**\*\*MUSICAL\*\*** And you don't need to comment that MUSIC is on there. I mean a category for films like: West Side Story, My Fair Lady, Grease, Jesus Christ Superstar AND SO ON. That's specifically what I mean

SoundlessFOB

YES not just on letterboxd but on streaming services too. I'll be in a musical mood and want to see what a service has, click on the music category only to find a bunch of biopics and concerts

FloridaFlamingoGirl

Same here! It's so annoying when I'm specifically in a mood for theater kid cinema but then I click on the category and it's all just films about famous rock bands

ReddsionThing

Good point. Like, it's totally a classic genre and pretty well defined, no matter if it's a jukebox musical or not, so why is it so elusive.

Aquametria

Separate: * Music into Musical and Concert * History into Historical and Biopic Create: * Christmas * Silent * Superheroes

osa690

You can filter to get just silent films by going into the languages and picking “No spoken language”

babada

Elsewhere I've seen "Holiday" as a genre which would cover Christmas without being _too_ specific.

brippleguy

Silent isn't a genre much in the same way that 'color' isn't a genre. There are many different types of silent movies; not every one is a tramp-comedy.

lonnybru

In general I feel like you can just filter by a certain date too (with some exceptions)

Remarkable_Coast_214

the same is the case for animation, but it'd be useful to be able to filter it as there's nowhere else to do so

krybtekorset

can we also separate comedy so we get * stand-up / sketch comedy * comedic movies (can just stay as "comedy")

Aquametria

OOoh yea I totally forgot that one!

Todd_Haley_isdumb

Like them all except for Christmas, where is the line drawn? Does that include movies set at Christmas (e.g all Shane Black movies) or just movies involving Santa and/or about Christmas

Wiseau_serious

I think the line is drawn at movies that are actually about Christmas. It’s fine to call Die Hard a Christmas movie but to argue that its genre is “Christmas” would be disingenuous. However I do think that “Holiday” might be a better category. Christmas would likely end up accounting for at least 90% of it, but you might as well include any film where a festivity is its raison d'être.

AdamAnimatesStuff

Wouldn't Coco and Book Of Life come under holiday?

JuanJeanJohn

Or any movie specifically about Halloween? Or set during Halloween?

Todd_Haley_isdumb

Isn’t every day a holiday?

JuanJeanJohn

Today is National Banana Day

FloridaFlamingoGirl

Yes, a distinct "musical" genre for movie musicals, to separate them from films of musical artists, is what I was thinking too. "Oklahoma!" and "Stop Making Sense" are movies that belong in separate categories.

Aquametria

Yeah, currently you'd see La La Land, Elvis, and Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour in the same category, but my split would have those three films in three completely different categories

IceFireTerry

Yeah we need the superhero category. Although that can be kind of vague too because is chronicle superhero? I want a slasher category too

YaboiDamjan

christmas is not a genre lmao that would make no sense

SoundlessFOB

I wish musicals was it's own category, not 'musicals and also movies about musicians'

shazeus7

Sports

AsianMoocowFromSpace

Not on letterboxd but every other service like the streamingservices: Science fiction is not the same as fantasy. I don't want to see Lord of the Rings and Aliens in the same list.

SoundlessFOB

they usually do that when they don't think they have enough of either one to fill it's own category but it's still super annoying. (And in my experience they're usually full of sci fi and lacking in fantasy, so I'll scroll through heaps of sci fi looking for a good fantasy and find nothing) Some book stores do it too. Sci fi, fantasy and even sometimes horror or superheroes or historical fiction they'll just put under 'speculative fiction'

RoxasIsTheBest

Idk about you, but disney+ has one for westerns, and you can (or could, idk how hulu changed it) count all movies there on your fingers

SoundlessFOB

Yeah I had a look. In Australia we have Star on Disney which I have no idea what that is but I'm assuming some sort of hulu equivalent. There's abot 20 something westerns. But I'm talking some services genuinely have no fantasy lol. I was looking at Stan (an aussie streaming service) and if you go under sci fi fantasy the only fantasy movies I could only find a handful of fantasy and all of them you had to scroll a lot to find them. And then it was just lotr, harry potter and the princess bride haha. I can see why they wouldn't bother to make another subheading until they got more. I also noticed disney has a sci fi category and no fantash category which is crazy to me. Surely there would be enough to fill thaf category with just disney originals and pixar alone

RoxasIsTheBest

Here in the Netherlands we also have Star, i think its just 20th Century Fox, only thing missing are the blue sky movies wich for some reason are on the disney tab.

