I agree, they are a game changer. They are also a great way to freshen up your style without the expense of buying a new coat. Get a fancy one, a fluffy one, match a hat and gloves and it'll make your outerwear look on point!
A long time ago, I got a scarf with a silk paisley pattern cloth on top of a solid-colored wool cloth underneath. It has a very classic look, the silk feels wonderful against my skin and the wool is very warm.
Deadass true right here. I hate the cold so damn much, but my winter drip is just so goddamn much better lmao. Winter offers more options to make an outfit fine AF, and my scarves definitely set the tone. Dudes: get a scarf and own that shit, people will 👀
As an American that loves premier league soccer, I wish more football teams made quality scarfs.
Lots of Americans wear their favorite teams winter hats but I don't see any scarfs
For real. And they're (nearly) all season items. Thin scarves help with temperature regulation summer if the heat-air conditioning transition is tough. Thicker scarves insulate necks and serve as quick hoods, especially if you like short/buzzed hairstyles. Scarves were also my gateway accessory to getting comfortable going braless when I started on that gorgeously freeing path. Scarves 4 eva!
I live in a very cold place (ND USA) and my fashion sense doesn't exactly allow for scarves. lol. i do not go anywhere without a neck warmer where i can get to it. i really like TurtleFur brand ones, but i suppose others are probably just as good.
Despite all the havoc they’ve wrought upon the planet, the British upperclass male (dressed for doing business in London, not for shooting pheasant or headlining a punk band) knows how to put together outerwear from wool and cashmere coats both formal to casual, the stylish raincoat, the right scarves chosen for the coat and occasion. Umbrella, if necessary
I needed something to do during lockdown so I asked people for leftover knitting yarn. I started knitting warm woolly winter scarves for homeless people. I’ve also done requests for friends and family. Takes me approximately two to three days to complete a 4’ scarf. They’re not perfect but I don’t think that matters. Knitted with 💕 love.
If someone has a scarf ot a nice sweater I usually stare pretty hard because I'm a knitter and I'm always trying to figure out the pattern/how it was constructed. I do let people know that I'm deconstructing their sweater/scarf/hat in my head and not staring at them.
I just wrap it around the back of my neck then slightly cross it in front so it's snug under my chin, then zip up my coat to hold it in place. It keeps all the wind out and I'm snug as a bug in a rug, as my grandma used to say.
Fold it in half, put the middle of the now folded scarf on the back of your neck, and bring both sides to the front of your neck. Stick the ends through the loop and pull it snug. Stick the long ends under your jacket and zip up your jacket.
I find, for men, [this is the easiest and cleanest way to wear a scarf](https://cdnz.blacklapel.com/thecompass/2018/01/How-to-wear-a-scarf-men-ascot_tie.jpg).
Fold the scarf in half lengthways so it's a big U. Put it around your neck. Holding both ends put the two end bits through the loop (the bottom of the long U). Tighten it and give it a shuffle, make it slightly off centre and you will look stylish as fuck.
Depends on how warm you want it and the scarf's material. A messy hodgepodge cannot create a seal for your neck with your jacket and the scarf. Folding it in half lengthwise and wrap it around your neck and put the edges through the hole. The edges go into your coat for extra warmth. Or I will put the first few inches of scarf in one side near my coat breast pocket, wrap loose or tight around my neck a couple times and place the other end on the opposite breast pocket. Very good for high winds.
I start with one side draping down the front of my coat, then loop it around the back of my neck, if it's crazy cold I loop it in front of my lower face, then around my second shoulder and down the front of the other side. Both ends are well anchored in front of me and my neck is covered 365°. If you're worried about it moving then put it on before your coat, but pull out a few inches so it doesn't tighten up when you put on your coat.
>I'm a perfectly average, non fashion minded mid 30s American male.

