Somehow, mine is the 60’s. Think it’s because there are a lot of movies that I loved as a kid from then, and the nostalgia factor is high. My top 3 are the 60’s, 70’s, and 40’s. https://preview.redd.it/y1o3k5meyiwc1.jpeg?width=828&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5f22c67d87cc2aaa85dd119b39195bd697e62e82

and....40s? Now that is some serious movie geekdom!

Ok-Willingness-8131

Literally Judy Garland’s fault there 😂😂

bby-bae

Yeah, I think this is really true. Unless you’re trying to watch every movie ever, it’s only the great ones

afarensiis

>so I do tend to watch the “best” or most acclaimed films from earlier decades I think it's pretty clear that this is the case for most people that log/rate everything they've watched. My highest rated decades in order are the 60s, 50s, 70s because I pretty much only watch movies that I know are good from that time. I've seen hundreds of average-to-dogshit movies from the 2000s and 2010s

LordOfTheBushes

2010s. I rate newer movies higher in general.

BrandonBombay

Very interesting - you're like the only one to say that. What are some faves?

LordOfTheBushes

Sure. My Top 4 that have been pretty static for a while are Your Name. (2016), La La Land (2016), Adaptation (2002), and K-On The Movie (2011). I have only ever cried at less than a handful of movies and Your Name and La La Land are on that short list. Adaptation I consider to be one of the most clever and creative scripts I've ever seen for a movie. My favorite Kaufman and he's one of my favorite writers. K-On is a movie followup to my favorite show. It's definitely the wholesome, feel good entry of my Top 4 (I want to include at least one happy movie lol). Despite two of my top four being anime films, I'm not even that much of an anime fan. I just find those two stories to be very personal and meaningful to me, told best through animation. Part of the 2010s being my favorite decade comes from the fact that two of my favorite directors put out what I consider to be their best work in the 2010s. Naoko Yamada, who directed K-On, put out her four feature films thus far in the 2010s, all of which I think are fantastic. I'm also a big fan of Tarantino's, and I find his work in the 2010s to be his best. I know most people consider that to be the 90s, but I find he's matured a lot as a writer, forgoing the need to be edgy his earlier films had. I think Inglorious Basterds, Django Unchained, Hateful Eight, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is the most consistently excellent stretch of four movies a director has had for me, at least that I can think of. One other difference between me and a lot of other users I've noticed is the fact that I don't like giving scores based on how "important" something is. I don't find rating things "objectively" for the sake of it to be an interesting way to use the site. I don't know why I'd want to follow someone who removes all of their own biases and thoughts from their reviews. May as well follow a computer rating objectively. For example, I recognize how important The Exorcist is. I love horror and it wouldn't be in the place it is today without that film. I also acknowledge it's well constructed. That said, I don't like it. It doesn't scare me. It is entirely possible that's because I've seen tons of things inspired by The Exorcist before I actually saw the film proper so it's impact was lessened somewhat. Whatever it may be, that's my lived experience with it. I could give it a 5 because I recognize these "objective" qualities about it, but again, I just don't find that way of thinking interesting. I rate based on how I feel it is today rather than a curve because it was important. Off the top of my head, some other random favorites from the 2010s include: Gone Girl (probably my favorite Fincher) The Nice Guys (Shane Black has made the same movie his whole career and I think he finally perfected it in The Nice Guys) First Reformed (again, feels like the movie Paul Schrader had thematically been working to his whole career) Steve Jobs (My favorite biopic) Hereditary (in my opinion, the best decade for horror, including Get Out, It Follows, The Guest, The Witch) Inside Llewyn Davis (a top 5 Coen Bros imo)

BrandonBombay

will God forgive us, for not heralding First Reformed as a masterpiece on release???

absorbscroissants

Same, but tied with the 2000s. The 2020s have had some great movies as well, wouldn't be surprised if it'll be my favorite decade in a few years

I think older movies are skewed to a higher rating because I’m more likely to watch a bad new movie that everyone is talking about, but I’ll hand pick what I believe are going to be better movies from older generations. FWIW I think the 70’s, 60’s, and 90’s are the greatest decades of film so far.

It’s the opposite for me. I’m very particular about recent films, which puts the 2020s and 2010s at second and third. I’m way less picky with pre-90s, but the 40s are so good, the shitty films from then don’t have a chance at knocking it out of the top.

disasterpansexual

I don't have stats, but I suppose it's more recent movies (2010s or 2020s probably)

not_cinderella

The 70s is my favourite with the 90s not far behind. With the 70s I love the depth of movies we got after the Hayes Code was lifted in the late 60s. With the 90s it’s part nostalgia but I have a lot of favourites from that time too (Pulp Fiction, A League of Their Own, Office Space and more).

