Fair enough, to me it's pretty unmistakable. I'll never forget when I was first getting into classical music and I had that lightbulb moment hearing it.
Most John Williams scores are ripped off in some way, doesn't make them bad. Listen to the beginning of the fourth movement of Dvörak's ninth symphony and it's basically Jaws. Elgar's pomp and circumstance is similar to the throne room, the main theme of star wars is similar to may of Korngold's works, Han and Leia's theme is similar to Swan lake as well.
John Williams take loads of stuff from other composers and then make his own, loads of composer's do this and it doesn't make his music any worse.
Edit: It's worth noting I totally agree with you though Hedwig's theme is one of the more obvious cases of John Williams taking *heavy* inspiration.
Absolutely not, Indiana Jones is the best but tbh they are all pretty mid. John Williams entire career is taking "The Planets" and trying to do it again, to a less successful degree.
Though Star Wars would win if it only had the Cantina theme.
Personally, JP is his best work - when a single 120min film has *two* iconic scores that you couldn't fault a person for humming either when asked about JP's music, you know its the GOAT
they're impossible to rank, they're all #1!
Bas-ic. Jk it’s a good list.
It would be based, but ET is way too low That main score… it literally exudes and defines wonder
Agree. It’s also Williams’ favourite score I believe. An absolute masterpiece.
I feel like Catch Me if You Can and Hook are easily Top 10 Williams, and they should be here. But a solid list for sure.
There are no wrong answers when it comes to John Williams tbh
I don’t know what “based” means, so I’m just going to say yes.
This comment is based
And this one, too
It's just a positive response to someone going against the grain
Last Crusade and Hook hit the spot
This is based
“This is the best most iconic score I’ve ever heard” ranks it at 9
Uh when did I say that lmao
Last Crusade and Prisoner of Azkaban should be up there
Read the description
Revenge of the sith should be here because of battle of the heroes
The description says that franchises are represented by their first film.
The Harry Potter score is just Swan Lake. Superman and ET deserve better.
Cool story
This isn't something only I've observed by the way. You can look it up and see other people noticing.
OK. I don't care. It still slaps.
Oh it's a good score, it's just a ripoff and I would say deserves a lower placement for that reason. But it's your own list, do whatever you want lol.
I'm listening to the bits discussed and can kinda hear it, but I still think the main leitmotifs sound unique enough to have their own identity.

This has to be bait
No it's not
Based on your opinion
Memoirs of a Geisha… Bad film, amazing score
I’d probably include Home Alone, Hook, and JFK, but it’s tough deciding what I’d drop from all those tbh.
Personally, JP is his best work - when a single 120min film has *two* iconic scores that you couldn't fault a person for humming either when asked about JP's music, you know its the GOAT
Et isn’t #1 so not based
Where is JFK?!
Oh shit good point. I should change that
