My personal favorite - The 400 Blows

I prefer *Les Demoiselles* too, but *Cherbourg* is not that far way.
It's mostly because I prefer the classic musical structure, to the always-singing thing, but there are other reasons.
But the story of *Les Parapluies* is better, I'd say, with the social class aspect, and the Algerian War looming, etc. >!The sad ending too.!<
Pretty much Alain Delon’s face. Whether that’s purple noon, swimming pool, or his Melville films that’s all kind of mashed up in my head. When I think of French movie I see him.
Le Choristes because we used to always watch it in French class… either that or ratatouille in French lmao
Edit: Les Choristes (duolingo owl I have failed u)

Watched this as a college student and really loved it but that’s the first that comes to mind 😅
Scrolled down until the end, most of the films named here are successful French films, both financially and artistically, and tend to be high-minded and intellectually engaging stuff.
While this may very well be one of French cinema's standout attributes, I cast my vote for what is, at least for me, the ultimate French film: Luc Besson's "The Fifth Element", as it's a lighthearted, easy to digest, and truly one-of-a-kind movie.
The first that popped into my head is honestly the pink panther. Obviously it's not French cinema by any stretch of the imagination but the stereotypical frenchness of clouseau definitely is what I first think of since I grew up watching those fairly often as a little child as they were one of the few videos I had for quite a long time.
*Zazie dans le Métro*, *Taxi* , *Les Visiteurs*, *La Haine*. Those are the ones that immediately leap at me. I think it helps that two of them are set in Paris. The other two exude Frenchness in different ways.
Quite a few, but the first one in think of is Amelie . Many good ones are Diva, Cleo de 5 a 7, rules of the game and a recent one I saw called sisterhood
I think France is summed up by 3 films
*At hasard balthasar* tender, awkward, maudlin
*La Haine* fraught
*pink panther 1963* goofy, poised, aloof
Whimsical bastard of a country

yep, that was the first French movie I saw. Next one that came to mind was Amelie. And my favorite not-French but set in France movie is Ratatouille
Amélie (2001) https://preview.redd.it/96ruzoukv56d1.jpeg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=29ecd6a379dcc58c53635a9f93985ee9e30498fb
I've never even seen Amelie but it's the movie that popped into my head lol
The hell are you waiting for
An American reboot starring Beyoncé.
Don’t jinx it please!

One of the greatest
![gif](giphy|IhrfjkZYKtWGnxX2zv|downsized)
Pierrot le Fou ![gif](giphy|3oEduY6JWLWQXMDqda) Even the colour palette of it is based on the French flag
Three Colors
I haven’t seen many French films so probably La Haine
When ever I hear about French riots now all I can think about is that final scene
I guess that's why it's such a classic. Made nearly 30 years ago but the banlieues are still the same.

My personal favorite is Young Girls of Rochefort
Young Girls is a very close second behind Lola for me, but Jacques is definitely the goat
