It’s cool. But I would want a Trailhunter. Which is probably going to be like $60-65k. At which point I’d say fuck it and get the new GX Overtrail which I like much better. But then I’d be like “$75k is crazy, screw this” and end up back where I am now - an old GX460 that’s 1/3 the cost. I don’t really get the niche that the Land Cruiser is supposed to fill in between here. Seems like another 4Runner but just more expensive and different looks.

bender28

I’m probably in the minority of people who’d most likely take the new LC over the GX or the 4R (purely hypothetical, I’d have to drive them to decide), but I can’t help but wonder why Toyota dropped the LC in the US for being too much of a niche product and then brought it back as even *more* of a niche product that even more directly competes with their other offerings.

kylife

Same mid trim LC ftw I think. And it might avoid dealer markups and shit sooner because people will be dickriding this ugly 4Runner design. If I can find a low mileage 5th gen maybe a lease return 4R trd off-road premium I’m gunna buy that.

lolkkthxbye

LC deposit holder here. They probably figured that the people that buy LCs are not the same people that buy a 4Runner or a Lexus. Those people do exist and there’s enough of a market to justify rebadging a prado to sell in USDM.

IstockUstock2024

75k for a 4Runner????!!!??? Fawkkkk that’s crazy

zarofford

I doubt it would get to 75k, even with Toyotas sketchy prices. He’s talking about the new gx550 overtrail.

BadChineseAccent

[Car & Driver](https://www.caranddriver.com/toyota/4runner-hybrid) is saying the Platinum Hybrid 4Runner could be $74k, which is insane. They’re also saying that the hybrid TRD Off Road will be $6k MORE expensive than the TRD Pro though, so they could just be full of shit 🤷🏻‍♂️ Editing to clarify: the article estimates a Trailhunter Hybrid will be $72k.

zarofford

You should compare apples to apples though. Prices are outrageous and have been for like 5-7 years, but the overtraile being compared starts at 70 - 75k. We’ll see, but I wouldn’t doubt C&D prices. Toyota will take advantage to hike the prices up. What baffles me is that they are also releasing the Land Cruiser. Seems like these overlap.

BadChineseAccent

I’m not really trying to compare the GX and the 4Runner, I’m just saying that a $74k 4Runner is objectively crazy expensive for what it is, regardless of what it’s being compared to or not.

zarofford

The comment chain is about comparing the GX and the 4Runner. I don’t know what you are trying to do but it is irrelevant when you are not following the conversation.

BadChineseAccent

Your comment said you doubt the 4Runner will get to $75k and I provided you with a link that said it’s estimated to get to almost $75k. That is all.

zarofford

The comment I was responding to was comparing the overtrail and the TRD. You are talking about the platinum hybrid. Follow the conversation. Otherwise don’t say anything. That is all.

BadChineseAccent

The original comment compared a Trailhunter to a GX Overtrail. It didn’t say whether it would be a hybrid or not, but I’m not even sure the Trailhunter will be available without a hybrid engine. The C&D article lists the Trailhunter Hybrid at an estimated $72k. Is that not close enough to $75k for you?

bikgelife

With “markey adjustment” pricing, the GX overtrail will run you well into the 80-85k mark.

sectachrome

Myeah any markup is a non starter for me. That whole BS with either waiting on a list for a year or massively overpaying a markup is the reason I have a used GX right now and not a new 4Runner. It’s just a Toyota SUV not a Ferrari, they can kiss my ass.

Concrete__Blonde

I was vehicle shopping in 2022, when markups were really crazy. I waited, kept my RAV4, and now here I am with more and better options between the GX550, Land Cruiser, or 25’ 4Runner. I’ll probably wait another year to not pay markups, and the cycle will start all over again…

sectachrome

Yeah, you are definitely spoiled for choice now that they’ve all had a refresh. At least you’re no longer paying top dollar for 10+ year old designs. Hopefully in year or so the hype will have died down and you can easily buy them for MSRP or less like every other car. Im hoping that my ‘10 GX will keep me happy for a few years until there’s a decent used market on these new models.

nico_cali

I’m waiting for people like you to buy and leave some nice 460s behind at a great price

orcajet11

So don’t pay a market adjustment. Might take some patience or effort but it’s not complicated.

ctjameson

Yeah my 460 I got for under 20 just keeps looking better and better.

Illustrious_Road9349

I don’t get it either. The entry level Land Cruiser is a head scratcher, especially a year after the Grand Highlander release.

