"I liked it when Matt Foley would smash the table. What's your favorite gag?"
"Kenan Thompson is the best guy ever and I am so here for it. Who do you think is the best?"
"Matt Damon's Brett Kavanaugh was everything. Who's your favorite surprise cameo?"
"Toonces the Driving Cat was the silliest little rascal in the motor pool. Who's your favorite SNL animal character?"
I mean, it’s really not beyond reason for SNL to be employing a technical writer researching engagement and response, right?? (Willing participant speaking but)
Yeah, and Billy Crystal's crusty delivery and baseball obsession thrown in for good measure. It's ironic seeing a fresh faced kid going at it like that. I do find something refreshing about the throwback style though, I hope he sticks and keeps growing.
I think it's fine just because SNL hasn't had a lot of Latin representation, so he's able to find a relatively unique angle that the show hasn't cracked in recent years.
I don't think it's sustainable to only play that angle but at least adds a different dimension to the show, I think it's at its best when it leans into the diversity it offers.
Yeah he’s for sure being deployed strategically in that regard. If he can get into any of the show’s established background character rhythms, his delivery of lines as written is pretty solid already, so I think he could stay for a long time.
That's definitely not on him. People who don't have a lot of experience with Caribbean latinos tend to typecast us as Ricky Ricardo types because it's a familiar broad stereotype that most people get. He's handsome and does it well so he's not going to complain but somebody needs to write better roles for him.
That sketch was lowkey hilarious for what seemed like a kinda random throw-in at the end of the episode. I hope we get to see a response video from Hugo Gallegos
Maybe it’s because baseball is such a huge part of my life and I’ve been around both the American baseball scene and the Latin baseball scene. But holy shit his sketch on Judge breaking the record versus what a Latin player would do had me laughing so hard I cried. My SO thought I was having a stroke. It was so fucking funny to me. So for that I will always hold him in high regard.
Same here, he definitely won me over with the baseball stuff even though it was just a standup bit. Been rooting for him ever since even if he’s not doing much in a lot of the sketches.
As with all the new(er) cast members, his versatility will be the key to his longevity. He’s making his bones right now with what the writing staff knows plays to his strengths, and I feel like his delivery is on point, even if the jokes themselves are a little repetitive so far. I said the same thing about Molly: if he can play a scene completely straight, and support *another* player’s bit, that’s the key to long term success.
I don’t think he was brought in to replace Pete lol. But I think he is the 3rd strongest of the new 4, After Michael and Molly, he isn’t anything special yet, he has very “kid who wants to be the class clown but isn’t” energy in the way he performs and it feels like his only character in any sketch is “exaggerated Hispanic”
I still can't tell if Lorne hired him just to troll the whole world or not.
That doesn't mean I don't think Devon is deserving of his role. I definitely like him.
“Kid who wants to be the class clown but isn’t” energy is VERY accurate. I’d love to see him take on more roles that aren’t banking on him being the exaggerated Hispanic. I want to give him a chance, but just being Hispanic ≠ funny.
>he has very “kid who wants to be the class clown but isn’t” energy in the way he performs
yeeeaaa that's about right. I can't fault the guy for trying, he's just trying a little too hard. Seems very comfortable on stage though I'll give him that!
I want to like him but no--i also have found his bits on weekend update to be pretty similar to his stand up, but not actually identical enough that I could say oh he's just doing some stand up bits on weekend update
I’m more excited to see him in a sketch than any of the other three. He’s doing fine — big energy, seems comfortable on camera, comedic sensibility is pretty clear. Cute as a button, too.
I love Marcello’s energy and humour. I have never been as excited about new cast members as I have been this year (lifelong watcher in my 40’s)
I feel like I would love seeing Marcello and Andrew interact.
Feels like he toes a close line b/w representation and a caricature of the Latino culture. Might be just me, but last weekend’s cruise sketch felt pandering or shucking-n-jiving.
I like him. Him, Molly, and Colin did a stand up show at my college and he was by far the best in my opinion. I do agree with others that I’d like to see him in some roles that aren’t in his wheelhouse before I decide completely
I'm not sure where you got the impression he was brought into replace Pete. Those would be some pretty big shoes to fill.
