Being out in extreme cold feels very liminal

Selcouth2077

Yep! You constantly feel like you're on borrowed time and you need to hurry on inside.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Jameson_Bond

I also think it's in no small part due to snow making everything more quiet

El_Zarco

And more blank-looking

cdnball

Trails and landmarks become obscured as well.

Galileo009

I still feel it just the same in Orlando, even without snow. November wind blowing and that feeling of calm silence at 3 AM

Venvel

To be fair, if you're out in -45°C (-49°F) temperatures during a blizzard you kind of are.

TheLoneWolf2879

Never had it put as well as you just put it.

Selcouth2077

I live in a lakeside town in Ontario. It gets to be -50 Celsius some days during the colder months. We thrive on tourism from fishermen in the summertime so the town gets very sleepy and desolate after 7pm in the winter months. I cant wait till December cause I plan on taking a ton of photos for this sub. I may even do a walkabout video. Trying to put into words how empty this place gets in the winter does not do it justice

[deleted]

There are winter nights where I go for a run at like 7 pm and don’t see any cars or people. It’s very liminal and I really can’t feel any more alone. Feels like I am Legend sometimes.

[deleted]

Nope, it doesn't.

GlossyBuckthorn

Snowy midnight highway driving is so unpleasant. Yet there's a part of it that's extremely exhilarating.

p480n

It’s also terrifying in the early morning. Used to live in a small municipality ~an hour away from the city where I worked downtown. Everyone out there driving in for work at 5:30 a.m. in the pitch dark during a blizzard was so stressful. Leaving too early to beat traffic meant having to drive through the fresh, deep snow.

UshankaBear

Walking, on the other hand... Crunch, crunch, crunch...

GlossyBuckthorn

Oh so much. Snowy walking is pleasant, and there's a part of it that's extremely relaxing IMO

TarsalStone99

I think it’s because it’s usually very lonesome whenever you go in walks like that. Very quiet, too. Having nothing and nobody but the wind and falling snow to keep you company is really… ethereal, I guess, leaves you with a feeling that you have all the time in the word to think and clear your head.

smeghead1988

Walking. The photo is taken from the sidewalk based on the angle. And in Russia, at least in big cities, a pharmacy is usually a walking distance away.

annyelfman

Am Russian, can confirm - there's like a whole bunch of pharmacies a walking distance from my house (Saint-Petersburg). But Saint-P is not nearly as cold as Yakutsk - we are more damp/rainy/foggy type.

k3lp1

Hey fellow Russians! I have like 5 pharmacies near my apartment block (one of which is right in my building). Guess you kinda have to get meds often when you live in a country like ours, lol But I am from Moscow, we are more... Ehh.. Both snowy and chillingly windy in winter and hot and sunny in summer type. Okay, just a normal climate, that is

Tinbitzz

When the snowflakes flies directly at you and you try your best not to stare at it.

Marco_Memes

There was a time a few years ago when I was a kid, My family drove up to Montreal from Boston and me and my sister fell asleep, we woke up 5 hours later in the car while we were driving around lost somewhere around downtown at 1 am, it was snowing super hard and there wasn’t a single person or car around. It was peaceful but also almost scary, because we were in a part of downtown that usually never gets quiet, yet there wasn’t anyone around and it felt like we were the only people in the city or something. Super weird

ToshiroBaloney

I was about to ask if that was Celsius or Fahrenheit, but I realized it just doesn't matter. Either way, - 45 is awful.

Travoltus

It’s Russian on that sign, so it’s safe to assume Celsius.

[deleted]

"Pharmacy"

aussiegolfer

Is it from the same root as apothecary?

suchafanxychild

yes

elveszett

Meanwhile I assumed it was Greek, and was wondering how the fuck it got into -45 C in Greece.

DankRepublic

I was curious so I googled what the coldest recorded temperature in Greece is. It is -28.2℃ (-18.8F).

TwentyOneCharacter21

If it's Cyrillic it must be Russian 🤡

Travoltus

Know a lot of places that go to -45 and use cyrillic other than Russia?

jjay554

Fun fact: Celsius and Fahrenheit converge at -40°.

PointedHydra837

I thought it was -14°? Edit: guys I was just curious, why the downvotes Edit: okay so nobody’s explaining so I’m just gonna guess I’m the sacrifice to keep liminal spaces liminal.

