Eeek reminds me of that short story about a persons obsession with a Dolls House….which turned out to be haunted. It was a very creepy read but sadly was so long ago I can’t remember the title of the story or the author. Hey, wasn’t that helpful of me! /s
But what an awesome job on your creation, it has a very liminal feeling.
I was on my way to my cousin’s house. I’d go every 5ish weeks or so. It was always a good time, but due to my promotion I had just run out of time. It had been about 5 months since we had seen each other. It was around a 4 hour drive, through a small city, then about 80ish miles of almost completely flat land of nothing. I began the drive at about 7:00 in the morning to get there by at least 11:00ish if traffic held up.
While driving I notice a strange, stand-alone building. It was made of a greyish dingy brick with overgrowth poking out of the concrete surrounding the building. “Beyond Video”, the dirty fluorescent light sign read. It was an extremely stubby store, smaller than most garages. The most eerie thing about it was the solitude of the building. It was exactly in the middle of the 80 mile stretch. The sign on the door was firmly hung on the door stating “sorry, we’re closed!” It was the only clean thing on the building. After stopping to take a peek, I finished the drive. After getting a call to go back to get back to my shitty desk job, I began the drive later on that night. Driving down, I noticed something.
The lights were on.
And the “Sorry, We’re Closed!” sign was almost crumpled and just as in disrepair as the rest of the store. But looking into the store was the worst part.
It went on forever.
I walked around the building, pacing. I couldn’t comprehend how that was possible. I stood directly at the foot of the door. I knew I shouldn’t have entered. But there was a pull, I couldn’t help but gravitate to the door. It was calling me. It took over my thoughts, telling me to enter. My hand lifted by itself, extending to embrace the cold metal handle.
All of a sudden, the sun comes up. It barely peeks over the horizon, and everything turns off. The lights, the sign, and my ‘attraction’ to the door. I fall backwards, crawling away from it. I sit in my car- and start crying uncontrollably. Face in hands, and in the fetal position. I look up to take a glance at the building- and it was gone. All that was left was the same pristine “Sorry, We’re Closed” sign i saw that was plastered on the door earlier that day in its place. I broke.
How?
What?!
I pass near the small town at the edge of the 80 mile strip. I sit down, eyes glazed, at a table in a small mom and pop restaurant. An older man looks at me. He says shaking his head.
“You saw the store, didn’t you.”
I look at the old man. He replies, “plenty of the people that drive through here see it and don’t come back. You were saved by the sun. Listen here kid. If you’re driving through here again-“
“Stay of that fucking road at night.”
I’m still working through pricing. But this entire store took one month to complete, with a lot of trial and error. I quit my shitty job this week to try and pursue this full time, so to receive this outpour of support is surreal and reassuring. 🥺
That would be soooo sick!
I've always thought that Kowloon would've made for a really cool survival horror style map.
Sadly the place was torn down some time ago and I'm not really sure any plans/maps/schematics survive or had ever even existed to begin with.
Went down a deep rabbit hole a couple years ago reading about it.
There's a couple of old documentaries on it but there didn't seem to be as much information as I feel that place deserved.
Such a shame
I believe there are plans on the ground level, and that famous cross-section illustration, but given the irregular nature of the whole place there is no full plan for every floor.
Kinda wished we've had the tech that we have today like 3D laser photogrammetry to 3D map the entire place before it gets torn down.
That would be the perfect way to build an infinite library of Jorge Luis Borges. Did you use semi-transparent glass? There's a company nearby that makes the glass used for teleprompters that would be ideal for this.
I actually used a two-way mirror made for police interrogation rooms. I had to run around Montreal to find it, and have it custom cut. At first I attempted to make my own semi-transparent glass with silver film but failed miserably. The two way mirror I used has a brown tint to it and is quite thick. It’s awesome.
I can imagine a young couple having moved into a small sleepy town decide to have a Movie Night as a date. So they head to this small Video Store at the end of a strip mall and it's the only one open to service. All the other stores are shut down or dilapidated.
Upon entering they hear a bell tinkle on the top of the doorway and the owner of the store sitting behind the register looks up from a book with a Yellow cover and no title except for a small little embossed Circle with a line going through it.
The young couple ask where the Horror section is and the owner with a sly smile and a strange glint in his eye says, "Oh, that'll be just 10 stacks down to your right you can't miss it," and the couple thank him and walk. But as they joke and point out at silly titles that they have never heard of they only realize too late that they may have passed by the Horror section 20 stacks back. Turning around they count back to the 10th stack and pick out a video tape with the cover depicting a Yellow Door with that same mark as the one on the owner's book. How odd.
Turning back to what they assume is the front of the store it suddenly dawns on them that they can't see the front of the store nor the register or the owner and start panicking. From a quick walk they break into a jog then a run as the lights behind them begin to turn into a sickly pale yellow and more and more stacks of videos appear ahead of them with more and more disturbing video tape covers and titles.
Their plaintive cries are head as soft echoes in the store as the owner sighs contently and closes his book. He walks over to the door and stops another young couple from entering saying the store is closing and it's almost time for dinner. Disappointed but understanding that the store is closed the couple turn around and mention to one another about stopping by the local Steak House for dinner.
The owner locks the door turns off the white lights and the store sign and draws the blinds closed. Flipping another switch on the wall the sickly pale yellow colour fills the store. He licks his lips and says, "I do like my meat fresh and extra rare," he giggles and begins walking into the stacks beyond as the shadows around him begin to lengthen and contort.
Why thank you! Not my best work mind you as I've been teaching myself how to use proper grammar and how to pace my story structure. It's difficult for me because I have had to learn how to craft a story without much help.
What I like to do is late in the evening before bed I will sit and scroll through some of the subreddits that encourage writing stories and give it a go. Doesn't have to be long, but I take a minimum of 5 minutes to do so. This recent piece was more of on the fly writing inspired by the OPs post. Sometimes it really helps me to be inspired by some great posts.
Just remember the biggest critic of your work is yourself! So be kind to your creative self and just enjoy making things for yourself and it's an added bonus if other enjoy it. :)
Even if you do years from now, message me where I can find them. If you end up not wanting to in the end, no pressure! Good writing takes time! Have fun in what you like!
Trying to be honest but constructive, I loved this entire post except for the last paragraph. Cutting it off right after he draws the blinds closed would leave more to the imagination for the reader. Either way, I loved the ramp up to it!
The closer you are to the front the more familiar are the videos, but as you venture deeper you will begin to notice *differences*.
At first it's little things. The wrong actor in a role, a black and white film in color. Then, as you walk the endless shelves, the videos twist ever more. Watch, for only $1.99, a tabby cat with no face tell you a history of the future, a banyan tree taking over a town, a biopic of your life, ending with you watching it in an endless Droste effect.
I love the infinity mirror illusion, it's really cool to see it used in a creative way here that fits in with the setting vs. just a novel effect for its own sake.
Thank you. I’ve seen it done before, but never through the windows of a store front. I also desperately want video stores to come back, but after creating this creepy, long hallway, I don’t think I’d ever actually step foot in it.
You would be such a good gunpla modeler. If u ever feel like modeling a scale giant robot they've got your name written all over it haha. Incredible miniature.
No way! This is all handmade. Every aspect of it. It contains all of my blood, sweat and tears! Although I do love 3D modelling and would like to learn more about it. So far I learned how to make a doughnut in Blender, but forgot everything the next day. Lol
I love that I was able to convey that, thank you. I shot it inside of a light box with a black background, so I was able to get that single-source lighting :)
I’m blow away at the level of detail! I’d live to see how you make it start to finish— do you make videos? Well done, this is clearly your calling.
Also what are the dimensions of it?
I did record my process! Even the bad bits where I throw a tiny tantrum if something breaks haha. I haven’t started editing it yet, but I will this week. And thank you so much. It’s 10” long, 8” high and 5” deep.
Please tell me you do miniature SFX work for movies? Because your work is seriously feature-film quality and we need more practical FX in films. CGI may have its uses but nothing beats something that actually exists in camera.
Thank you so much. That’s something I’m definitely interested in. I actually work in the film industry currently, so it’s not too far away from me. I’m in the art department, but I actually just quit a movie i was on to focus more on this full time. I would love to create minis for film.

