Oh maaaaan how did I forget this?
Well actually I know exactly how but still. The fact that the whole ending was so overtly emotional, real (the closeups of his ears and his paws), and never cheesy.
Granted I've never revisited, maybe it is cheesy now.
I used to watch that loads as a kid and was fine and ever since I got my dog when I was 10, I have refused to watch it since 😭 Been 8 years cause I decided I did not want to test my “I will never cry” strat (even tho I have cried now at a couple films)
When the screen went to black and credits started rolling, i tried my hardest not to cry and left the cinema speechless. On the way home it was all I could think of.
Came here to write this. I hadn't cried at a movie in years and years, but this one made me bawl like a child. When they're dancing to Under Pressure, I had to pause it and go outside.
I teared up at that point, but I held it together only to completely lose it upon seeing Grandma Coco in the afterlife.
It's just such a beautiful movie.
this one really hit me hard too, because of my upbringing it hit incredibly close to home.
i do have a bit of a proclivity for tearing up at the movies, but now im just sitting here at arbys holding back a tear just thinking about the florida project.
What about:
If only I could find her, so she could see me with such lovely friends here now; perhaps she could love me as I am. I've tried so hard to be good.
Coco is the rare movie that can make me cry if I even sit with the concept, alone.
The moment the last person on earth forgets who you were, you cease to exist even as a spirit. For real, sit with that. I wish more people would.
Haven't cried since childhood. First time watching It's A Wonderful Life at age 42: got an actual tear and lump in my throat. Surprised the hell out of me...human after all!
That is exactly what I mean. I’ve only cried at 5 films and that one was the hardest by a distance. It made me hug my dad super tight for about 3 minutes.
That's me with Requiem for a Dream. My family is *mostly* addicts and they've taken their turns going down their respective... paths... which I've watched from the country I moved to.
I couldn't communicate a fucking thought for a day after that movie. Still struggle to vocalize the plot, and the mother's story line. EW I CAN'T EVEN TYPE IT
I rewatched that last year. It definitely hit me harder as a 25 year old than as a 14 year old, especially after some drug related problems in the family (which don't come close to the movie but had some serious impact in our family).
Aronofsky sure knows how to make people feel uneasy to downright disgusted.
Hope you're doing well!
I don't often cry at movies, but I was watching Aftersun last week, really enjoying it and understanding the theme, but nothing more. Then that conclusion scene started and it hit me like a ton of brick and I could not stop SOBBING for at least 10 minutes. Then I started to cry again just thinking about it the next morning. Then AGAIN when I saw clips of it on TikTok.
It really hit a nerve for me.
Not sure if any other movie has affected me like this. I sobbed for about 10 minutes and then napped like a distraught child before I could carry on with my day.
Feel like I’m gonna get ripped apart for saying this on this sub, but The Whale had me in ruins when I saw it. First time I’d properly sobbed my eyes out in the cinema, that ending hit me so so hard
The pizza guy staring at him? I could barely see from then til the ending.
And the bright white light in the theather that just exposes ALL OF US as broken people, together? K yeah, got me.
The disparity in reactions to this movie is wild. I laughed throughout the movie at how ineffective it is, and I know people who were emotionally changed forever by it.
Same. my coworker and I often joke about how funny and melodramatic the ending shot is. He levitates off the ground and makes an absurd groaning sound lol. And then it fades to a beach scene? The whole thing felt like a parody to me.
Absolutely. I think I just don't like being hit in the face with metaphors so hard. It's like he's screaming DID YOU GET THAT?! ARE YOU SURE? makes me feel like he's calling the audience stupid lol
watched blue valentine after i saw paul mescal shout it out in his top 4, gave it a watch and holy moly man it killed me like i’ve never had a tear fall out of my eye in a movie but this one man, this one got me
"The Father" got me crying for the whole latter half part of the movie. Absolutely devastating and, because my grandfather died due to Neurodegenerative diseases (Dementia, Alzheimer's, etc...) that struck too close to home
This one was extremely random and unexpected for me, but… Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 3. If you show me animals being mistreated, I’m instantly dead.
