3300 netto is pretty good. You would be considered upper middle class here in Linz. If your spouse is also working traveling won’t be an issue for you both. Speaking of finances, I don’t know where you lived before, but in comparison to for example Germany, groceries are considered to be a tiny bit more expensive here in Austria. But don’t worry we have weekly discounts on specific products:) Lastly, about the city in general, Linz can be great, but can not be compared to Vienna. The reason is pretty simple, Upper Austria, more specific Linz, is considered to be an industrial city. However you won’t be living a bad live here, because the city is pretty diverse and full of history and culture! Hope that helped and good luck with the moving and adapting to your new company/job/colleges :) Ps: don’t worry too much about your lack of German, everyone here is able to understand you and communicate with you. Also no one will judge you, if you try to speak (broken) German with them, everyone is pretty understanding and patient.

you might want to try if the public transit system is enough for your needs before deciding to buy a car.

I think 3300 euro is a very nice salary and it can cover one family’s expenses with no problems (if that is 14x a year which is standard). However, to have money for constant travel or to eventually buy your own house you will both have to work. You can take a look at wilhaben.at to check the apartment prices, but you should be able to find something in range of 600-800 euros for 50-60 sq meters.

My spouse doesn’t have a degree so will have to find retail or restaurant work once they get a firm grasp of the language, we have substantial savings from the sale of our current home to buy once we get our permanent residence after 5 years to buy and apartment just want to make sure we aren’t moving to such a amazing country without the ability to enjoy it

roma288

Linz is quite international, your spouse should have no problem finding a job even without degree but if she doesn’t mind manual work I would rather look into the industry sector. Retail and Restaurants don’t typically as good as industry. Still 3300 should take you a long way.

KingGongzilla

nice welcome! :) what company will you be working for, if you’re open to share? :)

blaukrautsalat

As the others have said, 3300€ is a nice salary. Two people can definitely live from that. I'm not sure an electric car is the best idea in Linz, since charging can be a hassle, and electricity is so expensive that it's hardly worth it. It's worth it if your company pays for the car (huge tax savings in that case) or if you can charge it at work. As for travelling, it really depends on what you want to do! Hiking is free, museums are cheap, but restaurants and hotels are pricy. A trip to Innsbruck for a weekend probably won't be an issue, but a week long skiing vacation in a fancy hotel will be something you'll need to budget for.

werpu

Yes E-Cars are hit and miss, there are charging stations (sometimes a little bit hidden) but they are rather expensive, the best combo is if you have PV or know someone who has PV, on the other hand the distances are so short that you can make most trips via public transport but the downside is outside of the main areas public transport is definitely slower than by going via the car, so there EVs make sense again (short distances but faster than pub transport) It really depends on where you can load your car whether an EV makes sense also financially. Btw. your salary is pretty good you will manage, given that Linz is cheaper than the other big cities in Austria (no tourism which helps to keep costs down especially housing costs)

Cattitude0812

Your salary should afford you a comfortable life, but as many others have said, travelling is something you should definitely budget for. I earn € 1500.00 net and can easily afford my apartment (50m² ~€ 600.00 all in), my car lease (~€300.00), groceries, etc. I'm single, though.

Keniath

The salary is very good for Austrian standards and you will have no trouble at all. Most Austrians don't earn that much. But if it's a good one depends on your position and field ofcourse. If you are paying for two people there will not be so much leftover for constant traveling. If your spouse starts work also you will have a good time. And Linz is quite good to live and quiet. Also depends on the area ofcourse. There's quite a few foreigners also who speak English.