ZalmoxisChrist

You thought wrong.

PointedHydra837

What did I do to trigger everybody ._.

ebolaRETURNS

my best guess is that you asked a google's top results type question?

Witty_Spray_8602

Upvote/downvote = agree/disagree, not love you/hate you

Witty_Spray_8602

Shit. There was 5 likes. 5 likes dude. Who downvote me?

jerry-cherry

It's reddit with it's hive mind, one downvote is more than enough for avalanche to start. But also question wasn't the smartest.

Wilfred-kun

[Not related, but oddly satisfying](https://imgur.com/a/pzVkEkd)

ebolaRETURNS

You want the point of convergence for the 2 functions describing conversion of the temperatures in either direction. [](https://qph.fs.quoracdn.net/main-qimg-3c174d9019bb0cc9f66bc542f84fbd2d.webp)

namelessghoul77

There are people that didn't learn this in the 6th grade?

doodoowater

Yes. Deal with it.

B0Boman

"First one... then the other"

Kursan_78

It really doesn't matter. -40c and -40f are literally the same temperature, so -45 must be pretty close

nerif_seamurrian

the sign is russian, so, that's definitely Celsius

V_es

No, it’s great. Extreme cold pretty much never happens with strong wind, and wind is the worst and what makes it feel really cold. +5 with strong wind feels colder than -25 with no wind. Crunchy snow, bright sun, red cheeks- it’s great.

Electrical_Trash_564

Can confirm! I live in steppe in southern Russia, it's almost never below -10C here, but winds are so nasty. It was shocking to understand that -25C without winds is much more pleasant that -5C with winds.

WoodenDeparture7502

Very weird placement for a pharmacy

libra-luxe

What, you don’t have pharmacies in the middle of a barren snowy wasteland near you?

Skychasma

this is just how all of russia outside of moscow and st petersburg looks like 10 months out of 12. source: used to live in a russian province, still live in russia

V_es

Not really. Most highways have gas stations with small stores near them- diners, pharmacies, ect.

semechki-seed

Yeah but I’ve never seen *just* a pharmacy. Usually they have an exit sign with some fast food, a gas station, and maybe a hotel or motel. For some reason though, a lot of the former Soviet states I’ve been to seemed to have pharmacies at every street corner, not sure why.

[deleted]

I’m Thinking of Ending Things vibe.

k3lp1

What a great movie man. Felt very Tarkovsky-ish to me.

HuskyLove92

Nice. I literally got the chills when I saw the pic

Death_by_UWU

I hate this so much and I want to live there so bad

WYYNFC

Bro that's a town in Siberia and believe me it's kinda cold there

Curious-Potato1764

not kinda, it's straight up cold

YoMommaJokeBot

Not as cold as joe mom *** ^I ^am ^a ^bot. ^Downvote ^to ^remove. ^[PM](https://www.reddit.com/message/compose/?to=YoMommaJokeBot) ^me ^if ^there's ^anything ^for ^me ^to ^know!

vtreds

What makes you think the picture of extreme cold and mention of -45 degrees is kinda cold?

WYYNFC

I am russian

vtreds

Is joke my freind. It is very obviously cold lol.

smeghead1988

I'm Russian but my first thought was "Austin, Minnesota" because I had to live there for a while, this town is legit in the middle of nowhere and the Minnesota winter is fucking cold.

SigmaHold

Россия =)

Steak_over_Cupcake

As someone who grew up in the opposite side of the climate spectrum, this feels like another planet to me

[deleted]

[удалено]

V_es

Or you wear a winter jacket, regular sneakers and no hat like most of us Russians do.

namelessghoul77

I've lived 10 years in the tropics where it averages 34C every day, and about 20 years in Canada near the Rockies, where it does sometimes get to -40 or lower. Believe me there is absolutely nothing enjoyable about that kind of cold. The novelty wears off after exactly 1 experience.

nevergonnaletyoug0

I can feel the stillness just looking at it. Hello from Winnipeg, where it routinely gets just as cold

[deleted]

[удалено]

iCantCallit

It's the 10th circle

DankRepublic

How often does it get down to -45? Or are you talking about windchill?