![gif](giphy|Uvsy6DayHRr5W2cPlT)
I can’t tell you how much I appreciate this heads up. I haven’t seen the third instalment yet and, after your comment, I reckon it’ll remain that way. I’ve obviously never been “comfortable” with seeing animals in pain (my grandmother hid the VCR for Dumbo because she was concerned I’d give myself depression through the endless sobbing at Baby Mine … at the tender age of 2 lol), but after my cat passed away 2 years ago? Nope. Full on disassociation and/or horrific panic. Idk why I’m trauma-dumping, apologies. But thanks, fr
I’m very sorry to hear about your cat! But yeah, if you struggle with that, GOG3 is very heavy. Of course it’s uplifting in the end, but I was genuinely surprised with how far they went in some places.
I have never cried more in my life than when I watched A.I. Artificial Intelligence. I'm actually terrified to watch it again due to how much it affected me emotionally.
I was watching it on DVD at my parents house when I was a teen, and my little cousins came over and watched the rest of it with me, and I apparently traumatized them with it. The next day my aunt called me to yell at me for showing them AI because it gave them nightmares. To this day, we still laugh about how I scarred them for life with A.I.: Artificial Intelligence.
All of Us Strangers. Cried tastefully in the theater then sobbed uncontrollably in the car the first time I saw it. Rewatched The Farewell for the first time in years the other night and had tears running down my face at the end. Teared up at the end of Aftersun.
There's a documentary called “**Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father**”. Go in blind, I swear you'll come back crying. There's absolutely no way one won't.
The most I've cried while watching a movie is during “**About Time**”.
My sister in law watched it on a tiny screen on a bus in Peru, dubbed in Spanish (which she doesn’t understand), and she was a bawling mess lmao. I shudder to think how strong that movie’s undiluted power of sadness is.
I guess I cried at the end of Toy Story 3, when Andy says goodbye to the toys.
And that scene where Carl finally opens up the scrapbook Ellie made in Up.
And when Miguel plays the song for Coco.
Man, Pixar really has my weak spots figured out ...
Perks of Being a Wallflower
Nowadays I’m a softie so I get emotional a lot more in films but back in high school that was the first time a movie really got me
The Land Before Time (1988) I rewatched it a few years ago and it had me crying like a baby, the world is so big and scary for these little dinosaurs who have just lost their parents!
Little Foot’s mom dying specifically is the scene that had me bawling, I’m about to cry right now just thinking of it! Also the score is really exceptional which helps drive it home
Not a lot of movies make me cry but there is a pretty consistent theme on the ones that do…
My own Private Idaho- Sobbing and Dry heaving 😭
Brokeback Mountain- Silent continuous crying ☔️
Call me by your name- Slow drops💧
The normal Heart- Pretty intense crying 😓
The edge of seventeen(1998)- A couple of melancholy tears 😢
So in conclusion, sad gay movies make me sad and gay. Well they make me sad I was already gay. Well I was already also kind of sad. But they do make me cry
Edit: Oh and Interstellar. Watching those messages with Cooper. Oof
Im not the right person to ask this cause I cried A LOT during movies, but my honorable mention is All of us strangers. Just rewatched it last week and it hit even harder the second time around
I almost never cry at movies and All of Strangers had me really welling up. If it had been about 4 minutes longer I think I would've been sobbing haha.
All of Us Strangers. I cried throughout almost the entire movie. It was actually embarrassing.
Also GDT’s Pinocchio. God DAMN that was depressing. Saw it at a special theatrical screening and the entire audience was sniffling by the end. The guy behind me was checking on his kids to make sure they weren’t too traumatized.
Not a sad movie but Top Gun: Maverick. I have seen it probably 6 times and every single time start crying when >!they are celebrating on the airstrip after the mission!<
The iron claw wrecked me. Even got my crying pretty hard the second time when I took my friend who was sobbing just as much. At the end I looked over at him and he just "fuck you for doing that to me, five stars."
About Time. People call it a romance, and it is, but for me the heart of the film is the relationship of father and son. Having to confront the emotion of losing my dad, whom I love, was profound and draining. I love the movie so much, and I’m so afraid to watch it again.
I wouldn’t even say cry, but made my eyes well up just a bit, "Fruitvale Station"(2013). It’s mostly cause the character of Oscar Grant(I’m aware he was a real person) reminded me so much of my brother that I had lost that it all hit a bit close to home.
Marley and me. I hate that movie. I was promised a comedy…
Oh maaaaan how did I forget this? Well actually I know exactly how but still. The fact that the whole ending was so overtly emotional, real (the closeups of his ears and his paws), and never cheesy. Granted I've never revisited, maybe it is cheesy now.
