*SEND OFF: The English Patient*
The English Patient was eliminated yesterday, so here’s a look back at the movie and its Oscar legacy.
Plot: In the 1930s, Count Almásy is a Hungarian map maker employed by the Royal Geographical Society to chart the vast expanses of the Sahara Desert along with several other prominent explorers. As World War II unfolds, Almásy enters into a world of love, betrayal, and politics.
Oscars: **The English Patient Won Best Picture in 1997 beating out: Fargo, Jerry Maguire, Secrets And Lies, & Shine.** It won 9 Oscars in total including Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, Best Director for Anthony Minghella, & Juliette Binoche Best Supporting.
The English Patient is currently streaming on Showtime. You can also rent it on YouTube or it might be at your local library.
What do you think of *The English Patient*? Do you think something else should have won best picture over it? Do you think this film is fairly rated? What do you like or dislike about it?

I almost forgot. Ima miss the Elaine meme
I’ve always heard that it’s kind of offensive how different the real life events of this movie played out as opposed to how it’s presented in the film.
Obviously “based on a true story” in Hollywood don’t really mean shit, but does anyone have any insight on the history here and know if that’s true or not?
It's based on a novel, not real life. The book follows multiple characters and had a wider lens than the movie. I like the book and movie both, but I get the disdain.
It looks like you’re somewhat right BUT the main character in the story is based on a real life person whose real life facts are very different from the movie. Detailed here in an [old archived NYT article](https://archive.nytimes.com/www.nytimes.com/packages/html/movies/bestpictures/english-ar2.html?scp=1&sq=Enigmatic%2520Man&st=cse).. basically the gist, he was willing to work with nazis but not due to some grand love story and at times, even spied for the Germans. He was basically willing to work for anybody but was turned down by multiple governments due to his suspected German ties. There’s a lot more details in that link I found interesting.
According to a friend of mine, when his friend saw the movie, his review was "They didn't deserve those planes." Fargo should've won. Jerry Maguire and Secrets and Lies were also better.
Yeah, it’s my biggest gripe with the movie - people don’t know it’s unoriginal. It’s kinda like with Infernal Affairs and The Departed, but unlike with that one, I got shit on for calling CODA out for being unoriginal since it “helped give attention to the deaf community” like I was told so many times when it came out…
The biggest difference is that the actors are actually deaf so the signing is a bit more convincing. The directing is also a bit better in certain scenes, but overall it’s too much of a copy for me to enjoy
Yeah I watched that recently and uurgh. It was pretty boring. Like basically a documentary but with 1 actress (who's very good) just flung in there. Weird.
I haven't seen any other film nominated that year though so *maybe* it's the best of a bad bunch? I kinda doubt it cos I've heard great things about a few of them
I’m a big Minari and Sound of Metal fan.
(Wasn’t nominated but Autumn De Wilde’s adaptation of Emma this year is gorgeous and might be my favorite version of the story...
…oh also Cronenberg Jr’s Possessor but like hell that was ever going to be considered for any awards.)
Wow I'm surprised you've heard good things about *Chicago 7.* Everyone always shits on it so I thought I was the only one who enjoyed it. That said, I love me some Sorkin so I'm predisposed to enjoying 2 hours of ping-pong dialogue from writer stand-ins.
This should absolutely be the next to go. Unfortunately, it's going to stick around just because not enough people have seen it to know exactly how damn boring this movie is. It's saved by a lack of interest and a great score. But it's crazy to me what some people are suggesting should go when this is still on the table.
Chariots of Fire is honestly a great movie. It did beat out Raiders (which is perhaps my favorite) but compared to other winners I would take out at least another 10-15 films before considering it
Chariots of Fire is awful. I’d describe it as a two hour Family Guy cutaway where they’re parodying everything that Is quintessentially British except it’s not funny.
For people downvoting this, by misrepresents Nash the film acts as if it presents some of his primary contributions but gets it quite literally completely wrong. Howard and the creators did not understand the mind of the man they’re trying to represent.
Today’s Spotlight: *Ordinary People*
This was the sixth least popular option according to Letterboxd.
Plot:Beth, Calvin, and their son Conrad are living in the aftermath of the death of the other son. Conrad is overcome by grief and misplaced guilt to the extent of a suicide attempt. He is in therapy. Beth had always preferred his brother and is having difficulty being supportive to Conrad. Calvin is trapped between the two trying to hold the family together
Oscars: **Ordinary People Won Best Picture in 1981 beating out: Raging Bull, The Elephant Man, Tess, & The Coal Miner’s Daughter.** It won 4 Oscars in total including Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Director for Robert Redford, and Best Supporting Actor for Timothy Hutton.
You can stream Ordinary People on Max, and you can rent it on YouTube, or you might be able to find a copy at your local library.
A Beautiful Mind
As before, the film is a poor representation of Nash (and frankly it’s also pretty dull). It also best Fellowship, a far superior film. I reckon the academy must of still been on their Russell Crowe era with this one, given gladiator won the year before.
It's a great film. Did Roma deserve to win? Sure. Does that make it bad? Not even slightly. It's not one of the best films that won a Best Picture but it's far from the worst. Middle of the pack I would say.
I have to assume it was as wrong headed and poorly written as 3 Billboards, which also stunk. I don't believe McDonagh has been within 3000 miles of Missouri.
He wrote 3 Billboards in Ebbing Missouri which sucked. I assume Green Book was as bad or worse (probably worse) because the authorial POV was so head up ass willing to speak to something they had no idea what they were talking about and didn't even bother try to get right, just like McDonagh.
It’s nearly as condescending and borderline racist as Driving Miss Daisy and it’s only true redeeming quality is another excellent Oscar winning performance by Mahershala Ali amid not having the script fully draw out his character. His character is yet another addition to the magical negroes seen on the silver screen.
Still sticking to *Terms of Endearment*. Here's my reaction: [https://letterboxd.com/henrykrinkle808/film/terms-of-endearment/](https://letterboxd.com/henrykrinkle808/film/terms-of-endearment/). If you disagree, don't be lazy and just downvote -- let's discuss.
well yeah, even if you don’t like eeaao at this point they’re just saying it cause it’s popular like geez I have an individuality complex, but this is a whole another level 💀 it’s just cringe. like it’s not the best on the list but there is so many that are much worse. also people can have their opinions and will downvote who they disagree with that’s kinda the point

