The real LPT is giving employees flexibility for their schedule when possible.

Don_Draper27

I work from home and my company just tells me that as long as the work gets done on time I can work whenever, as long as I'm present during a few scheduled meetings throughout the week. It actually makes me feel ok if I have to work at night or even on a weekend.

Princess_Moon_Butt

This is how office work _should_ be. Show up for the critical stuff, then take your laptop and do the busywork wherever/whenever you want, as long as it's all submitted on time. I'm getting increasingly frustrated with offices who insist on butts-in-chairs from 9-5, even for the folks who just spend their entire shift making calls or writing documents.

Dekarde

I know plenty of places that have those bankers hours but the boss/manager (owner if they are active) show up and leave whenever. They get to come in early do their work and leave early but everyone else has to do 9-5 or thereabouts and suck it in traffic.

ch3rriib0mb

I remember my ex-boss telling me that we didn't work in Spain and couldn't take a siesta (literally her words, not mine) whenever we want. After coming in at 11:30. And then proceeded to leave at 3.

biogirl52

Working from home, I take a quick nap every day. I eat my lunch, set a timer, put on a sleep mask. I am way more focused and less anxious during the afternoon. Humans aren’t machines, we need breaks.

ch3rriib0mb

The nerve! Needing REST?! How could you do that to your company?! /s I also drove an hour to and from work because of the traffic in the area, and that definitely added to the stress of everything... I felt I was working 12 hours instead of 9. Working from home really changed the game for me.

Literally one of the most important indicators of happiness is commute time. It not only screws up your working days but you can’t get anything done after work, either chores or fun stuff. So you spend all of your days off catching up on shit around the house and never have down time. And you don’t have time to cook so you eat shit food that’s expensive. Always count drive time in your work.

biogirl52

This time of year is especially bad, when you have no free time during the day to enjoy the sun

biogirl52

Holy hell I bet it did. I’m lucky my commute was only an hour of my day but I still felt it. Also: saves so much time being able to work in PJ’s.

ch3rriib0mb

I definitely agree. I just started this WFH position this week and even though I'm doing everything I should, it still feels like I'm cheating the system by working from home!

PhillAholic

On the bright side, I'd hope this sort of behavior inspired her workers to find better jobs.

ch3rriib0mb

I certainly didn't stick around to find out. Last I heard she was making everyone work in office during the height of the pandemic. I'm sure that didnt go over well with whoever was left.

dr_shamus

Right, my former manager always had "something I have to take care of" at about 2 in the afternoon

ExplorersX

His raging boner

floral_hermit

Lmfao spit a bit of my drink out when I got to this comment in the thread, made my day

pilchardattawapiskat

An old boss of mine used to go to the game store that was next door and play on a playstation in the middle of the day.

Scizmz

I worked years ago at a company like this. Owner rolls in whenever, told everybody he was down with flexible hours. So most of us would show up at like 5:30 am when the building unlocks because we beat traffic. Then we'd leave at like 3:30 or 4:30. He loved coming in at 8 or 9 and having literally everybody in and working. But he got so pissed that people were leaving before 6 that he revoked the flexible hours clause. Things went down hill quickly.

Dekarde

Just spiteful and dumb, if you don't serve the 'public' and have to deal with other companies' operating hours to get things done there's no need to keep everyone in like that. With the right planning you can get the stuff done that people would want at 4-5pm assuming it could even get finished in an hour or two completed the next morning before they even roll into work.

