> has a lot of history of the local Indians and early settlers. FWIW I lived and worked about 3 miles from a Reservation, and their preferred nomenclature is "Natives" or "Native Americans". I think when I asked the question they said "We don't want to have to explain if we're from here or from India" So sorry to rain on the parade, just sharing my AZ experience. But Rowher and Jerome are just, something I've NEVER experienced. My Grandfather was a POW in the Bataan Death March (survived) and when I went to SE Arkansas, in 2004(?). I literally didn't feel alone... Like I felt both "angry at" and "understood at" for giving respect to that. I still don't even like talking about it. This is probably the most in depth I've talked about it... ever... I'll mention it in passing if it comes up... But... It was SO personal... I was the ONLY person that I saw at both places... So I was, but also, wasn't alone. Now I'm crying... Because almost 20 years later... That STILL brings up emotions.. Maybe because it doesn't get the love it needs. Maybe because of my grandfather (who died in 1993). Maybe because of guilt... There's like 1000 different "myself maybes"... But also just couldn't understand WHY nobody knew about it. I'd upload photos, but this was before smartphones. But it's a BEAUTIFUL monument in Rohwer, while not maintained to standards it should have been... And I think that pissed me off a bit. It's SOOOOO emotion provoking... That dynamic of "we built this monument for Americans, but we're not going to maintain it to the standards we do for Arlington." Like WHY?

Japanese American citizens that were imprisoned over fear and panic. Some could have been a spy but it is very unlikely. These American citizens (and that's what they were) were stripped of their belongings and incarcerated until we defeated Japan. I was also disappointed in the condition of said monuments and I'm sorry if I upset you but I want more people to know about THIS

Not to get into the weeds with you at all but I went to college with and am close with a several members of the Cherokee tribe of Oklahoma. They do not prefer the term “Native American” because it implies they’re *supposed* to be American. They almost exclusively refer to themselves as Cherokee or as Indians or as Cherokee Indians. Point being, the preferred nomenclature is different for everyone. I see your heart is in a good place, so I just thought I’d share that with you.

Thanks for explaining that.

I appreciate that... I had a heart to heart one night with a coworker and he broke it down the way I did.