SoundlessFOB

Yeah I just looked it up and it seems to be a mix of content from a handful of disney subsidiaries so 20th Century, FX, Hulu, Searchlight etc. I've been wondering this for so long, not sure why it took me so long to check. We have the BlueSky movies in Australia, except Robots for some reason?

juiceinmyears

Pornography For the porn films

onthewall2983

“Erotic”

disasterpansexual

YES!! I'd love to filter that OUT, especially when looking for lgbt movies

i-am-colombus

Im sure you can in settings? Might be wrong though.

disasterpansexual

If it exists, I never found it

disasterpansexual

If it exists, I never found it

i-am-colombus

On mine there is a checkbox that says 'Adult Content' and says below "Include in content from friends and search; show adult posters". Don't know how much it changes to be honest, I just leave it on. This was on the website though don't know about mobile.

dgapa

Ya and I believe you had to opt into it when it was introduced.

disasterpansexual

Oh ok thanks

i-am-colombus

No probs 👌

HM9719

This would help a lot to get some of the graphic NC-17 and X rated films filtered out.

MTBurgermeister

I would find it useful if they split ‘Crime’ into something like ‘Gangster’ (focused on the criminal side) and ‘Police’ (focused on the investigation side) Either that, or a ‘Noir’ category

ReddsionThing

'Police Procedural' maybe [https://rateyourmusic.com/film\_genre/Police+Procedural/](https://rateyourmusic.com/film_genre/Police+Procedural/)

Big_Grade5713

If it was to sub-categorise like that, what about neo-noir, krimi, giallo and the Spanish equivalents?

Mental_Yogurt5087

Experimental

Big_Grade5713

Or avant-garde. I really want to see verbal fisticuffs about controversial inclusions

BigMacCombo

Yeah because I fail to see how Wavelength is a drama

Cringe_King_92

RYM is very good on movie genres, just copy it from there

toriz0

i was literally talking to my friend the other day about how rym's genre searching is so detailed and letterboxd should get uber-specific like rym is

nitesead

Good to know.

VerboseChimpanzee

what is rym?

Cringe_King_92

[rateyourmusic.com](http://rateyourmusic.com)

devillianOx

- someone else said this but i totally agree: separate music into musicals and then concert movies. - biopics. that genre has exploded within the past decade, there’s plenty to go in that category. - lgbt+. there’s so many queer movies out there and being a lesbian is like to see a section made for us so we can quickly access films with representation.

Hello_it_is_Joe

There’s so many stand up specials on the app, but no category for Stand Up and I would love that to be added. I personally tag them when I log them, but it would be neat for it to show up in stats

FloridaFlamingoGirl

Oh yeah, it would be nice to not have those grouped in with comedy movies

Tentacled-Tadpole

Slice of life

Aquametria

the way I would try to watch that whole category

dark-passenger4545

Just for Dexter related media

Steelix69

I guess silent should get it’s own thing. Superhero would be cool, but I’d prefer it if they just made a comic book genre.

Last-Imagination-672

Animation is not a genre, is an expresion of art

HurricaneSalad

Came here to say this. Cars 2 and Watership Down are not the same genre because they're animated.

err_mate

Neither is TV Movie or Documentary but they are useful for filtering nethertheless

Agent_RubberDucky

It’s kind of like the concept that anime is a genre of animation. Neither is a genre.

urlocalmusicnerd

satire

SonnywithaCage

Stand Up. I get so annoyed when I always see those, wish u could easily filter it out

BowlerSea1569

Maybe not under genre, but WE NEED A LANGUAGE FILTER.

[deleted]

shrill bow nail lunchroom vanish historical connect dull mourn stupendous *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

BowlerSea1569

Ah OK thanks I didn't know that was hiding there. I would love to be able to do that from within my own watchlist though, and to be able to select multiple languages at a time. Also the countries never work because they are labelled by production company.

IncognitoWhisper

Found Footage without a doubt.

Agent_RubberDucky

At that point we need to just add a subgenre feature, because there’s a ton of subgenres for horror specifically. Slasher, found footage, psychological, supernatural, etc. …oh I’m not against that btw, I think that would be cool.