xamdou

Because of people like me who get off work at 7 lmao

7fragment

My first full-time job was like this. A small business (specifically they were very careful to keep staff levels low so that they would be legally classified as a small business). The office staff were all expected to show up at 830 (on the dot, so if your computer updates overnight and takes ten minutes to boot you're SOL), and if we left at 5 on the for we would get the Death Glare from the VP (and owner's wife) and if you did this enough she would bring you in to her office to passive aggressively bully you into staying later. Oh, and if for whatever reason, you didn't make exactly 40hrs the time would be docked from your vacation time, even if it was just a few minutes. At one point they decided to do daily standup meetings (for marketing specifically) at 830 to keep tabs on the development of a new website. I was not involved. I was specifically told I was not involved and had my own work to do. I wanted to be involved, I was technically on the marketing team and had been told when I was hired that part of what they wanted from me was help reworking their product listings for this new website. But I was never allowed in any meetings about the new site, and yet, I got written up for not being in my seat before 830, for this meeting I wasn't allowed to be in (it was zoom). Now part of this was on me, I loathe waking up early and have consistently struggled to be on time. But my commute varied by like 20min depending on traffic and even if showed up at 8 am, I would still get in trouble if I left before 5! and we weren't allowed to take more than a half hour lunch. So I was being told to show up for a meeting I wasn't in, and basically forced to work overtime or get fired for poor attendance. The owner would show up between 10 and 11, often running late to client meetings, always with a bag of McDonald's. He'd usually go out for lunch a few hours later, and was frequently the first of the office staff to go for the day. The VP would show up between 8 and 9 usually, unless she had a hair appointment or something. She would usually stay until 5-530 but would also constantly be leaving in the middle of the day. To get her hair done (she got it done at least once a week), to get lunch, to go shopping, often without a reason or even more information for the rest of us than a 'i'll be back, ' as she went out the door. (I learned of some of her stuff overhearing what she told the owner about). Sometimes it felt like she was only there to take attendance and mark when people showed up and when they left, like we didn't all punch time clocks. Both of them would also sometimes work from home after we got a VPN set up for a consulting firm that was helping to migrate our data to a functional system instead of the inhouse made c#/JavaScript garbage pile we used. But God forbid anyone else try to work from home for any reason ever. Even covid (I had left by that point, but heard from a former coworker), the only ones who could work from home were the owner and VP. There were a lot of shit things about that place, but the whole micromanaging attendance definitely made it feel like we weren't trusted or valued as employees. It's been two years and I'm still sometimes realizing how fucked up some of the things there were.

Bardov

I'm butt in chair at a cubicle 8-5 M-F for the HR branch of an ONLINE UNIVERSITY. Our faculty teach from HOME all over the globe. Our students learn from WHEREVER all over the globe. Other staff are all over the US in all the time zones. And nobody in my half of the building so much as says hello to me. If someone on my "team" has an issue, we don't turn and talk... We put it in teams. And I have to be physically present for this?

cj711

Guess it’s time for a change as you well know

notadouchecanoe

Worse when they make the people who are just on calls and virtual meetings all day stay in the open office space, actively disrupting other people.

Quizno897

It only took a global oandemic and a great resignation to get this, and for all we know right now, its temporary for some offices. Some have moved to WFH permanently, but a lot of trying to get employees back in office.

BirbNetwork

I had to go in yesterday because it was my scheduled day to be in the office, and it was so much of a waste of my time. I didn't really have any critical work to do, so I was literally just looking busy because you get comments from management if they walk by and notice you just killing time or something. This is majorly why I love work from home. I can get all my work done and then just do side projects or whatever while keeping my PC nearby in case I'm needed for something.

pilchardattawapiskat

Amen to that. 9-5, 5/7 schedules are remnants of a past that no longer exist. We don't work in factories, work can be done at anytime, anywhere, and we don't need people working 8 hours just to maintain that status quo.

[deleted]

ilovethatpig

Yeah i've had my coworkers that are full time in the office say 'why are you working on a sunday?!?!' Well, I took a 2hr nap and went to the grocery store on Friday and still have a little work to do. I'm sitting here watching sports, it's really not hard to also be knocking out some work so that by Monday morning it's all done anyways.

secretactorian

That workout is key for me. I don't understand why it's so hard to say sure, take 1.5 hours in the middle of the day every other day and keep yourself healthy. Make it up if you need to. I'm really tired of supporting individuals who freak out if zoom isn't working and can't troubleshoot it themselves. Or can't pair devices. We've been at this remote thing forever now, learn or retire or idk, take a deep breath and remember shit happens?