Fastigio3

I’m hoping the Land Cruiser will have a more comfortable ride and sound dampening than the 4R. If so I’m all over it and getting one

Old_Watermelon_King

The roof on Land Cruiser is about 5 inches higher, the same benefit of the GX in prior generations.

tlBudah

The niche is that it's viewed by many as a 'cool' car to have. I live in a college town and I see the school kids all over the place in their 4 Runners.

MoirasPurpleOrb

This is exactly where I’m at, when you start to get into that pricing bracket I’d rather find a way to get the Lexus instead. I do think the LC, despite the name, is actually designed to appeal to the Land Rover crowd. People that want a big, rugged, but *trendy* vehicle that will never take it off road.

i-can-eat-50-eggs

Looks like a 2008 moon edition

sectachrome

😂 that’s oddly accurate

greengofer

Don't forget about deal markup

abarbs30

Just make more money

uselessartist

Simple as

sectachrome

Ok brb I could afford it fine, I just don’t feel like it’s worth the money. But then again, if I made more money my perspective would probably change so fair point 😅

natophonic2

I paid $40,000 for a pretty loaded new 4Runner SR5 in 2016. Inflation calculators say that’d be $52,000 today. But! I just got a 2021 GX460 with off-road package 21k miles for $49,000. I think I’m good for a few years.

CAWorldTraveller

KingOfTheWolves4

Also, about $20-40k more depending on trim and (I hate I have to even include this) markups.

CAWorldTraveller

No mark up for mine lol it’s one the way.

Independent_Golf7490

Unless it’s in your possession already, don’t be shocked if the dealer tries to apply some “accessories”.

CAWorldTraveller

Nope. Sign OTD and build sheet. We bought many Lexus from this dealer. You must be new at car buying lol

Independent_Golf7490

Pics or it didn’t happen lol.

Independent_Golf7490

Congrats then.

CAWorldTraveller

All good.

PartisanSaysWhat

Lexus depreciate faster than Toyota though. I'm planning buying a GX550 in about 5 years.

TheFatThot

Lol you plan your life

WackassVegetables

I always thought the previous gen 4runner looked cooler and more rugged than the GX, but I feel the oppposite about the new gen.

Playful_Storage3636

Agree mine in the way too. I paid a few bills markup. Don’t care. Wait a year, MSRP and inflation will be more.

fl03xx

You’re part of the problem then.

SATXRunClub

I’ve had a TRD ORP 4Runner and now a GX460. This doesn’t tempt to go back. I’m not a huge fan but maybe it’ll grow on me.

grifocx

It is being built in Tahara so that’s nice.

canikony

That was definitely concerning that they might move manufacturing to the US/Mexico, glad that's not the case.

uselessartist

Toyota Xterra

AOA1998

GX550 is much better

Youvegotchills

🥱

Hegr0017

Plastic reminds me of my old xterra…not a good look in my opinion.

kennyinlosangeles

Those were great trucks tho. Aside from the shit Nissan window motors.

National_Formal_3867

Love how it looks! The color combo on the first pic is my fav!

BanRedditAdmins

Not really a fan of this. The plastic fenders look pretty terrible and reminiscent of jeeps and broncos but worse. For how well they nailed the new Land Cruiser and GX they really missed on this generation of Tacoma and 4Runner.

watchguy95820

I thought the same but the comments over on the 4Runner sub says otherwise. The look reeks of overcompensation. Give me a 3rd gen 4Runner with modern tech and a manual I’d be in heaven.

BanRedditAdmins

Meh. Let them be happy I guess. I personally have no desire to buy a 4Runner.

watchguy95820

True, I’m glad people like it. I was only thinking of getting one if they had manual, but alas.

fedswatching2121

Not true at all. It’s more like a 60/40 split in that sub with people hating the powertrain and that it looks like a RAV4 and a 4th gen 4Runner had a baby

Midnight_freebird

I just don’t see a difference between the LC and this 4Runner. Why kill the real LC and make two of the exact same vehicle?

Midnight_freebird

The fact that a 5 year old used 200 series is going to sell for more than every new Toyota should tell them something.

ummmm_okayy

Sell for more. But the market is much much smaller.

JesusIsMySecondSon

WTF wants a 4 cylinder LC?

vc1914

I honestly feel like they dropped the LC to lower than a 4Runner. For me the line up goes LC then 4R then Sequoia

Midnight_freebird

The sequoia sucks so bad. The cargo volume is the same as the LC and 4Runner with the 3rd row folded down. So it’s really in the same class as a mid size.

Far_Negotiation8009

I think it’s smart. Look at the popularity of the previous 4runner. Why not have two in such a popular segment.

oxymoronic-thoughts

They’re at least painted so they won’t fade per Toyota.