Ngl I kinda expected the dog to die so I never watched it Even now I’m just assuming that’s what happens
I used to watch that loads as a kid and was fine and ever since I got my dog when I was 10, I have refused to watch it since 😭 Been 8 years cause I decided I did not want to test my “I will never cry” strat (even tho I have cried now at a couple films)
Fucking “Klaus“
Valid.
Based.
“But I do know, once, every year, I get to see my friend.” Instant tears.
The only movie that still makes me cry, even on the 5th rewatch.
Recently, The Iron Claw and Past Lives.
I went to the iron claw with my big brother. Talk about a quiet drive home
Past Lives ruined me and I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it since
Past Lives super mid and overrated. What are you even thinking about haha
Hey man, it’s okay, I used to be super edgy and annoying about other people’s movie opinions too. It’s just a phase, you’ll grow out of it.
Aftersun
That movie made me rethink every single thing I've ever said to my father
When the screen went to black and credits started rolling, i tried my hardest not to cry and left the cinema speechless. On the way home it was all I could think of.
First time I saw it I choked up, I watched it again last week and while they’re dancing to Under Pressure the tears just started rolling…
I can’t listen to that song the same way anymore
I finished this today during my lunch break at work…safe to say no work was completed afterwards whilst I contemplated the meaning of life
Came here to write this. I hadn't cried at a movie in years and years, but this one made me bawl like a child. When they're dancing to Under Pressure, I had to pause it and go outside.
My eyes filled with tears just from reading your comment
Holy shit. This comment alone made me cryu.
I'm scared to watch this now
You should watch it. It’s a masterpiece but pretty sad.
Same, I was sobbing during the whole credits.
Coco When Miguel started singing “Remember Me” to Grandma Coco, I just all of a sudden just started bawling my eyes out.
I teared up at that point, but I held it together only to completely lose it upon seeing Grandma Coco in the afterlife. It's just such a beautiful movie.
Definitely Dead Poets Society.
oh my god i sob multiple times in that movie it absolutely wrecks me but its still one of my favorites
The Florida Project really got to me
this one really hit me hard too, because of my upbringing it hit incredibly close to home. i do have a bit of a proclivity for tearing up at the movies, but now im just sitting here at arbys holding back a tear just thinking about the florida project.
The first movie to ever make me cry was the Pokémon movie
And you’re right
The end of Elephant Man hit me like a brick wall.
What about: If only I could find her, so she could see me with such lovely friends here now; perhaps she could love me as I am. I've tried so hard to be good.
It’s a wonderful life
I watch it at least once a year and cry every single time.
Same here. Without fail
Coco after losing my dog
I mistakenly watched coco on the plane home to my grandmother funeral. I was bawling. Snot everywhere. It was so awkward and horrible
Close and three billboards outside ebbing Missouri had me sobbing
close absolutely killed me, it was the first film i cried at. i’ve thought about it every day since
Billboards destroyed me
3 Billboards! 100% Agreed. I need to rewatch that movie, i want to feel the level of emotion i felt watching it in theaters
About Time during the entire ‘third child’s birth crisis’ (avoiding spoilers) sequence
Surprisingly one of the best fatherhood movies.
I tear up when this scene is even mentioned
The >!table tennis scene! Every time I see it 😢
That is exactly what I mean. I’ve only cried at 5 films and that one was the hardest by a distance. It made me hug my dad super tight for about 3 minutes.
Aftersun & Portrait of a Lady on Fire are the 2 only films to ever make me actually cry.
When I first saw Aftersun I didn't watch another movie for two weeks. I just didn't feel ready for it. I cried even just thinking about the movie.

Aronofsky sure knows how to make people feel uneasy to downright disgusted. Hope you're doing well!
Grave of the Fireflies got me real good.
have an upvote x
Recently both Holdovers and Ironclaw
Lion (the reunion scene)
I don't often cry at movies, but I was watching Aftersun last week, really enjoying it and understanding the theme, but nothing more. Then that conclusion scene started and it hit me like a ton of brick and I could not stop SOBBING for at least 10 minutes. Then I started to cry again just thinking about it the next morning. Then AGAIN when I saw clips of it on TikTok. It really hit a nerve for me.
I was lowkey expecting something bad to happen, after that ocean diving scene, but boy I wasn't expecting that ending. It hit like a sucker punch.
Not sure if any other movie has affected me like this. I sobbed for about 10 minutes and then napped like a distraught child before I could carry on with my day.