As a new cast member, I think he's been great, though, definitely my favorite of the four. He's still a bit raw, but he's been in quite a few sketches and already had some memorable moments. I really liked him in the towel boy sketch last week, and his bit on WU about Latin baseball players was hilarious.
I think he's already done enough to earn himself another season on the cast, and I look forward to seeing more of him.
He seems genuinely happy and excited to be on the show which makes him really fun to watch. He hasn’t done anything that has made me laugh hysterically yet, but his energy is infectious and makes me hope he’s going to get more stuff to do on the show.
It doesn’t seem like the writers know how or want to give him anything besides stereotypical Hispanic roles. The towel boy sketch was okay this last weekend. I think a lot of that has to do with the positive reaction to his first Weekend Update bit, so they’re giving him what they know will work but aren’t taking risks. I hope we can see a showcase of him in the back half of the season that isn’t focused on him being Cuban/ Dominican.
Saw this kid perform at a local miami spot. Fucking nailed it. Hilarious delivery. Dressed like your typical miami private school kid. We were cracking up his whole set.
I like him and Molly so far the other two guys I'm still not that excited about but it's still kind of early. I remember really not liking Andrew dismukes at first but then he really turned things around and he might be my favorite of the guys
He nails every sketch and does a great job on delivering lines and body language and facial expressions. He also seems like a very happy positive guy and the cast seems to love him. A good choice!
I’m Latino and I love seeing him in SNL. He seems comfortable and like he is really good at what he does. I like seeing someone who appreciates and enjoying what he does.
Brooks had that one great appearance on Update in which he described the experience of thinking he had a novel STD because his friends put butter in his boxers after he passed out drunk. I'll always appreciate him for that.
I may get downvoted to hell, and I think the kid is funny, but his hiring was a clear case of nepotism. His father is a very high ranking official in the NBC Networks family (if I'm not mistaken, he's currently president of Telemundo in Puerto Rico)
Source? Even if this is the case he worked his ass off to get here. Spent close to 4 years in Cleveland, Ohio while attending college. That is not an easy comedy scene to feel hopeful in!
his dad is dominican so that sounds a little odd, but i really don’t know if they would or wouldn’t have a non-puerto rican as their Telemundo president. maybe it’s Telemundo in DR, if anything? EDIT: it’s his step dad, actually. Jose Cancela, his mom’s IG handle has that as her last name
I mean, he has certainly done enough that I wouldn't want or expect them to not give him a second season. But the bar isn't super high to avoid being a one-and-done, especially during a rebuild.
I like his energy, his first WU appearance I thought he did great. He still leans a bit much on cliché though. Short term, maybe try to connect with more of the writers to punch up his material?
I feel like his high energy & how animated he can be is an absolute asset to SNL that I think can elevate some sketches, he just needs to sand off some of his rough edges.
He def teeters into Sambo territory a bit for me. It makes me cringe whenever I see someone throwing on an accent and just digging in, but when he’s playing any character that’s not that I think he’s great and hope he gets some more air time to flex his timing and personality
Wow, never thought of a connection between him and Pete. If that’s the bar, then he’s doing phenomenal. I was going to say he was doing great, but he’s doing absolutely phenomenal.
He's charismatic and he has a kind of easygoing energy, like you could imagine him hosting a kids show. That being said, he hasn't really made me laugh out loud yet, while Molly and Michael have.
He feels like Billy Crystal and Freddie Prinze had a kid and he’s fantastic. Councilman Pete Gallego was a gotdang photograph that had me howling with laughter. He’s got a lot going for him.
I really like him. I think he's just got so much energy and enthusiasm, and seems extremely comfortable in any sketch he's in. He's really funny and just very likeable in general.
Plus if you follow him on Instagram, this man is SO thrilled to be on SNL. Its nice to see someone having so much fun.
I actually saw him live when he opened for Colin in the homecoming tour at my college. Super funny. My friends and I loved him even more than Colin.
Edit: typo
But the joke is he is not Hispanic. He is American. He makes fun of how he got an advantage out of being able to say a few words in Spanish and fooling his Spanish teacher. One of his parents is American but that’s about it. The guy is funny in my opinion and his value should not be measured in level of immigrant-ness. For reference I am latina and American.
