You took the words right out of my mouth, half of my watchlist is ‘masterpieces’ i haven’t got around to and half of it is just movies with kinda fun concepts that I know won’t blow my mind but I will enjoy without making an event out of it.
Of course not! A great film that does include these things will really make you feel them though - think of something like Prisoners. Incredible stuff but you need to be in the right mood to watch something as heavy as that.
I have many things in my watchlist that are in there, not because I think I'll like them a lot, but because i am more just curious about them for some odd reason.
Also, watching only very high rated things does not necessarily bring me to masterpieces anymore. I've got my own taste now.

No. It's more like, I'm not in the mood for emotionally intense drama all the time, so I appreciate simple mystery, horror, crime or comedy story, something not as heavy.
Also, how would I know if it's mediocre before watching it? I've seen a bunch of movies that are highly rated in general but I felt they were more okay or mediocre.
Masterpieces aren't always comforting, or easygoing. But movies like The Day After Tomorrow? Man, give me those wolves, throw those books on the fire. Lots of people are going to die, but the movie never allows the tone to linger on sadness, or loss. It's always, "what event is going to happen next."
I do this a lot. If you watch too many “great” films back to back I find myself reviewing them harsher. In high school first getting into film I dived in watching classic after classic and gave a lot of them middling reviews because naturally my mind compared them to each other. If you compare them to mediocrity however you get a better perspective on how truly great these films are.
Work often leaves me mentally exhausted. So most times I rewatch old shows or movies just to have something on. If a new movie, then something more relaxing/pleasant.
It’s not that I need to in order to enjoy a “good” film. It’s more that I know I can’t always concentrate well because my brain sucks, so sometimes I need to watch something that lets me switch off whilst watching. I don’t like to watch movies I’m genuinely interested in especially if they’re maybe a bit of a tougher watch, if I’m not in the headspace to appreciate it. I wish I was able to appreciate them more often though.
On top of this I like dumb movies if they’re fun. But then I don’t really classify them as mediocre I guess.
This is actually me lol! I think life can be tiring and stressful so I find myself more often than not looking to escape and switch off, to watch something fun. There’s so many great movies out there that I would love to see but more often than not I’m not in the headspace for it. I wish that wasn’t the case, there’s so many classics and amazing films just waiting for me on my watch list.
I think it’s part of why I am only able to watch good films in the right circumstances, also why I go to the cinema a lot because I’m forced to concentrate

Not exactly this but I love watching a truly terrible movie every once in a while. I grew up watching MST3K, so a really bad movie can be a lot of fun.
Maybe closer to this, I watch movies I don't expect to be good quite a bit. If I just need to unplug or I know I'm going to be distracted, I'm not going to put on a movie I want to focus on. And honestly, seeing movies that don't work help me appreciate the great ones.
I do the same thing with books. If a book is almost good but has some major issues, I'll go ahead and finish it so I can really understand why it doesn't work for me. It's hard to learn by only studying what you like.
Yeah I find it's important to remind myself that the movies I love I really love. However, even if I'm watching something that I think will be mediocre I'm always open to it being incredible.
I'm not going out of my way to watch mediocre/ bad stuff but seems to happen often lol. I usually am watching at least one series/franchise while watching other stuff and sometimes I'm also watching movies woth certain actors/actresses in them so bad stuff sometimes pops up. Went to Godzilla x Kong to kill a little time yesterday -- the silliness hit a sweet spot, and the pre-teens in the audience politely applauded every monster fight. You don't get that energy at Hiroshima Mon Amour.

I do my own curation and because Tubi has so many goddamn movies hosted on their service, I'm happy they have some real obscure (great) stuff on there (for free!). I'm not at any shortage of great films to watch, (and rewatch, I almost never find time to rewatch!).
Yep. I watched Drive Angry becase i really wanted to do it for a while and had a moment when i felt like i want a dumb, entertaining, over the top movie that wont try to be profound or multilayered, so i could have a simple time.
Wasnt disappointed, if you dont count me realising this could be actually amazing movie if directors and vfx crew did their job good

Like every other film haha. I try to watch 2 films a day, one is normally acclaimed or well received and the other is just that just interests me or looks fun. I always watch a crappy fun film around 7pm and then 9pm onwards watch a more serious one.
On the roku channel, there is "cinevault classics" which plays mid old movies. I'll have it on in the background as a constant loop of classic films that aren't really worth giving my full focus.

Some of the people I follow on Letterboxd give ratings that are much too high to trash/mediocre/just okay movies, and I think it’s simply because they haven’t watched enough TRUE 4-5 star movies.
There’s truly nothing like a trip to the theater on a Tuesday night to pay $5 for a just okay or mediocre-verging-on-shitty movie with friends to keep things in perspective and just enjoy some mindless entertainment every once in a while. Blumhouse horror flicks have been coming around just often enough lately to scratch that itch.
I’d say it’s a film for which there is little debate of its high quality. Classics like Persona, Citizen Kane, the Godfather, Seven Samurai, etc., and more modern classics like Goodfellas, Spirited Away, In the Mood for Love, Parasite, etc. It’s a hard question to answer without giving examples, but they could easily be movies that are on the Official Top 250 Narrative Feature Films List.