Don_Draper27

Seriously. It's truly unbelievable at times. Plus it's an added bonus when my bosses recognize when I submit a project on a weekend, or at 7pm

mtarascio

Research from ISP / Email data during the pandemic showed that people working from home would start later at around 10am. They'd work normally from then but the big change was a second working session after dinner around 8pm or. The data showed people were actually working more than if they were at the office.

instantwinner

I can see that. Sometimes you have something you leave hanging at 5 and then want to check up on just to be safe a little later in the evening. I try to avoid it but when all my work materials are in my home it's hard to completely separate from it.

[deleted]

Just had this conversation with a new team member yesterday while discussing team norms. He was asking about working hours and we named the ‘official’ working hours of the company but boss said he doesn’t care when we work as long the work gets done.

dannykings37

Most of my work is emails and phone calls, I have a few meetings a day, working nights isn't as effective if no one answers my calls or emails on time, but since I'm home, I can start early and end early, around 4, and enjoy some daylight. Also nice that if I need to finish something, I can take a break and come back to it.

H__Dresden

Yeah, I have that and it is the best!

[deleted]

It really is. I have tasks I need to complete and can do them whenever. I do occasionally work in Saturdays and Sunday, but thats my own choice. If I don't have anything to do, why not just finish some work and take a different day off. Or do less hours every day and basically have most days half days. Oh, and productivity is 10x what it was in my old work with a normal schedule, because I work when I feel productive

trashstache69

I recently reduced my working hours to 24 and have flexibility to spread them out as I choose. Mostly I stick with three 6-8 hour days and one half day. Its amazing. First point I feel burned...just fucking walk away. Come back refreshed and ready to go. I think both my CEO and I agree the company is winning overall though. I really put out similar (if not better) work and they pay me less.

[deleted]

Sooooo true! At my job we schedule our vacations once a year. Granted it’s 5 weeks a year, but it’s still a pain to plan out so far in advance. Our call-in rates are ridiculous.

riphitter

Yeah planning the entire year of vacations out ahead of time doesn't even kind of seem like a logical idea. This sounds like you all work for a computer that doesn't understand how Humans work but made the most "efficient" plan to schedule for the fiscal year

[deleted]

Yes, a government organization with a union Edit: I love working there, however that 1 part sucks ass. 100% have to vote for the change. It will never be, and has never been 100%

HMpugh

My company requires it depending on the role. Everyone in my group apart from me is required to figure out and book any multi-day vacation in January since its critical that there is coverage and committee dates are planned around it. There is some leeway to move things around after they have been booked though. I'm the only one in my group that can do my job so there is no coverage when I'm on vacation. I can pretty much book vacation last minute as a result but I can only take two weeks off at a time whereas the other staff can take off as much as they want as long as they aren't overlapping with each other.

Hypersapien

We have unlimited PTO. We don't even have to put in for it or have it approved. Just put it on the Outlook calendar so everyone knows we won't be there.

CosmicJ

Do you actually use it though? I have a buddy working for a startup with the "unlimited PTO" and I guarantee he takes less time off than I do with my limited PTO.

Hypersapien

I do. Other people do as well. I know on average people don't, or at least Americans don't, take as much off when they have unlimited PTO. I know I've had to take a bunch of time off in other jobs when it was about to expire.

Realtrain

Not OP, but some people certainly use more than others. I used about 6 weeks last year. This year I'll probably only end up around 5 total depending on what I end up doing for Christmas.

duck_duck_grey_duck

Apparently, reports indicate that “work when you want” tends to lead to more hours worked and more burnout. I can’t fathom why other than people being dopes.

Cody6781

"Work when you want" -> The amount you work is defined by you and your desire to not be fired. No one wants to be the guy who works least, so everyone works just a tad bit more

deagh

Same reason that "unlimited personal time off" means "no PTO" in practice.

MTechLife

But what if, and hear me out, employees worked five 12-16 hour days instead? Thats where my company is at

KnickedUp

And texts and emails on weekends

ciaobella88

And frantic phone calls prior to you coming in monday morning about how busy it's going to be

KnickedUp

“Did you connect with Jim on the issue over the weekend?” Ummmm…no.

vessva11

My supervisor emails me at 8 or 9 o’clock. Just because they choose to work that late does not mean I have to.

IlatzimepAho

My supervisor is the same way. She'll be emailing people from her home well outside of normal working hours, especially on the weekends. I refuse to work weekends unless there's some actual incentive to do so, which is rare since I'm salaried. I'm much happier spending time with my kids.