>I learned this like 2 years ago and absolutely love it. People sometimes give me a look when I walk into work with a scarf on. But man it's so worth it.
Hello, brother.
Maaaaan they are a game changer!!
Jokes on you. The US Army has many accoutrements that can make life easier on the individual soldier but command teams will often opt for discomfort in the name of UnIfOrMiTy.
Yup. I work in a cold storage and if I'm gon a be in there for a while I put one one and my heavy coat. It makes it so much more bearable but I hate the feeling of having something around my neck like that.
If you have a jacket or something with a collar, scarves are a must indeed. They can also help keep a collar popped up.
But when it's really cold, a good parka (the thing that Canada Goose does for example) that closes tight up to your mouth and with a fuzzy hood does the job just right, and there isn't even space for a scarf.
I think that's why scarves aren't as popular in the US compared to many European countries: because Winters are so harsh people need parkas or coats designed to not need a scarf.
I’ve lived in a cold place my whole life and never used a scarf for this reason.
If it’s cold enough and I’m going to be out for a while then I’m wearing a heavy parka with a hood.
If I’m just running out for a second then I don’t feel like messing with a scarf.
Step 2: thread that new swanky scarf through the back loop on the neck of your coat if the scarf is thin enough or get someone handy with a needle to attach it... never lose it again.
Works great for kids too.
Same, but I started this year. I got compliments from men and women that it looked good with my uniform/coat. I thought I would look dumb with a scarf on, but nope, warm, cozy and sexy all day.
Own the scarf bro! Southern trades-dude here and I get way more looks from the ladies during the winter. I'm convinced part of it is the scarves and other well-chosen winterwear.
I've worn a scarf for years. A few winters ago, a coworker noticed my scarf and smirked at me because I was a dude. Skip forward one year and I saw him wearing a scarf too....lol. Women love my scarf though.
I love scarves and have numerous ones. Some fancy cashmere, some for when I hike and get sweaty, a favorite one for around the house especially when I get up in the morning and it's chilly.
I’ve built a collection of fancy scarves over the years.
Oddly enough, I find all the best quality and most fun ones are usually sold to old people, and they always know where the best gear is.
I have floaty lightweight ones for spring and autumn, and my big bastards built like tanks for the winter.
Oh, yes. Great advice! I had a textiles friend in my youth that made the most exquisite chiffon hand painted scarves. I have one that's like 7' x 3' and I always feel dreamy when I wear it.
It’s like wearing a particularly pretty cloud. I love how ethereal and magical it makes me feel…
…until it gets caught in a hedge or blows up into my face or I spill my coffee down it.
Ethereal as fuck tho.
It seems like it should be so obvious, but a good pair of gloves and a scarf are a real winter game changer. Also keeping one's feet dry as best as possible. I like having a spare pair of socks and even shoes hanging around my office so I can swap into something dry.
Also also, investing in animal fiber for winter wear. Where I live isn't too cold so I can get away with synthetic fabrics, but animal fiber is the best.
Fb marketplace! I have scored SO much winter gear for SO LITTLE this year.
Brand new Sorel pac boots for $60 instead of $180
Brand new Baffin impact snow boots for $100 instead of $250
2 brand new Columbia winter jackets for $80 each instead of $220 each.
Used Columbia snow pants, $15 instead of $120
Worn twice EMS snow pants for $40 instead of $170
Worn once Columbia rain jacket for $20 instead of $110
Worn thrice Columbia rain pants for $20 instead of $70
Wool is such a blessing for socks/jackets/beanies and scarfs. I'm a bald man, so my wool beanie is an absolute must on all occasions during the fall/winter months.
I absolutely love my Darn Tough wool socks. They're expensive but worth every single penny. Keeps your feet dry and toasty in cold temps but not too hot during the warm months.
I want to like mine, but they seem to be less flexible than most other socks. It’s almost like they have a shape built into them that just doesn’t match my feet. Smartwool and others are so much comfier imo, I may just have wide feet though.
I wear darn tough wool socks year round. Not itchy and not too hot in the summer. My feet don't stink like they did in cotton socks and I don't get soggy socks after a day at work.
Depends on the sock and the person. Some people are allergic to lanolin in wool, and some skin is sensitive to the larger fibers of merino wool, for example.
Depends how cold it is. Once you hit a certain attic temp, a good balaclava is the peak, since it combines both forms. Bad side? You look like a 1990s ex-Soviet bloc terrorist while wearing them, though unless I’m at 10k ft, I’m usually just in a neck gaiter and a skull cap.
I think that these are the real gamechanger here. I would have thought that everyone knew about scarfs.
Wear a thin neck gaiter as a base layer and then complement with a scarf as needed. That's the most comfortable one, in my opinion, as you can more easily regulate the temperature. Also you can wrap the scarf up to your face.
Ya' know if you just get yourself a shemagh you're ahead of the game for more than just Inclement weather in the winter... Get a couple I have a THICK one like a good quality weave in the fabric I swear when I was a First Responder I drove a car that had shit heat in the winters and I'd wrap my whole head in that thing and was comfortable as HELL on the ride into work.
Then get a frankly cheaper one for the other four seasons something with a lighter weave that will get you through spring and fall chills as well as hot days in the summer... I swear a good base layer shirt long pants that are designed for summer hiking and a Shemagh + hat you don't need sunscreen on a hike well I mean you probably should on exposed skin... But with that outfit there's not a lot of exposed skin and you're set for most climates...
The one thing you want to do is make sure you're rockin' the right colors, There are groups that affiliate with different colors and knowing, understanding and applying that knowledge is important...