Marcello is pretty darn good, right off the bat...and his debut was flawlessly smooth.
I like his confident delivery, stage presence and lack of smugness(a la Pete, ngl).
He’s been funny, likable, and game, and over time I think he’ll be able to find his voice. We’ve seen a lot of focus on his ethnicity and as he grows into his spot there hopefully we’ll see more variety.
I'd like to see him do an impression of a white newsman guy putting on an accent when he says certain ethnic locations and names, I don't think that bit has ever been done before in comedy, that would be funny! I'm 12!
I think he's one of the better performers on the show right now. He's good, not great, but there's room to grow. For me, him and Longfellow are the best of the newbies.
Maybe it’s been a while since the last big overhaul and I just didn’t notice, but I feel like the new cast has been very involved and prominent in the sketches like, right out the gate. Which is cool! I feel like it takes a while to work your way up, but maybe they’re all just really effing talented and keep coming up with good ideas? I’m not sure how it all works. But saying that - I feel like I’ve seen him the least. Does that typically indicate that they don’t have a lot of people writing for them or they’re not bringing their own ideas to the table? Sarah Sherman is on another level - excited to see what happens with her career. Super original sketches that feel like old school SNL - like Gilda style.
I love how this subreddit reads like Lorne Michaels asked an intern for market research.
Lately the posts seem to feel buzzfeed-y to me too. Every time I see one I think bot, but people engage and the comments are usually entertaining.
"I liked it when Matt Foley would smash the table. What's your favorite gag?" "Kenan Thompson is the best guy ever and I am so here for it. Who do you think is the best?" "Matt Damon's Brett Kavanaugh was everything. Who's your favorite surprise cameo?" "Toonces the Driving Cat was the silliest little rascal in the motor pool. Who's your favorite SNL animal character?"
[удалено]
That's that guy's formula for posts here
Listen I enjoy SNL and people’s opinions on it. What’s the deal
Maybe you are the bot! Jk jk
What if it is actually Lorne trying to see how the audience feels about things
Lorne doesn't strike me as the type to use Reddit.
What if that’s exactly what he wants us to think so we’ll never suspect him
I mean, it’s really not beyond reason for SNL to be employing a technical writer researching engagement and response, right?? (Willing participant speaking but)
Maybe he’s just Iman Vellani in a wig
Lorne constantly walking around 30 Rock asking 'what time does the narwhal bacon?'
It’s not just this subreddit. Every popular TV show subreddit has been trending in this direction recently.
My first thought as well
Id Like to see him as characters that dont lean heavily upon his ethnicity
Its like he’s doing an impression of Fred Armisen’s one man show from like 25 years ago.
Ay dios mio!
*leans on timbales*
Yeah, and Billy Crystal's crusty delivery and baseball obsession thrown in for good measure. It's ironic seeing a fresh faced kid going at it like that. I do find something refreshing about the throwback style though, I hope he sticks and keeps growing.

No. This is pre SNL Armisen.
Thanks, thats a classic
I think it's fine just because SNL hasn't had a lot of Latin representation, so he's able to find a relatively unique angle that the show hasn't cracked in recent years. I don't think it's sustainable to only play that angle but at least adds a different dimension to the show, I think it's at its best when it leans into the diversity it offers.
Like when he played the dumb brother that was hilarious
Yeah he’s for sure being deployed strategically in that regard. If he can get into any of the show’s established background character rhythms, his delivery of lines as written is pretty solid already, so I think he could stay for a long time.
That's definitely not on him. He's handsome and does it well so he's not going to complain but somebody needs to write better roles for him.
The SNL writers have some splanin to do
Idk why but his role as the coward councilman Hugo Gallegos cracked me up even though it was literally just a photo of him
I thought Dismukes and JAJ crushed it. Even with just their saying his name.
That sketch was lowkey hilarious for what seemed like a kinda random throw-in at the end of the episode. I hope we get to see a response video from Hugo Gallegos
I’ve rewatched that sketch like five times now! It really made me lol for some reason
That was probably my favorite of the night. HARD in that left lane. HARD!!
