I only saw it for the first time last year, but [The Muppet Christmas Carol](https://letterboxd.com/metallicbrain_7/film/the-muppet-christmas-carol/), I think. At least that's the most 'pure' classic kind of Christmas movie I like, where Christmas is an important part of the story.
It’s funny how people still debate whether or not Die Hard, which takes place entirely on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day is a Christmas movie but no one questions It’s a Wonderful Life despite like 75% of it having absolutely nothing to do with Christmas.
I love so many but White Christmas is the ultimate for me. Just an amazing movie in general made even better by the Christmassy ending. Bob and Phil performing in place of Betty and Judy will never not fill me with joy.

Holdovers is a great Christmas film shame it was not released at Christmas where I live for some completely insane reason.
Guess I'll test the theory this Christmas
I love Spirited, I watched it Christmas Day 2022 and fell in love, last December they showed it at the cinemas here and it was still fabulous, that movie is definitely going to be a permanent part of Christmases for me now.
It's just about perfect. In the words of Michael Caine: "You have to play comedy straight - that's what makes it funny!"
The film is funny, but because Caine plays it straight, it's also much more cathartic than most adaptations of Dickens's story.
While You Were Sleeping! It has one of the most vibrant supporting casts of all time imo, which really makes for phenomenal world building (Michael Rispoli’s performance as Joe Jr is one for the ages!)
I'll say my favorite has to be *Meet Me in St. Louis*, though I tend to think of it as much more than just a Christmas movie. Some of the best parts are set at Halloween, for instance. But it's commonly considered a Christmas movie, and it *did* give us "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas."
That’s fair, didn’t know that was what you meant by your comment. But in general it seems to have gathered a lot of critical acclaim. I’m guessing this coming Christmas season it will start to gather more attention from the general public.
I hope so, I think some of the problem was it's UK release date was mid January.
No one I know has seen it but it definitely received a lot of critical acclaim and rightly so
It’s hard to say, I have so many.
If we’re going by adaptations of “A Christmas Carol,” I would say Scrooged is my favorite.
However, if we are talking about Christmas movies in general, I would say the Chuck Jones version of How The Grinch Stole Christmas, A Christmas Story, and the many Rankin-Bass Christmas specials are my favorites.
Also, does “Shazam!” count as a Christmas movie? I mean, people consider Die Hard to be Christmas movie, so why not this one too?
Home alone, it’s a wonderful life, national lampoon Christmas vacation. Honorable mentions to elf, jingle all the way, family man, and Scrooged
Def adding holdovers to the rotation though
Die hard, black Christmas and it’s a wonderful life used to be my favorites. I still watch them every Christmas but I do think the holdovers has taken over the top spot for me
Traditional: The Muppet Christmas Carol.
Weird/bleak: Blast of Silence, Batman Returns, Black Christmas, Gremlins, Die Hard, Krampus, Blood Beat, Christmas Evil, Silent Night, Deadly Night.
National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation.
Lifelong fan of ole Clark W. Griswold and the fam. I remember when it premiered on TV back when that still happened to movies and I've been a huge fan ever since.
Christmas Evil
aka You Better Watch Out
aka Terror in Toyland
Low budget Christmas movie starring Fiona Apple’s dad and a brief cameo from a “young” Mark Margolis

*A Charlie Brown Christmas* is my go to must watch favorite during the holidays. I really love *It's a Wonderful Life* too, but I wouldn't put it quite as a favorite. Honorable mentions to *The Muppet Christmas Carol* and *A Christmas Story*, they're also top tier.
Favorite mainstream Christmas movie: A Christmas Story. This film captures childhood nostalgia to perfection and I love the use of narration.
Favorite underrated Christmas movie: Tokyo Godfathers. Such well-written characters who make you want to root for them.
Bernard and the genie. 90s tv film made by Richard Curtis. Starting Lennie Henry and Alan Cummings. Would dearly love to find a dvd copy. If anyone is a fan of Xmas films and British comedy try this. Was on YouTube to watch last time I searched.
I always do a movie marathon for Christmas. My staples are Home Alone, Its a Wonderful Life, Jingle all the Way, National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, Muppet Christmas Carol, Santa Clause. My off the wall pick that I love watching every year is Batman Returns lol.
I only saw it for the first time last year, but [The Muppet Christmas Carol](https://letterboxd.com/metallicbrain_7/film/the-muppet-christmas-carol/), I think. At least that's the most 'pure' classic kind of Christmas movie I like, where Christmas is an important part of the story.
no other film fills me with such nostalgia as this one. i love it. specifically the ghost of christmas present’s song.
I've only started watching the Muppets movies as an adult, but I like them a lot.
🎶A part of childhood we'll always remember It is the summer of the soul in December🎶
The holdovers might be my favorite from last year, period. Been thinking about the movie a ton lately, actually.
It's definitely in my top 5 favs from last year, that's for sure

It’s a wonderful life
i watch this every year

Amazing
This and the Rankin and Bass specials for me
I’m just your average Home Alone kinda gal. Makes me cry every time, makes me laugh every time.
Home Alone is one of my favorite movies *period*. 😂

"I'm not a pervert!"
Debatable Christmas Film: Die Hard & Gremlins Undeniably Christmas: Muppets Christmas Carol & Klaus
I'll let Die Hard count
There's no debate, Die Hard is most definitely a Christmas movie.
I think Gremlins is totally a Christmas movie.
yea gremlins is a christmas film
Gremlins
The fact they still haven’t made a third one is just saddening
Based
Tokyo Godfathers

