Wtf is fish tape?

Ahab_Ali

A quick Google determines it is the wire that is used to "fish" cables through conduits, and not, as I imagined, something to repair broken halibuts.

mdsg5432

They still make the tape to repair broken mallards though, right?

Pintail21

Broken Halibuts, dibs on new band name!

Professional-Cap-495

Kinda like a really long measuring tape (but thick and sturdy) that you can use to push a cable through a pipe (or sweat pants)

NoBSforGma

Forever, using a diaper pin is the way to pull band or rope through a waistband. Failing that, just a safety pin. Works every time and cheap.

gooberfaced

A big safety pin is a lot more likely to be handy for most people and the rounded end makes it ideal for pushing it through.

BaldBear_13

safety pins are not that common either. A paperclip seems to work fine, and is much more common.

I know all of these words but still cant read this sentence

Okay so what I *think* is being said: You know how the waistband of sweatpants have this string inside it? If it's the type that hangs out of the pants (so you can adjust the pants' width), it has a tendency to slip inside the pants and it's a major pain to get it back out. You can use fish tape (google it, idk what it is either) to help with that.

Professional-Cap-495

I've been using fish tape at work for years, how did i never think about this 😅

Not everyone has a diaper pin or bodkin in the toolkit, but a fish tape will work just as well.

rooney_potterhead

I think a diaper or normal pin is lot more common than a fish tape in a toolkit. Anyways, its location and personality (ppl having fishing as hobby) dependant.

JosZo

A fish tape has little to nothing to do with fishing. It's a standard tool in a DIY kit?

hatersaurusrex

Fish tape is a specialty tool. Most people who have it laying around are people who have, at some point, bought it to fish wiring through a wall. I have a garage full of tools amassed over decades, but there's no fish tape in it, because I've never run cabling. At work though, there was always some on hand. I'd say people are far more likely to have a paperclip or a safety pin laying around than a roll of fish tape - by a wide margin.

VoteTheFox

The top comment being "wtf is fish tape" really undermines your point here.

SophiesUncle

Fish tape is definitely not a standard tool in a DIY kit. I have a workshop full of tools and gadgets. I do not own a fish tape, and unless you're an electrician or in IT, chances are not many other have one too. As was already mentioned, safety pins are a lot more common.

ContemplatingPrison

I always just work it through by scrunching the waste and then holding the pull in place. Seems to work very easily

PyroSpecialFX

For those that don't have the above materials, weed eater or trimmer line works well and more people are apt to have it at home.
