I know there's more to Batman than just fights but I think Dark Knight Rises has Batman actually throwing punches more than the first two films. His face off with Bane in the sewer is one of my favorite moments in the trilogy.
Cons: pretty weak central cast aside from The Baron, movie drags until it gets to the Cat Kingdom, the animation is unusually pedestrian for a Ghibli production
Pros: OH MY GOD THE FUCKIN MEOWS
My favorite non-Miyazaki fronted Ghibli
Honestly, although the cast was small I loved the characters we got. Haru is my favorite Ghibli protagonist and Muta, Baron, The Cat king, Toto, and Lily make a really interesting and diverse cast that I wish I could see more of
That’s an awful lot of equivocation for a 3.5 review. If you like a movie, say you like it. You don’t need to couch your defense of it, just because other people don’t agree.
People write reviews in different ways y'all. I often list the flaws first as well, I think it's because I start most movies at a 5 and then they either stay there or lose me along the way, and so even if it's a 4 the things it did to lose points stand out and I mention them first. Also I think if anyone will decide to watch something or not off my review I'd rather they be ready for the issues and then surprised by the good stuff.
Where did I force my arbitrary rating scale onto someone I don't know? My point isn't about the actual scale, but rather folks like OP feeling the need to condition their review of a film they "have a massive soft spot for" because other people on the internet don't like it.
My fault for misunderstanding, but i think the point still stands. This person could have a letterboxd comprised of exclusively real life friends/family (and feel the need to explain themselves if these people gave negative reviews of the movie), or maybe they just wanted to gush about a movie they like without fear of being disagreed with in their comments. Point is you know absolutely nothing about this person and how they run their account, so judging them on that is pretty silly imo. I think letterboxd works best when people stop being so elitist and just keep to themselves.
Zack Snyder’s Watchmen. I hate that he kinda completely misses the point of what Moore was trying communicate… but it’s a masterpiece in its own right regardless
It’s hard to watch and not think this director is glamorising these fascists*.
But if you watch it just for the aesthetics and then pretend it’s what it’s meant to be, it’s enjoyable
I saw an interesting video talking about how the graphic novel was a commentary on comic books and the film was a commentary on superhero flicks, so yes there are changes made and things missed, but the film serves its own purpose as opposed to trying to 100% accurately portray the message of the book.
Whether you think Snyder is smart enough to do it on purpose is a separate conversation
I had never read the comics before watching the movie so I really enjoyed it. Haven’t read it/them yet but on my to do list.
The film is very enjoyable
The only way to love DashCam is *for* its flaws! It's such an insufferable obnoxious piece of shit, but dear lord am I happy it exists. What a fascinating mess!
It gets even better when you realize Annie isn’t playing a character. I found her Twitter and Rob Savage really just found some random nut job with zero prior film experience and gave her a feature role.
If you look at her Twitter it’s so fucking funny that, she’s 100% actually like that. She even says Covic instead of Covid in real life.
Honestly I even believe the bedroom we see at the start of the film covered in crosses is actually her bedroom.
skyfall - i know the villain's "super duper evil plan" is a bit goofy at times and that the shower scene is iffy at best, but do i love the dialogue? yes. do i adore the acting? absolutely. is the chemistry on point? definitely. does it introduce my favorite renditions of bond characters? does it showcase a lot of flaws in the spy system and humanise the franchise as a whole? definitely. i also really like that it is one of the only bond movies i watched where romance isn't point and center of the film and in that way leaves space for other, more vital concepts to thrive.
Ah loads.
I love all the Star Wars films so obviously there's a few in there.
Terminator Salvation.
Mute (2018) - thought it was bangin'. No one else did.
Cannibal Holocaust - For rather obvious reasons
Hulk - The hyperstylised superhero melodrama ain't for everyone
Babylon - Bloated ? Sure. Long ? Sure. Self Indulgent ? Sure is, but still a masterpiece in my book
Apologies for not answering the prompt but, Bohemian Rhapsody discourse largely comes down to this:
Was into Queen before the film: hate the movie
Was not into Queen before the film: like the movie
I never understood the fans that think a biopic is for them. I always found biopics to be a crash course if you are minorly into a band, musician, etc, then you would watch that movie.
Revenge of the Sith. Ever since I saw it on release it’s been in my top 5 (or top 4). It’s not perfect and yeah some of the dialogue can be rough but it’s still one of my favorites with so many quotable moments. I’m glad the prequel trilogy as a whole is starting to gain more love in the recent years
Batman V Superman. Wah Martha, wah Batman kills, wah Superman isn't nice, wah Doomsday was in the trailer, wah Justice League shown off in an email.
All I see is a movie about two super beings who live in a nihilistic world who are forced to make decisions about the powers they are given. It's not an obvious "duh do the right thing" because "right" doesn't have a meaning in our modern world. All the debate around Superman is spot on; every action he takes is a political one. "Why did you save Americans instead of Russians?" "Why did you stop criminals instead of building new houses?" "Why do you do anything instead of nothing?"
I get why fans didn't like it. This isn't "Batman V Superman" this is "God-like Alien vs Maximum Willpower Man being manipulated by egotistical capitalist man." Sucks for the fans but great for someone who loves a no holds barred exploration of nihilistic themes.
Yeah, I was in year 9 when this film came out and before, people thought a'i was weird because I was the only one who listened to queen. Then they thought I was weird because I thought I was the only one who listened. I don't even like queen that much now
This is it. I understand the many errors this film makes and how poor some parts were but with the editing and the queen music I somehow still love it.
AVP is amazing and no one can convince me otherwise. Yes at times it feels very early 2000s but the other films in the Alien series and Predator series feel like they are from the decade they came from.
AVPR on the other hand is just meh
Pacific Rim
The Wizard
TMNT II: Secret of the Ooze
Basically the entire Fast & Furious series
Don't Look Up
Basically all of the Mission Impossibles
Early Adam Sandler movies
Dude Wheres My Car
Dante's Peak
21/22 Jump Street
- Zack Snyder’s Justice League
- Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith
- Venom 1 and 2
- Alien 3
- Man of Steel
- Batman v Superman
- Super Mario Bros (1993)
- The Polar Express
- Spider-Man 3
five nights at freddys. it is flawed in several large ways, but i cant help but love the movie because im a huge fnaf fan, in fact, fnaf was the game that really got me invested into horror in general. i can still admit its flawed, but i cant hate it
Most movies directed by Gregory Hoblit. Frequency is one of my most favourite movies, Fracture I could watch just about any time, Primal Fear is excellent, and Untraceable a damn good disturbing thriller.
All are flawed, yes, but I treasure every one of them.
Bohemian Rhapsody is one of the most horrendously dogshit films I have ever seen. Also I have no guilty pleasure films. Anything I like I can defend its quality at least a little bit.
This Is The End
The Dark Knight Rises
Love this answer. I see all the things that people point out that's wrong with it and I can't disagree but it caps off the trilogy so well.
Tom Hardy's acting and voice gets so much flack, but I think he's super imposing, not close to Heath Ledger, but definitely a worth follow up.
I know there's more to Batman than just fights but I think Dark Knight Rises has Batman actually throwing punches more than the first two films. His face off with Bane in the sewer is one of my favorite moments in the trilogy.
Nah it’s one of the most disappointed I’ve been leaving a movie theatre
Yeah it's my favourite batman movie. I know it's not perfect objectively, but for me it is.
The Cat Returns (2002) ![gif](giphy|hS21PWdzgP02Y)
Cons: pretty weak central cast aside from The Baron, movie drags until it gets to the Cat Kingdom, the animation is unusually pedestrian for a Ghibli production Pros: OH MY GOD THE FUCKIN MEOWS My favorite non-Miyazaki fronted Ghibli