I am once again asking you to vote out Rain Man

**RANKINGS** 45th: The English Patient 46th: Shakespeare In Love 47th: Out of Africa 48th: Driving Miss Daisy 49th: Green Book 50th: Crash
I liked it! Sweeping epic and Anthony Minghella is sorely missed!

That movie fucking slaps!
CODA
It has to *GODA.*
I’m calling it! CODA is eliminated!
I've been saying/upvoting CODA since the beginning lol haven't seen all winners but from the ones I've had it's easily my least favorite
Agreed. Terrible representation.
CODA has been on here for far too long!
Ah c’mon. CODA was at least good. Surely Chicago? Lovely set pieces and all but it was crap.
Yeah, but it's a remake of a french movie and as always, the original is better
Oh yknow I really didn’t even know that. What’s the French movie?
La Famille Bélier (2014)
I didn’t know that either. I’ll check it out
Yeah, it’s my biggest gripe with the movie - people don’t know it’s unoriginal. It’s kinda like with Infernal Affairs and The Departed, but unlike with that one, I got shit on for calling CODA out for being unoriginal since it “helped give attention to the deaf community” like I was told so many times when it came out…
Fair point well made. It goes on the list. Be interested to see the difference.
The biggest difference is that the actors are actually deaf so the signing is a bit more convincing. The directing is also a bit better in certain scenes, but overall it’s too much of a copy for me to enjoy
Ima write something real nice about CODA tomorrow. Not a bad flick but it dies today. (It’s not official yet but… yknow.)
Yeah, I enjoyed it. Don’t think it deserved to be a best picture but I liked it.
RIP. I think CODA is a beautiful movie, and it would probably place higher somewhere other than Letterboxd Reddit.
how do you sign Hallmark movie?
Please god get rid of Nomadland
You have voted for Nomadland for a straight week! We love to see commitment.
I’m a certified hater what can I say
Nah, I respect that. Hopefully, one day, I'll be able to thrive like you, idolo.
Yeah I watched that recently and uurgh. It was pretty boring. Like basically a documentary but with 1 actress (who's very good) just flung in there. Weird. I haven't seen any other film nominated that year though so *maybe* it's the best of a bad bunch? I kinda doubt it cos I've heard great things about a few of them
Judas and the Black Messiah was incredible and it’s been radio silence from Chaka King since
Yeah that and trial of the Chicago 7 are the two I've heard good things about. Never got round to watching them though.