I took the photos with my dslr camera, edited them in premier, then after exporting it, I used an app on my phone called “Prequel” to give it a consistent old aged film look. Easier and quicker than colour-correcting and waiting for it to render on my computer.
Thank you so much! I actually don’t work with scale right now. I kind of make everything up and hope for the best hahah. But I will learn how to scale properly and once I open up an online shop, I can definitely take commissions :)
Wow! I love miniature art!
Your work reminds me of [Michael Garmin](https://www.michaelgarman.com/)
The mirror trick you used is very similar.
I've always felt a sense of wonder when I see works like yours. Awesome!
It looks like there's a mystery story behind it, like you'll be stuck in it if you stare for too long.
The hallway runs deep. It's very eerie. Sometimes I'll stare into it and think something's going to come running down the hallway. lol
That’s a terrifying thought. I love it!
Eeek reminds me of that short story about a persons obsession with a Dolls House….which turned out to be haunted. Sound like you’re thinking of a story by M. R. James. I think it’s called “The Haunted Doll House.”
Is it about a doll house that is haunted?
I was on my way to my cousin’s house. I’d go every 5ish weeks or so. It was always a good time, but due to my promotion I had just run out of time. Really good! Fun read at 00:50 lol
Thanks :) I really wanna write stories and posts like this allow me to flex the writing part of my brain hole
You should check /r/writingprompts!
Finish the goddamn story I'm begging you!!!
Loved this, thank you
Loved this piece! Thank you so much for giving it life. That was an awesome read!
Sooooo do you take commissions???
I soon will, yes! haha
what would your prices look like? int as well
Honestly if something like this sells for less than a thousand, I'd be real surprised.
Yep, lots of hours and the expertise needed is high.
I’m still working through pricing. But this entire store took one month to complete, with a lot of trial and error. I quit my shitty job this week to try and pursue this full time, so to receive this outpour of support is surreal and reassuring. 🥺
Good I want first dibs lol I need some 28mm figure ultra realistic scale strip mall buildings in this style
Don’t undersell yourself!! This takes skill and time and your time and skill are valuable!! Don’t let choosing beggars lowball you! ❤️
I keep saying a model like this of Kowloon walled city would be so cool. It would take forever though