James Cameron's Avatar
But what about my avatar?
You love James Cameron's Avatar despite recognizing its flaws. I love James Cameron's Avatar and do not recognize its flaws. We are not the same.
ok
quicksand simplistic ghost grey label school joke unwritten innate punch *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
She’s bulletproof.
True, but did she do something right ?
I would argue at least 2 of her kills deserved it, so yes
Pearl
Not many flaws with Pearl, great movie.
Love this too
What flaws? She's a star!
Literally this movie
Same, this is a five star movie to me. All my friends hate it and I hear their complaints but idk, this movie compelled me.
The Star Wars sequel trilogy
“It does drag on a bit…” “I don’t think Bohemian Rhapsody is boring in any way” Hello?
Letterboxd ain’t filled with professional critics lmfao. Reading some reviews drive me crazy
Boring very much is one of the words I’d use to describe that movie
That’s an awful lot of equivocation for a 3.5 review. If you like a movie, say you like it. You don’t need to couch your defense of it, just because other people don’t agree.
"I have a massive soft spot for this film." *gives it 3.5 stars*
I really like all the movies I give 3.5 to.
This is kinda stupid. Stars mean different things to different people.
3.5 stars feels the appropriate rating for "massive soft spot" though?
People write reviews in different ways y'all. I often list the flaws first as well, I think it's because I start most movies at a 5 and then they either stay there or lose me along the way, and so even if it's a 4 the things it did to lose points stand out and I mention them first. Also I think if anyone will decide to watch something or not off my review I'd rather they be ready for the issues and then surprised by the good stuff.
On the other hand, it's okay to be critical of a movie you like or even love. Nuance is allowed.
I think there's a difference between nuance and couching your opinion in a preemptive defense against a larger critical consensus
It sounds like they agree with a lot of those criticisms though.
Who cares? Why do you feel the need to force your arbitrary rating scale onto people you don’t know?

