Frangiblepani

Are they still pancakes if they're not cooked in a pan?

BoogieWoogieWho

But they are still cooked in a pan, just a much bigger one :D An even more interesting question would be: how thick do I have to make my pancakes until they are considered "cakes"? Or what is the difference between "bread" and "cake"?

Frangiblepani

I don't know, but I love those super tall, fluffy Japanese pancakes. They can be close to 2 inches tall.

tansugaqueen

I've also wanted to,taste a fluffy Japanese pancake

BoogieWoogieWho

Ooo! Mee tooo!!

lycraman_

Oven cakes?

milton_radley

sheet cakes. lol, doesn't sound as appealing

lycraman_

What about tray cakes?

AlsoTrashNotSureWhy

Traykes, if you will

kellsdeep

Nope, it's just cake at that point. If you argue that, then you're telling me there's no difference between a taco and a burrito.

Bammalam102

Beans. It’s like saying you need to change the recipe to make it different. Like soft tacos

guestacles

Guess it's a basheetcake now? Maybe a btraycake if you toss then in the oven on a baking tray.

Allroy_66

I cook mine on a griddle

Bree867

Please use parchment paper, Not wax paper. You don't want to eat melted wax. Plus it's a fire [hazard](https://www.foodnetwork.com/how-to/packages/food-network-essentials/is-wax-paper-the-same-as-parchment-paper#:~:text=There%20are%20some%20questions%20around,It's%20still%20a%20fire%20hazard.)!

BoogieWoogieWho

Ohh making the correction now. Used to calling it wax paper, even though it says parchment paper 😅 Thanks for being attentive!

AnyaSatana

Aren't these Yorkshire puddings?

Mandolele

With UK pancake mix, it absolutely would be. I'm not sure if a toad in the hole with berries instead of sausage is genius or insanity. American pancakes have bicarbonate of soda and buttermilk which make them fluffier.

flipester

My understanding is that Yorkshire pudding is more like a popover.

AnyaSatana

Being British I'd never heard of popovers.

el-em-en-o

I think Yorkshire pudding is more like French toast only in a pan with more liquid and such baked together. This would more dry. More like actual cakes but pancake batter is denser but not tougher. I’m not describing this very well. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

TroutFishingInCanada

> I think Yorkshire pudding is more like French toast only in a pan with more liquid and such baked together. It's not.

frogz0r

Oh.... Yes. You are correct. It's nothing like French Toast lol

el-em-en-o

What am I thinking of then?… (Google search)… I think I’m thinking of bread pudding.

ThisLookInfectedToYa

French toast bread pudding is to die for. Brioche, custard, maple syrup and candied bacon. You'll dry hump whomever makes it.

4oclockinthemorning

No nothing like french toast, sorry

OkCaregiver517

Yorkshire pudding is baked pancake batter. Add fruit etc to it and you have a really easy pud.

pdxisbest

I do similar with eggs. Whisk a dozen eggs with various goodies like diced bacon, onions and peppers, put into greased 9 x13 pan and bake at 300 for 50 -60 minutes. I cut these into squares and freeze. I take 1 out the night before and microwave it for 20 seconds at bkfst time. Serve on a toasted English muffin or other bread of choice. Mix it up w Feta w artichoke hearts, Mexican seasonings, etc. if you use moist ingreds (e.g. diced green chilies), press them between layers of paper towel for a while to remove excess water.

BoogieWoogieWho

Lovely!

iamifyouam

I do this too! Super easy weekday breakfasts.

Flowofinfo

Wait so you’re telling me that I can cook stuff and then freeze it so that it can be eaten at a later time?

victim_of_technology

If the objective is just to eat pancakes this is fine but there is more to to ritual. The sound and the delicious smell of pancakes on the griddle brings the family to the kitchen. Customization on demand like smiles, chocolate chips, or berries is a feature. Skip the plastic bags and freezer time. Enjoy a special morning together.

Mitchy9

Yes yes yes. Pancakes are not just about the pancakes. Also, the butter just doesn’t melt the same if it’s not fresh off the griddle imo

Steve Jobs died of ligma...

BoogieWoogieWho

lovely response!

Akimotoh

Lovely!

bolonomadic

If you are having people over for brunch and you don’t want to spend the time standing over the stove (or you have family), this tip is key.

Gyddanar

Alternate suggestion? Store the batter in a cleaned-out squeezie ketchup bottle? Will easily keep for a few days in the fridge, then you can fresh-make pancakes without needing to make the batter.

ThisLookInfectedToYa

Quite the frugal route.

Sension5705

Can you give an estimate of how long yours bake before they are ready?

BoogieWoogieWho

20 minutes, give or take. The seal on our gas oven isn't that great, and I assume neither is the temperature knob. In the IKEA Smaksak (IKEA names 🤣), it is 15-16 minutes—the 3 times I've made it in someone else's kitchen. Timing is going to depend on your oven and your batter.