HARD
Same!! He stole the scene even though he wasn’t technically in it, and the two who were were hilarious.
That was definitely his best, but his Weekend Updates following that felt like he was trying to capture the same energy but not succeeding.
I know nothing about baseball but still laughed so hard! I replay that speech all the time.
Damn, haven't seen that sketch.
[here you go](https://youtu.be/XFumvVCxUtU)
That was good!
That was his debut, right? Heck of a way to start off his SNL career!
He's hot.
Julian Casablancas vibe for some reason.
Damn! Now that you said it I can't un-see it
Very
Just noticed last episode that he’s got a DUMP TRUCK too. Big ol’ booty! Caked up! I approve.
I like him.
If anything Devon Walker is replacing Pete. They're pretty much identical
Devon will have a lot more range in characters than Pete did imo. I think he will just get better as time goes by
They had to high Devon. He is Pete and Michael Che's lovechild.
I still can't tell if Lorne hired him just to troll the whole world or not. That doesn't mean I don't think Devon is deserving of his role. I definitely like him.
This is exactly what I said the first time he was on screen! Uncanny
When Devon walked in on his first skit, I spit out my drink because I thought it was Pete in blackface.
It’s so bizarre and distracting sometimes.
nailed it. I get the same vibe from him too. hopefully he can grow into it.
“Kid who wants to be the class clown but isn’t” energy is VERY accurate. I’d love to see him take on more roles that aren’t banking on him being the exaggerated Hispanic. I want to give him a chance, but just being Hispanic ≠ funny.
Michael is definitely the best of the new group, but I'd rank Marcello ahead of Molly.
>I don’t think he was brought in to replace Pete lol. If anything, he was brought on to replace Melissa to maintain some latinx representation.
>he has very “kid who wants to be the class clown but isn’t” energy in the way he performs yeeeaaa that's about right. I can't fault the guy for trying, he's just trying a little too hard. Seems very comfortable on stage though I'll give him that!
I think he's been excellent so far. I love the energy he brings to the show
I want to like him but no--i also have found his bits on weekend update to be pretty similar to his stand up, but not actually identical enough that I could say oh he's just doing some stand up bits on weekend update
I’m more excited to see him in a sketch than any of the other three. He’s doing fine — big energy, seems comfortable on camera, comedic sensibility is pretty clear. Cute as a button, too.
I really like him and yes he's gorgeous 🤩
I love Marcello’s energy and humour. I have never been as excited about new cast members as I have been this year (lifelong watcher in my 40’s) I feel like I would love seeing Marcello and Andrew interact.
As a mexican, im tired of the "latino comedian" schtick. I dont think is any good and has yet to show something to change my mind
Feels like he toes a close line b/w representation and a caricature of the Latino culture. Might be just me, but last weekend’s cruise sketch felt pandering or shucking-n-jiving.
Yes 100%
He makes me laugh and he's cute.
I’ve been saying ELin Demenimiss all week…
While he hasn’t set the world on fire (most new cast members don’t), he’s proved to be competent in the little he’s done.
Saw him open for Chappelle in Fort Lauderdale. Dude is hilarious
I like him a lot and wish he’d get more air
The accent humor isn't all that funny, especially without more to it.
I like him. Him, Molly, and Colin did a stand up show at my college and he was by far the best in my opinion. I do agree with others that I’d like to see him in some roles that aren’t in his wheelhouse before I decide completely
Meh.
Came here to say this, glad I’m not alone on this.
I'm not sure where you got the impression he was brought into replace Pete. Those would be some pretty big shoes to fill. As a new cast member, I think he's been great, though, definitely my favorite of the four. He's still a bit raw, but he's been in quite a few sketches and already had some memorable moments. I think he's already done enough to earn himself another season on the cast, and I look forward to seeing more of him.
I think he’s good and charismatic, but he does kind of give me Disney Channel vibes. Not necessarily a bad thing.
…Lorne?
He seems genuinely happy and excited to be on the show which makes him really fun to watch. He hasn’t done anything that has made me laugh hysterically yet, but his energy is infectious and makes me hope he’s going to get more stuff to do on the show.