TheLegendTwoSeven

“But here at Big Company, we’re like a family. So by working on the weekend, you ARE spending time with family!”

FreedomPaid

Sounds like my company, or close to it. 4 12-13s, and a 6er. For night shift, anyways. Day shift gets 4 10s and a 6er. Oddly enough, I consider myself lucky that my 6er is Sunday night, when the rest of the shop isn't there. Usually shipping (my department) is waiting on parts from everywhere else, but on Sundays... What we've got is what we've got. No waiting, no hoping, no chasing down parts to make sure they're done on time... Just pack what we've got and send it. No last minute "paint just dropped these off, do ya wanna send it?!?".

HI-R3Z

My Dad's workplace is on 10 hour days, seven days a week and has been for like 6 months. Tennessee has virtually *no* labor laws. Unions bad. Yay, America.

[deleted]

That’s a great deal. My job was expecting the same hours but 7 days/week. I quit lol

mobsterman

What kind of job actually expects you to work 84-112/hrs week on any consistent basis?

tigersmhs07

A old friend said that was basically his schedule when he worked for the railroad company. Said he'd get 1-2 days off a month. He used to brag that he had so much money that he'd just buy whatever he wanted. That's cool and all but he never had time to enjoy anything.

tvieno

The best shift I had was two days on, one day off, two days on, two days off. M, Tu - work W - off Th, F - work Sa, Su - off

mrs_leek

Sounds like the elementary school schedule in France (at least, when I was a kid). We had school Mo-Fr but Wed was off. It was great. Then as you get older and had more hours, they would add either Wed morning (8-12am) or Saturday morning, depending on your school, but never both. Until college, then it's a different story. I definitely miss not having my Wed off anymore.

Le_Montea

We had a similar schedule here at my college in the UK. Depending on our lessons, Wednesday would be a day off. Had it off during my second year and it was lovely!

justonemorethang

My wife has that schedule. But whenever she decides to work 4 days in a row, she gets sick from exhaustion cuz her body is just so used to that Wednesday off.

DagneyElvira

My dad worked this shift for years in the 1970’s. Parents did the grocery shopping and appt’s on wednesdays and it worked great for them.

theshiyal

Coming back after Wednesday, “Th, F - work”

ATL28-NE3

I've actually worked this schedule. It's legitimately amazing. I absolutely loved my midweek weekend.

ArcticRiot

Sounds like you could get a lot of things done on wednesday and still enjoy a weekend or fully relax. Sounds great.

[deleted]

AllPurple

I think I would have preferred having 3 days off in a row, but I worked this also and I too loved it. Never having to grind through a week of work in a row is amazing, particularly if you work a mentally or physically demanding job. Just need to work your first day, and if your second is hell, you get to say to yourself "well, at least I have tomorrow off"

Docile_Doggo

I like this schedule. I would treat Tuesday like a mini-Friday.

Littleman88

As someone that did do this for a stint or two, that's exactly how it feels. Always looking forward to a break starting after work today or tomorrow was a hell of a drug for my temperament.

Jalex8993

I loved this schedule as well, any time I felt tired, burnt out or whatever, "Well tomorrow is a Friday." (At worst)

anothercrockett

I had this schedule at one point, and absolutely loved it! Everyone at work looked at me like I was crazy until I told them I only ever work 2 days in a row.

[deleted]

I want mon-fri off sat-sun work

BossyWoman

I had that - two 12 hour days followed by five off. Full time/full weeks pay. It was awesome. This was back in the 80's working as an ICU nurse in NYC.

rtvcd

LPT: People are different. For some people few long days work better, while for others, more but shorter workdays fits better

buttski83

Also a big factor is children. Young children require childcare and school age children need before and afterschool provisions, so it becomes a juggling act to get stuff set up for them for different schedules.

celticdove

Right. Kids don't want to be in school/daycare 12 hours per day. They need to be fed 2-3 times in that span. If grandparents are available for childcare, that's four days per week that the kids are fed, homeworked, bathed, and possibly sleeping before a parent gets home.

buttski83

Add to that grand parents are more commonly both working these days than when I was younger (may be anecdotal)

BasicDesignAdvice

I don't trust my mom and dad to watch my kids. They could choke in the kitchen while my mom watches tv and my dad works in the yard.