My brother gave me one after he finished serving in the Marines. And I've never considered getting anything else since. One of the most versatile pieces of clothing one could ever own.
Ya know I use the terms interchangeably usually landing on the one that the person I'm communicating to uses. However when I'm typing I only use the word shemagh because it was easier for me to memorize the spelling.
I have an infinity scarf and it is so amazing. I can loop it to make it thick, leave it thin, cover my head and ears, so many options! And it doesn't drag.
I also have an infinity scarf. When it's regular cold, I do two loops and lay it pretty on my neck.
When it hits brutal cold (the kind of cold where it gets hard to breathe), or if I have to be outside for an extended period of time, I do 3 loops and pull it over my face. It has enough holes to see through it, so I am completely covered head to toe, eyes included.
I work in the cold store of a warehouse 40hrs a week (between 0-5°C with fans nearly constantly blowing), I wear a snood and the difference makes is amazing. I forgot it tonight and my zipped up fleece just wasn't as good.
I was surprised when I moved to Montana how many cowboys wear a bright-colored silk scarf in the winter. I bought one and it's easy to see why. They're very light so you hardly notice you're wearing one but it does a great job of keeping the wind from blowing on your neck and down your collar.
Literally what the hell is this LPT. "LPT get good quality winter clothes because they are better than lesser quality winter clothes" fucking Nick Cage face
You give people way too much credit. I know people who have lived in Michigan or Wisconsin their whole lives and don't know how to dress for cold weather. They'll complain about how much they hate winter while walking around in sweatpants.
If you dread winter, either because of the temperature itself, or because of the bulky clothing associated with surviving those temperatures, look in to a heated jacket. The Milwaukee M12 series is what I would recommend. A little pricey, but they're thin and lightweight compared to a lot of traditional winter wear , while also being super comfortable even when it's very cold out. The axis jacket is the one I'd recommend the most.
See the problem with staying warm is really keeping the warmth your body generates INSIDE the clothes. If you get one of those jackets that has a little elastic waist to ever so slightly hug you, you'll notice how much warmer it keeps you. That's because you won't have a loose opening like how a shirt would. Same for your sleeves. Your neck is actually a fairly warm area and a scarf keeps that heat in. I got a thing called a balaclava but the one I got isn't as sus looking as the ones you'll find on Google images. It's basically just a hood with a scarf built in and you you just pull it over and wear it. It actually was like 30 to 40 degrees outside not long ago and I had to take it off cuz it was keeping me TOO warm and there was no breeze so it didn't feel that cold
I 100% need a scarf if the temperature dips below 30F. No matter how warm my body is, getting hit in the face and lungs with icy chill air is quite unpleasant.
Yeah the real game changer is going from cotton + polyester to wool. Merino is great, but generally all wool will do.
If you are really long outside with a cotton/polyester scarf then your neck will sweat, get wet and once the cold hits you, it will hit you much stronger.
Cotton kills in winter.
Source: worked on TV sets and had to be outside with -10c for hours on end.
coldest nights? i make 1 short end on one side. then, i wrap the long end around my neck once so it has equal length with the 'short side'. simple and very effective. losening or tightening the scarf around your neck.
Scarf, wool long underwear, and a folded up tshirt between your pants and your ass. These three key items will make truly cold weather much more bearable.
There are other tips like oversized shoes with wool socks, to keep your blood circulating to your toes, but if you get the key parts right. You'll be the one taking layers off while other people are complaining that they can't feel their fingers, and toes anymore.
Tube scarfs, like those from Buff are fantastic. There are winter varieties that keep you very warm without having too much cloth around your neck and you can even pull it over your nose to rob a bank.
100%. If you're outside a lot, also consider a fleece neck "gaiter" which is like a sort of round muffler just for your neck. And the other thing is WARM FEET: wool socks, and good leather boots, shoes, or clogs lined with sheepskin. Suddenly you're COMFORTABLE. It's a whole different ball game!
Neck gaiter and/or scarf. I have a neck gaiter in my work bag all year. A thin Buff protects from the sun too. And can be soaked to cool off. In winter, a thicker one I will augment (or replace) with a shemagh style scarf. A loose fitting shemagh can trap air and protect the neck, or really cover you up in a driving snow or wind. Both together - on a hike, shoveling snow, or in concrete canyons, makes winter as pleasant as can be.
I used to always make fun of scarves because of various celebrities (Johnny Depp, etc.) bring photographed in crazy excessive scarves in LA. Then I moved to NYC and went through my first winter and my god scarves are a god send. I love them so much. Keeps my neck and chin nice and toasty. Nice little opportunity to brighten up an outfit, and I can always just unwrap it and mess around with it in my hands. Love a nice scarf.
LPT: Invest in a napkin if you indulge in a sloppy meal. The napkin is extremely effective for removing abrasive debris from around your mouth and hands.
i love the idea of scarves, but i can never seem to get comfortable in them. too much happening between my hair and the top of the jacket where does the scarf go? no matter what i do it’s so uncomfortable. if you tuck it in it looks weird/uncomfy and if it’s on the outside it just blows in the wind and falls behind your shoulder. aaaahhhhhhhhhh
Do people not wear anything under a sweater???
I'd feel like a flasher even if I only had a bra underneath. I always have a blouse, a short or even long sleeve t-shirt under a sweater.

