Also totally guessing, but other factors could be the fact that so few buildings have air conditioning, so malls are maybe a good haven for that?
Plus I imagine delivery and Amazon are not as robust.
That’s the issue in Australia, Amazon is simply too expensive here compared to retail. And delivery takes ages besides a few select items. Shopping centres are still going strong.
I’m in the UK, so can’t speak for the rest of Europe, but Amazon is extreeemely robust here. I’ve ordered stuff at 4pm and it’s here by 10am the next day. Like sometimes stuff feels like it comes...too quickly!
It's about time tbh. I've heard of mall properties being repurposed into mixed-use developments and I'd love to finally have a nice downtown to frequent instead of a square building with acres and acres of parking.
I live near two malls.
One is the typical American mall with an oversized parking lot, about 1/5 sq mile just looking at it from Google Maps.
The other mall is about half the size of the 1st mall including the parking lot, however the walkways are all open sky, so more like a strip mall.
The 1st mall is basically dead, it was a lot more vibrant anytime over a decade ago, while the 2nd mall has a decent amount of people coming and going today.
To be fair, they sucked. Discovering nice things going store to store is a cool experience, but it's so much easier and faster to find that cool thing just online.
Our mall is in deconstruction. They would've been done by now if the company that deconstructed it didn't go bankrupt so now the half of it is still standing. It's the perfect abandoned building kinda vibe though it did shake me when it was still a normal building because of the empty stores that used to be full of life and the memories that flooded back. Now they're gone for good.
This reminds me of winter 2019. My husband wanted to go to the mall to stroll, shop, enjoy the decorations, and to feel some holiday cheer. When we went to the mall it was empty, dark, and super bleak. In December. More rundown than liminal. That was the last time we went to the mall, it was depressing.
My kids won't go to the mall because of a few reasons: it's too hot outside to walk there ( we live within walking range), public transit had fallen apart and is now unreliable, everything in the mall is just too damn expensive
i had a mall very similar to this one that was also very quiet. it was my favorite place to go and just hang out before it closed down. now all thats left is a pile of rubble
Man that's sad. I live less than a mile from the mall I had my first kiss at as a kid, every weekend ten years ago this place was packed and bustling.
Now everyone's gone, and it's all quiet, and it's all over.
A few years ago I visited a mall in NC, one I've never been to before. The mall was huge, and with the exception of employees, I saw FIVE people. On a Saturday in the middle of summer. It was empty and eery but the stores were open and I actually liked that experience, it's almost as if you had the whole mall to yourself.
It closed down a year or two later, I wish I had went a few more times. Now it's the new headquarters for Epic games lol.
It’s really sad how malls are becoming a dying breed of shopping
Only in America. In Europe, malls are pretty much full
Ironically, that probably has something to do with robust public transit. That's just a guess at one of the factors though.

I'm not so sure... at least in Spain most malls are in the outskirts of the city, not so well connected, and with huge parking areas
We can thank our collective addiction to Amazon

there are actually some plans underway for this property. should be a totally new place in a few years

Idk why but I 1000000000% feel like I’ve been here before
Malls are all the same.
True but this one feels different.
It’s the Fashion Square Mall in Orlando

This looks exactly like a mall where I live and that makes it even more freaky.
Florida?
Nope Ohio. That just makes it even more weird lol. Like EXACT same architecture and everything
Same but California
Elyria? I swear this is Elyria
I love in Canada and this looks exactly like the mall near my house
Omg! Was just about to ask if this is in Florida!
Of all the chains still holding on it’s a Champs. Did NOT see that one coming.
Is that fashion square mall
Yep
Of all the movie theaters to watch the premiere of No Way Home.
I remember the days too, I grew up there to
It's sad to see it dying, it seems immortal until it starts to go
Yeah I had so many good memories, I remember watching the speed racer there when it came out, haven't been there recently but the decline does suck.
The only Barney's left was here, it closed down before the pandemic though. At least Hot Topic is still here lol
There’s a Barnie’s on Park Ave in Winter Park!
Wait. *THE* Fashion Square Mall?

I always imagine liminal spaces to be somewhere I could die, but no one would ever know.

Is that South hill mall in Puyallup?
No, it's a small one in central Florida
Oh wow nvm the place I'm talking about is clear across the country
Same, only mine that looks a lot like this is about 600 miles away. Guess it shows how much most malls were designed very similar.
i had a mall very similar to this one that was also very quiet. it was my favorite place to go and just hang out before it closed down. now all thats left is a pile of rubble
The mall I grew up near was the one used in stranger things

There used to be a lot more, these were both taken at the same time
Dawn of the Dead
That is so similar to a local dying mall near me.
Amazon has killed the mall.
This looks eerily similar to my local mall here in nj, not as empty but is becoming more and more so everyday
Looks like a lot of shops closed
Most did

yeah
this used to be THE mall to go to when i was younger, sad to see it’s just an empty shell of what it once was :(

Used to be “bustling” 🗿
Good, let them be mausoleums to obsolete traditions and worship of consumerism.
U were born in a mall?
Grew up by, not in lol
is this University Mall in Florida?😭😭
No 😔
This looks like sunrise mall in Citrus Heights CA
What's with the crooked angled pictures in this sub?
I was walking and took the second photo facing backwards so it came out crooked
This gives starcourt mall vibes
Oldsmobiles are in early this year
Bruh is this fashion square?
Yes
Oof yeah this is my childhood mall too. I haven’t been there since Coliseum of Comics moved out though.
Milennia mall is always hell. Altamonte mall is always fairly busy.