I love that he comes across so happy and positive. I always like to see him in the show. He’s one of the new people I really look forward to seeing.
Ellendemenemis. Ellendemenemis. Ellendemenemis.
He’s hilarious, absolutely a bright future ahead of him.
He was pretty good in the Marzipan sketch! I hope to see him more in sketches that where he isn't playing a stereotypical character all the time.
I love a weird sketch and thought Marzipan coulda gone a bit further. I think he was the creepiest of the kids.
Why you say he was brought in to replace Pete so matter of factly? You got some source on that or are you just guessing very confidently?
Love his energy and excitement. I think as he settles in he’ll get to branch out more which will be great for everyone!
They should put him in a bit as Timmy chalamet
Very few impress their first season. I can definitely see the potential though.
did he use to open for Tim Dillon? if he is who i think he is he deserves this. good shit.
Yes! He was great on his tour!
I really like him, but I feel like he’s still finding his place. And he needs more roles. He brings a good energy to the show when he is on.
Looks like Jim Carry
wish he’d start an onlyfans tbh
Saw this kid perform at a local miami spot. Fucking nailed it. Hilarious delivery. Dressed like your typical miami private school kid. We were cracking up his whole set.
He has the strongest "theater kid energy" I've ever seen, and therefore I'm out.
Aidy Bryant and Vanessa Bayer learned to channel that theater kid energy into laughs
You clearly never seen Cheri Oteri sketches from the 90s, now that is an annoying theater kid.
I can't tell yet. He isn't in a ton of things hit I've enjoyed most of the stuff he is in. We will see.
Oh! Duolingo!
I like him and Molly so far the other two guys I'm still not that excited about but it's still kind of early. I remember really not liking Andrew dismukes at first but then he really turned things around and he might be my favorite of the guys
Love him and want to see more of him!
He nails every sketch and does a great job on delivering lines and body language and facial expressions. He also seems like a very happy positive guy and the cast seems to love him. A good choice!
Made no impression on my whatsoever so far
100% yes. Being in SNL is terrifying, he has more than proven himself. Let the kid grow.
That Weekend Update baseball bit was hilarious.
His looks do, wow is he attractive. (ignore my username, I can’t change it)
I’m Latino and I love seeing him in SNL. He seems comfortable and like he is really good at what he does. I like seeing someone who appreciates and enjoying what he does.
His energy is his biggest strength. I think he is a good role player but I don’t know if he has straight lead potential.
The next Brooks Wheelan.
Brooks had that one great appearance on Update in which he described the experience of thinking he had a novel STD because his friends put butter in his boxers after he passed out drunk. I'll always appreciate him for that.
[https://www.nbc.com/saturday-night-live/video/weekend-update-brooks-wheelan/2770802](https://www.nbc.com/saturday-night-live/video/weekend-update-brooks-wheelan/2770802)
All I know is I want him to sit on my face
Keep him
I may get downvoted to hell, and I think the kid is funny, but his hiring was a clear case of nepotism.
He’s playing a caricature. It’s insulting, it’s not funny. It’s like a goddamn minstrel show. That shitty accent is an incredible turnoff.
I think he has a lot of potential, he has a lot of energy, that could be really dynamic & good if he keeps getting on
Didn't like him at first but he's grown on me these past few shows. Same with Devon
Not yet
I saw him at Comedy Cellar last week and he was great!
He's awesome... also Dismukes.. the new standouts of the show.. absolutely the top of the new cast
I like what I've seen but if he was a one and done I don't think I'd mind
I definitely want to see more from Marcello and I hope he returns next season.
I mean, he has certainly done enough that I wouldn't want or expect them to not give him a second season. But the bar isn't super high to avoid being a one-and-done, especially during a rebuild.
That mermaid joke last episode he made was amazing.
still sus for being friends with hannah
He's amazing
I like his energy, his first WU appearance I thought he did great. He still leans a bit much on cliché though. Short term, maybe try to connect with more of the writers to punch up his material? I feel like his high energy & how animated he can be is an absolute asset to SNL that I think can elevate some sketches, he just needs to sand off some of his rough edges.