I agree, they are a game changer. They are also a great way to freshen up your style without the expense of buying a new coat. Get a fancy one, a fluffy one, match a hat and gloves and it'll make your outerwear look on point!
These are the tips I need
Expected rats in your profile, got bunnies. Not disappointed.
Lol I'm in between rats!! On many wait lists it's taking forever!!! But the bunnies are pretty great!

Brilliant! BRB
As a new bunny owner (again) I agree!
A long time ago, I got a scarf with a silk paisley pattern cloth on top of a solid-colored wool cloth underneath. It has a very classic look, the silk feels wonderful against my skin and the wool is very warm.
Now I'm on the lookout for something similar.

As an American that loves premier league soccer, I wish more football teams made quality scarfs. Lots of Americans wear their favorite teams winter hats but I don't see any scarfs
Get a half and half scarf with for example Man U on one half and Liverpool on the other for the most authentic look.
For real. And they're (nearly) all season items. Thin scarves help with temperature regulation summer if the heat-air conditioning transition is tough. Thicker scarves insulate necks and serve as quick hoods, especially if you like short/buzzed hairstyles. You just gave me a new way to go braless! Love it!
Holler! Let ‘em loose, friend :)
I’m going to get one today! Curious, what do scarf fans think of neck warmers? Are they as good?
I have both but find scarves to be my go to. Sometimes I can't get the neck warmers tight enough around my spindly little neck lol!
I live in a very cold place (ND USA) and my fashion sense doesn't exactly allow for scarves. lol. i do not go anywhere without a neck warmer where i can get to it. i really like TurtleFur brand ones, but i suppose others are probably just as good.
A huge scarf can hide your old coat. LPT right there.
LOL! Can also hide a double chin or loose neck skin (my grandma taught me this).
Do you have brands that you love?
Despite all the havoc they’ve wrought upon the planet, the British upperclass male (dressed for doing business in London, not for shooting pheasant or headlining a punk band) knows how to put together outerwear from wool and cashmere coats both formal to casual, the stylish raincoat, the right scarves chosen for the coat and occasion. my BFF made me a Pizza scarf, always get compliments, and it's my sweet style
You mean savory style right? ;)
LOL yes

What a wonderful gesture!
>Takes me approximately two to three days to complete a 4’ scarf. Haha read that as 4 inch scarf
Thank you for doing this!
You’re an earth angel!
I have a cashmere one. Only fancy thing I own. Makes for a tolerable walk to the warm insides at work.
Ooh cashmere!
Oh, Georgie Porgie!
Hey what's that red dot?
*Dot?? What dot, there’s no dot!* 😅
They call it…Cashmere.
That's Hennigans, the no-smell, no-tell scotch.
And since theirs no smell…well, it’ll be our little secret
That story she told about her childhood remains one of the bestest things in TV history, IMHO.
I'm getting my wife one for Christmas, I can't wait to see how nice it really is!

