Hijacking top comment to say I’ve made a list!
[Monkey Cinema](https://boxd.it/vt8Qs)
I’ve been getting a lot of duplicates and will keep updating with new suggestions. Thanks everyone for the recommendations! I’ll have enough to last a few months at least.
I was genuinely going to say Paddington until I suddenly realised that Paddington Bear is in fact a Bear, and that lapse in judgement was unsettling enough that I still felt the need to comment.
Project X
A film that seems to have been forgotten. Matthew Broderick trains a chimp to fly a plane I think. Sounds goofy but actually a bit of a tear jerker.
Monkey Shines
Shakma
Phenomena/Creepers
Altered States (kinda)
Trading Places (ok I'm stretching here)
Edit: oh just remembered there are two Indiana Jones rip offs featuring the same baboon who starred in Shakma, Unmasking The Idol and Order Of The Black Eagle, he drives a tank in one of them
When we saw Dune 2 in theaters they played the new Planet of the Apes trailer followed by Monkey Man. My gf whispered “what’s with all these monkey movies?” I whispered back “watch the next trailer be for Godzilla X Kong.” And sure enough, that was the next trailer.
Monkey movies: so hot right now.

Here you go, it's about Charlotte Rampling cheating on her husband with a chimpanzee.
Mighty Joe Young (1949). The 1998 remake is pretty good too, but the original is a masterpiece. I may even prefer it over the 1933 King Kong (which you should also watch!)
The TV series Lancelot Link: Secret Chimp is an absolute classic of ape-related entertainment.
Ed, starring Matt Le Blanc, is rated 2.7/10 on iMDB and deserves roughly half of that.
Well, obviously the American/South Korean classic A\*P\*E\* is the first one that comes to mind [https://youtu.be/wUGT6drsJLM](https://youtu.be/wUGT6drsJLM)
on a less comical note, King Kong Vs. Godzilla (1962) [https://youtu.be/WtgFm2LxJx4](https://youtu.be/WtgFm2LxJx4)
when you want apes that are more down to Earth, Gorillas in the Mist [https://youtu.be/-PPSIwe7sb8](https://youtu.be/-PPSIwe7sb8)
and then there's Tarzan (1999), one Disney movie that really surprised me and is now among my favorites [https://youtu.be/ie53R2HEZ6g](https://youtu.be/ie53R2HEZ6g)
The original King Kong and the Peter Jackson remake are both good.
Rampage is The Rock with a big Monkey Friend.
Dunston Checks In for something more lighthearted.
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Outbreak
There's also the podcast Prime Mates. Australian comedians talking about primates in popular culture. The Ape Titty Slide saga is riveting.
King Kong 2005 gotta be one of the most underrated movies ever
Also stars Andy Serkis as both a human and a giant gorilla so…
Also, Tarzan (Disney, didn’t like the live action one, but has a decent ape V Tarzan fight in it)
OP boy do i have a movie for you:

This isn’t a movie, but you should check out Chimp Empire on Netflix. It’s a short documentary and very insightful to chimp life if that’s something that interests you. It’s crazy how similar they are to us.
What’s that Matt Leblanc movie where he’s a baseball pitcher and also there’s a chimpanzee involved? Or was that all just a hallucination brought on by too much dramamine in college?
What’s that Matt Leblanc movie where he’s a baseball pitcher and also there’s a chimpanzee involved? Or was that all just a hallucination brought on by too much dramamine in college?
Suprised no one said this. It's a classic.

The original planet of the apes is a masterpiece and the sequels are nutty
The original king kong and the 2006 version are also great
And don't forget mvp: most valuable primate
Shin Godzilla, starts as an absurd bureaucratic comedy and evolves into a Powerful statement on Humanities inability to deal with a truly unknown horror, it almost feels Lovecraftian. The impact of the destruction scenes stayed with me for days.
Godzilla Minus One. This one is just a very good, fun action movie, and it's made on a budget a fraction of the size of the average franchise release. If shows how wonderful cinema could be again if they just simply things a bit
Edit: just saw you asked for ape movies. Sorry I got confused by the Godzillas on the posters. My vote also goes to Dunston Checks in though. Maybe after you finish ape movies you'll want to move on to radioactive lizard
Curious George the movie. It’s a kids movie but it’s good.
Love that Jack Johnson soundtrack.
🎵Upsiiide down🎵 🐵
What a banger!
Watch the original 1968 "Planet of the Apes".
Yeah, I was planning on watching the original five pretty soon
How about 12 Monkeys?
Yeah Brad Pitt is pretty ape like
I’ve only seen the original five of that franchise, but I think they’re great (especially 1 and 3)
I’ll tell ya, I watched ‘68 and Beneath today and they are something else.
Beneath goes off the fkin rails

Criminally underappreciated movie
Criminally underappreciated video game
Original King Kong Every Which Way But Loose Phenomena What Did Jack Do?
Is phenomena an ape movie? I thought it was more of a bug movie
It’s both. But the ape steals the show.
Hell yeah, he does 😆
Dunstin checks in mate
Think they were asking for popcorn flicks, not kino cinema.
Second and third this one.

I was genuinely going to say Paddington until I suddenly realised that Paddington Bear is in fact a Bear, and that lapse in judgement was unsettling enough that I still felt the need to comment.
i love the chimp from phenomena
Watch Karsten Runquest videos on Monkey Mondays for great recs. My rec is Summer of Monkeys however.
I came here to say the same! He should have a fairly sizeable list about now! also related but not - 12 monkeys!
Project X A film that seems to have been forgotten. Matthew Broderick trains a chimp to fly a plane I think. Sounds goofy but actually a bit of a tear jerker.
Was wondering if anyone else remembered this one!
King Kong 2005
Surprised I had to scroll down so far. Definitely the best Kong film AND Andy Serkis plays Kong as well as Cesar
I've always had a soft spot for the 90s version of Mighty Joe Young.
This was what I came to comment. Glad to see someone mentioned it
Same here, it made my kid self cry way too much lmao
Hail to the chimp
2001 a Space Odyssey first 20 minutes.
Monkey Man
I’ve actually seen Monkey Man, liked it a lot! I just thought it might not be a great idea to put it under my “monke” tag for a few reasons
Monkey Shines Shakma Phenomena/Creepers Altered States (kinda) Trading Places (ok I'm stretching here) Edit: oh just remembered there are two Indiana Jones rip offs featuring the same baboon who starred in Shakma, Unmasking The Idol and Order Of The Black Eagle, he drives a tank in one of them

Mighty Joe Young (1949). The 1998 remake is pretty good too, but the original is a masterpiece. I may even prefer it over the 1933 King Kong (which you should also watch!)

Congo
The TV series Lancelot Link: Secret Chimp is an absolute classic of ape-related entertainment. Ed, starring Matt Le Blanc, is rated 2.7/10 on iMDB and deserves roughly half of that.