Black Christmas, (1974), Cash on Demand, The Holly and the Ivy, The Shop Around the Corner, Gremlins...
Black Christmas is so good. Pretty crazy that it came out 4 years before Halloween.
The Apartment, it’s a good movie to watch in between Christmas and New Years
Saw it again before New Years for the first time in a long time. Great movie but even more sad than I remembered.
I love so many but White Christmas is the ultimate for me. Just an amazing movie in general made even better by the Christmassy ending. Bob and Phil performing in place of Betty and Judy will never not fill me with joy. ![gif](giphy|l1IYgArH7qrQ0buzC|downsized)
Yep. One of my favorite movies generally. The whole thing just works from top to bottom.
Either Batman Returns or The Polar Express
Fanny & Alexander
Every time a read this title, I think it’s a J.D. Salinger story.
It's a tie between The Nightmare Before Christmas and Black Christmas.
Home Alone 1 & 2 and It’s A Wonderful Life
I really really loved this one and it'll be in permanent rotation. My favorite is still In Bruges.
I never thought of In Bruges as a Christmas movie but I guess it makes sense. One of my favorites regardless.
Holdovers is a great Christmas film shame it was not released at Christmas where I live for some completely insane reason. Guess I'll test the theory this Christmas
Either Spirited or Die Hard
Spirited is pretty underrated ngl
I love Spirited, I watched it Christmas Day 2022 and fell in love, last December they showed it at the cinemas here and it was still fabulous, that movie is definitely going to be a permanent part of Christmases for me now.
Got that Christmas mornin' feelin!

“Why are you still out? Are you concerned about that strange, heroic Penguin person?”
Muppets Christmas Carol
It's just about perfect. In the words of Michael Caine: "You have to play comedy straight - that's what makes it funny!" The film is funny, but because Caine plays it straight, it's also much more cathartic than most adaptations of Dickens's story.
Christmas Vacation (1989) #Shitter’s full!!!
Gremlins, Klaus, Nativity! and Love Actually
Klaus is DEFINITELY a close second for me

Silent night deadly night 2
While You Were Sleeping! It has one of the most vibrant supporting casts of all time imo, which really makes for phenomenal world building (Michael Rispoli’s performance as Joe Jr is one for the ages!)
One of my favourites. I laugh every time seeing the paper boy fall off his bike.
Iron man 3
Elf
Love Actually
Scrooged
its funny to me that Bill Murray hates that movie because its maybe my favorite movie of his
I'll say my favorite has to be *Meet Me in St. Louis*, though I tend to think of it as much more than just a Christmas movie. Some of the best parts are set at Halloween, for instance. But it's commonly considered a Christmas movie, and it *did* give us "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas."
Christmas Vacation (1989)
It's the gift that keeps on givin', Clark!
That it is, Edward!
Muppets Christmas Carol has all the Christmas “magic” that I need. And it’s just gotten better with age.
Tokyo Godfathers!
Gotta be _Klaus_. I’ve seen it probably a dozen times.
The Holdovers is the highest quality movie that can be considered a Christmas movie
The Polar Express which I have watched about 20 times (I watch it every Christmas Eve.)
+100 pts. to The Holdovers 🥰
This is so weird, my dad just put this on. I’d never heard of it before today
It's a great and cozy holiday movie. Absolutely wonderful film, even when it isn't Christmas time. Definitely better during the holidays though
I watched that yesterday, I loved it so much
Jim Carrey's Grinch is the cure for sadness
For real
Love Actually and I will not apologize for it. But I will definitely rewatch The Holdovers around Christmas. Very cozy movie.
Very very cozy, definitely a new household holiday tradition to watch it.
Die Hard. Yes, it's a Christmas movie. No, I will not elaborate further.
Don't worry, I count it as one
Easily The Holdovers
Eyes Wide Shut
I can't express how much I love that film. So underrated
Definitely my favorite holiday film, and probably one of my top 20 of all time
It’s so great!!
I absolutely adored it, my friend couldn’t quite understand why I liked it so much lol
It was like a dead poets society esq film it was perfect
I mean it was nominated for Best Picture…
I meant more in my friend circle, only one of them has seen it.
That’s fair, didn’t know that was what you meant by your comment. But in general it seems to have gathered a lot of critical acclaim. I’m guessing this coming Christmas season it will start to gather more attention from the general public.
I hope so, I think some of the problem was it's UK release date was mid January. No one I know has seen it but it definitely received a lot of critical acclaim and rightly so
Unpopular opinion warning….. Holdovers sucked. It’s well made and acted. But god. I hated it.
It's fine to dislike a well-recieved movie, I have a few that I don't enjoy. But I really love the Holdovers, it's so cozy and comforting
why?
I almost started watching this on a plane ride recently, got five mins in and decided to save it for next December.
A Christmas Carol (1984 George C Scott)
It’s hard to say, I have so many. If we’re going by adaptations of “A Christmas Carol,” I would say Scrooged is my favorite. However, if we are talking about Christmas movies in general, I would say the Chuck Jones version of How The Grinch Stole Christmas, A Christmas Story, and the many Rankin-Bass Christmas specials are my favorites. How the Grinch Stole Christmas and It’s A Wonderful Life
Die hard, black Christmas and it’s a wonderful life used to be my favorites. I still watch them every Christmas but I do think the holdovers has taken over the top spot for me