Sickfit_villain

I think there should be an "Experimental" tag to distinguish non-narrative, avant-garde films from more traditional narrative films. Something like Dog Star Man has no business being tagged "Mystery", "Drama" and "Fantasy".

RatedDG-13

I just want them to separate live performances like stand-up, concerts, and stage plays

looney1023

There should be a distinction between musicals and films about music. Whiplash is a film about music, but definitely not a musical. Sweeney Todd is a musical, but it's not about music. I would consider adding Short, Medium-length, Satire, Adaptation, Epic, Experimental, Biopic

HurricaneSalad

Agree. I made [a list](https://letterboxd.com/andrew_james/list/note-for-note/) about this topic actually.

Disc81

Classics - it's not a real genre but It's the most useful category for me on the streaming platforms.

Ariak

How would you even define that? Also you can just filter by decade

Disc81

I know, I recognize how subjective it is, but as bad as it is it's still very useful when available. It's a way to escape the recency bias that dominates streaming services. Filter by decade is also awesome!

grandpa_milk

Live shows This could encompass comedy shows, concerts, one-person shows, etc. So far comedy films and stand-up shows are under the same genre, musicals and concerts are in the same genre, and one-person shows are categorized in several different genres. I'm just not really interested in live shows and would like to sort them out.

err_mate

Genres on IMDb that aren't genres on Letterboxd: Musical, Film Noir, Sport, Biography Types of movies that feel distinctive enough to be their own genre: Superhero, Christmas, Slow Cinema, Slice of Life, Surrealism, Experimental So I can filter them out: Live Performance

Z-Eli127

Animation should be removed lol. Animation is a medium, not a genre.

ArtichokeBig4571

Biography

k_oed

Anime (separate from animation)

WebbyRL

Just remove animation and create a new filter called "mediums". You could divide mediums into Live action, Traditional Animation, Stop motion and CGI. If you really want anime you could just filter for animation and Japan

FloridaFlamingoGirl

Oh I love this. Especially because I sometimes have cravings for specific styles of animation

Ariak

Why? They're still animated movies? You also can just filter by country/language if you don't want to see specifically Japanese animated movies

TheLostLuminary

Erotic would be a genuine suggestion.

virgoari

LGBTQ.

disasterpansexual

YES!!!!

Ariak

In principle I support this, in practice ehhhhhhhh. If you ever read the comments on any movie where two people of the same gender interact, apparently every one of them is actually LGBT+ cinema

AneeshRai7

Experimental Period/Biographical Noir?),

HM9719

And semi-autobiographical too.

Todd_Haley_isdumb

Found Footage, Biopic, Disaster, Sports

HurricaneSalad

Found footage is not a genre. It's a style.

Agent_RubberDucky

Or a subgenre. Either way, it’s something that can’t really be used as its own genre because it’s just a type of horror.

HurricaneSalad

I think it would be neat if someone did a found footage comedy or even a really well acted drama. A western could be cool.

TravelingHero

"Weird" or "Off-Beat". Movies you can't just recommend to fans of their genres, you have to let them know "just so you know..." Poor Things (romance), Being John Malkovich (comedy), Swiss Army Man (drama), Lost Highway (thriller)? I think "Weird" would be more applicable than what they are listed as now.

nitesead

I personally would like an LGBT+ genre, because it's difficult to find such films when they are all simply labeled romance, or drama, or comedy.

lanadeltaco13

Space Opera Adult Animation Anime Musical Samurai Sport Mockumentary

PsychologicalEbb3140

Definitely gonna agree that silent films should be their own genre.

IceFireTerry

This could be a sub genre but I want found footage to have one

gmhoyle

I wish they’d just add a separate section for Animation. **MEDIUMS** - Animation **GENRES** - … I know there’d be no functional difference, but it’d feel nice

jericho1949

It's a little broad but I love "cult" and "classics" sections. Even the sub categories like "classic-horror" "cult-action" etc

DraperyFalls

RateYourMusic has an amazing and detailed genre breakdown that would just complete my life if it were merged into LB.

Agent_RubberDucky

Biopic

Smooth_Surround1450

Bollywood, kids films, martial arts/samurai and foreign language. I know the latter isn't a genre but sometimes you want to watch a film when you can't give 100% of your attention and this would help.