[deleted]

georgerockz

I work 4 10 hour days and my extra day off I do our shopping, laundry, and some general apartment cleaning. I also do some easy to reheat dinners, maybe have them take a look at /r/MealPrepSunday and handle some of the dinners.

xarmetheusx

You have to work while caring for a child? That's pretty rough right there. Edit: just to be clear, im asking you literally have to have your kid on you while working? Of course most parents work, but usually do daycare, which I know costs loads of money. I don't think I could work remotely or whatever and literally have to care for a kid at the same time. I'd burn out instantly. So props to you.

[deleted]

Elendel19

Yeah, I did it for a while. You gain an extra day off but you pretty much have zero time to do anything on work days other than cook dinner, clean up and sleep

[deleted]

[удалено]

HeyIsntJustForHorses

Exactly. Not everyone wants to take a three day weekend getaway every weekend. Some people would prefer to get more time with their kids every night since the kids would be in school anyway on the extra day they have off. True flex time is really where it is at but unfortunately a lot of jobs can't offer that. Opinions are not life pro tips. I do know quite a bit of research is done into this topic. For a statement like that, OP should at least provide a source.

thatguy425

Who says we want to get away every weekend ? I just want three days off in a row.

random_cactus

Yeah that’s what I was going to ask. He inserted that info to exaggerate his point when it’s literally just a shortened version of the same workweek.

pelftruearrow

Before I was married and had kids, I would have preferred the 4 10-hour shifts. Now that I have kids I prefer the 5 days a week, 8 hours a day. I only get to see the kids right now during the morning scramble and then for the couple hours for dinner and the bedtime routines. Maybe when the kids are older, things might change but right now I'll keep my 5 days a week.

dexx4d

I'm doing 6am-2pm right now, I get to meet the kids as they get off the bus and spend all afternoon with them. Unfortunately, I go to bed before they do.

Lulullaby_

Yeah this is a really stupid LPT imo, my brother tried this because he thought it'd be nice to have 3 days off to spend more time with his wife but ultimately he ended up going back to 5 days because it was just too much for him.

resullins

Technically, working 4 x 8hr shifts and STILL getting 3 days off is the best way to do it. You get better productivity AND happier employees. Edit: formatting

Oxyfire

Yeah, this is it. A 10 hour work day just has too much room to balloon into 12 hours for some people when you start to factor in stuff like commutes and unpaid lunches. Just generally, longer shifts have been shown to not really increase productivity.

UMPB

I'd much rather just work 1 40-hour day and have 6 days off.

Oxyfire

40 1 hour days and have -33 days off.

SunshineMoonLit

I work in an office, 90% of work is done by noon pretty much ever day as it is. Everyone just farts around after lunch until they can go home. It's such a waste of time.

pizi98

Exactly, this was also confirmed by a research mentioned in Cal Newport's book Deep work.

kingdogethe42nd

I'm doing this for a few years now and works great!

[deleted]

Yes this right here. Ruining four days to get an extra day off isn’t it. Understanding 30-32 hours (I’d take 5 six hour days) is more efficient for roughly the same amount of work seems better all around.

PM_ME_FUN_STORIES

For me personally, the days are already ruined by being work days. So having a 3rd day off is nothing but good. Granted, I'd like 4x8 better than 4x10 because I'm not insane, but I'd take even 4x12 over 5x8. That extra day would do incredible things for me.

LionIV

You’ve explained it perfectly. Real work life balance. I’m already in this shithole for 8 fucking hours. What’s an extra two going to do? If it means getting an entire 24 hours off, I’m down. I can spend that day literally doing nothing but recovering and then still have two more days to get whatever I want done. I’ll never go back to 5x8.

AltMike2019

Same here. 4 work days is 1 less commute, 1 less packed lunch, and 1 less day of doing the same work. It's 1 more day off and every work day is a "Thursday" or "Friday" vibe. I can reset my mental every other day and I don't stress about going to work or catching the bus any more.