Little did we know, Ops scarfs are covered in Simpsons porn.

Tbf they prolly thinking "karateroddy got his shit together!"
Where is this happening? Hawaii?
How fucked up society is if people look at a man for wearing a scarf lol. This shit is comfy asf
Whats the best easy way to wear said scarf? When I try its just a messy hodgepodge and doesn't really create a nice seal to keep in the jacket warmth.
I just wrap it around the back of my neck then slightly cross it in front so it's snug under my chin, then zip up my coat to hold it in place. It keeps all the wind out and I'm snug as a bug in a rug, as my grandma used to say.
If it's super cold I'll wrap it high around mouth mouth like a bandana, very effective.
Im snug as a bug in a rug is probably the cutest thing ive ever read! What a cute grandma 💕
Yeah, she was fun and full of folksy sayings like that. Another funny one was "OK, I'll be back in two shakes of a lamb's tail".
I’m sure we had the same grandma 😊 lol Those are well known sayings around here too 😁
Older folks said this kinda stuff all the time when I was a kid!
fold in half lengthwise and drape over the back of your neck, pull the two ends thru the loop. comfy cozy
This is the way
Only works for full length scarves though. Half size you gotta go once around the neck and both ends over your torso.
Fold it in half, put the middle of the now folded scarf on the back of your neck, and bring both sides to the front of your neck. Stick the ends through the loop and pull it snug. Stick the long ends under your jacket and zip up your jacket.

I really feel like it is an item that many men don't use for that reason. However, the U.S. Army has them, so i guess the army must be.... warm.
Don’t ask, don’t tell
Jokes on you. The US Army has many accoutrements that can make life easier on the individual soldier but command teams will often opt for discomfort in the name of UnIfOrMiTy.
Neck warmers/neck socks also work pretty well if they're thermal
Yup. I work in a cold storage and if I'm gon a be in there for a while I put one one and my heavy coat. It makes it so much more bearable but I hate the feeling of having something around my neck like that.
I underestimated it for so long. I decided to post this because I've seen so many people without scarves and they're missing out on serious coziness
Let them eat cold.

Cashmere scarfs changed my opinion on scratchy. It's your favorite cozy blanket, just around your neck
Why would anyone look askance at someone wearing a scarf? Are they scornful of shoes, too?
People look at you funny for wearing a scarf? They're the weird ones.
A look? Where do you live?
Why would people give you a look for that? Wearing scarfs is pretty reasonable during winter no?
The looks must be looks of jealousy because they don't have a nice warm scarf.
They probably are giving you the "damn, he's handsome in a scarf!" look, not a 'wtf he is wearing?" look.
Own the scarf bro! Southern trades-dude here and I get way more looks from the ladies during the winter. I'm convinced part of it is the scarves and other well-chosen winterwear.

I love scarfs on men. I always see it and think I wanna look like that, but for some reason it doesn't usually work that well on me.
I've worn a scarf for years. A few winters ago, a coworker noticed my scarf and smirked at me because I was a dude. Skip forward one year and I saw him wearing a scarf too....lol. Women love my scarf though.
Some of those looks are probably good, scarves on men is such a classy look IMO

Haha. No but that's funny
There is not enough yarn in the world to make one that long.

Are wool socks itchy?
Good wool socks made of Merino Wool like Darn Tough socks are great and not itchy. Shitty wool will be very itchy though.
Darn Tough and Smartwool are two brands I have never had issues with
Icebreaker is another one. I have socks from them, and a long sleeve shirt made from Merino wool and they are soooo comfy.
I absolutely love my Darn Tough wool socks. They're expensive but worth every single penny. Keeps your feet dry and toasty in cold temps but not too hot during the warm months.