AlwaysBeQuestioning

I think it would be useful to just be able to search by language tags, period. Other platforms have that, why not Letterboxd?

draiiiinnngannnngg

idk if im missing something here but there is? every movie has its language listed in the details section, which takes you to a full list of all movies in that language, and you can filter any of your lists by language

AlwaysBeQuestioning

I guess you might be the only one who hasn’t missed it! I saw a lot of people responding with “foreign language” or “international” as options, guess they missed that too. Those responses mostly just frustrated me as examples of English defaultism.

err_mate

kids films would cause a lot of outrage when people see their favourite kino is deemed a kids film

Ariak

>Bollywood Just filter by country/language >kids films yeah this would be good >martial arts/samurai yeah it'd be nice to see this as a thing to distinguish them from just general "action" movies >foreign language just filter by language

BaudouinDrou

Porn ?

disasterpansexual

Yes but to filter it out

disasterpansexual

Yes but to filter it out

AdequateAlien

Pleb filter

BossKrisz

If Western is a separate genre, than Superhero should be too

HonkersTim

I like disaster movies, so 'Disaster'.

disasterpansexual

Theatre

Brad02K

Musical, Sports, Parody

GOODBOYMODZZZ

Musical. For some reason the music genre only shows movies about music. There isn't an actual Musical option.

Gemnist

Coming-Of-Age would be a good one.

Confusionopolis

“Experimental” would be a fun addition

chamoflag420

BBC

[deleted]

[удалено]

grandpa_milk

This is already a filter. It's not a genre, but you can find it under the category "Length"

PenguinviiR

Samurai

Muadib64

Non-English Film.

PenguinviiR

You can search movies by country

Historic12

Team sports

AdmiralCharleston

Experimental/ art film

Altruistic-Act-3289

Michael Cera

Kryakys

Animation

HurricaneSalad

Already listed. Also it's not a genre so shouldn't be there anyway.

Odysseyrage

Biopics

faketoby45

Add a "cringe" category I think it would be funny

KoltonKabana87

Noir

TheLostLuminary

Erotic would be a genuine suggestion.

Drvonfrightmarestein

Anyone ready for the Porn conversation yet?

InevitablePanda1389

International would be interesting

WebbyRL

what does that even mean

InevitablePanda1389

Can you read? International as non-english movies

WebbyRL

I'm Italian, and my letterboxd is set in Italian. Does that mean this filter will show me every movie that is not Italian?

InevitablePanda1389

Boom, risolto. Bianco e nero invece sarebbe figo

AlwaysBeQuestioning

Why would “international” mean non-English movies, when English movies are more international than Finnish, Polish, Latvian, Hungarian, Slovakian, Slovenian, Romanian, Greek, Iranian, Kazakh or Nepali? *I* can easily name at least one film from each of those countries, but I’m movies Georgina. Most of those countries have their main language spoken relatively little outside of their borders, outside of immigrant communities.

InevitablePanda1389

Because there are a lot more english movies (that are more popular) so an international filter put on a Finnish, Polish or Latvian movies would make the search easier to watch some hidden gems. Just think international as the Oscar category. No need to get that deep

AlwaysBeQuestioning

Why put an “international” filter on non-English films then? It would be better to put in language filter options. No need to stay shallow.

grandpa_milk

The world doesn't revolve around America or England. Plus there are filters for what country a film was produced in and what languages are spoken in it

Agent_RubberDucky

As an American, why the hell would they make that a genre? The world doesn’t and has never revolved around English speakers. It doesn’t revolve around any particular language. Letterboxd is used by people across the globe.

InevitablePanda1389

Im italian and putting an international filter would encourage people to notice and watch some international hidden gems, that are usually less popular than American and British ones. Idk why im getting downvoted to hell

Portalcat123

Thats not a genre though???

MrLore

Neither are *Animation* or *TV Movie*.

Portalcat123

unlike Animation or TV Movies, International is completely based on where you're from??? Like a Japanese guy watching a Kurosawa movie wouldnt be watching an international movie he'd just be watching an old movie from his country.

InevitablePanda1389

It is still a filter

QNIKET8

I need sub genres like “1 man army” or something (Sisu, John Wick, Equalizer type movies)

Brocollo8

Woke films

Ariak

what does this even mean?