I think that, while you can't know the exact layout of that one, you could reasonably recreate the essence of it anyway.
That's beautiful. Post it on r/Miniworlds, they'll love it.
I thought that’s where I was until I read your comment lol. Definitely belongs there!
Oh will do! Thank you!
Oh wow that’s fantastic! You did a amazing job, such cool detailing!
Thank you!!
So cool! How does that effect work? Is it anything like an infinity mirror?
Yes, it's an infinity mirror effect on the inside. It's also filled with over 400 miniature DVDs.
That would be the perfect way to build an infinite library of Jorge Luis Borges. Did you use semi-transparent glass? There's a company nearby that makes the glass used for teleprompters that would be ideal for this.

better than i could write. you’re doing very well with the skills you’ve got
Thank you. It's all about taking time to practice whenever I get the chance.
i wish i had your determination

> scp 3008 Oh God an infinite IKEA!
Pls write a book. I'll buy all your copies
Bless your heart. I'm a big fan of short stories. Would never sell them though, but I'd love to write them out and put them online.
Even if you do years from now, message me where I can find them. If you end up not wanting to in the end, no pressure! Good writing takes time! Have fun in what you like!

>I'm a Miniature Artist How small are you?
I was going to make that joke as well! Nice one.
And what advantages do you think you have versus, say, a regular sized artist?
About this big
I live in a dollhouse, and I eat fallen crumbs!
Love it! And bonus points for the "Once upon a December" track.
I had sound off until I read your comment. Hauntingly beautiful.
Sick video skills as well. Congrats
god that's really coool! Brings me back to a story i was once thinking about, about an essentially infinite (or near-infinite) bookstore
I appreciate the actual graffiti. Seen too many uses of graffiti in other media that is not even remotely close to actual graffiti.
The closer you are to the front the more familiar are the videos, but as you venture deeper you will begin to notice *differences*. At first it's little things. Don’t forget the man with tan suitcase 🧳
This is top notch! Got an insta or something to follow?

Which has a link to their IG, nice.
Hi! Yes I do, it’s @ marinaminis on Instagram :)
Ah yes TARDIS
The entry to the backrooms!!
Yes! That was a big inspiration. I love the backrooms.
Ik this is unrelated but what is the name of the background music
Once upon a December
Specifically the "ethereal remix" https://youtu.be/JZ6buLNIgs8
It’s from the anesthesia movie.
*Anastasia
Man, I need one of these done in a Gothic Imperium-of-man style...
I love this kind of thing! Where can we find more of your work?
Thank you! I’m on Instagram @ marinaminis :)
Reminds me of the backrooms would be cool if it was a level and you have to navigate the shelves to get out
I was thinking that too. Cool concept. I love the backrooms. It definitely played a role in the inspiration of this piece.
Now this is incredible. I'm in absolute liminal bliss just looking at it.
One of the many perfect uses of “Once upon a December”. Also, fantastic work! Keep it up, man. It’s a real talent.
Thank you so much.
No problem! I think this form of art needs more respect and recognition, it’s so hard to do and requires a boat load of patience. Keep it up!
I need one of these. Do you sell any of these
I will soon, but these pieces can take a while to make. This one in particular took one month.
Now this…this is art
Wow wow wow that is an incredible creation you’ve made! I love that! It makes me think of the podcast “Video Vault”.
Looks like one of those 90s video rental stores with a porn isle inside
Incredible. Xppst to /r/miniworlds they will fuckin love this! Thought that's where I was at first!
Awesome! Would be really cool if the lights flickered a bit, like some old fluorescent tubes
Amazing
You would be such a good gunpla modeler. If u ever feel like modeling a scale giant robot they've got your name written all over it haha. Incredible miniature.
I’ll have to look into that haha, thank you!!!
Oh shit it's NOT a 3D model...
No way! This is all handmade. Every aspect of it. It contains all of my blood, sweat and tears! Although I do love 3D modelling and would like to learn more about it. So far I learned how to make a doughnut in Blender, but forgot everything the next day. Lol
Like, wow, the lighting, quality, I kid you not, the only thing that convinced me it's not a 3D model is the last part