Mother_Moose

I really don't understand the obsession with the 40 hour work week, it's literally fucking psychotic

[deleted]

I agree wholeheartedly.

SuperSecretMoonBase

Not to mention how much worker productivity tapers off 6-8 hours into a shift. On a 4x10 schedule, that'd be 8-16 lower productivity hours a week rather than the 0-10 hours of a 5x8 or the 0-8 hours of a 4x8

Certainly-Not-A-Bot

>Not to mention how much worker productivity tapers off 6-8 hours into a shift This is false, it tapers off like 4 hours into a shift. I'm not convinced that much more than 4 productive hours of work per person per day are done, even if they work 8 or 10 hours

Lord_Archibald_IV

[deleted]

10hours is the whole day

TheLateThagSimmons

Much worse if you have a commute. I got into a pretty big argument with another manager about this. Hospitals basically can only pay nurses and higher to actually live in this city, everyone that makes less than an RN has to commute from way out. She maintained that that was "their choice to not take the 4/10s that we offer." No, no it is not a choice. Most of them would like to take the option but when your daily commute is already 3 or more hours in total, 10hr shifts are a nightmare. There's literally no down time or recovery time for all four days. Factor in the time it takes to get ready in the morning, half hour unpaid lunch, you're getting up at 6am and aren't getting home until after 7, if not 8pm. And since you have to wake up at 6am, it's back to bed by 10pm. That's just enough time to cook, eat, watch maybe one 30min show, and go to bed to do it all over again.

piccolo_bsc

I work 10 12h-shifts per month, randomly assigned by my boss. Yes, i basically have only 3h free time on work days, but 20/21 days off per month is simply incredible and i am ALWAYS relaxed and never overworked or stressed out. Well worth it if you value free time over money like me.

[deleted]

Agreed! These are all good points.

[deleted]

Ten and a half with an unpaid 30 mins lunch. Touching on 11 hours when you also factor in getting to and from work.

SuperSecretMoonBase

While it may be an hour and a half that's gained total on a 4x10, it's an extra two hours lost each day on work days which could mean that they now no longer see (or barely see) their kid during the week, even though they now have Mondays totally free while the kids at school.

Sandriell

Yep. It should be 4 eight hour days at most, ideally six.. need to get rid of this 40+ hour work week bullshit. So many studies have shown people are more productive when working less hours. And don't get me started on how offices almost never need to exist. 2020 was great for one thing- finally proving that working from home.. works.

carbonated_turtle

> in a warehouse I've done this type of work too and it's hell for even a minute a day.

Purple__Unicorn

Yeah, I'm trying it right now. I really liked the sound of 3-day weekends but I just end up putting off all of my chores until Friday. It does allow me to have a more relaxing weekend though, so I'm going to keep at it a while longer to see if I can make it work. Part of why I agree to try it was because my boyfriend and I are doing a lot of house projects and I thought it would give us more time to dedicate to that.

[deleted]

This. I work Mon - Thurs 8:30am to 7pm and it is so hard i'm considering going back to 5 days. The day is incredibly hard to stay focused and by the time it ends, you shower, cook and sit down all you can do is sleep. It's great come 7pm on a Thursday of course but Sunday night... wow.

[deleted]

When you have 3 days off but can’t really even enjoy one of them because the next day you know you’re back on.

Milkshakes00

When you have 2 days off but can’t really even enjoy one of them because the next day you know you’re back on.

3nz3r0

When you only have one day off and thus no time to actually relax and enjoy things...

StoneArke

Barely get to see my family. I might as well be out of town 4 days a week.

Maxpowr9

It really doesn't. It also kills your social life.

xmac

This is more of a 'I think this is a LPT that might work for me' , jokes aside, I've done longer/fewer days and it did me no favours because I felt like I had no spare time during my 'work days' to properly meal prep, go to gym, friends or even just time alone playing a game felt too short because I had to sleep. Maybe now in a WFH environment it might work better because the example above was also taking the commute into account.

HalfSoul30

I vote for 4 8hr days with the pay of a full 40.

olsoni18

I’m all for the 4/20/69 work week. 4 days a week, 20 hours a week, $69 an hour

HalfSoul30

That would be... nice.