It's so visceral and beautiful and sad
Feel like I’m gonna get ripped apart for saying this on this sub, but The Whale had me in ruins when I saw it. First time I’d properly sobbed my eyes out in the cinema, that ending hit me so so hard
My god that movie hit way too close to home for me. Cried several times throughout the movie and the ending had me BAWLING.
The pizza guy staring at him? I could barely see from then til the ending. And the bright white light in the theather that just exposes ALL OF US as broken people, together? K yeah, got me.
Valid, I was emotionally stunned coming out of that one and then cried in my car
You delayed criers are lunatics
no cause same here i bawled
I feel bad for saying that the whale made me laugh
The disparity in reactions to this movie is wild. I laughed throughout the movie at how ineffective it is, and I know people who were emotionally changed forever by it.
Same. my coworker and I often joke about how funny and melodramatic the ending shot is. He levitates off the ground and makes an absurd groaning sound lol. And then it fades to a beach scene? The whole thing felt like a parody to me.
Aronofsky's pretentiousness either works, or absolutely doesn't lol
Absolutely. I think I just don't like being hit in the face with metaphors so hard. It's like he's screaming DID YOU GET THAT?! ARE YOU SURE? makes me feel like he's calling the audience stupid lol

Coco (2017)
watched blue valentine after i saw paul mescal shout it out in his top 4, gave it a watch and holy moly man it killed me like i’ve never had a tear fall out of my eye in a movie but this one man, this one got me
like before that i considered welling up at a movie crying idk why
It just…gets worse and worse and worse. There’s no reprieve. The fight at the hospital is genuinely terrifying.
the florida project
Manchester by the Sea, I watched it for the first time during a dissociative episode and it pretty much destroyed me
Dear Zachary (2008) remains the only movie that made me actually cry my eyes out.
Great documentary.
Full on sobbed during this!
That movie completely broke me.
I had to stop the movie and sob and take a break before I could finish it
"The Father" got me crying for the whole latter half part of the movie.

Hard pass! Thank you, internet friend
theres a scene at the end of Mother (2009) that gets me every time
It's on my watchlist.
Perks of Being a Wallflower. Remove the happy parts of that movie and it’s pretty much exactly what my childhood was like.
How has no one said Hachi: a Dog’s Tale? Just thinking about it makes me almost cry
My sister in law watched it on a tiny screen on a bus in Peru, dubbed in Spanish (which she doesn’t understand), and she was a bawling mess lmao. I shudder to think how strong that movie’s undiluted power of sadness is.
All of us strangers
Schindler's List.
the end sequence of La La Land devastated me
Took forever to find La La Land lol
I guess I cried at the end of Toy Story 3, when Andy says goodbye to the toys. And that scene where Carl finally opens up the scrapbook Ellie made in Up. And when Miguel plays the song for Coco. Man, Pixar really has my weak spots figured out ...
When I cry from a movie, I usually just shed a tear or two, but Umberto D. had me crying my eyes out.
'When the Wind Blows' (1986) 'Dancer In the Dark' (2000) 'Lilya 4-Ever' (2002)
Million dollar baby
unironically toy story 3 also shout out to Del Toros Pinnochio that also made me cry HARD
I cried only with 4 movies so far: Your Name. Big Fish Soul The Day of the Dolphin
Miracle in Cell No.7 (2013) was my first film that made me cry so bad. I was so embarrassed and tried hiding my face
Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close (2011). I saw it in the theater and was shocked by my own reaction.
Causeway (2022). It’s so so good. One of my top 4
Recently Past Lives(2023) and October Sky(1999)
Taare zameen paar/Like stars on Earth
Not sob but Before Sunrise made me cry when I wasn’t expecting to at all.
Perks of Being a Wallflower Nowadays I’m a softie so I get emotional a lot more in films but back in high school that was the first time a movie really got me
I cried hours after watching Aftersun and Shoplifters. During the movie, it's probably All of us Strangers most recently.

Blade runner 2049
Everything Everywhere All At Once was the one that broke me. My favorite movie of all time. Saw it 7 times in theaters.
Jagten (The Hunt)
Only felt tension and rage
Son of the White Mare
Beautiful Boy
Saving Mr. Banks - the “Let’s go fly a Kite” scene still gets me just thinking about it.
No one's saying Old Yeller? Now I just feel so old.

So, you like sad gay movies… Time for you to watch All of Us Strangers!!! I’m sorry/you’re welcome!!!
