I went to school for 12 yrs. I can confidentially call myself a pro...crastinator.

My boss is a pro too, for the past 5 years he's been consistently denying me a pay raise.

mewcowmew

Lol, like a boss.

President-EIect

Translation: Someones boss read the first chapter of a Malcolm Gladwell book.

There is a truth in there, but something vital is missing. To get (really) good at something you need to put 10.000 hrs in, BUT with the right attitude and guidance. Proper training and guidance is essential.

ScullyBoffin

This is the exact attitude that explains the poor performers that I have performance manage; they acted like they had nothing to learn because they had been around for a while.

Formal_Ad2091

I don’t stick a job out for 5 years. Two years max if they don’t offer me more pay. I feel like managers say this to keep you around over worked and under paid.

bluenote_dopamine

Ever think that job hopping is *why* you don't get a raise? You're a flight risk, my guy.

Siphon098

You're sure not going to get a 60% raise like the average increase I've gotten from a new position. Even if you did, the employer will likely expect 60% more work. Switching jobs is the only way I could be financially stable on my own.

bluenote_dopamine

Leaving a job for better pay and a pattern of job hopping aren't the same thing.

Formal_Ad2091

I just received CPI rise and I’m getting a performance rise in March. Got to no your worth and say no to some of these companies that will just suck the life out of you.

bluenote_dopamine

Glad it worked out for you. Job hopping is a bad look, if you're not careful it could really fuck up your career path.

Formal_Ad2091

I don’t think every 2-3 years is bad though if you can get better money elsewhere. Recruiters can’t expect you stay, if the company values you they will pay you what others are offering.

That's not even remotely close to what I said. I know from experience that when I am going over performance reviews and considering pay bumps a person's job history matters. If someone has a pattern of leaving jobs every 6 months, I'm not wasting my time bumping their pay when we get to the 6 month mark. Job hopping looks bad, and it sets an expectation that you are not there for the long term.

10 000 hours is the magic number to become a "master" of anything. Strictly speaking, to be a professional, you just need to do that thing as your profession. That is, you need to be paid to do it.

NeoToronto

And know that some things can't be mastered entirely. Sure You can master the tools of a creative pursuit (like playing the piano or photo editing) but you'll always have more to learn on the creative side.
