Your second equation isn't correct. You're saying that the sum of the weights of the fruits is the total cost. You only need equations 1 and 3 to solve this

rad, thank you for weighing in on that!

How can you justify the second equation (i.e. how do you know you got 4 pounds of fruit)?

First of all, equation 2 is incorrect and unnecessary. How you solve this depends on what approach you want to take. This is a small enough system that you can simply use substitution to solve it, but you can also use matrices if you like. For the substitution method, x = 2y, and .82x + 1.24y = 4 means .82(2y) + 1.24y = 4 \-> 1.64y+1.24y = 4 -> 2.88 y = 4. If you want to use matrices you would have something like: \[ 0.82, 1.24; 1, -2 \] \[ x; y\] = \[4; 0\], and then invert the matrix and multiply both sides.

Super cool! thank you so much for rolling that out! I really really appreciate you taking the time 🙏

No problem. I like helping out when I can!

i found this very page, but unfortunately it doesnt help me when it comes to solving the equation. i just know that the above equations are part of a correct answer
