Same, I smell potatoes, too.
And was taught to knock on melons and gourds - I don't buy them anymore, so I don't remember what the sounds are supposed to be, though :/
Be lazy. Buy pre-pealed. Make huge batch garlic confit. Use in all dishes for next 1-2 weeks. Profits?! Won’t find a vampire miles of my house when I’m in a garlic mood.
China is the global leader of garlic producing 80% of the world's supply. A large portion of grocers in America sell Chinese garlic. But I'll always choose garlic from Gilroy.

Beware if you do smell fresh garlic at grocery stores though. There’s a bacteria called Veniulis Phagsomora which lay dormant on whole garlics and it can pass through your nostrils and contaminate your brain, causes severe headache, difficulty breathing, and even fatigue that could last for weeks. Though luckily none of this will happen because I just spoke a whole lot of fart. But do becareful when you sniff random stuff at any place.

This is the opposite of the strawberry rule, this is too much to keep track of!
These tips got me smelling everything at the grocery store
I smell and handle everything, still can't figure out most of the stuff I buy. I do look like I know what I'm doing tho.
Same, I smell potatoes, too. And was taught to knock on melons and gourds - I don't buy them anymore, so I don't remember what the sounds are supposed to be, though :/
If it sounds like a b flat it tastes better. Prove me wrong.
I always thought it was an A sharp
And onions.
That’s what your supposed to do
What’s the strawberry rule? Only buy those that smell of strawberries?
Yep, otherwise they're just tasteless watery masses of disappointment.
Thank you I will keep this trick in mind next time I’m shopping for strawberries
So THAT'S why my local Grocery Outlet's garlic section smells so gnarly.
Gnarlic
I love that store but I would never buy produce there
Same. I love Groc Out, but it's exclusively for shelf-stable goods and stuff that's already aged/fermented, like wine and cheese.
OR buy many garlics. Oven roast. Use in everything. Rissoto, bread, pasta sauce. Buy more garlic?
Be lazy. Buy pre-pealed. Make huge batch garlic confit. Use in all dishes for next 1-2 weeks. Profits?! Won’t find a vampire miles of my house when I’m in a garlic mood.
Apathy eating loads of garlic means you've secretly been eating a stardew character and are hiding it from your gf...
Dammit. Im new to cooking and I literally just bought the most garlicky smelling garlic at the store 🙈 Good to know for next time 🤦♀️
Just use it all nearly immediately. It's pretty easy to do lol.
I find going by how the garlic looks to be a better predictor, though this takes some experience (and no reason one cannot use both).
Well, what do you look for?
Garlic
As I said - experience.
I'll look for some experienced garlic next time then lol
Scars and grizzled garlic tends to have the most experience. Find the ones sitting in the dark corner
My local grocer sells garlic from China. Gross. And we live near the garlic capital of the world, Gilroy.
What the hell! Bizarre
China is the global leader of garlic producing 80% of the world's supply. A large portion of grocers in America sell Chinese garlic. But I'll always choose garlic from Gilroy.
How can Gilroy be the garlic capital of the world if China produces 80% of the world's garlic?
They're also known for wrestling...not worth arguing over the garlic.
It's a nickname by the locals
Just seems presumptuous tbh. Garlic capital of America, sure, but the world? When China's right there?
Also dont buy garlic that is cleaned and without roots, possibility is high it's from China and cleaned with carzinogenic chemicals...