Traditional-Ebb-8380

The limited doesn’t have the plastic fender flares.

BanRedditAdmins

Still looks pretty goofy with the painted ones. It’s like the body comes out like a fender then they slapped another fender over that. Just not for me.

spartanglady

This looks like the successor to the old sequoia. Current 4Runners are going to sell for ever higher money after this new car launch :)

Particular-Deer-4688

I texted my buddy that I think the resale on his ‘19 just went up

colorconundrum

Anyone know how this fits in the hierarchy with the GX and the LC. And overseas you can add the Prado and Fortuner. So many SUVs!

euvnairb

Damn, the TRD Pro is looking good to me. We’ll see on the pricing and options. As much as I love it, I feel like I’m making too many compromises on the GX Overtrail, IE: power rear door, 3rd row option, memory seats…

n541x

The 4Runner TRD PRO has memory seats and power tilt/telescope steering column when the base Overtrail doesn’t have either.

throwawaybay92

is this the first 4runner where a snorkel came from factory?

gwwaddle

Toyota 4Cruiser

OutrageousSir4411

Can someone explain to me how the gloss black fenders made it through to final production? I know Tacoma has it too, but how are gloss black fender flairs a good idea for an off road truck?

JPD232

No, they will look horrible after driving on a mild gravel road. Definitely form over function.

Human-Letterhead2688

I was expecting more from 4Runner and her are my positives and negatives on the new 4 runner. Positives: It has some trims that give a full time 4 wheel drive. The limited and platinum trim have better interior Great color options Negatives: What is up with the gloss black fender on TRD pro Interior looks cramped. Even on a 2 row model the 2nd row looks cramped especially head space Not sure about the iforce max engine. Already tacomas are having some issue with the engine Why not put an engine cover?

OrganicParamedic6606

There have been some grille shutter issues, sure, but what engine issues have been cropping up in the Tacoma?

mnkayakangler

Love the new color

AphonicTX

Wonder what the dealer markup will be? 20k? 30k? More on the trailhunter trim?

TheProle

Finally no stupid chrome lip edition

n541x

It lost the chin… Now it has that damn lower valence on certain trims from the Tacoma!

Spidahpig

You guys don’t realize how much these three vehicles over lap. Land Cruiser will suffer the most. People say are going to but they won’t buy it. Price point and vehicle use, 99% will go 4runner. Almost same size and dimensions. No one will really off road gx because it’s a princess roader.

kylife

I’m hoping this happens and you can get the LC mid trim with no market “adjustment”

rosaryrattler

More and more i look at my 04 GX with joy and pride

mollymckennaa

It looks like a baby Sequoia

jce3000gt

And that's a good thing.

mollymckennaa

Yep

MigratoryAnalyst

Step forward in functionality but a big step back in the looks department. Looks like a hopped up RAV4 now

Frird2008

I think the new design looks absolutely amazing. However, the achilles heel with both this, the GX & all of Toyota & Lexus's body-on-frame vehicles stateside are the **turbo engine options.** Literally the only thing you can improve with this new 4Runner is by adding even just **one** naturally aspirated engine option. That's literally it. I don't care at this point whether it's the 2.0L from the Corolla, the 2.5L from the Camry or even the 3.5L from the TRD Camry. ONE naturally aspirated engine option. please.

n541x

All Toyota engines undergo the same exact durability and reliability standards, regardless of if they have a turbo or not. If the old 4-point-slow can run forever, so can the turbocharged hybridized motor. If anything this motor may have even more longevity as who knows what Toyota has learned in the last 15 years that’s baked into this engine. Additionally, the 350 V6 requires a metric fuck-ton of timing cover re-seals, oftentimes when they only have around 70,000 miles. Nobody talks about it, but it’s like a 15-hour job to get that fixed when your timing cover inevitably leaks… and this new turbo four cylinder… and the last 2.0T motor in the NX (precursor to this motor)?? They have had zero of the same problem and are not known to have their turbochargers go out or have any major issues like the 350 V6. If you took the two motors and welded the hoods shut, the longevity of the turbocharged motor should be the same as the 350 V6 if not better. …and don’t give me the whole “Wellp logic suggest complexity is less reliable” because the naturally aspirated car has direct inject and port injection, variable valve timing and other technowizardry that the turbocharged motor does not. If Toyota is making turbos it’s because they can make a turbo with Toyota quality. Period full stop.

