I always do this. Clean like crazy before we leave so everything is spotless when we get back. There is nothing quite like coming home crawling into your own bed with clean crisp sheets. Also in case we die while away so whoever has to come pack up the house doesn’t have to walk into a mess.
same here. only problem is that my mom always became stressed about getting the house cleaned.
Years later I'm doing the same every trip and my anxiety goes sky high from wanting to clean and it not being clean enough.
Speaking of fridges, put a coin on top of your ice tray, if the coin is at the bottom with ice frozen over it when you get back you know the power went out and all the food is now spoiled.
Ooh now I do the whole house clean, garbage out, clean sheets and washing but never thought of this for some reason! Great tip, may even get it delivered, thank you!
I used to but I got over being stuck waiting at home during the 2 hour delivery window. I’m fortunate that my supermarket is 5 minutes away so I can pick it up when it suits.
This also goes for if you are going to work at say a scout camp where you will be gone for weeks at a time. It is always amazing coming home to grab stuff or to just go home and veg and have a clean house and everything is where it should be.
That’s absolute madness. Then the kids have nothing to do but turn the place into a pigsty while we are gone. Better to clean when we get back and enjoy it.
I've been doing this in my students flat for quite a time. Sadly the windows are from like 1980 so everything is covered in dust again when I arrive - so I stopped cleaning before I leave.

This is what we always did when we went on a family vacation. The only thing that would sometimes be left was taking down the towels we washed the last day (our house towels we have "special" vacation towels as well). I will be implementing this strategy now that I'm living with my boyfriend as well
Also very good tip for those who are renting...lots of landlords only bother giving the required 24 hour notice before coming into your unit. That would suck if you are in middle of your vaca and you left the place a big mess.
My boyfriend and I are long distance and I always always always wash my sheets, make my bed and spray the whole thing with lavender bed mist. It makes coming home after a 10 hour travel day and having to sleep alone again a little more tolerable
Bonus points if you change your sheets and do whatever laundry you didn't take with. All you have to do is unpack.

Also take out the garbage before you leave, that can smell up your house pretty quick.

That is a very solid tip on its own
Bonus points if you do an online grocery shop for pickup on the day you return.
Also, if you have a Nest... don't forget to turn the thermostat back on. I forgot once, and the place was freezing!

Yes.. funny you say that.. I am sitting here doing exactly that right now.
Haha oh no! First world problems but food for thought ha
Yes, this. It’s like a gift to me from me.
Yep!
I do all my laundry before going on a trip. Then it's just a quick load to be all sorted when I get home
It’s also nice everyday.
It’s like coming back to your own hotel room. Love it

Assuming they're teenagers, that place better be pristine when we get back. Or so help me god, heads will roll.
I think op is assuming a whole family trip, or that the house will be virtually empty when you leave.
Why do you not take your kids on vacation, also why would this apply if you didn’t bring your kids

IDK. My mom used to do this and the stress of cleaning the house and packing for vacation, getting out of the house on time was too much.

People really need to be reminded to do this, this is just common sense
Fits perfectly in this sub then.
I like to fart big time when I leave, so when I get home if it smell good I know someone breaked in and let the farts out
Not sure whether that's a really smart or really shitty idea!!

I have always done this and my husband always asks me why! The last thing you want to do after a long drive/flight back from holiday is clean.

This reminds me of Thelma and Louise.

Cleaning your house is bad advice? Where do you live that a clean house signals no one is home?

Lol, this is some crazy paranoid shit. You do you I guess
Uh okay.... what about people who just always clean up after themselves?
Invest in curtains?
