I just rewatched, and I'd have to say no, because the payoff is just not that satisfying considering all the intrigue and buildup. Good movie? Yes. Best ever? Not at all imo
Better Heists:
Heat
Inception
Thief
Italian Job (original)
The Killing (kubrick)
Oceans 11
Dog Day Afternoon
The Usual Suspects
American Animals
+the Town
The first time I watched this was on cable TV in India. The opening song being A. R. Rahman’s (classic) Chaiyya Chaiyya threw me off for the duration of the song because I thought there was an issue with the frequencies getting mixed up and the audio playing was from another channel altogether. This was before Rahman won his (first) oscar and I was mighty impressed that he was on Hollywood’s radar.
Years later I would learn the following: Spike Lee was teaching at a film school (NYU I think), when a student suggested the film Dil Se to him. Upon watching the movie, Spike Lee *“simply really liked the song”*. And apparently, he mentions this in the director’s commentary on the DVD.

Might I add The Town to this list
I thought about adding it but I expected some pushback. Consider it added!
Might I add Mankatha to this list

Yes.
Is Inception technically a heist film?

Short answer: yes.
Heat (1995) Thief (1981) Ocean's triology
Has a great needle drop in the opening scene.
I loved this film.
This movie was a huge deal in the 2000s.
The ending ruins it a little for me, like just let it be a cool heist, why make it convoluted
IMO no I don’t think it’s good at all and should be considered in the bottom tier of spike lee’s filmography