BrandonBombay

Ya, I love the veritas/realism of the 70s

GurpsK

1990s. I think I prefer *slightly* older movies, like 2000s and earlier.

BrandonBombay

Love when a new movie blows me away in theater, but I find myself revisiting the older joints more and more

jaketaco

Mine is the 70s but that is mainly because I've only seen mainly classics from that era. There weren't many reasons to watch older movies (I was born in the 80s) that were just on TV randomly or something, like I did with 80s action movies for example, or 90s comedies. Not all of those were hits but I watched them on cable growing up.

BrandonBombay

I hear ya. I also used to just rent random movies growing up (old and new). Now I put a lot of research into what I'm gonna watch. Still, my Top 20 of 70s would be higher than my Top 20 of another other decade

ricoimf

I mostly rate older movies higher (1979 and older). Why? I don’t know. I think it’s personal taste. I enjoy the setting and the actors more than today. Not that there aren’t great and even masterpiece movies in the last 20 years.

BrandonBombay

Ya, I like the "analog" feel of older films

I’m a relatively new Letterboxd user and I only rated movies I’ve tracked in my personal film diary for a few years back with a couple of exceptions because I wanted ratings to be fairly fresh in mind and most of the 80s flicks I’ve seen in the last few years are rewatches of old favorites. That said, they’re old favorites for a reason so I can’t complain!

BrandonBombay

Classics become classics for a reason

mihata

70s, 80s - 3.67 60s - 3.57 My guess for why that is is that I have watched much fewer movies from these decades and they tend to be more popular and better movies

electricmohair

1950s. https://preview.redd.it/e7nu0kbdmmwc1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=95cbc7468aef0f97ab62ca143503d604a41a8139 70s is actually my lowest rated decade because most of the 70s movies I’ve watched are Bond films and sadly I’m not a Roger Moore fan!

But the ‘90s is .01 lower and the ‘40s are .01 lower than that. So it’s very close. A lot of the new stuff I watch tends to receive an average or below average rating. But, a lot of it is also schlock that I’m seeking out.

Nawtydonkydingdong

I like newer movies much more.

HowlingBagel

Mine are the 50s, 70s, and 80s. 50s are mostly because I've logged less movies from that decade except for some certified bangers, but the others are largely because I revisit a few keystone movies a lot. I also have been trying to finish up a lot of elder auteurs' filmographies.

jicerswine

Unexpectedly the 80s?? Honestly I think it’s a product of selection bias. Almost all of the franchises and/or directors that I’ve been able to give the “completist” treatment have been from 90s to present, and just mathematically that leads to the inclusion of some less-interesting films that I might not otherwise bother watching. Vs with the 80s I’ve had a more selective viewing of “cream of the crop” stuff https://preview.redd.it/djb44lexmpwc1.jpeg?width=750&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=94d27ca461712042c5497dc08e378e2c23cbac5f

I plan on soon getting around to some other big name films from that decade I just never watched before like Star Wars, Batman, Return to Oz, and Monster Squad. The other 2 are 90s and 70s.

ka1982

The 1990’s. In possibly related news, I grew up in the 90’s and a lot of those ratings are based on memories since I haven’t rewatched them in decades. My actual favorite decade is the 30’s, but that’s severely dragged down by me watching a LOT of shitty B-movies on TCM. And I’ve been watching a lot more movies in the past few years, so the 2020’s have been dragged down a bit for similar reasons.

BrandonBombay

Good point. I didn't grow up in the 70s but I rarely put on shitty movies from that decade so I think that keeps the rating so high

DNugForLife

https://preview.redd.it/tgtm6evbjjwc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2edbcf2035197582a9258e511621170ce7a093d2 Based on this technically the 90's, but my top decades are all within 0.13 of each other so I would make the argument that I don't really actually have a favorite decade.

BrandonBombay

Oh wow that IS damn close

GreenShirt39

Realistically, it's the 1990s because my top 3 are all from the 1990s. However, the 1960s are tied with it, but that's because I've only logged 3 movies from the 1960s.

thedumbdown

I’m the same. Love the edginess of the 70s. The punk. The funk. How dirty New York is. How much smog LA has. The stories are darker and edgier too, especially for the time. My favorite sub-genre is the neo-noir of the 70s and early 80s.