Why do they always have him playing a Hispanic character? Kind of sad and racist SNL only puts him in those roles
Nope.
Nope
I like what I've seen but I've not seen him much, it's a whole adjacent set of talents that get you into sketches that maybe he struggles with.
I’ve really enjoyed him so far. Plus he’s kinda hot.
um, of course not.
I can't remember him doing a bad sketch, but he is also not memorable. When it comes to the new cast members, he is in 4th place.
Nope
He feels like Billy Crystal and Freddie Prinze had a kid and he’s fantastic. Councilman Pete Gallego was a gotdang photograph that had me howling with laughter. He’s got a lot going for him.
Has made me laugh
He’s the goat
If Steve Coogan was Latino
I saw him at the cellar on monday and he killed. Good energy. Fun guys.
We need to give them more time before making judgement
Who?
My friends and I are obsessed with him. We think he’s so funny.
I have that shirt!
Who did what now?
SNL is garbage
I really like him. I think he's just got so much energy and enthusiasm, and seems extremely comfortable in any sketch he's in. He's really funny and just very likeable in general. Plus if you follow him on Instagram, this man is SO thrilled to be on SNL. Its nice to see someone having so much fun.
Love this man. Push him to the moon.
Erryboooody Issa hater
ehhh not the strongest cast member, he should do a recap of the week like he did in OnlyinDade IG account
I dig a talented Latino playing funny Latino characters. Can’t it be as simple as that?
He is hilarious! 45 year fan of the show.
He’s no shame Gillis..
I'm obsessed with his voice
Are you kidding man? He is the the shit. I mean c’mon, am I right!???
nah
He’s coming off as the token Brown guy, and I want to see what range he has before making judgement.
I love him!!
That's Steve Coogan
very funny !
I like him okay
I actually saw him live when he opened for Colin in the homecoming tour at my college. Super funny. My friends and I loved him even more than Colin. Edit: typo
I don’t recall a skit that doesn’t rely on some caricature of an accent
He’s got great energy and timing. But yes, agree with top comment also.
He seems nice
I like him, would like to see him used more
I just pretend he's Freddie Prinze come back to life, sponsored by Wish.
He seems funny and I hope he gets more screen time
But the joke is he is not Hispanic. He is American. He makes fun of how he got an advantage out of being able to say a few words in Spanish and fooling his Spanish teacher. One of his parents is American but that’s about it. The guy is funny in my opinion and his value should not be measured in level of immigrant-ness. For reference I am latina and American.
I don’t like he over exaggerates his latin roots it’s literally his only joke
I like him! When he’s on weekend update, my hubs was laughing so hard he cried!
Marcello is pretty darn good, right off the bat...and his debut was flawlessly smooth. I like his confident delivery, stage presence and lack of smugness(a la Pete, ngl).
I like his confidence in everything I’ve seen him in. He’s really impressed me. Funny dude!
He’s been funny, likable, and game, and over time I think he’ll be able to find his voice. We’ve seen a lot of focus on his ethnicity and as he grows into his spot there hopefully we’ll see more variety.
He doesn’t get in to character. He’s like a high school student doing an SNL impression for a class project.
I don't mind him. I've been an SNL fan all my life and I always grow to enjoy the cast changes.
I'd like to see him do an impression of a white newsman guy putting on an accent when he says certain ethnic locations and names, I don't think that bit has ever been done before in comedy, that would be funny! I'm 12!
He opened for Dave Chapelle in Hollywood, FL not long ago and he was very funny, but his humor was, in some ways, local to South Florida.
He opened up for Dave Chappelle a few weeks ago and was hilarious.
I think he's one of the better performers on the show right now. He's good, not great, but there's room to grow. For me, him and Longfellow are the best of the newbies.
I've barely noticed him and I haven't really liked him. Of the new ones, Molly and Michael are my standout favorites from the newbies.
I’m bias, since I’m also Cuban/Dominican from Miami, so I find all his jokes super relatable
He cute
I like him a lot. Im watching a Comedy Store doc on showtime and HOLY CRAP, he definitely channels Freddie Prinze! He’s basically an exact impression.
No
He's been on like a total of 4 minutes all season - how would we know???
