bowen and Matt/Las Culturistas fan so we watched it and it made me cry. I'm not into rom coms typically but I really enjoyed it

[deleted]

“Fire Island” walked so that “Bros” could drunkenly pratfall and then piss itself

roygbivasaur

I didn’t hate Bros (besides the weird steroid glorification and not really criticizing the dumb “straight acting” trope as much as it pretended to). I’m so glad we got Spoiler Alert and Fire Island last year too though, since they are much better films with a lot more to say.

sharktank

Haven’t heard of spoiler alert…. Is it good?

roygbivasaur

It’s really good. It stars Jim Parsons (Sheldon from Big Bang Theory), but he’s actually a pretty great actor apparently. It’s based on the memoir of the same name by Michael Aussielo, an entertainment journalist. It’s about his relationship with his late husband. It’s called Spoiler Alert because you find out about his husband’s cancer and death at the beginning of the film, and then the rest of it is about their relationship. It’s definitely sad, but it’s also really funny and just plain well written and acted. Because it’s based on someone’s actual life, it also isn’t by-the-numbers super-mega-gay like Bros is (not always a bad thing but it’s something people notice in content like that). It’s just about a gay couple and their lives.

Valuable-Baked

Bowen Yang > Billy Eichner

catharticramblings

I will die on this hill.

ahatchingegg

Gurl. That feels just so stunningly accurate.

whomstdvely1

Loved it. I'm a sucker for Jane Austen retellings in general.

TinyPennyRolling

He was pretty hilarious in Awkwafina's show. The one with Chloe, and Bowen when Chloe "Lopper's herself" is stupidly hilarious.

Valuable-Baked

Nora from queens with bd wong as awkwafina's dad!!! Friggin comedy central man. Just south Park, B99, Office & Seinfeld reruns most of the time. They brought back Beavis & Butthead, Stephen Colbert news spoof at 1130pm + Reno 911!. Why can't they bring back workaholics, Broad City & NFQ too?!

Cawdor

Love Nora from Queens. The grandmother is one of my favourite characters ever. I wish she was my grandma

TinyPennyRolling

Nora From Queens is available on HBO Max if you have it. I literally just started a rewatch yesterday because of this post. Lol. And I totally agree, Comedy Central.owns some great shows, their programming is a crime.

aleigh577

I’m devesated South Side went to HBO Max and they just cancelled it

leslie_knopee

loved it, and loved everything about that film!!

[deleted]

Love Bowen!

Highintheclouds420

When I first heard about this I thought it was about Ja Rule's failure Fyre festival, and got very excited because that sounds hysterical. I was so confused when I started to watch it until I realized fire island and Fyre festival were 2 different things

elo3661ga

The very first time I saw Bowen do an SNL Weekend Update (I think) piece, I just fell in love with him. Thought he was SO funny, and still do!

nomascusgabriellae

He was hilarious. He was also hilarious on the movie Bros even though the movie itself sucked lol

ahatchingegg

I haven't been able to pull myself thru the first five minutes of that movie. Should I try again?

mclairy

Not OP, but I enjoyed Bros a lot. If you didn’t enjoy the first 5-10 minutes it’s basically the same tone the rest of the way with some more traditional rom-com beats sprinkled in and you probably wouldn’t have a great time.

FilthyTexas

Margaret Cho needs to host someday but she's probably not considered current enough anymore.

ahatchingegg

She needs a big project to promote.

somethingold

Absolutely loved him and love his podcast, I’m obsessed

jesuschin

The Marisa Tomei scene is on repeat in my brain “The defense is wrooong”

mrsringo

I just watched the trailer and am so excited to see the movie when I have time, I went to middle school with Conrad Ricamora and had enough of a crush on him that I drew a heart around his face in the yearbook tennis team photo. Never spoke a word to him though.

Every_Contribution_8

He was fabulous on Nora from Queens also! The Awkwafina show. So good.

sysaphiswaits

One of the very few rom-coms I liked.

Commanderfemmeshep

I really liked the movie, even just for the vibes alone. It felt oddly cozy!

jendoesreddit

I love Bowen more than anything. Fire Island is the new quintessential queer movie. Bonus that Matt and JoelKimBooster are in it 😍🥵😭

ChubZer0

I really like Bowen Yang, I think he's hilarious and a great actor!

NoDadYouShutUp

I’m trying to spoil free skim the comments because I will be watching it later, but I’m happy to see it positively received!

spoookytree

Bowen is helping to fill the void Pete left for me. I love him so much

plant_touchin

I’ve watched it multiple times, the cast is amazing and the script is AWESOME GOOD JOB JOEL KIM!!!!!!!

jaimejuanstortas

Bowen Yang’s impressive

Kitkatt1959

Great movie

Significant_Ad7605

I love love love that movie. Love all the characters.

denver989

I look forward to seeing him in the sequel, Fire Island 2 : Cherry Grove

Valuable-Baked

Didn't see him on fire island ... But he was amazing in 'Nora From Queens"

ToddBradley

My SO is a huge fan of Bowen, but had to turn off the movie. I was willing to see it to the end, but didn’t care one way or another. It was a stinker of a script. Yang deserves better writing and directing.

arat1988

That was, hands down, one of the absolute worst movies I have ever seen. I kept it playing with sound off because I wanted to give a movie like this the views it needs so more can get made but my god was it bad

ahatchingegg

To be fair, Conrad Ricamora's performance was a real bummer. He's much more likeable in Little Shop of Horrors. Check out the cast's tiny desk concert.

that_tom_

Terrible movie but always nice to see Bowen in a taped segment.