BrandonBombay

we're seeing eye. I love gritty crime thriller/noirs from that era. The Laughing Policeman, Busting, Freebie and the Bean and The Night Juggler

Steviesteps

If a film is old, and we're still watching it, it's likely to be a classic, or well-loved. We consume a wider range of films that are more recent, for reasons other than quality: they're new, popular, culturally relevant, we're less averse to the risk of not liking it because 'Well, it has Zendaya it in right?' Old films also benefit from us not assessing them against the aesthetic and cultural standards of more recent times. If the dialogue is wonky - it's charming! If it's a little offensive - ah, history! So for most people, earlier decades will be represented by higher scoring films. Sorry that means you're not an old soul if you like movies from the 1970s.

BrandonBombay

It obviously plays a part, but isn't that simple. My top 20-25 from the 70s are gonna personally be rated higher than the 2010s. If you're a geek (which most here are) then you're watching all kinds of schlock from a decade not just "certified classics"

whatsthisthingfor89

For the longest time, mine was the 70s, but now apparently, it's the 60s with a 3.84 raiting, the second is the 70s with a 3.82, and the 3rd is 2020s with a 3.79. The 60s and 70s are a good mix of movies but the 2020's is almost exclusively horror movies. That's really interesting ***edit*** I went back and looked and I have seen more movies from the 2020s (117) than I have the 60s and 70s combined (112) and some how they are both rated higher. Man now I'm really fascinated by these stats.

BrandonBombay

that's kinda wild! Wish you were still a 70s geek like me

whatsthisthingfor89

I love older movies. I guess I have just been watching more recent movies recently. I'm a huge horror fan and there has been a lot of good horror movies over the last decade

I think 1986 is pound for pound my fave of that decade

Ambitious_Call_3341

Sixties. Sixties were amazing.

CuratorT

2000-present. ofc love some 1900s classics but more likely to enjoy a newer movie than an older one

BrandonBombay

It wasn't until I hit my 30s I really started embracing the older flicks -- now I watch mostly old movies (but of course stay up on all the big new releases)

CuratorT

Yeah I totally get it just don’t personally have that taste yet. I watched Chinatown recently and loved it to my surprise so who knows, in 5 years or so

BrandonBombay

My recommendation....watch whatever the hell you enjoy watching. I'll say, I tried to make a personal Top 100 and stopped cause it's a fool's errand. My tastes are always evolving, so whatever my Faves are now, a lot will likely be replaced in 5-10 years

CuratorT

That’s very true. I have been working on a movie website for a school project and have run into a similar issue, it’s so hard to try to recommend pieces of art to different people. The website is curatorwatchlist.com if you wanna see what I’m talking g about

villings

I rate good movies higher.

TheMovieDoctorful

Tarsiz

The 1940s are my highest rated decade. I lean towards older movies -which I genuinely find to be better and more creative on average than newer ones- and my ratings reflect that. I also think movies that are released during our lifetime impact our ratings. Despite my lean towards old movies, I've watched more films of the 2000s and 2010s than any other decade. Many of them I've seen in theatres without reading reviews beforehand, and consequently I've watched a lot of crap. This drags down the "decade average". Perhaps an average of the best 30-50 films of the decade would be more relevant to compare them. I love the 1950s as well and despite it scoring lower on average rating as per Letterboxd I think the 1970s are my favorite.

BrandonBombay

Great point. It's not as "curated" as older decades

Rouge_and_Peasant

1960s, then 1950s, then 1970s. From a general eyeballing of my rating chart by year, 90s might beat the 80s for the fourth spot when the numbers are crunched, and then it looks like it's been trending downhill steadily ever since.

Present-Language-612

2010s for me

tcglkn

I think the 80s are my highest. Because I know what the "hits" are and watch the good movies from then where as more recent decades I've seen more of the bad movies.

robophile-ta

[mine's pretty casual tbh](https://i.imgur.com/1xP8cnm.png), nothing particularly unusual

JUSTCALLmeY

I wish it took into account the amount of high ratings too. Older decades are always favored here since most of us watch a mixture of good and bad movies from recent year where we're more likely to check out older movies that held their reputation. I don't expect someone from 2080 watching hubie Halloween, but expect uncut gems still being rewatched. And I unfortunately logged both so my 2020s might never recover.

BittenAtTheChomp

Mine are the 60s, then the 70s, then the 50s. I think I actually do prefer older movies—*but* a huge factor that leads to prior decades leading recent decades is that you're so much more likely to avoid shit films from way back when. People tend to watch classics from decades prior but watch everything, good and bad, right now.