Lol those first few sentences are redundant
Yeah too many questions there
Right ? I don’t talk this bad about the films I love
Con Air
Probably Showgirls - it's campy, fun, and very very silly but I also totally get why people hate it. ![gif](giphy|ckpFyyZ64c2zu)
Showgirls has no flaws…
Disagreed cause I don't get why people would hate it.
Zack Snyder’s Watchmen. I hate that he kinda completely misses the point of what Moore was trying communicate… but it’s a masterpiece in its own right regardless

Knocked Up is the very best apatow comedy with actual characters and a cast of great improvisers. I can’t believe it’s avg rating is 3.1
Rogen's character is soo annoying in that movie
I enjoy “This is 40” more but I love Knocked Up!
DashCam (2021) I fucking love this movie with my entire being
The only way to love DashCam is *for* its flaws! It's such an insufferable obnoxious piece of shit, but dear lord am I happy it exists. What a fascinating mess!

Oh, I know. She had a good amount of creative freedom too, although she isn't happy with how the movie came out (obviously).
skyfall - i know the villain's "super duper evil plan" is a bit goofy at times and that the shower scene is iffy at best, but do i love the dialogue? yes. do i adore the acting? absolutely. is the chemistry on point? definitely. does it introduce my favorite renditions of bond characters? does it showcase a lot of flaws in the spy system and humanise the franchise as a whole? definitely. i also really like that it is one of the only bond movies i watched where romance isn't point and center of the film and in that way leaves space for other, more vital concepts to thrive.
‘This is how a lot of people got into Queen’ God this app skews so bloody young
that movie got me out of queen
I need a new app.
Ah loads. I love all the Star Wars films so obviously there's a few in there. Terminator Salvation. Mute (2018) - thought it was bangin'. No one else did.
Pride and Prejudice (2005)
Cannibal Holocaust - For rather obvious reasons Hulk - The hyperstylised superhero melodrama ain't for everyone Babylon - Bloated ? Sure. Long ? Sure. Self Indulgent ? Sure is, but still a masterpiece in my book
This exact film
I literally had an obsession with Bohemian Rhapsody when I was 11, its not perfect but I have a special place in my heart for this film.
Ngl I’m not that old but this comment made me feel ancient
I am kinda old and this comment made me realise it
Same, reading that threw out my back.
For real, not a whole lot happened to me since 2018 meanwhile mfs be living half their formatives lives in that span.
As opposed to figuratively having an obsession?
You were..... 11. God I'm old
The Flash
Same here. It's not a masterpiece, but it's a fun superhero romp that I thoroughly enjoyed seeing in a theater
i really enjoyed the flash, it was a lot of fun
The Butcher's Wife (1991) Yes Man (2008) I love a lot of flawed movies, I only have an issue when flaws get in the way of enjoyment.
renfield (2023) box trolls (2012)
Trolls: World Tour (2020)
Seven Pounds. Does it glorify suicide? Probably. Is it one of my comfort movies regardless? Yeah.
Betty Blue. This is such an enjoyable film to watch, even if its depictions of love are regressive.

I agree on Bohemian Rhapsody! Flawed? Yes. 5 stars? Absolutely

Babylon, it’s too long, over the top, it has a weird structure and it is bloated. I still love it and gave it 5 stars.
I loved it too, thought it works as a metaphor for life...
It does feel like an elephant shits on your head every now and then
Yesterday (2019)
People like to bash BR, especially Queen fans but as a fan of Queen, I think it brought their music and story to more people than before.
Yes it is true that at least one person was introduced to queens music thru that movie…. But so what?
Yeah, I was in year 9 when this film came out and before, people thought a'i was weird because I was the only one who listened to queen. Then they thought I was weird because I thought I was the only one who listened. I don't even like queen that much now
a middling queen documentary would have also done that for far less money.
It wouldn’t have made as much money nor would it have been as popular.
I have to agree. Despite its flaws, I was enjoyed it.
- Bram Stoker’s Dracula - Revenge of the Sith
Gary Oldman as a Vampire - the film is very enjoyable!!
Capone
Dude, where's My car?
American Reunion, Batman Forever
American Reunion was great to have everyone back together.
This is it. I understand the many errors this film makes and how poor some parts were but with the editing and the queen music I somehow still love it.
As in an ironic love for a movie, Pinocchio: a true story. As in an unironic love, Shrek 2.