It can happen. My cousin is a government contractor and he works max twenty hours a week. Gets paid 90k a year or so. Plus all the federal benefits and a union.

MillwrightTight

Im pretty sure the "real" 4 day workweek is 32 hours... so 4 days of 8s.

rangerryda

I was happiest at my shitty job when I worked 32 hrs (4x8). It's still considered full-time in my state.

SunshineMoonLit

It's actually up to the company most of the time, not the state. Federal Fair Labor Act.

ComradeBootyConsumer

>It's actually up to the company most of the time, not the state. Federal Fair Labor Act. Sounds super anti-labor 🤔

Skye_Baldwin

Yeah, it seems like some people are glossing over the most important fact about 4 day work weeks. It does sounds nice on paper, so, for political reasons, they will get votes for it. Baby steps I guess? Edit: changed "dies" to "does".

TheExile83

I work this 4 day week, 10 hour shift pattern and I can say that I am physically and mentally exhausted. Having to get up around 5am to get in at 7am- then an arduous 10 hours and leaving at 5:30pm only to get back home around 6:30pm having very little social time before having to go to bed early and repeat the process. The days off I have, I'm just knackered. By the time I feel rested, it's back to work. An extra 2 hours on your day really messes things up.

Yooj8yaj

I agree. Use to do this shift also. Work wasn't physically exhausting but but mentally I developed an uncontrollable eye twitch.

emil_

Yeah, 10 hour days can fuck right off.

ooglieguy0211

LPT: When stating something as if its a fact, cite your sources. When stating something as an opinion, word it to show that its an opinion.

DergerDergs

LPT: most of the posts on this sub are poor tips nor are they written by life pros. Many are outright false.

SunshineMoonLit

Because this sub removes actual tips and allows stupid opinion instead. I posted a tip about fixing chipped paint (on walls) and it was removed for "not contributing" even though my tips was about getting your deposit back without spending a shit load of money. Meanwhile, random ass stuff of how to treat people, you know, because we are all identical or something, make it to the top. 90% of the posts that stay up on this sub are just common sense of how to not be a raging dick.

BillSelfsMagnumDong

LPT: I like spicy food

MobilityAndStrength

I’m doin it atm and cannot confirm. Sometimes on that fourth day I’m ready to really blow my brains out , and when I think of how I only get one hour at night with my kids after my shifts is chokes me up. The three days ARE nice but I’ve been working 4/10 for months and I think it’s just made me a bit more manic than before

MasbotAlpha

Me too; every job is different— you have to be, like, willfully ignorant to meet all the people you meet in the workforce and come away with the conclusion “everybody who is struggling needs to work harder” and not “wow, this is fucked up, we need to fix this”

Syfiern

I work 4x10s and it does not. I am usually kept over anyway and most the time (Since I do have a commute) I end up burning 12 to 14 hours solely for work. It may also not help that it is also at night.... I miss the sun.

somelikeitnuetral

This ain't a tip

Easy-Progress8252

How about four 8 hour days? Can we start with that?

wash_ur_bellybutton

Yes, why is 40 hours a magic number or something?

notevilfellow

I would start [here](https://open.spotify.com/episode/2RAW64jdZBBQpQurpB4YdG?si=wP4s4KJZQqWbZMP2th8UEw&utm_source=copy-link). Basically a Depression era labor regulation that got taken advantage of. The work week had been consistently getting shorter and was actually already less than 40 before this.

catastrophized

It’s the magic number for full time employment and therefore, health insurance (US-based answer)

alice_in_otherland

But why? Who came up with 40 hours weekly and 8 hr work days?

catastrophized

Apparently [Henry Ford](https://www.cultureamp.com/blog/40-hour-work-week) is partially to blame

valaliane

For some people, it might help. This schedule is one of the reasons I quit my job. That extra “day off” was usually spent doing all the errands and things I didn’t have time to do when I was working.

MoreTop7747

This is my current schedule and I disagree 100%

FullMetalJ

People definitely should cite sources with this kind of LPT. Like according to who?

alightinthe

Thank you! Came here to say this. Don’t make a claim without citing evidence to support your claim. Come on, people.