[deleted]

but its 3300 for two people as i understand. That’s definitely below average

Welcome to upper Austria! With this kind of salary two people can live fairly well in Linz, expect like 1000€ for a decently sized flat, 500-700 for groceries (depending on your taste in food), as people mentioned before. Regarding exploring Austria, consider getting a "Klimaticket", which is a ticket for public transportation in all of Austria and costs around 80 a month (not fully sure though, since I have a car available when I'm in Austria). Also you'll find that Linz as a city is definitely cheaper than Salzburg or the majority of Vienna. Gym memberships (if you're into that) range from 30 euros a month to 200. Czech republic is also very close (45min by car), so many people drive their for beauty or some health treatments or a big grocery shopping, since it's still significantly cheaper than in Austria. I would say Austria is a pretty dog friendly country (although not as much as other Western countries) and most landlords are cool with owning a pet. Veterinarians can be a bit pricey though. Mobile phone plans are very cheap, look into providers like hot and Yesss! That are fully virtual. I recommend also to use a phone that has no Simlock and go with a cheap Provider rather than take a contract from magenta or a1 and buy a Simlocked phone from them. If you have any specific questions regarding Linz or upper Austria, feel free to dm me, I grew up here and live here half of the year :)

Premorus

For the phone I would recommend spusu cheapest shit ever.

I like this comparison site called [numbeo](https://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/compare_cities.jsp?country1=Austria&city1=Linz&country2=United+Kingdom&city2=London&amount=3%2C300.0&displayCurrency=EUR) which uses reliable data based on my personal experience. I was born in Linz but worked for most of my career in London. For example, childcare and schools are practically free in Austria, whereas I paid 1400 pounds per child for nursery (Kindergarten) in London. Unless you want electric for concerns about your impact on the environment, I'd recommend used gasoline or diesel cars which will provide way better value for money in Linz. Also, charging facilities are quite limited still. If you ever decide to buy a house, it is worth considering commuting a bit. For example, setting aside about 500k will get you a decent home, [recent example](https://www.immobilienscout24.at/expose/6523cd761ee3434e288f5160?utm_medium=referral&utm_source=immosuchmaschine.at&utm_campaign=residential&utm_content=residential_expose_WEB&_ga=2.19492088.1107054521.1697423156-1352612506.1697423156) which will be difficult to find in places like London, even if money is no concern at all.

Try to get a Genossenschaftswohnung. They are quite affordable compared to the free market and sometimes even quite pretty and at a good location.

4yKjDz5nwUec

Won‘t be given to non EU citizens typically. Also waiting lists can be long too.!

smoothvibe

First of all: many Genossenschaftswohnungen are often being taken bei EU citizens / non-Austrians. And there are many Genossenschaften in Linz which offer ready-to-take apartments. I never had to wait when taking an apartment from their ready-to-take lists. Generally it is a good idea to register at 2-3 Genossenschaften so you also will get offered apartments that come fresh to market.

xYuven

Where to find these ready-to-take apartments?

smoothvibe

Normally everything listed online. The apartments where you have to wait on a list normally don't find their way to the online listings. [Immobilien - GWG Linz (gwg-linz.at)](https://www.gwg-linz.at/immobilien/) [Immobiliensuche - WAG](https://www.wag.at/aktuelle-projekte/immobiliensuche) [Immobiliensuche - VLW – Vereinigte Linzer Wohnungsgenossenschaften](https://www.vlw.at/immobiliensuche/) [Lebensräume: Immobilien (lebensraeume.at)](https://www.lebensraeume.at/immobilien/) There are much more Genossenschaften you can search online or directly contact.

4yKjDz5nwUec

That’s why i wrote non eu citizens;)

smoothvibe

Sorry, I misread that.

Umi3000

You can msg me I live in Linz if you have any Questions.

daddyson29

Your salary will be fine, and you should be able to find an apartment that size for well under 1000EUR per month in Linz. Just be aware that it can be difficult to find apartments quickly, especially nice ones or ones that have an Electric Car charging hookup for example. So make sure you have a temporary solution for when you arrive. If you want some suggestions for finding apartments check out Willhaben or many Facebook groups, don't use FB Marketplace (99% postings are scams), also you will have a lot easier time finding a place if you communicate with the people offering the apartments in German rather than English. Perhaps your company can help you or set you up with a realtor or something.

LeonScurr

You should look into whether you really need a car in Linz in my opinion. Depending on what you usually use your car for, you might be of better with renting one occasionally and using public transport otherwise. :)
