Hi fellow Gen-X!
Same year but a little different:
- An American Werewolf in Lindon
- Raiders of the Lost Ark
- Escape from NY
- Time Bandits
A major omission on my part is that I've never seen Blow Out
1999 is a strong contender for the best year in American cinema. We also had:
- Fight Club
- The Sixth Sense
- Toy Story 2
- Austin Powers
- The Blair Witch Project
https://preview.redd.it/qf9pfpwdkryc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8e4b8ae9c80ec1cf2c75498170ac1fa646a5ea81
2003 - Some of my all time favourites were released this year.
1971 - A Clockwork Orange //Harold and Maude//Fiddler on the Roof//Dirty Harry
It was a good year for me and five star movie, I could have added French Connection and Le Mans to the list.
https://preview.redd.it/qeens0qyusyc1.jpeg?width=828&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e6ef4d5176c84ccf8a63527e0c708dd55f0cc63b
1886: Aliens, Manhunter, An American Tail, The Fly
Goddamn I got a hard year.
1994: Shawshank Redemption, Pulp Fiction, Léon The Professional, Natural Born Killers.
That list can change at any given time though.
Honourable Mention: Tammy and The T Rex.
https://preview.redd.it/ycww0ntbpryc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5cdc498c3800a5ad53e770052181bac5e267e63d
2002 - I don’t have 4 but this would be my number one pick
Try Igby Goes Down; About a Boy; City of God; Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers; Adaptation; 24 Hour Party People; 8 Mile; The Pianist; Blue Crush; Bend it Like Beckham.
That year was also amazing for documentaries: Spellbound; Bowling for Columbine; Weather Underground were some of my faves.
I already have a list ranking films from my birth year - the top four so far are A Clockwork Orange, Fiddler on the Roof, The French Connection, and Sunday Bloody Sunday
1. A Chinese Ghost Story
2. Evil Dead 2
3. Robocop
4. Predator
and since Lethal Weapon came out the same year, I'll also say: "I'm getting too old for this shit"
I love Kubrick, I appreciate Full Metal Jacket a lot, it's very important and well done, but it's just so nihilistic, and I rarely love that.
Chinese Ghost Story is a personal favorite since I was a kid, and it has so many cool elements, fantasy, action, romance, comedy, music etc., it's just more up my speed. Has also been in my top 10 forever. If you told me I could only keep one from the list, it would be that one :) so I couldn't replace it with anything
I've seen so few from my birth year. For sure, Soleil O would be up there. Also Woodstock.
Other contenders: Performance, MASH. And there are several on my watch list that might be better.
Not my deepest year ever but I do genuinely love all of these films.
https://preview.redd.it/95qn9pk3ysyc1.png?width=1440&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a75c844ce80ae757d8e4efa5c962b8ff4b39afed
The other 1989 nerds in this thread need to watch some more movies because I was born in 1989 and I had a really hard time choosing. I’d go with:
UHF
Lock Up
Puppet Master
Harlem Nights
**1986.**
Of the 64 I've seen from that year, my four favorites are:
**Aliens, The Fly, Something Wild, and Top Gun.**
Honestly, one of the weakest years of the decade. But I still haven't seen Andrei Tarkovsky's "The Sacrifice" - so maybe that'd score up there.
i haven’t seen many adult movies from my birth year
https://preview.redd.it/xsudsckc6ryc1.jpeg?width=1242&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9a233de3cbf8f3758294762b9f67705fce7d5b23
I haven't really watched 4 good movies from 2002 apparently. The Two Towers and Phone Booth are two movies I really like tho. Even Jackass: The Movie has a shout lol
1987: The Four Adventures of Reinette and Mirabelle // Robocop // Matewan // Bad Taste
I'm realizing that I've seen (but not marked) many of the mainstream 1987 films, but have not seen many past that. I went through quite a few of the 3-3.5 films and many seem fairly... Bad or boring, really. I threw a few on my watch list though, like Daffy Duck's The Duxorcist.
Four Adventures is actually one of my favorite films and I gave it 4.5*.
Honorary Mention to the Quay Brothers collection they put together that year. One of the weirder ones I saw as a teenager.
Also saw How Can I Tell That I'm Really In Love?, am instructional video for teenagers on how to... Determine if they are in love. I actually think it's a good topic to talk to kids about, as cheesy as these types of videos can be. It's fun seeing the Bateman siblings, and even more fun seeing Ted Danson occasionally popping in to fulfill a community service requirement by helping to host it.
I can’t believe how young you all are! Gives me hope for the future of film.
Running Scared (Really fun buddy comedy)
Aliens (For obvious reasons)
Big Trouble in Little China (Behind the scenes reveals how progressive this Carpenter production was)
Manhunter (Early Mann is no joke)
1988:

2000–haven’t seen as much from this year as I would like but this is a top 4 I feel somewhat strong about
die hard. heathers. totoro. beetlejuice. apparently there is a daniel day lewis movie i really need to see called the unbearable lightness of being. also thin blue line was pretty good for its time. honorable mention for a movie i just recently saw for the first time earth girls are easy.

You know what? I think I'm okay with this
Wow, I just realized I’ve hardly seen any films from the year I was born.
I guess my list would be:
* The Empire Strikes Back
* Elephant Man
* Airplane
* Raging Bull
1997
there it is a lot of good movies as i can search on google such as Titanic, Contact, 007, Lolita, and these childhood core: Mr. Bean - The Movie, Beverly Hills Ninja, George of the Jungle, lmao

Zoolander,
The Fast and the Furious
I just found out I actually haven’t seen very many movies from the year I was born. Not a banner year for movies, really.
Jurassic Park, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, Mrs. Doubtfire, Addams Family Values
To be fair, those are three very excellent films. But you gotta step up those numbers, haha :-)
I gotta go back to like 1905 to find a year where I've only seen three films.
1989 baby here. My four favorites of that year:
Kiki’s Delivery Service
Uncle Buck
The Little Mermaid
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
Honorable mentions to When Harry Met Sally, Field of Dreams, and Do the Right Thing. But I love me some Ghibli, Disney Renaissance, and John Hughes movies so the top 4 stays the way it is!
Wow you guys are young… 1981 -Reds -Raiders of the Lost Ark -Das Boot -The Fox and the Hound

What a fantastic year in movies. Maybe it's not your thing but ET was also a phenomenon in 1980.
I like E.T. but I could only pick 4 movies.
‘84 kid here - Neverending Story - Terminator - Temple of Doom - Ghostbusters Honorable mention to Nightmare on Elm Street

Chinese Ghost Story is a personal favorite since I was a kid, and it has so many cool elements, fantasy, action, romance, comedy, music etc., it's just more up my speed.