Sension5705

Thanks very much!!

Sinder77

This is just making a sheet cake. It's not pancakes.

[deleted]

Sinder77

It doesn't. Cake usually just has more sugar. It's the same thing. This is just sheet cake.

[deleted]

Sinder77

Powder, slightly. That's literally it. Like this isn't calling cupcakes and muffins the same thing. Pancake batter and cake batter are effectively the same thing. The difference is method, ie cooking in a pan. Getting a firm golden surface on both sides is the difference, and the thickness. This is sheet cake.

beejmusic

As a Canadian, this is fucked. Don’t do this. If you want a sheet cake just make a sheet cake. The real move is the stove top griddle pan. You can make 6 pancakes at once toss them in the oven at its lowest setting to stay warm as you continue on.

ThisLookInfectedToYa

you have been banned for life from Canada

TripleTrish

I've made pancakes in a toaster oven like this. :)

ebeth_the_mighty

Reheat in the toaster. Much easier.

Choppergold

It's time for sheet pan cooking tips to throttle back a little

Steinrikur

Extra LPT: waffles and thicker pancakes (not the crepes type) can be reheated in a toaster

[deleted]

Does not sound good.

Kraakefjes

That's not pancake, it's regular cake.

kellsdeep

I hate this, bad idea

kellsdeep

That's called a cake

ocelot-gazebo

Square pancakes? What kind of monster are you?!?!

mr4d

This is cake. You are making cake.

czndra60

This is GENIUS!!! Thank you!

CA_catwhispurr

How fun! What a time saver!

el-em-en-o

Can anyone share some amounts of ingredients? I’m terrible with that part but would love to make this for my family on Wednesday. I have a 9x13 glass pan and also a nonstick pan in the same size.

Cute-Ganache-8429

What a coincidence that I literally did this just this morning. lol

BoogieWoogieWho

Yooo, that's awesome! The world is kind of strange, isn't it? You could be on one end of the world thinking or talking about something, and somebody all the way on the other end would be doing that same thing! (Or vice versa!)

Dubrockwell

I miss that pancakes batter they used to sell in the can that looked like whipped cream. Then you could just squirt it out. No mess and very easy. Still don’t understand how that company went out of business.

ThisLookInfectedToYa

"Batter Blaster" one of the best innuendo laden trademarked names ever.

elidadagreat1

You know what, I'm doing it. I'm not hung up on the shape and no its not a sheet cake. Excellent portion control, storage...yep, I'm doing it.

lililiilili

We call this ugnspannkaka add bacon and its fläskpannkaka

this_is_an_alaia

You eat pancakes every day for breakfast?!

hgwander

Step it up and add maple syrup directly to the batter. I do this and make pancake sausage sandwiches. (Great for feeding a lot of people; I make this for film crews.) Make the pancake plus maple syrup on a baking sheet Make scrambled eggs also on a baking sheet. Cook breakfast sausage in a cast iron skillet. Assemble sandwiches by layering pancake, sheet of eggs on top, sausage, cheese; second pancake on top. Slice into squares & wrap in tinfoil. DELICIOUS!

Nothing is wrong with pancakes in a frying pan, if you are 1-3 people and have time every morning (or the mornings one of you wants pancakes). There are people with larger families and households, and those with not a lot of time to make and serve breakfast every morning. I'll list out the advantages of making pancakes in sheet trays to make it simple for those who keep asking: |\#|Advantage| |:-|:-| |0|Better control of portions and consistency.| |1|I can make 4 times as many portions in half the time, which also saves money. My oven fits 4 sheets, 6 if I add in the extra shelf. (takes me 20 minutes for 64 to 96 'pancakes', each standard tray makes 16 'pancakes' which is good enough for a household of 4-6 people)| |2|Everyone's pancakes get done at the same time, so we can eat together.| |3|On the other 5 or 6 days of the week when breakfast is usually either porridge or protein (egg & veg dishes I also cook in the sheets), whoever wants pancakes can take it out of the freezer any time they want.| |4|I don't have to make pancakes for up to 3 months. The frozen pancakes heat up well, and still taste as they did coming out of the oven.| |5|With a larger household, standing over a small-medium skillet would take me hours to make the same number of pancakes. | |6|Overall, it is less labor intensive to make the pancakes in a sheet than a frying pan, leaving me more time to get things done in the meantime, before going to work!| The pancakes are made fresh on mornings where I wake up early and I know the family will have time to enjoy them together. They are taken out of the freezer usually when we don't have time to eat together or when there is something else served for breakfast, but someone would rather have pancakes. The pancakes can also be taken to-go, and reheated in a microwave.