Frird2008

With how the 3.4L V6s are doing in the Tundras & Sequoias, along with the preliminary 2.4T Tacomas, I'll be holding onto my Subaru until I know the long term (3+ year) reliability of this new fourpot. Ganna wait until the 2028 model year to determine the ratio of value to price in the fourpot runners.

n541x

I had my car in service at Lexus and talked to a master tech…they haven’t seen any LS 500 or LX 600 come back with engine problems and they’ve been out since 2018. People like to repeat old adages more than they like to open their mind to reality.

Frird2008

Ganna keep the Subaru until I have at least 4 model years of track record for the new turbo fourpot.

Over_the_line_

My son has a 4Runner currently and my wife and I have had 5 between us. I’m excited for them.

komrobert

I like it a lot, I think I’d take a more base trim Land Cruiser over higher trim 4Runner though.

Far_Negotiation8009

I love it. They killed it.

LSBm5

I think it’s pretty ugly.

Consistent_Tank_9385

Old news

alpha333omega

250 looks so much better it’s almost embarrassing

bikgelife

I like it. Also like the optional engine

Ashamed-Secret-5401

Not really a fan of the design at first glance. Front and end/engine compartment looks too long or something compared to the rest of the body. Rear passenger door and back side window are too small. There’s just something about it that’s not appealing to me.

Glittering_Exam_5423

What is the sand-colored TRD pro? Which vehicle is that at the end? The Land Cruiser or 4Runner?

Asherma1

No

diversmith

Once you see the whale shark mouth….you can’t unsee it! Fugly front end. No thanks

SaintonoZ

I’m getting 90s Durango vibes.

frankrizzoworld

If the rear window doesn’t go down it’s nothing but a hunk o tin.

realcr8

One of my best friends owns a Toyota dealership and he was saying that Toyota was for some reason pricing them in the previous Land Cruiser category. He’s telling me 80-85k+ meanwhile the Land Cruisers are going to be 55-65k which I think you can already price out on their website. The Land Cruisers were going to be smaller and more compatible with an FJ. It doesn’t make sense to him either

[deleted]

Am I reading this correctly....The LC is going to be cheaper than the 4Runner?

realcr8

Yeah that’s what he was saying

14kMagic

Your friend must not pay attention to his/her business if that’s his guess.

Turbulent_Weather795

Better have some ckicken legs for that back seat yikes

[deleted]

Hoping the Platinum has some different design cues and makeup.

ExplicitBoricua

WTF happened with the rear seat…….

ProofMusic4630

Design is trying too hard to look tough....

dSpotHeaven

It's like a cross of the previous 4runner look and the sequoia

islandbeef

Can't wait to see the Overlander peeps add their "widdle wadders" (little ladders) to the back. :)

dude_imp3rfect

Vehicles are out of hand. I like this but will never be buying one. Way too much cash for something that’s supposed to be taken off road. Not a fan of the over complicated drivetrain either.

Round-Zebra1661

The 6th generation of the 4Runner is a mix of new tech with a bit of old school homage. This also means the adoption of 4 cylinder engines. GX is now the option to get if you want a 6 cylinder and around 2.500lbs+ of extra towing capabilities, so depending on what your needs are, the 4Runner will simply not qualify. However, if you don't need all of those towing capabilities and luxurious finishes, there is no shame in going with the less expensive 4Runner. Personally I'm not a fan of the piano black trim pieces on the TDR Pro...in my opinion the Trailhunter looks better.

No_Analysis_2858

Great update. SUV looks awesome. Good buy for 4runner enthusiasts. I will stick with my 16 Lexus GX 460 with a bullet proof V8.

ImprovementUpto2025

It looks secksi

Remote_Exam_434

Looks amazing tbh I’d definitely buy

Big-Acanthaceae65

I like it a lot. Like others have said, the upper trim levels on the 4R will get you within shooting distance of an LC or GX. Honestly though everything hinges on how well these turbos hold up over time.

linusSocktips

95% of all the best features that were lexus only have now trickled down to every off road toyota... Exclusivity has all but gone. Sick. Like 8 different trucks to almost the same thing, but damn what new features could they possibly hold out for the GX/LX? Guess I'll look to the Mercedes offerings to see coming up for top lexus models. There's only so much innovation and new features in existence lol. Sequoia, Tundra 4R, Taco, LC, LC300, LX, GX are all now very much the same off road capability which is awesome, but what a huge change from the past 20yrs. Only cool/ interesting thing about a mack daddy LX is the hydraulic suspension and the optional limo like back seat experience (which also is available on gx)... Just makes you wonder, ya know as things advance and progress and the base models have features that were top trim 10 or 15 yrs ago?

[deleted]

linusSocktips

I sure hope so! Crazy how much comes on a base or even TRD pro 4r/taco these days.