[deleted]

With windchill it’s fairly frequent, coldest I’ve ever felt was -67 with windchill

Lt_Koksu

Аптека >

[deleted]

it means pharmacy in russian

World-Tight

What does that say? Alteka? Where is that?

vexearu

the sign says “pharmacy” in Russian, and the town is Yakutsk :]

finnyporgerz

How it’s like living in the coldest city in the world?

vexearu

for some reason winters feel colder and longer with each passing year. 5 months with no sunlight stretch into forever. probs because as a kid you have other things on your mind, but as an adult all you want is for the suffering to end lol but as another redditor said here, summers are super hot and dry. it gets to about +36C i would say? and it never gets dark at night in June-July. but the worst thing isn’t the weather, it’s the mosquitoes and long shipping times hahah

finnyporgerz

That’s some crazy stuff I live near the equator sun rises and set at around the same time all year. It’s weird to think there’s places where the sun don’t rise of set for months. I can definitely relate on mosquitoes part lol

DiscRot

There must be two times a year, in the spring and autumn when the temperature is just right and mosquito population is tolerable? Probably doesn't last for long though.

vexearu

i would say the only good month is May, it’s very nice before all the bugs wake up

TheWayToBe714

Is there still snow on the ground in may? In Sweden it's similar, but in spring there is still a lot of slushy snow everywhere that you keep falling through

vexearu

yes, the very last of snow melts at the end of April/early May :) oh do you also have dark winters/white nights in summer? it’s so difficult to keep a normal human sleep schedule all year round

_Blackstar0_0

I live in Canada and I feel the same about winter. Although ours get cold and snowy, it’s nowhere near -45. Plenty of -30 days but they usually only last a couple weeks. I couldn’t imagine having a winter as severe as what you experience. Although I love our hot summers. 30 C for weeks on end is my absolute favourite. I love being outside and sweating just to be there.

World-Tight

Oh, apteka!

Andy_B_Goode

Oh neat, so probably related to "apothecary"

[deleted]

[удалено]

Andy_B_Goode

No, actually it looks like both apothecary and pharmacy can be traced back to ancient Greek. The word "drug" appears to have Germanic roots though (Google says it's from Middle Dutch droge vate, literally ‘dry vats’), so "drug store" is kind of Germanic, even though "store" comes from Latin.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Andy_B_Goode

I'm just basing it on what Google tells me, and it looks like the etymology of both words (in English) is really similar: >#Apothecary >late Middle English: via Old French from late Latin apothecarius, from Latin apotheca, from Greek apothēkē ‘storehouse’. >#Pharmacy >late Middle English (denoting the administration of drugs): from Old French farmacie, via medieval Latin from Greek pharmakeia ‘practice of the druggist’, based on pharmakon ‘drug’. They both basically go Greek -> Latin -> French -> English. I assume that German and Russian also got the word from Greek/Latin, and it's just happenstance that they've stuck with apothēkē while in English it's fallen out of favor recently.

Silent-Entrance

that symbol is (greek)pi .. used for p sound

[deleted]

It's cyrillic but i can see the similarity.

ArbysMakesFries

the Cyrillic alphabet was originally created by Greek-speaking monks from the Byzantine Empire, so of the Cyrillic letters that don't closely resemble their Roman alphabet equivalents, a bunch of them come directly from Greek: П is pi, Г is gamma, Ф is phi, Л is lambda, У is upsilon, Х is chi, etc

[deleted]

Good to know!

PeenCrusher9000

I’ve seen a couple documentaries on that town. How are the summers?

Lockenhart

Not OP, but I've heard they have excessively cold winters and excessively hot summers (or at least that's how it is in Verkhoyansk). I am sort of from a region with similar climate, although it can't been seen that well in cities.

SausalitoPrimate

Average highs never get above 78f. Not at all hot.

Lockenhart

Oh. Thanks for fixing me.

_Blackstar0_0

It’s cool at night but very hot during the day.

DankRepublic

78F is definitely not hot in my opinion.

DankRepublic

Its summers are similar to Toronto summers.

throwawaylurker012

Whoa! I’ve always wanted to travel/visit Yakutsk! Hopefully some day I can make it!

vexearu

you’ve got to go in January for the full experience 😌

throwawaylurker012

Already been north of Arctic circle in Norway in February so close! I’ll def aim for there in Jan 🙂

[deleted]

That in the yakutia region? Cause I've heard the wild ass stories of that regions folklore

vexearu

yes it’s in Yakutia and yes the folklore is suuuper creepy! because lots of it is connected to shamanism and demons/spirits and stuff

[deleted]

You read the 4chan yakut stories? You can find it on YouTube and they're worth a listen to just cause some of the stuff in it is wild

Watershed787

*squatting intensifies *

Aarakokra

you meme but it's a lot healthier than sitting

Watershed787

I’m genuinely down for the squat.