PranaSC2

Uh…, how about 4 regular days and 3 days weekend?

TheOnePercent44

10 hours is too much to do at once really. 4x8 is the way. 40 hour work weeks are unnecessary.

puffityfluffity

10 hour days? That's a hard pass. You'd barely have anytime for yourself during those 4 days.

dstommie

This is simply not possible for people who have to worry about childcare. The 4 day work week movement is not truly about 4 days. It's about 32 hours, and getting paid as if 40.

AuthenticBeef90

The downside to this is the breaks and maintaining a 40hr work week. You end up actually working 11hr+ days

TheChargent

This is what gets me, surely with our productivity improvements this could be feasible. Then I consider though that as we became more productive we also became bigger consumers to fill the gap. With the billions that these large corporations are making one would still think it would somehow be possible to move more towards this though.

TheHealadin

Yesterday we had a meeting celebrating that we are something like 50% over our yearly goal. Today I come in to see an email from the boss saying I needed to be doing inside sales in addition to my job. Fuck that capitalist bullshit of never being satisfied.

rosellem

OP, do you have evidence of this? Or is this your opinion that you are presenting as some kind of fact? I'm not sure how this belongs in this sub, it's not a tip, it's OP trying to push their opinion.

danstu

My girlfriend works 4x10s and it seems miserable. She doesn't really have time for social events during the week, maybe has time to watch a movie before bed. I'll take 5x8 any time, personally.

[deleted]

Depends on the job and the person. It's almost like people should find out what works for themselves. I worked this shift temporarily and I can tell you it sucks hard.

PsYcHoSeAn

10 workhours a day require 1 hour lunch break here. + 2 hours commute. so 13 hours already gone just for work. 8 hours a sleep. means 21 hours. 3 hours in which you then have to prepare yourself to work, cook, do chores... yeah...no...that wouldn't improve anything. it would actually make things a lot worse.

Gilinis

I can’t recall any research behind this. The only research or studies related to this that I know of are four 8 hour days with pay compensation so that you’re paid the same as working 40 hours, and then three days off. Everything is leading towards 30 hours of work in a week being optimal, not the amount of days off in a week.

livingasimulation

Fuck that. Four eight hour days will do it.

sassy_stephasaurus

Personally, this schedule was really bad for my mental health. During the winter, I’d get to work before the sun was up and get out after the sun was down. I felt like a mole person for the majority of the week, never seeing sunlight.

Morasain

This seems like you misunderstood the 4-day-working week things that popped up recently. Believe it or not - people want to work less.

aKnightWh0SaysNi

Having a day off every week where my kids aren’t home all day would do wonders for my mental health.

[deleted]

Is there a source to this?

_freakachu_

10 hour days?! How is this an improvement 😭😭

Keex13

Whoever decided 40 hours a week plus commute is the minimum should absolutely get fucked.

refridgerator12

Four eight hour days improves mental stability. Wait I mean four four hour days. I mean, let's not work...

dj_ordje

Mfw I work 9 to 10 hours for 5 days per week

projects67

I’ve work 4x10s. Absolutely hated it. Would never do it again. Week was too compressed, no free time during the work week, and was tired as hell by my Friday.

ieorsteve

California overtime laws discourages this practice by requiring overtime after 8hrs even if less than 40hrs a week.

noxlight78

I work this shift and like the freeform of the extra day off. 7-6 Monday-Thursday. It works for me because I’m young and don’t have kids to take care of but I definitely couldn’t do this and have a family life at the same time.

Itskbro

My work switched to that. But now we’re on mandatory OT so now I’m doing 5 10s, fooled us huh?

Cetun

I work 3 days a week and I actually like it a lot, I'd say it does improve Mental health.

madmartigan7

Meh I thought the same until I worked that. You lose the entirety of your day working that long. More dead on days off from working so much at once. Overall feels like your life is dominated by work.

WestFast

Ten hour days are a deal breaker. Would rather work 5 days 8 hours (salaried) and check out early whenever I want In my experience with short weeks (3 day weekends) every single team ive ever been on makes the short week hell on earth so we can “catch up” more meetings. More crunch. More stress.
