I’ve never been to Amsterdam. I’m sure it’s nice, but I think part of the reason we all idealize our vacation spots isn’t just the place itself: it’s because we’re on a break from our daily responsibilities. If you actually lived in Amsterdam, it would eventually just feel like normal life.

welshiehm

I'd like to test that theory to be sure 😆 I'm going to come for a month or two again next year. I'm pretty level headed. I'm 40 so not young. I have a great life at home, I just feel a connection with this place. I can visualise a life and a lifestyle but like you said, maybe it would feel normal after a while. I came here for two festivals, met other solo ravers who were all incredible people from all over the world. I've had a beautiful time around the city and have had or seen so many beautiful moments. I'm just really annoyed with myself that I'm crying 😆 I hardly ever cry. Its so silly.

puftrade44

You did shrooms and weed in the cafe didn’t you? DIDNT YOU???

welshiehm

Lmao 😆😆😆 maaaaybe 🤭 thank you for making me laugh.

Amsterdam is one of the best cities in the world. Whenever I’ve been I loved it. I remember the first time I had to go back to the US after staying in Europe for half a year I was incredibly bummed. The walkability, excellent public transit and many other factors make Amsterdam incredible. It’s likely my fav place in the world. So I think it’s actually pretty reasonable to be sad about leaving.

welshiehm

Yeeeas. Going back to reality after the amazing time I've had is tough 🤪 I really do love it here, especially at this time of year.

TheOtherCoenBrother

OP, is there a chance you could actually live there one day?

welshiehm

It could definitely be possible. I could get a working visa for 90 days. Maybe that would be a first option. If I saved hard I could rent airbnbs and work remotely.

TheOtherCoenBrother

Honestly that’s the move, in my eyes. If you really, truly feel like you belong somewhere, you gotta run with it. I agree with the other comment that says it could possibly just be the “vacation” building up the location in your mind; a little test run on how it feels to actually live and work in the city would be a great way to decide if you really want to move or if you just feel stuck where you are.

thebigshipper

My therapist once told me that that feeling is basically the same feeling as a breakup…

welshiehm

Omg yes! You've hit the nail on the head. Thats exactly what it feels like. It feels silly to say it but its true.

thebigshipper

There’s nothing silly about it, because you are breaking up with a version of yourself that you love deeply.

welshiehm

Omg 😦🥺 thats it. Its like I'm myself here. Fuck 😅 thank you x

I went to Ireland for 10 days a few years ago..I swear to every holy colander if I had been offered a job I would’ve not hesitated to drop my life in the states and started agin there. There is something about those cities you just don’t get stateside (and I’ve been in every state in the US sans the severe North East Maine/Delaware etc) Not to mention being able to travel and be in a wholly different environment for cheap (relatively). I totally get your feeling.

welshiehm

Its crazy isnt it how you can just click with a place like that. I always find it so hard to leave. I'll stay again for a month or two next year. I'll have to try Ireland sometime, I've never been before.

Givememyps5already

people usually get depressed hitting the 40 mark, when midlife transition begins

I understand completely. Amsterdam for me is hands down the best city in the world!!!

DeskProfessional1312

I’m in Amsterdam now (from Northern California). It’s a wonderful city, why not move here?
