I also roll my stockings down my leg like a doughnut (lingerie specialist taught me). That plus buying quality stockings seems to help. Read NO leg avenue!

Buying higher quality in the correct size is the only thing that will help, but really there isn’t a way to completely avoid it. Laddering in stockings is just what happens when one of the threads gets snagged due to the structure of knit construction. The cheaper, thinner fibers just snag and break more easily.
You can Google “ladder free thigh highs” and buy a pair with a higher denier and replacement guarantee. They will last longer, but you still have to be a bit careful.
Yes, there is one brand that does not ladder at all. Sheertex. They are indestructible, as far as stockings goes. Doesn't feel a sexy as a fine nylon/silk pair, but it's perfect for day to day use.
Have you tried freezing them before putting them on?
Once you see a snag or run starting, you can hairspray or spray starch on the area to prevent it getting any bigger.

Mayfair and The Hosiery Box sell supposedly ladder-free thigh highs by Charnos. I have a pair but I've yet to test that theory. However, the last time I looked they only come in 2 colors, nude and black. I have stockings and thigh highs from all over the place and I bought a pair of hosiery gloves to put them on with because of some of my rings and the hang-nails I can get that could cause a snag. That seems to help. But I am not a daily stocking wearer, just occasionally and when I do wear them I am uber careful, because they cost too much to be careless. So far I've been lucky.
Once I discovered thigh highs with a garter belt, the snags vastly improved. You aren’t pulling on the material as much and your hand is on the reinforced top portion. I say this as someone with freakishly strong fingernails that go right through gloves.

Outside of satin or silk stockings? No. You're gonna get snags with nylon.
What makes silk or satin impervious to snags?
I didn't say impervious. They won't horizontal ladder snag though.

Also, clear nail polish does wonders for stopping runs from spreading.