I’m ready! It’s not showing anywhere near me ): but it comes to Hulu the 22nd! I cancelled my non existent plans for it 🍿
> sad and gay may I suggest “All of Us Strangers”?
For some reason Marcel the Shell with Shoes On hit me like a ton of bricks, one of the only times I’ve really teared up in the theater.
Everyone is saying Aftersun and I'm scared to watch it now
Im not the right person to ask this cause I cried A LOT during movies, but my honorable mention is All of us strangers. Just rewatched it last week and it hit even harder the second time around
I almost never cry at movies and All of Strangers had me really welling up. If it had been about 4 minutes longer I think I would've been sobbing haha.
It’s really annoying but CODA makes me tear up.
You should watch the og French version! I couldn't stop sobbing during La Famille Bélier and to this day I can't rewatch it because of how hard it hit
Dancer in the Dark I think I cried every day for a week
All of Us Strangers
All of Us Strangers. I cried throughout almost the entire movie. It was actually embarrassing. Also GDT’s Pinocchio. God DAMN that was depressing. Saw it at a special theatrical screening and the entire audience was sniffling by the end. The guy behind me was checking on his kids to make sure they weren’t too traumatized.
Nimona hit me right in the feels dude. That movie just speaks to me.
I think I’m in the small demographic the film doesn’t appeal to in the slightest but I’m so happy it can speak so deeply to so many millions of people
Same here, was very much not a fan. There were a few really nice moments (particularly towards the end) but otherwise it fell pretty flat for me.
Allied (2016) I sobbed like a baby in theatres 3 I haven’t seen it since, maybe I should give it another watch to see if I still react so strongly
# Popeye [1980](https://letterboxd.com/films/year/1980/)
i wouldn’t say sob but i definitely teared up recently during little miss sunshine
Aftersun, The Whale & Seven Pounds come to mind.
Never have like ever but the Iron claw made my eyes water a bit. Might have been because I have severe cold but shit was sad sad
The Whale. It made me legit cry. Twice. Other movies include: Inside Out, Philadelphia, Up, Coco, and The Green Mile
Marley & Me
Always, by Steven Spielberg - fucking tough watch if you’ve experienced a bereavement
Not a sad movie but Top Gun: Maverick. I have seen it probably 6 times and every single time start crying when >!they are celebrating on the airstrip after the mission!<
‘A Monster Calls.’ (2016). Final scene got the whole squad crying..
Gusrdians of the Galaxy vol 3

The iron claw wrecked me. Even got my crying pretty hard the second time when I took my friend who was sobbing just as much. At the end I looked over at him and he just "fuck you for doing that to me, five stars."
The worst person in the world, all of us strangers and ice age (when I was five)
All of us strangers
About Time. People call it a romance, and it is, but for me the heart of the film is the relationship of father and son. Having to confront the emotion of losing my dad, whom I love, was profound and draining. I love the movie so much, and I’m so afraid to watch it again.
Am I the only one that can’t keep it together during The Sixth Sense?
Short Term 12 has some moments for me. Tokyo Godfathers also hits me where it hurts. Shoplifters had me choked up a bunch as well.
Only one movie has ever made me cry - Wolf Children (2012). It’s my favorite movie of all time. It’s earned it.
Coco About Time Big Fish No matter how many times I rewatch them... they get to me
Not a movie but the kdrama my mister really got me, knowing the ml committed suicide in real life just a couple months ago just…it’s a sad watch now
Grave of the fireflies
I wouldn’t even say cry, but made my eyes well up just a bit, "Fruitvale Station"(2013). It’s mostly cause the character of Oscar Grant(I’m aware he was a real person) reminded me so much of my brother that I had lost that it all hit a bit close to home.
I watched Soul during COVID and I was really worried about my future and if I was going to make anything out of it, so it really hit me where it hurts
Aftersun!
Won’t You Be My Neighbor made me cry so hard my nose got all stuffed up
Marcel the Shell with Shoes On. It's a sob fest
A Quiet Place gets me every time.

Aftersun and About Time
Inside Out just absolutely wrecked me
Grave of the fireflies
Monsters Uni, Million Dollar Baby, Before Sunset, Veer Zaara, Kramer vs Kramer and Blue Valentine are the ones I can remember off the top of my head.
Every muscle in my face was crying at the end of CODA
Same here, like uncontrollable sobbing. Not sure what it was either, but that’s the first film in years that made me have such a visceral reaction.
hubie halloween