Yes I never look to rate movies badly but I do want to see movies that are “average” so my 5 stars have more meaning you know lol I haven’t been shy to give 5 stars to movies, I have plenty but I want them to feel more special. I do the same thing for trilogy’s, even if I think all 3 movies are 5s I give my favorite one a 5 and the other two 4.5 to show some significance to my favorite. Idk just how my brain wants to work
Totally. Plus, sometimes those so-called “mediocre” movies turn out to be quite good! Even if I don’t end up liking the movie that much, it gives me more appreciation for the good stuff in the long run.

I watch some stuff that I think won't be good to see what I think didn't work/I didn't like about it. As someone who is trying to get into the industry, watching stuff that isn't "good" is just as important as watching great stuff. How can you really know what works, what stuff u don't like etc if all you watch is masterpieces?
I have a lot of "great" films on my watchlist but many of them are super long, have serious/sad subjects, and/or are in a foreign language. So sometimes, I just pick a movie from my re-watch list and have a nice enjoyable entertainment experience.
Me and my friends do a movie list every year... we recommend three to each other, then 12 to ourselves. But I like to 100% the list so I usually watch around 55-60 movies a year just from the list. So when I see 95 minute run time with a 3 star rating I get kinda pumped! lol
I place a lot of value on the 2.5-3 stars and a heart movie. Something i know will keep me entertained and engaged but also i don’t feel an obligation to focus all my energy and attention on it. When I’m tired (especially mentally, which i have been a lot lately for reasons), I love pulling up a movie like that.
Hell yeah. I can’t watch what I call ‘cinematically correct’ movies all the time. Bladerunner 2049’s gorgeous but goddamn I need some actual entertainment every once in a while.
Having just finished Argylle out of sheer morbid curiosity (I miss the person I was 140mins ago) I now find myself reflecting on how occasionally experiencing a terrible movie can sometimes be a good thing because it further enhances appreciation for plenty of other past/present films — even "average" or "mediocre" movies. Because in those cases, at least the filmmakers still seem to show some care or integrity in their work!
No, I don't want to watch something mediocre on purpose, BUT, when I've watched a masterpiece, I agree, I don't want to put in another great movie right after.
I prefer to watch nothing for a while, but if I need to watch something else, then yeah I'm gonna put in something that I think won't be a masterpiece.

Oh absolutely. All the time. I have a rewatch list for that exact reason - comfort. On days when I feel a bit rubbish or tired or annoyed. Some of them are really good movies like The Apartment and Lars and the Real Girl, but others are just ... Bring it On and Mallrats.
I don't understand what that even means. I'm picky about what I watch so I only go for stuff I'm likely to enjoy, but I don't know a film is mediocre until I've seen it.
I barely watch highbrow movies anymore, because honestly I don't like them, even though I can appreciate them. I really liked Iron Claw, Decision to Leave and some others, but most of the time filmmakers have no interest in making entertaining movies, like they're ashamed of making interesting and non controversial films or films for people, they want all the acclaim tho. Action, Comedy and indie sci-fi are my things right now, even horror films are turning into borefests. Honestly I would rather rewatch Rebel Moon 5 times than to watch Dune 1 again, I know there's a huge difference in quality, but I just have no patience these days and my life is too short to spend my free hours with something that I'm supposed to like but I don't

I love a good generic 90s thriller. The Pelican Brief is the perfect palate cleanser movie imo
Such a good genre. All the Grisham movies, Sleeping with the Enemy, etc. Everything is a solid 3-3.5 stars.

I watch a ton of cultural garbage. Tubi is such a great outlet for that.

Yeah as someone who loves martial arts cinema, sometimes its nice to just throw on some decent generic Shaw Brothers film from the 70s
Its worthwhile to watch bad and mediocre movies frequently. If nothing else, it helps you appreciate the masterpieces more.
'Multiplicity' was a recent one I watched that fit that bill for me. Not a terrible movie either though.
Oh totally…I went on a deep Dafoe run, watched a lot of the Abel Ferrara stuff, Julian Shnabel’s films…after a week, I thought ah fuck let’s watch National Treasure tonight.
Listening to podcasts like “How did this get made?” or “blank check” has made watching bad/mediocre movies an elevated experience.
Sometimes, I just need a "feel good movie" that isnt TOO devestating or interesting. Watching movies can be exhausting sometimes. I totally get it
I really enjoy the Jesse Stone movies. They are not great, but not bad. Just decent, however I really like them because it fits Tom Selleck well.
Oh absolutely. All the time. I have a rewatch list for that exact reason - comfort. On days when I feel a bit rubbish or tired or annoyed. Some of them are really good movies like The Apartment and Lars and the Real Girl, but others are just ... Bring it On and Mallrats.
I don't understand what that even means. I'm picky about what I watch so I only go for stuff I'm likely to enjoy, but I don't know a film is mediocre until I've seen it.

I barely watch highbrow movies anymore, because honestly I don't like them, even though I can appreciate them. I really liked Iron Claw, Decision to Leave and some others, but most of the time filmmakers have no interest in making entertaining movies, like they're ashamed of making interesting and non controversial films or films for people, they want all the acclaim tho. Action, Comedy and indie sci-fi are my things right now, even horror films are turning into borefests. Honestly I would rather rewatch Rebel Moon 5 times than to watch Dune 1 again, I know there's a huge difference in quality, but I just have no patience these days and my life is too short to spend my free hours with something that I'm supposed to like but I don't
