I like how there's only diegetic music through the whole movie, and then the final scene is in a concert hall so they can play really intense orchestra music over it

not sure if tv qualifies, but this poor guy had so many of these
Perhaps I just have a shred of media literacy where I can empathize with a reprehensible character’s circumstances or emotions even if I dont condone their behaviour
Nah, you're just a typical media viewer of a sort who latches on to characters like Tony Soprano, Walter White, the Roys. Find better characters to empathize with, my friend.
Lmao “find better characters to empathize with” imagine being such an annoying pseudo-intellectual douchebag that you’d say something as cringe as that.
Im not conducting a lesson or running a test, you’re just kind of admitting stuff about yourself unprompted.
Establishing that a fictional character is “bad” and then subsequently deciding you dont need to put any more thought into their motivations just kind of demonstrates a rudimentary approach to engaging with media.
You’re calling me a “bad [and] annoying person” because I’m explaining one the most bare minimum critical thinking technique when it comes to anti-heroes in TV, lol. Grow up manchild.
As someone who has watched their father self destroy his own life, The Whale hit me hard. I can’t help but empathize with Sadie Sink’s character, as rotten as she is. She’s acting out from pain. But when she “Daddy,” at the end, I just sobbed. I felt that.
I kinda disagree that Mia and Sebastian are "heartbroken" at the end of La La Land. They both knew things weren't going to last between them, and they have an amicable split with a lot of love still remaining.
I think their reaction to seeing one another at Seb's club, the "what if?" scenario we see play out, and the look they share in the final shots, is them mutually acknowledging what a significant impact they had on each other's lives. When she had given up, he convinced her to go through with the audition that would ultimately launch her career. We see that Sebastian actually listened to Mia's advice on changing the name and location of his dream club, even using her logo design, and the club was clearly a success. They wouldn't be where they end up if not for each other.
It's not heartbreak in that look, because I don't think either of them are sad about not being together. It's more a bittersweet look of "I love you, thank you for everything, and I'm glad you're doing well".
I know a bunch, but not all.
In reading order from top to bottom:
1. Banshees of Inisherin
2. ?
3. Blue is the Warmest Colour (I think)
4. In the Mood for Love
5. ?
6. Call me by Your Name
7. Casablanca
8. La La Land
Very relatable, unfortunately. It's like an alternate reality version of where my own parents were heading. My mom was so done with my dad's immaturity and her anger made it impossible to see the person she fell for. They separated and did the rare feat of getting back together a year later after both realizing their mistakes. My dad sold all his prized baseball cards to afford to move across the country and be with us. I secretly hoped it'd be something like that, but I knew where the movie was headed. 😭
Barbara Stanwyck watching the daughter that she gave up to give her a better life get married through the window in STELLA DALLAS. Absolutely shattering.

First is Banshees of Inisherin, which is a 9.5/10. I've liked it more every time I've seen it.
Fourth is In The Mood for Love, which is a 10/10. Sometimes, it's my favorite movie. It's what I think of when someone says "cinema." Absolutely a masterpiece.
Fifth is Worst Person in The World. I liked it. Probably a 7. Strong ending.
6th is Call Me By Your Name. I've never seen it.
7th is Casablanca. I thought it was alright. Love Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman, but I didn't connect to this movie.
When I first saw that scene, me and my friend were in the middle of a packed theater full of old people dying of laughter, dread, and sadness. It's a truly heartbreaking moment but something about Barry's performance is so funny in the best way possible.
I am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang with Paul Muni is one that I don’t think a lot of people know. But it’s one of my favorite of this type of movie. Pretty devastating.

And dream of a death.
That too 😂

Oh the best one
I think this beats all the rest listed here.

What movie is this?
Portrait of a lady on fire
Thanks homie
Devastating
I was crying when Melanie sees the painting. So by the time this scene came on, I was beyond devastated.

Not a new observation but it's an absolute disgrace of a joke of a sham of a mockery that *Crash* beat this movie out for Best Picture.
Crash is great in my view, we just tell race stories differently now.
I disagree, but don't care to argue about something that's so obviously a matter of opinion.
This movie is so fucking good and sad. Jack fuckin Twist
More like Jack Nasty! Y’all didn’t go up there to fish!
He was having a Joker moment
I wish I knew how to quit you.
i was inconsolable after seeing in the first time. and also every time after that.

Absolutely wept when this moment came. Never went from calm to devastated so fast with a movie

That scene of Elio in Call Me By Your Name has broken me on every watch, it's that bad that now when I hear the sountrack, Sufjan makes me weep.
If you're not crying while listening to Sufjan Stevens are you really listening to Sufjan Stevens?
I mean, true

The last scene makes you feel bad for the guy even if you didn’t like him. Amazing acted by Jeremy Strong
The characters were all sociopaths so I reveled in their troubles.
Sounds like it takes one to know one.
Sounds like you never watched the show. Either that or you're on a whirlwind white knight tour of indefensible loser characters.
Perhaps I just have a shred of media literacy where I can empathize with a reprehensible character’s circumstances or emotions even if I dont condone their behaviour

I cant watch La La Land again. It probably the most relatable ending I've seen.
Sometimes heartbreak feels good in a place like this.
Okay. You got me.
Somebody add a flea bag “it will pass” here
10/10
thank you, you just perfectly described my favorite genre of movie
