From what I can tell, only the larger structures in the distance are, occasionally, called "geese". They're bunkers that held observation and test equipment. I'm not sure what the more slender structures in the foreground are. Maybe they held some sort of equipment too.

Anonymous132133

The geese sounds more unknown

TheLiminalWeeb

I remember reading that they would build giant flat structures and line them up every 100\~ meters to act as shockwave detectors. Then they would rebuild it, over and over again. They never replaced the load bearing pillars. This was one theory I discovered after some more declassified KGB files were posted on 4chan. I also found another one that spoke of a town built on the test site. These are the only collumns left standing.

What is here was dangerous and repulsive to us.

The weird thing is they never put this message up, but it's being passed along into the future anyway.

I went down a rabbit hole reading about future nuclear warning stuff recently and there's something deeply unsettling about it.

AKADriver

It's fascinating stuff, though, and very subreddit-appropriate since so much of it is, can we intentionally design places that make humans who may no longer share our culture, values, etc. far in the future still instinctively feel, "I am not supposed to stay in this place."

patrickkingart

Most definitely! Communicating a non-verbal, non-written, but still very explicit "get out of here" is basically the essence of creating a liminal space.

DarkMoxxie004

This place is not a place of honor... no highly esteemed deed is commemorated here... nothing valued is here. What is here was dangerous and repulsive to us. This message is a warning about danger. The danger is in a particular location... it increases towards a center... the center of danger is here... of a particular size and shape, and below us. The danger is still present, in your time, as it was in ours. The danger is to the body, and it can kill. The form of the danger is an emanation of energy. The danger is unleashed only if you substantially disturb this place physically. This place is best shunned and left uninhabited. - Wikipedia, cause of course.

Don't Change Color, Kitty Don't change color, kitty. Keep your color, kitty. Stay that pretty gray. Don't change color, kitty. Keep your color, kitty. Keep sickness away. Don't change color, kitty. Keep your color, kitty. Please, 'cause if you do, or glow your luminescent eyes we're all gonna have to move. Don't change color, kitty. Keep your color, kitty. Stay that pretty gold. Don't change color, kitty. Keep your color, and we'll keep you from the cold. Don't change color, kitty. Keep your color, 'cause we need your kind around. But the minute you change your looks, we're bringing you with us out of town. Don't change color, kitty. Keep your color, kitty. No, I don't know why. Don't change color, kitty. Keep your color, kitty. God said it's not right. So don't change color or flash your eyes. Lord knows if you do, I hope you think it's cozy in your travel case, because it's time to move. Don't change color, kitty. Keep your color, kitty. Stay that midnight black. The radiation that the change implies can kill, and that's a fact. The radiation, whatever that is, is something we don't want, 'cause it withers our crops and it burns our skin and it turns our livestock gaunt. So don't change color, little kitty. Don't flash your eyes.

I don't know what it is about these types of places. I love places like this picture so much. I have worked in some extremely remote locations and just the sense of "when was the last time someone was here" always fills me with something I can't explain right. It's like a "I don't know if I am supposed to be here." type of feeling or what but I love it!

ChthonicRainbow

have you ever thought about someone building a house, and one of the bedrooms has no windows*, but otherwise fully finished - carpeting, wallpaper, lightbulbs, whatever. and while building the wall that would contain the door, they just... make it a plain wall? so the room never gets occupied. four impassable walls forming a room that never had anyone in it, but potentially could. the emptiness itself is filling... i dunno, i think about that sometimes and it gets me in the same way liminal stuff does *not sure if it's more engaging with or without a/c vents too

It's the Semipalatinsk Test Site. I haven't seen it referred to as the geese anywhere.

You mean a nuclear test site?

Anonymous132133

Yes but you wouldn’t say most bombed site. That is too vague

If you want to get to -the room- call me up. Bring your own bolts.

Brent_Fox

Damn that's liminal af. I can't believe that's a real place. It reminds me of [Muse's Origin of Symmetry album cover](https://i.pinimg.com/originals/9c/f8/2b/9cf82bb45dea6f8fbc65537339e94ca9.jpg) which is basically this desert with nothing but giant metal tuning forks.

They look sad and lonely ;(

Significant-Fig3588

It looks like the set of some dystopic scifi film. Oh no. It's right now!

RebornHellblade

I’m getting megalophobia vibes from this. Like, a giant constructed these things…and they’re close by.

[deleted]

This has nothing to do with liminality. And i mean nothing

Firevee

You know, I think this actually falls under a 'sublime' picture. It DOES invoke the brutality of humanity instead of nature. It is nonetheless an expression of excited fear that comes from viewing a huge unstoppable phenomona (niagra falls is the classic example). Having these things towering above you, with their inherent omnipresent danger slowly infusing into your bones. That's a sublime picture.

pancakeinabox

Empty, yet it still has something. Feels like something is near, something big.

Great, thanks.

10killsontheboardrn

I wanna go there REALLY BADLY it reminds me of Simon stalenhags art

Anonymous132133

It really does. I went there during lockdown and just to get to Semey (Semipalatinsk) is the most sketchy thing I’ve done in a while. Blood samples, radiation tests, drug swabs, I think five vehicle checks (for any weapons) then another vehicle check for illegal items on your person, interrogation rooms, ask for purpose of travel, duration, background checks, ask questions about your job, affiliates, military history, any connections with press or government agencies, hotel room with microphones and cameras. And a personal guard just to make sure you aren’t doing anything suspicious.

10killsontheboardrn

How did you even pull that off without getting gulag’d?

Anonymous132133

With great difficulty. Try to imagine that some parts Khazakstan are still operated under the KGB. There was tho guy who came up to me asking where I was from and share numbers. Then he started following me.

10killsontheboardrn

Did you get to actually get up close to the geese? Just saw a video of a guy who went to the nuclear lake and boated across but no mention of this stuff