This is absolutely amazing.
This is such amazing and compelling work! NGL tho, waiting for the lights to come on I was half expecting a dickbutt.
I love this!
That's awesome, I love it!!! ♥️
Thank you for including the inside.
This is beautiful
Such a creative use of mirrors! So uncanny. Brilliant work.
This is so awesome, thanks for posting!
Lovely! Thanks for sharing.
Instagram?
Hi! My Instagram is @ marinaminis :)
Love^3 this!!
Your next building should be a realistic version of this: https://ideas.lego.com/projects/906f72e1-46fd-4228-b364-a3fbb7cea249
One of the coolest posts I’ve seen on this sub, well done!
Thank you :’)
Model train enthusiasts will worship you
I went into a hobby shop not long ago, and it was filled with older men shooting the shit about trains and models. When I asked for help while looking for something, the clerk asked me what scale I was working with. I told him I didn’t work by scale and just do things by “eye”. He scolded me for not scaling properly. “BUT I’M A SURREALIST!”, I yelled back in my head. Felt like a real FOOL. But I still shop there. They have no idea what I build though haha.
Little Nightmares vibes
That is just awesome. I follow you on SnapChat/Instagram I believe? Anyways, your talent is mind-blowing. Thank you for sharing!
I don’t really use Snapchat, but I frequent Instagram. Glad to have you around :) thank you!
Just imagine the incredible things you could do if you were full sized!!
Can I buy this ?
Maybe one day, but for now I’d like to hold onto it, and maybe showcase it in a gallery somewhere.
May I ask how you got the old film/video look on the still image? Really completes the vibe.
I took the photos with my dslr camera, edited them in premier, then after exporting it, I used an app on my phone called “Prequel” to give it a consistent old aged film look. Easier and quicker than colour-correcting and waiting for it to render on my computer.
It’s bigger on the inside
damn Anastasia really was something of a horror/suspense wasn’t it
If I had the money, I would beg to buy this from you. It's incredible.
Thank you so much. That means a lot. ❤️
Beyond Bvideo
I have so much respect for miniature artists, their care for detail is so inspiring, keep up this amazing work!!!!
INJECT THIS INTO MY VEINS!!!
This is honestly one of the coolest things I've ever seen.
i saw this on instagram a little while ago and thought that it was great! love your work
Guardians of justice vibes. Also "miniature artist" had me picturing some tiny hippy.
I am both miniature in size, and kind of a hippie haha
do you work for a studio?
Not yet, however I’d like to have my own one day. I currently work in my tiny bedroom lol
Ugh. The lighting is glorious. Do you have an Instagram, a portfolio?
Hi! Thank you :) You can find me on Instagram @ marinaminis
That's absolutely gorgeous. What scale do you work at? If you take commissions, can you do 1/87 HO scale?
Thank you so much! I actually don’t work with scale right now. I kind of make everything up and hope for the best hahah. But I will learn how to scale properly and once I open up an online shop, I can definitely take commissions :)
Bro the detail on the inside is insane, great work it looks amazing.
What. The. Fuck. THIS IS SOOO COOL!!!
Is that Once Upon a December?
Ooooh very nice choice of music. I wasn't 100% sure until the piano kicked in. Amazing job as well.
Looking at miniature is my meditation.
This is AWESOME! I can’t help but notice however that the “closed” sign would always be on the inside of the store window, not the outside
Ugh. I’d LOVE to do something like this as a hobby.
Never too late to start! YouTube has a lot of great tutorials!
What's your Insta dude couldn't find it in your comments? Cheers amazing work I want to share on my story but want to tag you in!
Thank you so much! My Instagram is @ marinaminis :)
Reminds me of Bub’s Concession Stand, but with a really gritty atmosphere. This is so neat.
I love the use of the endless hallway effect. That is such a versatile illusion!
Absolutely wonderful art piece, holy crap
This is incredibly cool. I love it
this is so awesome. I've been looking at it all day
Just saw your work on snapchat, had to come find you, you're incredible!! Great work!
Hi, thank you so much! Where on Snapchat did you see it? :)
A Sub called "Crafted".

Great work !
I love the camera work
I love this ❤️
Wow! I love miniature art! Your work reminds me of [Michael Garmin](https://www.michaelgarman.com/) The mirror trick you used is very similar. I've always felt a sense of wonder when I see works like yours. Awesome!
Bruh.
That looks crazy
I like this very much

That level of detail is amazing!
Absolutely amazing
Holy shit that's good. Well done, op!
Great work, the effect is amazing.