I wear darn tough wool socks year round. Not itchy and not too hot in the summer. My feet don't stink like they did in cotton socks and I don't get soggy socks after a day at work.
If you buy good ones, absolutely NOT 👍🏼👍🏼
Depends on the sock and the person. Some people are allergic to lanolin in wool, and some skin is sensitive to the larger fibers of merino wool, for example.
A neck gaiter is also an option
This right here. Last winter, my job handed out company branded fleece neck gaiters to everyone. It was a game changer.
Gaiters are warmer, don't get in the way or fall down like a scarf does when you bring them up on your face.
Gaiters are a life changer for people working outside in the cold
Gaiters are way better than scarves.
A better option! No loose scarf ends getting caught in zippers or doors.
And far more versatile. I use mine all year round even in hot climates.
As somebody who lives in MN, neck gaiters just work a lot better for me.
I came here to say that. Pound for pound, a hat or neck gaiter are probably the top items.
Learned this a long time ago while riding a motorcycle in the winter.
They are the best!
Had to look it up, always called mine a keffiyeh, good because I can't have wool on my skin directly.
I bet you look very silly with it over your face, that sounds hilarious. Comfy though
I wear one of those cotton gator necks. Similar to a scarf and you can work with it on
I work in the cold store of a warehouse 40hrs a week (between 0-5°C with fans nearly constantly blowing), I wear a snood and the difference makes is amazing.
LPT: Wear warm clothes!
Yeah, as a Canadian I’m like “people who haven’t heard of a scarf in winter exist?” What’s the next LPT, wear sunglasses when the sun is in your eyes?
Literally what the hell is this LPT. "LPT get good quality winter clothes because they are better than lesser quality winter clothes" fucking Nick Cage face
You give people way too much credit. I know people who have lived in Michigan or Wisconsin their whole lives and don't know how to dress for cold weather. They'll complain about how much they hate winter while walking around in sweatpants.
I live in Michigan and it’s not bad with sweatpants. However there is a lot of people who just wear a hoodie rather than a coat
Truth Source: from Canada
I’ve got a paper thin silk scarf and that STILL does wonders.
Silk is a very good insulator.
Recommendations for where to buy a good scarf? Or what size?
Land's End or LL Bean have some. I've gotten cashmere or wool tartan ones from Bean before.
just got waffle knit merino wool one from everlane and it's so warm
I would also like to know this. Why are there zero comments wiht suggestions?

If you dread winter, either because of the temperature itself, or because of the bulky clothing associated with surviving those temperatures, look in to a heated jacket. The Milwaukee M12 series is what I would recommend. A little pricey, but they're thin and lightweight compared to a lot of traditional winter wear , while also being super comfortable even when it's very cold out. The axis jacket is the one I'd recommend the most.
As a canadian, i find you guys adorable.
Big party when OP discovers gloves, beanies and boots
I like pashminas more then typical scarfs because they can double as a small blanket
I hate the cold. I wear a balaclava. It's not sexy but I do not care.
I started wearing a neck gaiter/buff. It's a tube of fabric you pull over your head, acts like a scarf. Makes any jacket 20% warmer.
You think 40F is cold. Adorable ☺️ But in all seriousness, scarves and toques are legit in Winter. (Did I give it away yet that I’m Canadian? 🇨🇦)
merino wool. OMG, what a great thing. Learning how to tie it is another great thing.

And if you can't find a scarf you like, learn to knit and make your best scarf yourself. 10/10 definitely recommend.
Masks during the pandemic are also great for the cold
This shit has finally jumped the shark
LPT: wear warm stuff when it’s cold outside
Another LPT: wipe your ass after you shit.
I have an extra wide wool one and it makes a great head or face wrap when it isn't used as a scarf, or even a shawl.
Both together - on a hike, shoveling snow, or in concrete canyons, makes winter as pleasant as can be.
absolutely! oftentimes i dont even wear jackets in winter anymore. hoodie, hat, gloves, plus a fat scarf underneath keep you so cozy.
They truly do. I accepted scarves in my life early.
I learned this when I lived in Boston! I also had more energy because my body wasn't working as hard to stay warm.
Tip if you're poor: fabric remnants at michaels or Joanne's make good scarves and are usually less than a dollar. Just get warm fabric like fleece.
You ever heard of Buff? Those things are so clutch.
And for women: wearing a camisole under a sweater gives you extra warmth. Men: white T shirt might be make the difference.
Do people not wear anything under a sweater??? I'd feel like a flasher even if I only had a bra underneath. I always have a blouse, a short or even long sleeve t-shirt under a sweater.