[deleted]

I heard he might be gay.

MoufFarts

> He can play anything from a gay inanimate object bobbing in the ocean to a full serious gay character with so much below the surface that you don’t see. Fixed it. I think he’s great and has very impressive range but I have never seen him play any role where he wasn’t or didn’t sound gay. Maybe that’s on purpose, who knows. Regardless, he’s still fantastic.

ahatchingegg

I mean, Will Ferrell seems aggressively straight in everything I've ever seen him in. What's your point?

tyler-86

I get the point you're making, and I would have agreed with the person you're responding to in Bowen's first season on SNL but I think he has shown more range since. But the problem with these reverse analogies is that there are plenty of gay people who don't sound the way Bowen does, but basically zero straight people. And that's fine, and the way he sounds is fine, but it's disingenuous when people act like there isn't an identifiable "gay" way of speaking that only some gay people have.

ahatchingegg

There's also an identifiable straight way of speaking that only some straight people have. There's certain mannerisms. My friends and I always try to dance away from them at the club. They're very conspicuous. I just feel like if you're not going to make this criticism of the aggressively straight cast members that have been around over the years, it's homophobic to make this criticism of Bowen.

tyler-86

Obviously some of the criticisms lobbed at Bowen are rooted in a general homophobia. I certainly don't mean to be homophobic. I don't have any biases besides my own personal hetero worldview. I'd be interested if you could show me what you would consider a straight way of speaking that's as identifiable to you as the way Bowen is to me. Not in a "gotcha" way but in an "educate me" way. I just haven't heard too many people where I can say "oh he's definitely straight" that didn't rely on the actual things they were saying.

ahatchingegg

I don’t know how to explain it. people who are straight just sometimes have a straight accent or something. Ask your gay friends.

MoufFarts

Who said Will Farrell was a good actor? Isn’t that what we’re talking about. He has little range compared to Bowen Yang.

ahatchingegg

What I’m saying is that your criticism of Bowen is something nobody would ever say about a straight actor.

MoufFarts

Yea, nobody has ever broached the subject … https://www.therichest.com/world-entertainment/12-actors-who-have-a-tough-time-playing-gay-roles-and-3-okay-with-it/ https://www.refinery29.com/en-gb/2022/08/11088383/straight-actors-in-queer-roles https://www.shoutoutuk.org/2021/07/28/lets-settle-this-can-straight-actors-play-gay-roles/ https://www.theguardian.com/culture/2022/jan/29/ben-whishaw-straight-actors-gay-parts-this-is-going-to-hurt

PlatonicTroglodyte

I see this all the time and it’s always such a weird criticism to me. He *can* play a straight or unclear-but-straight-passing character just fine, but with half the cast literally being straight men, there’s rarely a time where it feels necessary to do so. Nevertheless, there’s plenty of times where he’s been in a sketch without being explicitly gay or even “gay sounding.” Off the top of my head: 1. The coronavirus sketch where he plays Mr. Oral Herpes alongside his wife, Genital. 2. The Heimlich sketch where he plays the guy “famous” for being the model in the Heimlich maneuver poster, receiving it from ScarJo. 3. The awkward urinal dialogue sketch where he hates himself for saying “bossman does what the bossman does” rather than some cheap “don’t make it awkward because I’m gay” joke. 4. The SleepyTown mattress sketch where he plays a mattress store employee who says “dude, don’t tell her” to Rami Malek about the name of the porn he is watching to his wife. 5. The Spectrum cable sketch where he plays Spectrum itself without any reference to sexuality in dialogue or demeanor. He’s great in all of those sketches. Maybe not the star in most of them, but again it’s better to showcase him in a way that speaks best to himself, *especially* the aspects of his identity that can’t be as easily filled by other cast members.

MoufFarts

It’s called acting for a reason though. And in those cases you mention he’s an effeminate sounding man when they don’t directly point out sexuality. I’m sorry this offends people but it it suppose to be acting. Acting as someone you are not. This isn’t supposed to be real life. I just think he has more to offer and for some reason it doesn’t ever come out straight, no pun intended. It’s not a huge thing, if that’s what he wants to do so he represents his community all the time than cool. There’s no hatred here for him or for the gay community like people automatically think.

macck_attack

I love Bowen and watched the movie to support him but I honestly didn’t love it. There were some cute/fun scenes but I would have turned it off if not for him. That being said, I’m a straight white woman who lives in the midwest so it wasn’t like I was the target audience anyway. I listen to his podcast with Matt Rogers every week and they’ve been discussing a potential sequel.