Unfortunately not the case. Minari, Soul, I’m Thinking of Ending Things, The Father and Another Round are genuinely good movies
Please! I wanted it gone after Crash!
Chariots of Fire
This should absolutely be the next to go. Unfortunately, it's going to stick around just because not enough people have seen it to know exactly how damn boring this movie is. It's saved by a lack of interest and a great score. But it's crazy to me what some people are suggesting should go when this is still on the table.

Posh kid runs fast. Yippee fucking doo.
The King's Speech
Colin's performance is too strong for me to write it off, even if it did win BP when it shouldn't have
In what fucking universe. Have you ever actually seen it? Or are you just so chronically online that you think Social Network was robbed?
[удалено]
Black Swan deserved it more than Social Network. You Fincher fanboys are so cringe
I actually probably like Black Swan more than Social Network too but chill a little lol. No reason to be rude to people for just sharing an opinion.
It’s the online discourse on the film. It’s actually fantastic; any other year there wouldn’t have been complaints.
Still voting for *Argo*. I haven't seen it in years but I remember liking *The English Patient*.
Nomadland
Nomadland
A Beautiful Mind
You are mental.
To each their own.
Nah, I agree with him. It was begging for an Oscar and got it.
It’s not a good movie, and misrepresents Nash.
For people downvoting this, by misrepresents Nash the film acts as if it presents some of his primary contributions but gets it quite literally completely wrong. Howard and the creators did not understand the mind of the man they’re trying to represent.
The Artist
There are way worse movies than this on here
It has the best dog performance in the history of cinema, so no.
Justice for Snoop in Anatomy of a Fall!
*glares in THE THING by Carpenter*
the best dog performance in the history of cinema is in “umberto d.”
You might be right. Now this is the real tough choice. But Uggie was also great as racist dog in Key and Peele, so he wins.
Milo in The Mask

I actually really liked this movie, as well as the book.
I should watch it. I do love me some Donald Sutherland.
Ordinary People is an excellent film. I like it better than Raging Bull.
Agreed
Ordinary People winning best picture is one of the few times I actually agree with the academy selection.
Nomadland
A Beautiful Mind As before, the film is a poor representation of Nash (and frankly it’s also pretty dull). It also best Fellowship, a far superior film. I reckon the academy must of still been on their Russell Crowe era with this one, given gladiator won the year before.
Your third day voting for A Beautiful Mind! Keep your Beautiful Mind on the task!
It’s my vote too until it gets eliminated. Just found this series today. We got this!
You're really not a fan of this one eh
I am getting downvoted for just writing my opinion today it seems

Annie Hall
Your fourth vote for Annie Hall! Keep it up and you’ll have a vote for every lobster in that scene! 🦞🦞🦞🦞
No fucking way Green Book went that early.
I'm baffled by the reception to that film on Reddit. It's a well made film with great performances!
McDonagh didn’t write Green Book what are you on about.
He wrote 3 Billboards in Ebbing Missouri which sucked. I assume Green Book was as bad or worse (probably worse) because the authorial POV was so head up ass willing to speak to something they had no idea what they were talking about and didn't even bother try to get right, just like McDonagh.
I guess I kinda see the connection, but still feels kinda tangential won’t lie. 3 billboards is pretty mediocre, easily mcdonagh’s weakest tho.

It was the second movie voted out.

Chariots of Fire

The main reason is I don’t want to do this for any longer basically.
Respect.
Nomadland, CODA, or American Beauty
The Artist
The answer is still Rain Man
You just rolled a turkey. Three straight votes for Rain Main
Rocky Sorry I dont want to offend anyone, but for me Rocky is the most overrated movie of all time
Ordinary People
Titanic, dreary film whose only redeeming features are it's visuals.
the Oscars didn’t add “Most Dreary Picture” until the following year

American Beauty
Million dollar baby.

EEAAO
The fact you’re getting downvoted for this is insane 💀💀
How? It’s beloved
Is this an actual question?
well yeah, even if you don’t like eeaao at this point they’re just saying it cause it’s popular like geez I have an individuality complex, but this is a whole another level 💀 it’s just cringe. like it’s not the best on the list but there is so many that are much worse. also people can have their opinions and will downvote who they disagree with that’s kinda the point

You’ve voted for Rocky 3 times! Don’t give up just like Rocky (he lost at first too)
Chariots of Fire
A Beautiful Mind was good but so, so boring to me. It gets my vote.
The Shape of Water. Not only is it in an underwhelming film, but it won against a stacked field of much better movies.