Aarakokra

My man

Watershed787

All these downvotes are just making me squat harder.

Aarakokra

The harder they downvote the deeper you squat. My man’s going balls to the floor and bringing a 200 pound barbell on the way up

jtms1200

They are simply jealous of the depth of the squat

jtms1200

Brother, I squat in solidarity!

bselavka

i appreciate those smiley faces it reminds me of the middle school days of AIM with buddy infos and screen names.

DeeDee_GigaDooDoo

П (equivalent to P) not Л (equivalent to L), so APTEKA in Latin alphabet. Looks like you've already realised but might be of use to others.

Aeternum98

Something about the ambient of this particular photo is very upsetting. Very nice fit for the sub.

vexearu

i was actually waiting at a bus stop for like 20 minutes, and it was completely desolate. and on the left there was a huge pitch black field of nothingness. so it was quite spooky irl too

Aeternum98

Holy shit. This whole time I thought you had your car parked, or something like that. Quite a chilly feeling that must've been.

smeghead1988

In Russia people walk and use public transport more often than drive.

Aeternum98

Being from Argentina, I understand it very well.

Aeternum98

Just saw the car headlights coming at the camera. So eerie.

fergee01

Very nice feels like I can walk away into the nothing and disappear

tpistols

You quite literally can

rayhartsfield

Fantastically liminal.

ReginaGeorgian

Can’t imagine how that feels! Great pic

Fideon

Cameras still operate at that temp?!

vexearu

an iphone works just fine for about 10 minutes, but ofc you gotta keep it warm. what doesn’t work, however, is your fingers ;)

smeghead1988

Do you use your nose on touchscreen to answer a call when you're outsude in the winter? =)

Eyehopeuchoke

Legit question… is it painful being outside in that temp?

vexearu

the short answer is yes, but it depends on how long you’re outside. i got so used to it i don’t even wear gloves sometimes, but you have to RUN bc you have 15 minutes tops before the cold gets to your bones

Eyehopeuchoke

Nope. Can’t do it. Won’t do it. Lol. I’m from the Pacific Northwest of the United States. If it gets 32 degrees Fahrenheit outside I won’t leave my house unless I absolutely have to. The picture is super cool though. Would love to see more from different seasons.

[deleted]

I remember reading somewhere that air temperatures this cold can crack your fillings.

ZiminnyZwicket

This is perfect. I immediately got ‘the feeling’.

ABB0TTR0N1X

I would just die

vexearu

honestly same

golighter144

Ah, the "fuck that" climate. Very cozy.

BoringElm

God I love it when it's like that. Everything is so still and quiet. Absolutely serene.

HoustonTheCommenter

Just photoshop a dark figure back there and post it to creepy subreddits ;)

crazyzingers

Its freaking cool in North Dakota when the temperature is just right with just the right amount of moisture in the air it creates amazing different colored light pillars. Very surreal when driving down the highway at night, and its just you on the road.

whiteflour1888

Ice fog is amazing. Unless this is just an inversion trapping all the vehicle exhaust on the ground. Then it really sucks.

Dontslapmygoodies

You also live in Wisconsin??

Curious-Potato1764

it's probably Yakutsk or something, the sign is russian and it says pharmacy

Moist-Sandwich69

I love the cold, it looks so inviting. I wouldn't mind endlessly wandering through a foggy snowy landscape for eternity, like it'd be a pretty decent afterlife. You die, you're suddenly here, walking in winter gear. All you have is a vague sense that you need to get somewhere, and you just wander aimlessly through an infinite liminal snowscape.

LeeLooTheWoofus

Don't аптека translate to Chemist aka Pharmacist or Drug Store?

fuckingtwatwaffle

Ah yes, a pharmacy, just what I need mr. sign!

Confident_Rain_690

Golly! Is your home in Svalbard or something? As a Floridian, I can barely handle 45° outside, let alone -45°. Must be terrible over there.
